Nintendo has announced the launch of the WiiWare service today in Australia. The launch of the service brings six titles including some that have already seen release in America over the past two weeks and others that are still yet to be released.

Nintendo Announces WiiWare Launch for Australia

Nintendo's new game download service for consumers and developers

Melbourne Australia, 20 May, 2008 - Now the Wii Shop Channel offers  Wii™ owners more, with today's launch of WiiWare™.

WiiWare is a new game download service, accessible via the Wii Shop  Channel, where users can download a variety of new games in exchange  for Wii Points. The Wii Shop Channel is free to access and is where  WiiWare and Virtual Console games can be downloaded.

Whereas Virtual Console allows consumers to download classic games,  WiiWare offers brand new titles, and is also an opportunity for video  game developers to create new games for Wii. Developers, no matter how  big or small, will be able to create new downloadable games to be sold  through the Wii Shop Channel. Changing the way developers create Wii  games and how players access them, WiiWare will make it possible for  smaller, creative titles to take centre stage. The combination of low  development barriers and unique game experiences, through use of the  Wii remote, will enable developers to try new ideas with lower risk in  a quicker, more creative and affordable way.

WiiWare games will come from celebrated developers such as Square  Enix, creators of FINAL FANTASY(R) CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a  King™; as well as up and coming developers such as Frontier, creators  of the unique platform adventure Lost Winds™, and other independent  developers with great game ideas.

The first WiiWare games available include:
 Lost Winds™
 Star Soldier R
 Dr. Mario & Germ Buster™
 Toki Tori Take 2
 TV Show King
FINAL FANTASY(R) CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a King™

WiiWare also empowers consumers to determine with their Wii Points  which games have the ability to become the next big thing. Consumers  will assist in the creative process as their choices will directly  determine the success of current projects and direct the plans for  future ones.

There will be something for everyone on WiiWare with a wide range of  games from varying genres, concepts and price levels.

A broadband internet connection is required to access WiiWare.

TalkBack / This Week's Virtual Console … and WiiWare
« on: May 19, 2008, 04:48:10 PM »
This week brings two WiiWare titles and one NES title for the Virtual Console.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15985

Week two of WiiWare has arrived, and with it comes two new titles: Critter Round-Up and the shooter Star Soldier R. Coming along with these two titles is the NES release, SKYKID.

Critter Round-Up is a puzzle-action game that tasks the player with quickly corralling the animals in the barnyard. In order to corral the animals, players will need to mend fences to keep them safe and satisfied. Aside from the main puzzle game, Critter Round-Up includes 50 challenge levels and a series of minigames including Snowball Soccer, Predator Rampage, Chicken Catch, and Fence Trap. In addition, up to four players are able to either compete or cooperate. Critter Round-Up is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now through the Wii Shop channel for 1,000 Wii Points.

Star Soldier R is another space shooter, but a unique one that tasks the player with obtaining the best score possible within a time limit of two or five minutes. Players will need to develop the best possible strategy to compete on online leaderboards with the world's best players. Star Soldier R is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now through the Wii Shop Channel for 800 Wii Points.

Along with the two new WiiWare titles, the NES sees another release through the Virtual Console. SKYKID is a side-scrolling shooter where the player takes to the skies as the Red Baron to defeat his rival, Blue Max. Players will need to defeat enemies using the various skills of the Red Baron, including the patented loop-the-loop. The main adventure also supports co-op play, allowing two players to simultaneously progress though the game. SKYKID is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now for the Virtual Console for the NES standard, 500 Wii Points.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

May 19, 2008

Today begins a new phase for the Wii-kly Update. From now on, we'll have all the information about the arrival of both WiiWare™ and Virtual Console™ games. So basically you're getting access to the best games of the past and the coolest creations of the present. With this week's releases you can blast space-based enemies with your starfighter, fly the not-always-friendly skies or even corral some cute critters in the barnyard.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare

Critter Round-Up (Konami, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The critters have escaped, and the barnyard is in chaos! It's up to you to quickly corral the animals in this puzzle-action challenge. You'll have to mend fences in a hurry to keep all the critters safe and satisfied. But the fun doesn't stop with the farmland; more than 50 challenging levels take you to several exotic locations, including the outback, the icy Arctic and more. There's even a series of minigames for when the critters get you down: Snowball Soccer, Predator Rampage, Chicken Catch and Fence Trap. Up to four players can compete or cooperate as the critters run wild. So roll up those sleeves and grab a friend-those critters won't catch themselves.

Star Soldier R (Hudson Entertainment, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Star Soldier R is a new kind of shooter where players aim for the best scores within a two- or five-minute time limit. Develop various scoring strategies, and pump out those points within the breakneck time frame. Assembled in record time to counter the advance of a powerful enemy, the mysterious Brain Forces, the "Caesar" starfighter takes off to fight for the very future of mankind. Shoot down countless enemies, upgrade your ship to the max with power-ups hidden throughout the levels and wage an all-out assault against the core of the enemy fortress. Combining the excitement of shoot-'em-ups with in-depth scoring strategies, this state-of-the-art competitive shooter will keep you coming back for more. Upload your best scores with Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, and pit your skills against the world's best fighter pilots from the comfort of your living room. Hone your skills and show the world who's boss.

Virtual Console

SKYKID™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): Red Baron, from the freedom- and peace-loving nation of birds, Bird Land, faces off in the skies with his rival Blue Max in this side-scrolling shooting game. Defeat the many enemies that await you as you complete your mission, using moves like the loop-the-loop to shoot down enemies from behind. Fly low to pick up bombs placed in the stage and drop them on command posts, warships or other designated targets to destroy them. Then land safely at base to proceed to the next mission. Beware of enemy fire, though-it will cause you to crash, unless you're able to recover by rapidly pressing the buttons. You can even play with a second person and fly simultaneously, sometimes helping each other and other times competing against each other. Prepare yourself and take to the skies, but make sure that the catchy background music (which became an instant classic when this game was originally released) doesn't distract you from your goal.

TalkBack / Namco-Bandai's Family Trainer Coming to Wii
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:44:00 AM »
Includes a special "mat controller" for total body gameplay that the whole family can enjoy.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15977

Atari announced yesterday that they planned to bring a continuation of Namco-Bandai's Family Trainer series to the Wii. Similar to the old NES series, Family Trainer will include a mat controller peripheral used to play the game. The Power Pad used on the NES is sure to be an inspiration for the new mat, as Bandai was the developer of the original.

Family Trainer will include simple mini games that make use of both the Wii Remote and mat controller.  Including both single and multiplayer challenges, the entire family can enjoy the game together. Events included range from mine karting and log jumping, to river rafting and rope skipping. These events will occur at many locales including ancient ruins, jungle forests, a haunted mansion, and a fairy tale world. Players will also be able to track their progress and set records that the rest of the family can try and best.

Family Trainer will be available in Europe this September, with no word on release in American and Japanese territories.

GET PHYSICAL WITH 'FAMILY TRAINER'

- Active Fun for Everyone with Total Body Gameplay Coming to Europe in September 2008 Exclusively for Wii -

LYON, FRANCE – 13 May 2008 – Atari today announced the forthcoming European release of NAMCO BANDAI Games’ Family Trainer exclusively for Wii. Family Trainer lets all the family and friends get physical by engaging the whole body in a variety of easy-to-understand, fast-paced and wildly entertaining activities. Family Trainer is scheduled for European release in September 2008.

The game includes the specially designed Family Trainer mat controller which, when combined with the Wii Remote, lets players get totally physical in a series of crazed challenges. Unlike other games for the Wii which only focus on the arms, Family Trainer gets the feet involved too for total body gameplay. Simple controls and intuitive play make the game easy to just pick up and play, and let players of any age get involved, get physical and have maximum fun.

There are over a dozen frantic single and multiplayer challenges to choose from all based on outdoor challenges amusingly interpreted for the world of Family Trainer, such as river rafting, mine karting, log jumping, rope skipping and much more. The activities take place in a variety of colourful locations including jungle forests full of ancient ruins, a haunted mansion complete with hordes of zombies, and a fairytale world where riding on toys and floating amongst the clouds is the order of the day.

Players can challenge friends or family members on the same mat, or cooperate together, for example trying to balance a runaway mine kart as it hurtles round a gravity defying track. Players can track their progress and set new records for their friends and family to beat, bringing a dose of healthy competition into the madcap mix.

Family Trainer is scheduled for European release in September 2008 exclusively for Wii.

« on: May 15, 2008, 10:35:47 PM »
According to series creator Michel Ancel the popular series will continue. However, it is still awaiting Ubisoft approval.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15966

According to an interview with the creator of Beyond Good and Evil, Michel Ancel, a sequel to the sleeper hit has been in preproduction for the past year. Unfortunately, the small team that has been working on the game thus far has not been given production approval yet by Ubisoft.

Michel Ancel also explained that with this sequel, they intend to progress the story from where it left off at the end of the first game, looking to the future of the planet Hillys. They also intend on continuing to offer a wide variety of gameplay types in the game as well as continuing to create characters that the player can develop an emotional attachment to. There was also some mention of relationships with animals in the game but this was not fully explained by Mr. Ancel.

Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise also includes twelve full motion video clips that serve as tutorial levels within the game. The videos feature the stars of the Fox 4Kids Viva Piñata TV series, including Hudson Horstashio™, Fergy Fudgehog™ and Paulie Pretztail™. The brand-new Playground mode allows players to create a lush garden full of exciting and exotic piñatas in a very short amount of time. In addition, certain rare piñatas can only be acquired by using the Nintendo DS local wireless connection, where players can transfer items from their garden to a friend's garden.

Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise is developed by Rare Ltd., one of the world's leading video game developers and masterminds behind some of the most popular video games in history, including multi-million-dollar sellers "GoldenEye", "Perfect Dark", "Banjo-Kazooie" and the "Donkey Kong Country" Series. TalkBack / Protöthea to Launch with WiiWare Service
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:06:59 PM »
Ubisoft's title is a top-down vertically scrolling shooter with unscripted enemy AI.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15915

Ubisoft announced Moday that they intend to bring Protöthea, a PC shooter originally released in 2005, to Nintendo’s WiiWare service with a number of improvements.

Protöthea is a top-down, vertically scrolling shooter that makes use of both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for controlling a futuristic spaceship. Players will be able to attack air and ground enemies with a number of weapons. Unlike many other shooters, enemy movements and attacks are not scripted, instead they are dependent on the actions of the player.

Protöthea will be available at the launch of the WiiWare service, next Monday, for 1,000 Wii Points.

Ubisoft Announces Protöthea™ for WiiWare™

SAN FRANCISCO – May 6, 2008 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced that Protöthea™ will be available in May for WiiWare™ in North America – Protöthea is rated “E” for Everyone.

Protöthea, Ubisoft’s exclusive WiiWare launch window title, is a 3D top-down vertical scrolling shooter game putting players in complete control of a last-generation spaceship via the Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™. The easy-to-play game introduces new concepts to a beloved classic game style while mixing genres and utilizing the full capabilities of the Wii™ system, from graphics to controls.

“Ubisoft is excited to bring Protöthea exclusively to the platform and we feel it’s a must-have WiiWare title,” shared James Regan, vice president of third party operations, Ubisoft. “Protöthea really reminds me of some of the best arcade games, with the Wii Remote as an added dimension. It’s just a flurry of fast-paced action that anyone can simply pick up and enjoy.”

The compelling storyline immerses players into an adventure where they will need to destroy an asteroid called “Maqno 01” and sabotage the plans of a political faction called “The Core.” Players will quickly jump right in and guide their ship through multiple missions on futuristic planets where enemy AI is dynamic and will change based on the player’s actions – so there are no predictable enemy paths, and therefore always a different game play experience. Players will have a wide range of eight different air-to-air weapons and two different air-to-ground bombs at their disposal, and can attack however they choose. In addition, there is a special power that decelerates time, allowing players to easily avoid enemy fire while they are able to move rapidly and attack enemies.

TalkBack / REVIEWS: Speed Racer
« on: May 05, 2008, 11:58:06 PM »
One part F-Zero GX, one part Burnout, and a pinch of Mario Kart.
 http://nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=15907

Speed Racer is not your typical movie game. Instead of looking to recreate the movie experience, it strives to create an extension of that experience. It strips away all of the elements of the movie and focuses solely on the core concept: racing. The full cast of racers from the movie are represented along with their custom rides and the voices of their real-life counterparts. Along with that, some of the film’s music is also featured in the background.

The core of Speed Racer is an interesting blend of fast-paced racing and car combat, a seemingly perfect blend of F-Zero GX and Burnout. Similar to Burnout, you are able to impede the progress of other racers by attacking them. But instead of performing takedowns, you perform “Car-Fu.” Car-Fu consists of a variety of moves including shunts, tail-flips, jack jumps, torpedoes and smackdowns, but its influence on each race is far deeper than any mechanic in Burnout. Not only does Car-Fu build your boost meter and put a temporary halt to your opponent’s progress, but it also builds up points which ultimately aid your placement in the overall competition. As mentioned earlier, Speed Racer takes cues from F-Zero GX in terms of both speed and track design. Featuring up to twenty competitors per race, Speed Racer brings the same crowded tracks found in F-Zero GX.

The aforementioned details add significant depth to a seemingly simple racing engine, and the Ally/Rival system only further accentuates this depth. Before each race, you can request and break alliances between the other racers participating in the tournament. On the surface this seems simple enough, but its complexity lies within finding the perfect balance of allies and rivals. Building as many alliances as possible decreases the frequency with which Car-Fu will be performed on you; however, you begin to realize that you can’t leverage these other racers during the race to perform Car-Fu. Conversely, this holds true with breaking alliances and creating rivals. Too many rivals and you will be incessantly bombarded with Car-Fu attacks; however, you will have the ability to perform massive amounts of Car-Fu, which when executed on rivals, nets additional points and boost.

The final layer of core gameplay depth is constituted of boosting and drafting. Drafting, known as slipstreaming in the Speed Racer universe, becomes yet another double-edged sword. It will decrease the drag on your vehicle and ultimately let you travel faster, but it tends to anger computer players.  Striking a balance is absolutely critical, because slipstreaming too much results in being pelted with non-stop Car-Fu, and doing it too little prevents you from keeping up with the other racers.

Boosting is also critical as it will keep you in the race. Avoiding the edges of each stage and performing Car-Fu will build up your boost meter. Once full, the boost meter will refill again, storing a full boost in your inventory. Up to four boosts can be housed at one time, and unlike other boosting systems, all four of them can be dropped back-to-back to put you “In the Zone.” When In the Zone, you are immune to Car-Fu and you max out your engine speed. Boosts also double as a health supplements; when Car-Fu is performed on you, your health meter will decrease until it hits empty and you explode. Exploding isn’t race-ending, but it severely hampers your progress and makes success in the higher difficulty settings nearly impossible.

As you can see, the racing system is quite layered with a strong emphasis on using the full gamut of your arsenal to win. Thankfully, the control setup does an excellent job of making all of it accessible. Steering is performed by using the Wii Wheel, or Excite Truck-style holding the Wii Remote like an NES controller. Performing Car-Fu is done through quick jerks of the remote either upwards or sideways; holding different directions on the D-Pad allows you to perform different moves. Shunting someone with a quick jerk of the Wii Remote feels very natural, visceral, and satisfying. Accelerating, boosting, braking and health are mapped to the various buttons on the Wii Remote, and are well laid-out and quickly accessible in the heat of a race.

Unfortunately, Speed Racer lacks in a few other departments. The track design is very bland and uninspired; with only five different track environments, you grow tired of seeing the same settings in each and every circuit. It falls short graphically as well; the tracks themselves look good as do the racers, but the surroundings are low-poly, low-res and outright boring.

The game as a whole is also very short, and really only has three modes: championship circuit, time attack, and a paltry two-player split-screen multiplayer mode. Upon exhausting the championship circuit, there is literally nothing to come back to. Online mode is sorely missed as it would have given players a renewable experience. Having experienced Nintendo’s accomplishments with online racing in Mario Kart, it makes the exclusion of the mode hurt that much more.

Speed Racer at its core is an amazing game, with great depth, control, and nice difficulty progression. Perhaps Sidhe Interactive will use this great engine (and maybe even the Speed Racer license) for another title with more inspired track design, better graphics, and a more fully-featured package overall.  As it stands, its slim feature-set and exclusion of both online racing and four-player split-screen multiplayer lowers it from a must-purchase to simply a rental.

Pros:

  • Outstanding core racing elements
  •
  • Controls are nearly perfect

  •        Cons:

  • Very short
  •
  • Uninspired graphics and tracks
  •
  • No online or four-player split-screen multiplayer

  •                Graphics:  6.0
Bland-looking environments and tracks that look bad, even at high speeds.

                   Sound:  7.0
Entertaining voice acting that doubles as a functional element, alerting you of the actions and locations of other racers.  It’s an element that gives the game and the races more personality. Background music is blasé and doesn’t do much to increase the intensity of the race.

                   Control:  9.5
Controlling the game with or without the Wii Wheel works beautifully. Performing Car-Fu feels satisfying and steering never feels unwieldy. The controls only become troublesome in rare occasions when you need to steer out of a hard spin.

                          Gameplay:  9.5
The game itself is extremely deep, requiring large amounts of strategy and skill. It’s a blast to play with the Wii Wheel, and by the time you finish everything you’ll be begging for more.

           Lastability:  5.0
You’ll get a solid eight to ten hours out of the main competition mode and that’s about it. Without online or any other sort of mode, there is little else to do. By the time you beat everything, going back and replaying the early competitions is a waste because they are significantly easier than the ones you will need to master at the end.

           Final:  7.5
Speed Racer at its core is phenomenal, but ultimately falters because it doesn’t have enough meat to it. Had the game been more fully-featured it could have easily scored much higher, but as it stands it’s a great rental that all racing fans should look into. Sidhe Interactive would be wise to take this formula to the next level with a new IP, and really deliver a more robust package.

TalkBack / Mario Kart Wii Tournaments Begin
    « on: May 03, 2008, 03:41:52 AM »
Take on racers worldwide in challenges provided by the Mario Kart Channel.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15900

Nintendo is offering tournaments for Mario kart Wii players worldwide to compete in. The tournaments appear in the Mario Kart Channel, which can be installed via the Mario Kart Wii game disc. Each tournament will take on a unique shape, requiring the player to perform different feats to the best of their ability. The first tournament was made available last Thursday, and Nintendo plans to offer new challenges every few weeks.

The tournament made available Thursday asks racers to compete for the fastest time on the Mario Circuit stage. The course was given a slight alteration in view of the competition, resulting in a number of Chain Chomp enemies moving against traffic throughout the race. In addition, this particular tournament is not raced solo but alongside a full repertoire of computer opponents.

Racers can take the challenge as many times as they would like during the duration of the tournament. After one score is submitted, leaderboards become available for viewing. Their performance is matched up first against friends, then regional players, and finally compared to Mario Kart racers worldwide. A top ten list is provided for each category.

Players will be able to compete in and enjoy this first tournament up until May 9 when Nintendo will officially declare a winner.

NINTENDO ANNOUNCES WORLDWIDE MARIO KART WII TOURNAMENTS

    May 1, 2008

Nintendo has thrown down the gauntlet for Mario Kart® Wii racers worldwide. Now it's time to see who's up to the challenge, as players take on the world in Mario Kart Wii Tournaments.

Every few weeks, a new tournament will appear on the Mario Kart Channel, an online feature that not only allows players to compete in tournaments, but also exchange race data with friends. Tournaments might take the form of a challenge for players to race a certain course as fast as they can with specific characters, or to collect a number of coins on a course using the Wii Wheel™ accessory or another control setup. They can feature unique rules or obstacles on the course.

The first tournament, which appears today, directs racers to compete for the fastest time on the Mario Circuit. Look closely though – something may be different. Players can attempt the challenge as often as they like during the duration of the tournament. Their best time will be recorded and added to the worldwide rankings, allowing players to see how they stack up against the best racers from around the world.

NOTE: If you would like to participate in Mario Kart Wii tournaments, your Wii™ console needs to be connected to the Internet. For more information about how to get online, visit Wii.com. For more information about Mario Kart Wii, please visit www.MarioKart.com.
