As long as GH3 is the same as 1 and 2, I'm assuming it is, you can unlock everything by playing in lower settings. Also you do not earn cash from the bonus songs. You still might want to prioritize your purchases. IMHO it is a better idea to unlock songs first and go for the other goodies after.

I agree 100%.  I haven't failed a medium song yet (only played about 4), but my notes hit goes from the mid-nineties to the seventies.

When do they add the fifth fret--hard or expert?

Also, I can already tell I'm going to have a devilish time once they add that fifth fret.  My concern is that I'm not going to be able to unlock all the songs/extras because I'll run out of money.  It seems that you don't get paid twice for completing a song on the same difficulty more than once.  Does this mean I'm eventually going to run out of cash once I hit a brick wall in the career mode, or is there another way of earning money?

They add the fifth fret in Hard and then make the patterns more complicated in Expert. You will eventually run out of money and be required to earn more money by getting a higher number of stars on the songs. 5 stars will net you the max amount of available cash from the song. If you beat a song and get 3 stars, when you beat the same song again and get 5 stars, earned money on the song = 5 star money value - 3 star money value.

So on any given song lets say 3 stars is worth $300 and 4 stars is worth $400 and 5 stars is worth $500.
The first time you beat the song you get 3 stars and earn $300.
The second time you beat the song you get 5 stars, so you will earn $500 minus the $300 you already made earning you another $200.
Now that you have 5 stars move on to a new song because you can no longer earn money from the song.

It's funny to see all the conversation about GH on here. I remember going through all of this stuff the first time I played too. Once you blast through medium, hard won't seem too bad. About half way through hard you should move into expert and get your feet wet. Start playing both hard and expert in unison and by the time you finish hard, you should be well prepared to rip expert. It's a fun voyage getting up to expert, enjoy the ride. I'll be eventually picking this up on the 360 since I already have the hardware from GH2. I burned myself out on GH between 1 and 2. Time for me to take a break for a little while, I tend to get addicted to playing it.

I think this is one of those issues that is overstated on both ends. Companies are crying out about how piracy is destroying their industry (which it isn't) and pirates are proclaiming that what they do hurts no one (also untrue). Piracy has some impact on the industry, is that impact major, I highly doubt it. In order to make up for piracy the industry will just raise the price and get the money from the people who want to pay for the item. Clearly if the pirates feel wronged there must be a reason. Is it because stuff costs too much, are they "sticking it to the man?" I'm not sure, but clearly something with the industry is wrong or else this "problem" wouldn't be as prevalent as it is. Clearly if some resolution is to be met both sides need to act more reasonably to find that equilibrium. Will that ever happen? Doubtful, but it is the only way this problem will become a non-issue. As I said before the hardcore pirates will stop for no one and are a lost cause. Don't punish the true consumers with DRM and such in an attempt to thwart the hardcore, it's a losing battle.

Or do you begrudge me for pre-ordering through that indie site? Would it make you feel better if you knew that online pre-orders through them involve no money down?

I would say supporting other suppliers is a much better thing to do. Gamestop is far too large and actually is able to make a difference in the industry. By not endorsing them or their preorder system you are doing the right thing. Not that Gamestop is some evil establishment, they are just too powerful and control too much of the market which is to the detriment of the gaming industry.

Perhaps these companies can be held to some sort of standard where they guarantee a certain number of copies of their game will sell and anything that doesn't will be recalled. This would probably greatly limit the amount of shovelware out there and fix the supply and preorder issues. Two birds, One stone.

I do begrudge Gamestop making money on preorders because it is their driving force to offering the service. They couldn't careless if it guarantees you the game, it guarantees them a sale and it guarantees them interest on preorder cash. The side effect is hurting the small guys. Between that store and the big gaming media, indie gaming is being hurt if not killed. This is a pretty serious issue and only appears to be getting worse. I tend to agree with vudu here, if you aren't a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem...

Preordering is such a crappy system anyway because you never know if you will have the disposable income come release date to actually buy the game. If you don't buy it within x amount of time they sell the copy you preordered, but they had no problem holding your cash and making money on it for 8 months. Total BS.

General Gaming / Preordering Games
« on: October 31, 2007, 08:19:22 AM »
Recently in the Zack & Wiki thread, a discussion sprung up involving preordering games in order to show suppliers demand. Apparently GameCock is begging people to preorder small budget games because it spurs the game carriers to order more copies of the game for distribution.

Why is preordering becoming a standard for this industry? I believe this directly links gaming sites who are covering games and giving titles exposure to the gaming crowd direct power over the sales of a particular game (See Halo 3). Essentially we have created a system in gaming where any writer can spam his opinion and it will literally control the fate of the product. Why the hell is this happening? The big game carrier Gamestop is using Joe Shmoe casual gamer out there who preorders games as the representative of the gaming mass.

How do we fix this issue, how can we as gaming enthusiasts push the industry into stocking games(smaller budget) properly without relying on the casual gamer's preorders to determine the fate of a game? Preordering is an unnecessary step in purchasing a game and it ultimately pads the pockets of these big companies allowing them to make money on your invested cash. I refuse to put money down on a game unless I am getting something out of doing so.

I'm pretty sure the mass of gaming enthusiasts out there is starting to realize that there is an obvious flaw in the system of reviews. We need to streamline this process and put together a better system. Lots of good ideas have been put forward in this thread, it would be nice to see some of these ideas get implemented and put to good use.

7. Do you like the front page design?

8. Are there any more comments you have about Nintendo World Report in general?

Thank you so much.

1. The forums and the staff
2. The news and exclusive features on the site seem to be really lacking.
3. More podcasting type stuff, better news coverage (which you seem to be covering with the hirings)
4. N/A
5. Reviews, and Forums
6. Not first choice for news, first for reviews and the previews/impressions are more meaningful to me than on other sites.
7. The design has grown on me since it was rolled out, but I'm still not blown away.
8. Keep up the weekly podcasts, they rock. The forums are great, don't change them. Try involving the strong community more in the production of the site.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The OFFICIAL Wii rumor thread (updated 10/29/2007)

Haven't the Valve guys on multiple occasions stated that they have no intentions of developing for Wii because the box was not powerful enough for their games? I highly doubt that Valve would put the effort in to port Portal or Orange Box because of the perceived Wii demographic. Ditto on what Adrock said as well.

I forgot to mention that I got these bad boys in and I can say with much confidence that these things ROCK! They are very comfortable on the hands and definitely eliminate the worry of slip. They fit on the Wii remote perfectly and are definitely well made. I applaud Nintendo for these things, they did a great job with them and I am glad to have them on my Wii remotes.

Secondly, will the stage of the day just show up automatically on the stage select screen (assuming your Wii is connected to the internet)?  I mean, it's still cool even if you have to go to a special mode to see it, but it would be even cooler if it just showed up so if you played random stages every time occasionally you'd get a never before seen one.

Wow I didn't even think of this update working that seamlessly. I really hope it works as you have said Pale, it's just available right on the Stage Select screen without any effort from the player to go to a special mode.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Zelda DS: Phantom Hourglass
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:27:03 AM »
I'm just about done with this game, and I must say I'm really disappointed by it. The controls were pretty crappy IMHO, I would much rather have used the D-Pad and buttons. The controls as a result dumb down the combat and made it frustrating to switch weapons on the fly without getting hurt. I felt like the game didn't have a ton of substance and it was far too linear. Redoing the Temple of the Ocean King 10 million times was just flat out irritating and pointless. Give me back my traditional Zelda. Slapping on a new control scheme doesn't all of sudden make the game innovative. 7.5 really was a spot on review and I couldn't agree more with the points made by Zach.

I agree with him. I've downloaded some pieces of entertainment that weren't released in the US, and I don't feel that bad about it.

I tend to agree with this idea as well. If importing was more reasonable I wouldn't even dream of it.

However, just because you are poor it doesn't really give you the right to steal something. But in the end, who cares? Your average consumer IS purchasing games. Most people would rather pay for something than steal it. We are generally moral beings and want to do the right thing.

If it really gets that bad and more people are stealing your product than buying it, clearly the price of your product doesn't match up with the expected price in the market and needs to come down, solving your theft issue. If games, movies, music etc. were more reasonably priced, people would be less likely to steal. Though, it is not always a guarantee that people will stop stealing, that is the most likely outcome. There will always be a group of people who are going to steal something no matter what the price is. Those people are definitely the minority though because if they were not all of these entertainment companies would not still be in business

  4. Is there a possibility of using are own pictures as backgrounds?
  5. Is the music selection strictly whats already in Brawl?
  6. Will there be updates for the issues this will most likely bring up?
  7. Are we stuck with Battle Stages or could we make Break the Target and like?

Those are just a few things I like to know.  I really hate to get a level I truly enjoyed and only be able to use it for one day.

I'd bet we will be able to save the daily stage.
Doubtful on scripting triggers.
Personal pictures as backgrounds is very possible, especially with the Wii photo channel so easily available.
Good question on the music selection, I'm starting to think MP3s will be able to be used.
Updates seem to be possible but unlikely because of Nintendo's constant dismissal of the benefit of HDD use.
I'm guessing this will be limited to battle stages.

Who knows with anything though, Sakurai is pulling the craziest sh!t with this game. I'm guessing this is going to be the last Smash for a VERY LONG TIME. He is going to be cramming every bit of awesomeness possible into this game, so like I said anything is possible.

This is easily one of the greatest announcements thus far. I was hoping this would see a release in this game and here it is. Making and sharing your own stages for Smash is probably the greatest feature ever.

People who know jack about computers. As a programmer, for me back-end improvements = better performance from the hardware I already own. So when I'm running an IDE, an app server, a database viewer, the terminal, an AIM client and my web browser, my computer is less likely to slow down or crash.

If you like a safer more secure OS you probably like back end changes too. Now my computer is running Leopard which randomizes items in memory which totally kills the ability to do buffer overflowing, and it sandboxes applications, just another step towards curbing the threat of viruses and hacking. Guess that stuff sucks and isn't worth caring about.

Pretty ridiculous that you felt the need to step into this thread and troll. Why don't you let me know what's cool that way I can get excited about it and "circlejerk" with you?

$129 is a pretty steep investment for what you get. Most of the improvement is on the backend, though the frontend stuff is nice. I would probably hold off till you get some more cash in hand. Though it is fantastic, $129 is a ton of money if you can't even afford videogames.
