General Chat / RE: Mac OS X Leopard (10.5)
« on: October 26, 2007, 06:18:58 PM »
Well, I'm currently posting from Leopard and I must say, this is one sexy beast. Definitely slicker than Tiger and significantly faster, at least on my machine. Took a damn long time to install, but it was totally worth it. Spaces seems to be working nicely and Time Machine is definitely cool. The new Finder is definitely different feeling, but ultimately way cooler and a welcome improvement. Stacks on the launch bar seem kind of stupid, I'll have to try them out for a while and see if I get something out of them. All in all though, I am enjoying this upgrade, and it's numerous improvements over an already excellent OS.

I'd like to quantify this by specifying the first season only; the rest are crap.

I'd also like to disagree here, great from beginning to end, no qualifiers necessary.

But in all seriousness, I know very little about this.  My sister purchased a Mac book very recently.  Should I prompt her to upgrade?  If not now, when?  Ever?

Things like Tiger in a nutshell are a bundle of patchs rolled up into one huge single patch put on a disk, so unless you like to be on the bleeding edge, I would wait a few months to see if others are having a smooth time upgrading. Unless you really now what your doing, most of the time I recommend to people never upgrade unless their is a new feature, the update gives, that you want. If it's a single patch or a important security patch, generally upgrade should be ok.

Or you can have the install disk, blow away the current installation and reinstall fresh. But you will lose all the stuff that was on your computer. In any case before you ever do a major upgrade or reinstall, backup. Backup often.

For your general user, there is no pressing need to upgrade your OS as of right now. If you are a more technical person, Leopard has a huuuuuuge number of improvements over Tiger, some visual, most on the backend. There have been great lengths taken to ensure operation of both 32 bit and 64 bit software as well as a much safer operating system through sandboxing and memory randomization.

Yourself, for not pre-ordering and showing your consumer support for this wonderful product.

Seriously people, if it's as quirky as this title, the game might as well be an Atlus title. And you ALWAYS pre-order Atlus titles.

Sorry Kairon, but you shouldn't have to preorder a game in order to get it. The whole preorder concept is a load of crap and I can't stand that the industry has shifted in that direction. Maybe these companies should start figuring out a way to gauge consumer demand rather than relying on preorders.

General Gaming / RE: Stop it with the secret collectibles!
« on: October 26, 2007, 02:17:33 AM »
It seems to me the issue is with the game design itself and not so much the secret collectibles. If you can't beat the game properly without the collectible than the game was designed poorly. I know people hate collect-a-thons in gaming, but typically for me, it gives me reason to continue playing the game for quite a while after I have already beaten the main chunk of the game.

Secret Collectibles can definitely be a double edged sword, and far too many games rely on them to extend the initial play through of a game. I blame poor game design, not secret collectibles as a whole.

« on: October 25, 2007, 05:43:32 PM »
So tomorrow is a lovely day. All Mac users will have the opportunity to upgrade Tiger to the new version of OS X, Leopard. Alot of the backend changes to the OS have me really excited as well as Spaces on the front end. I'll definitely be upgrading my iMac tomorrow, anyone else going to be basking in the glory of Leopard tomorrow?

Too bad after that, David J. started sounding like an a$$hat and saying his game was high art, it's not.
While I feel GoW was over hyped it was nice having a game built for 18+ and above.

God of War was made for 13-16 year old males, NOT 18+. At that age range the game would've been awesome because the characteristics of that game are EXACTLY what appealed to you at that age.

Ratchet and Clank is a great series, if I had a PS3 I would be picking this one up for sure. The game looks gorgeous and from what I've heard, it plays great. No surprise considering the other games were excellent as well.

When asked about the delay of Super Smash Bros. Melee into February 2008, Kaplan avoided offering a specific reason, promising only that the extra development time would go towards ensuring the game’s high quality.

Oh crap!!! God only knows when Brawl is going to come out! Being that Melee isn't coming out until Feb 08, I suppose we can expect Brawl somewhere around 2013.

I actually found God Of War's "Normal" difficulty to be just about perfect for me, except for the very last fight in the whole game, that is.

My roommate is a huge Devil May Cry fan, are they worth picking up?

Devil May Cry 3 is awesome, 1 and 2 aren't as good. The first Devil May Cry is crazy hard and the camera angles and control mechanics are just not up to par, overal l it makes the game pretty frustrating. The DMC Anniversary Pack is a pretty good deal and probably worth owning. I'm pretty sure it goes for about $30 new, which you just can't go wrong with. It is a very hard series though, even on the normal difficulty, so keep that in mind...

Does this mean that we can get Chris Hanson in Brawl too as the Pedo Chatter's Arch Nemesis. He will be an Assist Trophy who makes everyone on the screen who is a Pedo Chatter blow their brains out.

I don't get the whole God of War hype either. I thought the game was like a crappy Prince of Persia. Repetitive combat and simple boring puzzles. No Thanks. 8 at best in my book.

That is definitely disappointing. I wish they would've just kept it the same that way people using it were at some sort of disadvantage.

As far as removing wavedashing as evening the playing field, it does because now everyone only has the standard set of moves to work with. When you have an EXPLOIT, you can only expect people to learn it once they have mastered all other techniques in the game. If there weren't varying level of skills the game would be boring, but people exploiting glitches in the code (or design) just makes a game no fun. Having people wavedash on wifi would piss me off to no end. Eventually no one would play on there but experts and wifi would be regulated only to mataches with friends which is garbage.

2992
Wow that's awesome that they removed Wavedashing. The technique was really cheap during fights and I'm glad to see that they fixed that part of the game. In order to get to the next level in Melee you had to start Wavedashing and it removed all fun in the game. Now that this technique is gone it should help level the playing field and make the game more enjoyable for all.

... well that's not exactly right, Gizmodo posted it over this whole Halo 3 battle they were planning. I guess it got a little out of hand and Crecente actually posted an apology over the situation because it was very very NSFW.

Though, everyone is entitled to their opinion of the site, I personally don't see why the site is so terrible. Sure there is alot of extra nonsense on there aside from just game news, but they rarely miss a beat, so I can deal with the extra garbage.

TalkBack / RE: EDITORIALS: On Ratings

Hell it would even be nice if game reviews were done in a group setting. I want to hear all aspects and viewpoints so I can place myself somewhere in the group and figure out what the game offers me in particular. I really like the whole idea of multiple viewpoints depending on gamer type. That combined with an effective rating system and a write up describing the major features of the game would be awesome. I don't really read reviews anymore to figure out what I want. The combination of previews and videos from the collection of sites out there I can usually feel the game out well enough to make a decision before the review even hits. Most of the time when I read a review I use it as a validation tool, however most of the time it is ineffective because my tastes often do not line up with those of the reviewer.

TalkBack / RE: EDITORIALS: On Ratings

I think you are touching on a really nice system S_B, but it might be extremely hard to remove yourself (as the reviewer) to the point where you can see how a game fits the needs of a crowd you are not a part of. The marketing words for describing a gamer don't help either, but I can definitely see what you're going for.

The review system is extremely broken and I think as time has passed, some game publications are realizing this and trying to make strides toward revising the system to one that really fits the needs of the readers. Anything at this point that will change the system would be welcomed.

Well there are alot of comments here already but  I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents. The review system should be as follows:

Rating
- Recommended for Everyone
- Recommended for Fans
- Not Recommended

List of Pros & Cons

Review Text

Multiple reviewers should at least provide their rating and list of pros & cons. If multiple reviewers can, they should provide a body of text.

With a system like this you put the most important points forward from a variety of people, and readers can distinguish some sort of value based on what each reviewer felt the pros and cons were. Also if a breakdown is given of each subcategory (ie Graphics, Lastability, Presentation, Controls), Graphics should now be "Art Direction." Chances are, if the Art Direction is crap the graphics will be too, but vice-versa it won't necessarily be true (ie Cubivore, Katamari Damacy, etc).

Otherwise, great write up Evan, I think you touched on some very good points.
