It's all up to you, Skell kid! Charge through that gap and show the (rest of the) world what you're made of!

PUSH XENOBLADE X

As for Star Fox Zero, I'm happy about the delay. The game's E3 2015 showing showed a game that looked undercooked for some. Now, I think the Star Fox game a lot of people want would take 2+ years, while Zero looks half that. Hopefully this extra time will address the complaints from the more negative side of Zero's mixed E3 2015 reception.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo's Kimishima-Takeda-Miyamoto TROIKA
« on: September 17, 2015, 12:50:37 AM »
http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Nintendo-taps-steady-hand-to-replace-charismatic-leader?page=1

The English version of the Nikkei article.

"(Kimishima) will work with the company's two top developers -- Genyo Takeda, 66, and "Super Mario Bros." creator Shigeru Miyamoto, 62 -- in what is expected to be a troika.

Takeda, now in charge of game systems, will assume the newly created post of technology fellow. Miyamoto, who is in charge of software, will take up the new position of creative fellow.

The move detaches the two general managers from day-to-day responsibilities so that they can focus on leading the company, pursuing reforms with the president. The new appointments take effect Wednesday."
- - -
"Kimishima was not the favorite among Iwata's possible successors. After Iwata died on July 11 at age 55, Nintendo had initially explored younger candidates among its employees, believing that the president of a game company must be in touch with youth, according to a senior official.

But the screening process ran into hurdles due to the dearth of talent ready for the role. As the president's chair remained vacant for two months, preparations loomed for year-end sales -- the source of half of annual revenue.

The pressing situation apparently pushed Nintendo to seek a leader with rich managerial experience for a smooth transition."

The article is an interesting read. It helps define Nintendo's road ahead under Kimishima.

Nice review. Game looks to be an all-around improvement over Burst.

1256
Good to see that we're getting the DLC characters for free. That saves me an assumed $15-20.

I wonder if we'll be getting the experience, currency, and material boosters. I figure Nintendo would want to offer the early-unlock for the costume armor option somehow.

http://gonintendo.com/stories/242628-nikkei-describes-kimishima-as-soft-and-friendly-wrong-to-run-the

And there are a bunch of other tweets by https://twitter.com/serkantoto relating to Kimishima.

The gist of it is that Kimishima is staying the course set by Iwata and will be Nintendo's steady hand at the wheel. The challenges Kimishima identifies are finding new projects, cultivating the right human resources for Nintendo-like profits, and establishing "a future-proof group leadership system inside Nintendo."

Given his, Miyamoto's, and Takeda's age, it is looking more likely that Kimishima's leadership will be a short one that focuses on raising younger executive, creative, and technical talent to be the next leaders of Nintendo.

I was already planning to buy all the DLC character (a 2,000 yen pack), but cheers if NA/EU/AU/NZ are getting it for free.

I do wonder if Nintendo will be selling the grind boosters as DLC. There's also the question of the costume armor option that was unlocked by purchasing DLC or completing the story.

TalkBack / Re: Meet Nintendo's New President Tatsumi Kimishima
« on: September 14, 2015, 03:52:04 PM »
There are one or two pictures of him smiling out there. It's just that the other one or two pictures of him with a serious face are getting more play.

As details and interview snippets come out, Kimishima seems to be a good and safe choice for a Nintendo in a state of transition.

TalkBack / Re: Tatsumi Kimishima Named President of Nintendo
« on: September 14, 2015, 04:11:40 AM »
Business man is gonna business.

The safe and sensible choice is the gut reaction I'm reading from others. Hope Kimishima does well.

1262
It's hard to get a read on the man given his lack of publicity. He went from being a banker to director of The Pokemon Company and then to Nintendo of America. While NoA has its problems, I always saw The Pokemon Company as more progressive compared to NCL. But who knows if Kimishima had anything to do with my impression of The Pokemon Company.

My big question is if he was pushing forward or holding back the branches he was in charge of. I'm finding it impossible to answer that. The only thing I can be sure of is that Kimishima is a business man that is going to business.

http://www.wired.com/2015/09/nintendo-new-president/

Chirs Kohlar has made the observation that EAD and SPD may have been merged in to the Entertainment Planning & Development Division under the direction of Shinya Takahashi.

Also that Miyamoto and Takeda are now Creative Fellow and Technology Fellow, respectively. A sign of those two backing away from the business side of Nintendo?

EDIT: Lastly, note that Kimishima is 65 years old. Even taking in to consideration Japan's idiosyncrasies, one wonders how long of a term Kimishima will serve.

From my meager understanding, a lawyer-by-education became a bank man. Now his path as a management executive brought him all the way to the big chair.

Perhaps this is the safest and most obvious choice for Nintendo? To have an old business executive that has been with the company for some time be their new leader?

Swimsuit DLC. Well played, Atlus.

Pretty neat stuff. I can only hope that NA and EU/OC get something like it.

It's just Regular Mario with regular arms and legs.

I really like how playful the tools are, though I couldn't speed up the delivery of the next set. Sadly, my Wii U has taken to freezing frequently.

And this is why I try not to post at 3:30 in the morning... -_-

I think your first one is more honest! Or at least I got what you were saying.

That trailer... that has a lot of money and effort put in to it. That and the little Bluetooth accessory shows the high degree of commitment The Pokemon Company, Nintendo, and Niantic have for this smart device venture.

Surprising and unsurprisingly, the promise of Pokemon GO captures a lot of the promise of the main games. Going on adventures in a big world, battling, catching, trading, and collaborating with friends and like-minded people. Granted, the game will be trying to do this through a lo-fi game app, but it's the thoughts that I'm counting! (Please no dark humor on poorly-lit alleys and AR games.)

Since this game is a free-to-start product, I do wonder how it will handle content, pacing, and microtransactions. Those three things are always deeply-connected in smart device games, and it is where games live and die.

Lastly, credit is due for the companies making a game that is weird and takes advantage of unique smart phone features that aren't available on a 3DS or Wii U.

Good review.

It's a bit of shame that they didn't bring over the latest 3DS game, but I can understand the importance of story continuity and keeping in line with the North American franchise roll out.

Hmm. So either Eurogamer got it wrong, or they waited at least 6 weeks to report on the interview

Nintendo is not a stranger to weird embargoes and non-disclosure agreements.

Also, you can tell this was an delayed report of an interview because Eurogamer would've (gently) pressed for any comment on Iwata's passing if this was a recent interview.

I was referring to Miyamoto & Aunuma's appearance at last year's Video Game Awards w/ Zelda as well as Nintendo's many, many, MANY assurances that Zelda Wii U was coming out this year...until it wasn't and suddenly Nintendo wouldn't talk about it or show it again. Point is, game developers say a lot of things to try to garner false hype, and Nintendo's well-known for making empty promises when it comes to release windows.

Skipping my rumbling thoughts of semantics, honesty, the fluid nature of video game development, and uncontrollable interpretations by enthusiasts...

... so we can be glib once it comes out! :p

A new, possibly Wii U game? Can we gloat now :p
While the words you hint strongly at a Wii U release, I'll be cautious until Nintendo says so.

This casts the touchscreen-controls patch and the recent, post-release demo in different light. Since Pikmin 3 was developed as a Wii game first, it didn't take advantage of the Wii U GamePad as much as some would've liked. Perhaps the development team found something with experimenting on the Pikmin 3 touchscreen controls on the GamePad.

If Nintendo's going to throw money away on a game that's going to bomb anyway, I'd rather they threw that money at a new Metroid or (heaven forbid) a new IP.

While VGchartz is unreliable, it does say that Pikmin 3 sold about 930k globally. Not sure if that's a bomb for Nintendo's coffers, though it is for a lot of other big companies. I'll grant you that Metroid Prime 3 and Metroid: Other M both sold 1.79m and 1.33m, respectively. As for new IP, hey, we got Code Name: STEAM and Splatoon this year. They can't press their luck all the time (though maybe they should).
