TalkBack / Re: Telltale Bringing Minecraft: Story Mode To Wii U
« on: August 26, 2015, 04:03:51 PM »
Neat, I guess?

One of these days, I'd really like to see the dart board Telltale apparently uses to decide which games they're bringing to Wii U.

Heh. The Walking Dead and Minecraft are probably the two most lucrative licenses Telltale has. Not hard to figure out, sadly.

1302
Is the Isabelle amiibo going to be available apart from the game bundle?

Probably not given how Nintendo of America is running things these days.

Miku Nendoroid style!

For better and for worse, it seems that Project Mirai is the game you'd expect given the differences between the stereotypical Japanese 3DS audience and the stereotypical Japanese Vita/PlayStation audience.

There is no reason to keep fans in the dark about some of these Amiibo decisions,

Yes there is. Monetary reasons!

To keep the glib short, it is becoming increasingly obvious that Nintendo of America cares not for being fair with how they sell amiibo in North America.

Get those Fortune Street skills revved up and get those bells!

I can't imagine the eShop version being a free-to-start title, but I guess crazier Nintendo stuff has happened this year.

I can confirm The Last Remnant on 360 is a dumpster fire
I can also confirm it is the cause of my darkest arc on RFN.

On The Last Remnant PC, I can and did fill all my unions all with hero characters rather than the generic recruits. Upon learning that the 360 version doesn't or didn't allow that, I can't fathom how that version of the game can be played.

1307
The free-to-start/demo is nice. Not having a retail version of what I assume will be a large-data-size game is a bummer.

1308
Really happy to see that North America will get the free-to-start version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. A bit sad for those that would have liked a North American retail copy of the game.

This holiday seems to have quite a few games at is, Nintendo-wise. I agree that we'll probably see Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and Animal Crossing: Amiibo festival slide in to next year.

Given how some people were disappointed because they thought Ryu was an obvious, boring choice, I think it would be neat to see a out-of-left-field or strange newcomer.

Good show!

Nice to hear Jame's comments on Ace Combat: Infinity. I wish that game was better, though that didn't stop me from playing dozens of hours of it. I wanted to fly my jets that badly. I swear the in-game currency was called credits, but heck if I'll boot the game up to check.

As for Akitoshi Kawazu: I'm not familiar with the man's work, but I enjoyed my 90+ hours and completion of The Last Remnant (PC). I have heard the X360 version is pretty messed up though.

1311
Dropping physical media would be a retail suicide, as far as I'm concerned. Something Microsoft and Sony actually do well is dominate shelf space in stores like GameStop while Wii U takes up a sad corner. It would only be another nail in the coffin.

Think of all that Wii U and 3DS shelf space that could be amiibo and other Nintendo merchandise! Also, new game discs are a low margin anyway, so Wal-Mart and Target probably wouldn't mind carrying less of those. And GameStop sees the writing on the wall for used game discs.

For Nintendo in particular, they have always kept the size of their games very small relative to their peers. Only games like Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Xenoblade Chronicles X break the 10/20 GB barrier.

This has me revisiting a daft idea I had that is a compromise between the all-digital future and retail stores. The idea is kiosks in the store that locally stored the data for a lot of video games. You can purchase games from the kiosk, have it loaded on to your special cartridge, USB stick, or (maybe special?) SD card faster than it would take to download it, and then bring that data back home to your system. Of course, there will be redundancies to ensure the purchase is tied to your Nintendo account; the locally stored data is for those with poor (or maybe no) internet connections. These kiosks can have chain-specific sales too.

I say this is daft because there are security issues, you still have a retailer as a middle-man, you will need to train retail staff to operate and maintain the kiosk, and this process is too complex compared to buying a disc or from the eShop.

1312
Good show. That Pikachu plush looks so good!

1313
This is a reminder that patents could mean anything or nothing, and that they are terribly vague because patent law is messed up.

So patents are smoke and mirrors... until they aren't!

well there goes backwards compatability.....

does it rely on the server for processing to some degree?

then again why not release a usb 3.0 external optical drive for classic games? People who want it buy it, people who don't do not. There were only 3 generations of optical drives for Nintendo. There's still time to make Wii U backwards compatible with GameCube too.
There's always eShop versions of games.

As for cloud processing, that is definitely a very un-Nintendo thing to guess in a time when eShop gets taken down every Christmas.

1314
I find it odd that there's some enthusiasm for the Wii U experience to continue.  Having only like five games a year because there's no third party support is just so awesome that you want to experience it for another year?  The NX is hope for Nintendo to bounce back.  If all goes well then the first year of the NX will be a better year for a Nintendo fan than one more year of the Wii U.

If there was a time to cut the Wii U, it was before it was released. Perhaps before it was designed. My views are colored as a Wii U owner, but I selfishly expect that a video game platform holder will commit to its platform for 4-5 years. I emphasize "selfishly" because I care not for any business realities or industry what-not outside of having any games for the game system I bought.

Alas, while I have been a proponent of the NX being a 2017 system and Zelda U being exclusive to Wii U, I wouldn't be too mad or beyond understanding if I'm wrong on one or both accounts. I desire my Wii U to be a special, good thing for as long as possible, regardless of its lack of success or how much it is a boondoggle for the company's future.

Pikachu Libre made my day.

Patents!
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=47643.150

A 2015 patent. Patents are very dry, but the interesting takes here are a console that lacks an optical disk drive and another controller with a display screen. It's a Nintendo Go, sans the portability.

I'm watching the tournament stream on Twitch right now, and the game looks good. It's interesting that the game combines the ranged combat of Gundam Vs. and the close combat of Tekken. I hope they fill out that character select screen.

Also, lucha Pikachu!

1318

Yay!

There was some chit-chat over Pokken moving over to NX; how it would be better for the game and the system. I'm glad that it's getting a Wii U release if only so I have an opportunity to play it earlier. Besides, a Pokken Tag Tournament or a Pokken Tournament: Rocket Resurrection can't be far behind.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Splatoon!! WELCOME - TO DYE!
« on: August 21, 2015, 05:17:16 AM »
I disagree when I interpret the renovation of Urchin Underpass adding more over watch points to the central court, more surmountable cover points to the central court (i.e. the double height guard rails), the raised path expansion on the road to the central court, and the tower in the team court pas the spawn point. There are more changes in elevation, more cover points, and more opportunities to flank in the new Urchin Underpass.

While the old Urchin Underpass wasn't awful, the flow of the map wasn't as fluid or interesting as the other four starting maps. From my memory, being pushed back to the team court was one of the worst-feeling choke points of the game. (Granted, I didn't use the left path opening in to the central courts as much as I should have.) The new Urchin Underpass is a bigger, better version of Splatoon's fundamentals that has been expanded to be far more dynamic than its previous self.

Good show.

I don't if it's just my bad luck, but all my Splatoon matches are usually filled with Japanese players who are crack shot shooters or bruising Krak-On Rollers.

I would try not to be concerned with leveling up if looking at it is starting to depress you. The new level cap is mostly there to give people a thing to do for the sake of it. While you get new gear every five new levels, they don't seem essential.

I suggest attempting to commit short sessions with Splatoon a few times a week so it stays fresh with you. Maybe enough rounds to buy a new piece of gear. If that ends up feeling too much like a chore, then maybe Splatoon's time has truly passed for you.

I don't ever want to go back to the old Urchin Underpass. It was too narrow and limited.

TalkBack / Re: Splatoon Moves On Up To Flounder Heights
« on: August 20, 2015, 12:14:02 AM »
If there is a history of societal/racial tension associated with Japan's implementation of public housing, that will be interesting to learn. In cities such as Hong Kong, I get the impression that buildings such as these are primarily to provide housing for a dense population. However, my historical knowledge surrounding such things is non-existent.

The few screenshots of Flounder Heights are intriguing. This map further plays with vertical space as seen in Moray Towers. However, this applies it to closer quarters.

I wonder if the bridge map will be a map with a special gimmick, echoing the gate feature of Camp Triggerfish.

If what killed the Wii U was 3DS games being too similar overall from content to quality, then that situation will repeat itself regardless as the power and value of handheld hardware improves.

If a repeat of the 3DS and Wii U come to the NX Handheld and NX Home, then at least Nintendo is better off in this situation by more easily being able to produce games for both systems.

While Japan is veering more towards portable means of play, North American, European, Australian, and some other territories show a preference for home consoles. In the hypothetical situation of the NX Handheld and NX Home, Nintendo is in an easier place to provide enough software for both platforms. This also avoids the potential worst-of-both-worlds pitfalls of an NX Hybrid.
