Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 443: Autumn of Too Many Leaves

Good show. And Linderman is on the take?!

Are Final Fantasy 4 or 6 not good entry points for JRPGs? Or is Chrono Trigger that damn good?

1277
That laundry list mostly has things that sound good and what is desired with very few potential **** ups (no disc drive, heavy focus on anti-piracy). Which means I think it is complete horseshit, because we all know there has to be at least one obvious **** up for it to be a Nintendo console.

But it is nice to dream.

The piece of evidence that damns this for me though is backwards compatibility, I would not be able to accept a reality in which Nintendo goes through the tremondous monolithic amount of effort and money to make the NX backwards compatible with Wii U, but you can only play your physical games through the use of an external optical disc drive. Hahahahahahah no.

That to me makes the most sense given Nintendo's goal of having evergreen titles. If they can't sell Wii Us, Nintendo will definitely try to sell Wii U games for backwards compatibility. Obviously, not in a way that makes sense to us, but I will be surprised if Super Mario Maker and Mario Kart 8 are unplayable on the NX Home. As for the external optical drive, Nintendo would love to sell accessories and would bundle a game/amiibo with that thing.

Lastly, the Wii U GamePad would have to be compatible somehow because of amiibo.

Neat idea for a game, but all those tubes tracks blend together.

Sounds good.

Hopefully, the game will be updated with new and complex elements and improvements in the search and filtering options. From video, Nintendo wanted simple options in the Course World search that don't hold up for power users or those searching for specific design goals.

Nav Ball was better. The rest of the localizations are good so far. Except Skells. Dolls was also really dumb but Skells is awkward. I wish it was something else. Why not just Mechs or Mech Suits?

Nav Ball was a cute and JRPG-ish name. Follow Ball is as straight-to-the-point as can be, which is something I appreciate.

As for the word "mech", I assume Nintendo of America is wary of litigation. "Mech" may still be trademarked/copyrighted by the Battletech license. I don't know where the Battletech license went after Smith and Tinker. Also notice how practically no fiction with a giant robot (outside of Battletech and Mechwarrior) refers their giant robot with the word "mech".

"Skell" doesn't roll off the tongue nicely, and I became fond of "Doll" from following the Japanese pre-release footage. However, I've come to appreciate Treehouse's explanation of "Skell" being a shortening of "exoskeleton" and how "Skell" would easily fit in the same lip flap or text space as "Doll".

Thinking on the history of names-for-giant-robots-other-than-mech where you have your mobile suits, cores, gears, wanzers, vertical tanks, titans, and what not; skell isn't an outlier. If anything, it's something unique that Xenoblade Chronicles X can call its own. That is something the game can be proud of.

I want the Special Edition. Amazon has run through their allotment for now. I'm keeping an eye out, but I won't be too bummed if I can't get it.

More localization tidbits:
Sounds like Overeds, powerful & named field enemies, have been localized in to Tyrants. Good switch.

The Nav Ball that you can shoot out to light a path to an objective has been localized to the Follow Ball.

To use this don't you need to have access to the internet and a credit card to pay for your purchase?

Glossed over this.

There are a lot of Amazon gift cards and pre-paid debit cards floating around. There are options for a person who doesn't have or want to use a credit card to be able to buy stuff from online retailers.

Is there some little detail about this that makes it different from the eShop that I'm missing?

Opportunities for different discounts and offers. Also, to take advantage of pre-existing Amazon cash or cash back services.

Think of this way: This added option is an approach vector for people who want to do a little Extreme Couponing.

The first episode (out of five) of Nintendo of America's Xenoblade Chronicles X Survival Guide.

Some localization tidbits:
BLADE: Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipator is now Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth.

BLADE is the military-mercenary-government of Xenoblade X. There was probably no way to make a good, sensible acronym out of BLADE, but I will miss artificially emancipating from the destiny of Earth and humanity's destruction.

Unions, Xenoblade X's in-universe guilds, are now referred to as Divisions. This is better in line with BLADE's militaristic nature. The video details each of the 8 divisions and their specific game play bonuses.

And here I was thinking the New 3DS wouldn't come over when it wasn't mentioned in the previous new dump.

Hmm, Happy Home Designer costs $40 and an additional face plate set is usually in the $15-30 range imported and not counting shipping. So maybe a non-bundled N3DS would be about $160-180?

I was hoping for a Nintendo Direct in August just because I enjoy them and the experience around them. I believe NOA and NOE are capable of producing their own Directs. On a sadder note, NCL has had an Iwata-less Nintendo Direct for Japan this year.

As mentioned by others previously, there isn't too much news for Nintendo to share for the rest of the year. The only potential titles to go further in to detailing are Star Fox Zero, Animal Crossing amiibo Festival, Tri-Force Heroes, and a few others. Not a flashy or inspiring show to put up.

We might see game-specific and region-specific Directs for games such as Xenoblade Chronicles X and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Fatal Frame is a long shot given it's an eShop-only title in North America, and that there is little you would want previewed of a horror game. Along the same line, Xenoblade Chronicles X already had an abridged version of NCL's pre-release coverage. While I would love to see an official English version of the hour and a half of Xenoblade Chronicles X digest videos, that is far too much.

What has the best chance of bringing a Nintendo Direct to stream? Nintendo's first smart device game.

"PAX Prime 2015: The Art and World of Xenoblade Chronicles X - Full Panel"

It's not the full panel as they cut off the Q&A. Also, cynically, this is a 43 minute ad for the North American limited edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Good info on the game and its creation. I noticed the dates on the various concept art pieces where some date to January 2013 or some in 2012. There are only 10 (of a possible 55) tracks from the soundtrack, but the samples of some the 10 are the ones you would pick. Tracks still in question are "Black Tar", the main battle theme, and "The key we've lost" from the E3 2013 trailer.

The concept art and video clips in the panel are somewhat spoilers for those that haven't devoured all the pre-release coverage of the game.

TalkBack / Re: Telltale Bringing Minecraft: Story Mode To Wii U
« on: August 30, 2015, 04:16:15 AM »
Season 2 of Telltale's The Walking Dead isn't as well put together as season 1, but it has enough moments to be enjoyable. There are a lot of new characters and they just aren't developed as well as season 1's core group. The 2nd season peaks in episode 3, and meanders afterwards in terms of the overarching plot. There are character turns that either don't feel earned or aren't telegraphed well (episode 5 being a sticking point).

Still, there are good dramatic beats that are worth playing through. Maybe this is cognitive dissonance of the buyer acting up, but I didn't find season 2 to be awful. At worst, I'd say it's a disappointing sophomore slump.

1294
And it's gone, from Amazon at least.

To say this Limited Edition is underwhelming is quite the understatement. For an extra $30, at least give me the full soundtrack, not a 10-track sampler of probably the least interesting tracks. Nah, I think I'll save my money for what Atlus claims is Persona 5's release.

To be honest, what did you expect or want? For the extra dough that is going to trinkets for fans, a big art book and a specially made USB stick are sensible things compared to ridiculous figurines. Unless you want to argue that a limited edition is supposed to as far from sensible as it can possibly be, which... is a reasonable argument to have.

On the soundtrack point specifically, the 4 disc import costs 3980 yen which exchanges to 32.70, not counting shipping fees. Add to that a high-profile composer and a probably-fussy Japanese music company, and it is most likely a hard ask for Nintendo of America to secure a version of the entire soundtrack for a cheap-enough price.

Personally, I like a beefy art book and art pieces so this limited edition looks good to me. The $30 upgrade sounds right to me given my experience with picking through art book imports. Also, whether we like it or not, that plastic USB drive probably costs more than we would like it to.

Though, if today's premium (as opposed to no additional cost) limited edition accepts no half measures or sensible trinkets, then it would be dishonest if I didn't admit that I would've really liked it if the package had included a figurine or a model kit of either the poster-boy or Elma's Skell.

Lastly, I imported the soundtrack CDs and the soundtrack for the game is quite good. Also, extremely typical of Hiroyuki Sawano current style, so you might tire of the game's beats if your ears are played out from Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill.

The frame rate should be better. I hope it gets better, but I don't have much faith in Unreal Engine on Wii U and in Bandai Namco's effort for an exclusive free-to-start title on the Wii U.

The environments and enemies look extremely drab, the characters look only okay, and the snippets of action don't inspire. But there seems to be just enough silliness for me to probably spend a stupid amount of time and maybe some money in the game. I just pray to the stars that it doesn't have a miserable energy system as seen in Ace Combat: Infinity and Soul Calibur: Lost Swords. With any luck, Lost Reavers will look to Warframe and Phantasy Star Online 2 on how to implement free-to-play systems for an Action-RPG.
