I just reached the Pumpkin Festival at the end of Summer.  I've probably put about thirty hours in by now.  Definitely NOT a game for a quick playthrough.  I'm dreadfully afraid that I've missed something that won't come back around next year.  I love the game but it just takes so gosh-darned much TIME!  I doubt with my busy gaming schedule I will be able to fit in a second full game to learn from my mistakes.

I guess it's kind of like real life then.  You only get the one try.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Indiana Jones Staff of Kings for Wii
« on: June 13, 2009, 08:33:39 AM »
My quick impressions of "Staff of Kings": I really want to like it more.  There's clearly a very cool and fun game hidden in here but it's buried in mediocrity.  The brawling portions of the game are frustrating in that you're constantly surrounded by foes, which means you can't do any of the cool moves you learn in the tutorial like whipping a guy over and head-butting him.  You end up just flailing with the Wii-remote and nunchuck just to clear space.  And the exploration and puzzle solving portions end up being less about puzzle solving and more about just wandering through the levels waiting for a context sensitive whip icon to appear indicating that there's something nearby you can interact with.

I've only played through a small portion of the game so far, but it feels to me as if I'm engaged in one long interactive cutscene.. actual game-play is reduced to periodically obeying on-screen instructions between being mobbed by enemy grunts.  At least Mad World had the art style and humor to distract from the tedium.

Of course, I haven't played Fate of Atlantis yet, so I do have that to look forward to.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 w/ M+
« on: June 13, 2009, 12:27:05 AM »
Finally got the time this morning to dedicate some time t Tiger 10 and I really hope that EA is promoting this thing heavily.  The pure intuitive perfection of the M+ for golf is astounding.  I played through my first full 18 hole game in Career Mode and came in at 25 over par.. just about what I would expect were I actually out and about playing golf.

After spending some time tweaking my clubs I feel more confident in my accuracy (Oh, and I used some XP to improve my character too) and I'm not slicing every single time I hit the ball any more.

Most of all I'm just having a lot of fun.  My right arm aches from playing though.

If anybody want to laugh at my ineptitude my EA persona is Tanatoes.  Naturally.

Is there any way to tell if a painting is a forgery before you buy it?
No way.  That's Redd for you.

Looks like some kind of dungeon crawler/sim style echo game...
Genre defying.

Err... when setting up your DSi (user name, birth date, favorite color, internet connections, etc.), do you remember entering your Club Nintendo information? :)

No.  But I probably linked my DSi ware purchases with my Club Nintendo account.  (I love how all my Wii Ware purchases instantly show up in my registered game list.)

Those canny Nintendo folks: just checked my Club Nintendo to do list and it knows that I have a DSi before I have even registered it.  (Probably because I downloaded some DSi-ware games.)  Man.. I have so many unclaimed coins.  Can't wait until July when I can start taking surveys again.

Looks a lot harder than BEAT.  Still an instabuy for me though.  I wish the DSi had some quality games like this coming out.

Yeay!  Capcom loves us.  Just for that I'm gonna go order the new RE:UC game.

Wow, thanks for that.  I just beat World of Goo over the weekend (one of many Wii-Ware titles I can now play whenever I want to due to the SD card fix!)  And I downloaded the soundtrack into my iPod, so this piano thing was timely and cool for me.

I loved the game all to pieces.. even if some of the OCD challenges are patently impossible... I won't stop trying.

does anyone else have the issue of when you select the SD Channel it takes forever and a day to bring it up on screen?

It takes about 10 seconds for me.  I have about 40 games on my SD card - it's an old 2Meg SD though, so no compression or anything to deal with.

I'm surprised that Donkey Kong isn't there right at the start.  I'd LOVE a pixel-perfect Donkey Kond Jr... that was my favorite Nintendo arcade game back in the day.

Oh, and I vote for Q-Bert, Galaga, Pole Position, Joust and 4-player Gauntlet.  Oh, and Streets of Rage.  So many memories!

I stand corrected!  I've just confirmed that save stated DO still work for NES games that are stored on the SD card.  So now I have no complaints at all about the SD Card Chanel.  This is the best thing to happen to my Wii in weeks.

Does anybody know when all the Final Fantasy VC games are supposed to hit?

I'm still miffed that I got platinum status on the day Club Nintendo went live and never got my letter from the Reginator.  So unfair.

I just spent about an hour downloading all the VC and Wii-Ware games that I've had to delete in the past few months to make space.  (Wll not all.. there are still some games I didn't bother to download since I figure I probably won't be playing them again.)  Then I had to spend some time in the SD channel moving stuff around to sort of organize things.  (All the Super Mario games together, all the Sonic and R-Type games.. you get the idea.)  Now I have instant access to a VAST library of classics and new Wii-Ware stuff.. I'm LOVING this update.

My only complaint is that if you use the home button and quit to the Wii menu it doesn't copy the state of the game back to the SD card so some games are going to have to stay in the Wii memory.  (In particular I'm thinking here of Kid Icarus.  I'm too lazy to write down codes to save my game, so I just pause and save the game state to preserve my glacial progress through this bastard of an impossible game and just continue from my last death as though I'm doing one enormous long play-through.)

I'm rewarding myself by downloading some new games I didn't have room for before the shift.  Hooray for Ogre Battle and Beat.Trip.

I am a happy Nintenfan.

Right now I am planning on paying off the mortgages of my three other houses so I can remodel them and create themed rooms. For example, one house is going to serve as a daycare, school and hospital. The other house is going to be a boutique (hoping to give Gracie some competition) and finally my other house is going to offer a biker bar and a boxing ring. Combine this with the two Nintendo museums I have in my house and St. Hope will be a happening, busy place.

Wow- that sounds brilliant.  I hope I can visit when you have the houses set up.

My quick impressions after only completing the first four story missions:

They use a lot of tricks to make it seem that there are more zombies than they can fit on the screen at a time:

Zombies fade into view as you approach them like the scenery in San Francisco Rush.  Very odd since there's no fog in the mall.. just magically materializing zombies.  And they also pop into existence when you look away.  So when you've just got done clearing a path to lead some civvies through you'll turn around and the zombies you just slaughtered will all be back.  And hungry.

Enemy AI is practically non-existent.. but it was so on the X360 as well.

"Waggle" control is problematic.  I'm still trying to figure out how to use secondary weapons on stunned zombies, but that's definately part of the fun of the game: trying to kill zombies in different ways with everything you can pick up in the mall.

Cut scenes which on the 360 were realtime rendered are now all pre-rendered clips from the 360.  This means that the level of detail in the character models is slightly higher during cut scenes, and you will always be seen wearing your initial leather jacket outfit instead of whatever other flashy duds you've grabbed in the meantime.

I am very much missing having the camera.  Seems strange to play the part of a photo-journalist and never take any pictures.

There is no bounding box when aiming, so if you pause to shoot something and want to adjust your view you have to use the thumb stick to aim the camera, then aim with your cross-hair.  (I.e. you cannot move the camera by pointing towards the edge of the screen, which is what I've become used to in Wii FPS.)  Oh, and I had to go into options and flip the horizontal while aiming because I found myself constantly pointing the camera at the floor when I wanted to aim up.

Really - the development team should have spent some time playing Godfather: The Black Hand Edition.  That's the gold standard of 3rd person Wii controls, and everybody could learn from it.  It handles close combat in a visceral and fun way and gunfights in a seamless and simple way as well.  Dead Rising just feels clunky and awkward.  I'll keep playing in hopes it will prove me wrong.  There's civilians to rescue and zombies to slaughter.. so many zombies to slaughter.

With March underway, I can't help but notice the lack of green grass in some areas that have been trudged through during the winter months. What are some ways to get some of that green back?

Make paths on the ground and don't walk off the paths.  Or skip six months into the future... if you don't mind cheating.

My favorite Zeldas are the GBC ones.  Awakening, Ages and Seasons all rock.  (Yes, I realize Awakening was a classic GB cart before the DX GBC version... and I own both.)

Surely Phantom Hourglass is a Windwaker 2?  The key property of Majora's Mask is learning the events that take place over the course of the three days and then exploiting them.  I would love another game like that though.

Just beat the game on easy.  Once I stopped using the handgun for everything and started using the shotgun everything suddenly became all easy!  I even got a few Bloodbath bonuses.  I think I need to pony up for a submachine gun or assault rifle to really do justice to the last level, but I was able to stagger through it (with FOUR! continues) using the shotgun alone.

Now it's on to the director's cut, and I have to start upgrading and buying my weapons all over again.

I still haven't had a chance to try the game in two-player mode yet.  And does anybody know how to unlock dual-wield?  I want to try some John Wu stylee action.
