Do I want to host the next mafia game? This is a question on many minds. I have not made any firm decision, but I have launched an exploratory committee to determine whether I should go ahead and run for the position of Mafia XIV host. I will talk to my family over the coming days, and we will discuss whether running would be the best course of action for both myself and the funhouse. I will make a formal announcement of my decision soon.

A little gory but that kind of fits the subject matter.

Well, definitely too gory for Nintendo. I was thinking it would be a third party game.

I like your ideas, Ian. What you describe, at first, conjured up bad memories of the sword fighting in Red Steel...but I think the problem there wasn't the underlying ideas so much as the execution. I, too, loved the sword fights in OOT...and I think a game based around that kind of one-on-one fighting could be very cool.

In any case, whatever form it takes, someone, somewhere definitely needs to make a Wii game based around combat with medieval weapons.

All the Sonic games since then have had such horrible reviews that I've never tried them, and I've had a friend who bought STH on 360 return it in a fit of rage.

You might consider renting shadow. I've never played it, but I remember at least one reviewer saying he gave it such a low score, not because it was any worse than the previous games, but because he was tired of issues like bad camera going unresolved.

Also, feedback on the "theme song" would be appreciated. I had a very loose idea for what I wanted to do, and then most of it was made up during that one take (including the percussion). If we decide to keep using it, I'll probably record a more polished version with a horn section and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra and Carlos Santana.

I liked the harmonica bits. Please go ahead, a change in theme song would be most welcome. In fact, I specifically listened to this episode because I thought there was going to be a new theme song, only to be disappointed to find my ears bleeding once again. No offense, but the Jason Ricci (or whoever) song you're using now makes the music in Excite Truck sound good by comparison.

So, people have been talking about how Nintendo needs a franchise that is new and hip and poppin' fresh. But what might such a game be about? I'm thinking gladiators.

Imagine an RE4-style camera and control scheme. You see your character on one side of the screen, clad in armor and carrying a large flail. You're standing on a field (why is a gladiator match taking place on a field, with no spectators around, instead of a stadium? Who cares? Maybe the game is really set in the future, and the matches take place on a holodeck, or something.) Just then, an arrow whizzes by your head. You see it is your friend, who you are playing against online, who is shooting at you from behind a rock on a hill. "Heads up!" you hear your friend call, over the headset you are wearing. You start running up the hill towards him, dodging his arrows. As you get nearer, you start swinging the wiimote around in circles above your head, and your character follows by swinging the flail.

...You're almost on top of him now. Your friend didn't expect you to be able to get so close to him. His arrows are useless at such close range: one can't move (apart from some simple dodges) and aim at the same time. He backs up and draws his sword. But he's no match for you and your flail. His last words, as the ball and chain come hurtling towards him, are "oh sh*t."  The spiked ball catches on his neck, and blood starts spurting out. You yank the weapon out of him swing it around one more time. It hits his face, finishing him.

....Just then, a sword comes swinging down from behind you. It slices your arm clean off, and blood starts gushing out. You look down at ground, where your arm and flail sit. Then you turn around, just in time to see your other friend stab you in the stomach.

Yeah.

I don't mean a literal Halo equivalent. I mean something new and different that attracts the same amount of attention that Halo did. Something that younger gamers identify as one the "their games". A game that everyone is playing and everyone knows about. An "it" game.

I think the Wii could very well see such an "it" game. And it'll be thanks to the motion controller. It makes things happen. Someone, somewhere will come up with an idea for a multiplayer deathmatch type game that makes heavy use of motion control. It will be developed as a side project in a studio no one's ever heard of, and be completely ignored when it's shown off at E3. And then it'll be released and, to everyone's surprise, take the world by storm. Teenagers will play it with their friends non-stop for the next five years.

Myspace sues 'Spam King'

It must be him - if he's king of all the internet, he's king of all the spam, too.

1273
I suppose it's time for another exciting pm retrospective.

Day ONE:

I'm the investigator. People who post early are often mafia, and Dasmos posted early. It was probably because of his time zone, but just to be safe...
Quote

to: 18days
Investigate dasmos please.

My suspicions were justified. Dasmos is mario, funhouse mafia goon.

Day TWO:

Quote

to: 18days
Investigate vudu, please.

Vudu is the townie idiot. 18days hints that he doesn't know it, and that I shouldn't tell him. Why shouldn't I tell him? Would that put me in danger some how?

Quote

to: 18days
Don't tell him? Err, why?

Quote

to: vudu
Hey. Dasmos is mafia.

Vudu replies that he's not going to do anything with the information right now, because no one else is voting for Dasmos, and he doesn't want to be targeted. But if I could get other people against Dasmos, he'd join.

Meanwhile, 18days has responded to my query. He makes it clear that he wanted me to keep vudu in the dark for his own amusement, and not because I was in any danger.

Quote

to: vudu
Alright, I'll try to wrangle up some troops.

BTW, um. This is a bit awkward. Do you think you're vudu? I mean, the investigator? I've gotten the impression from 18days that you do. You're not. You're the townie idiot. I'm vudu.

...unless I'm the townie idiot.

Vudu responds that he doesn't think he's the investigator, but doesn't respond to my assertion that he's the townie idiot. Did he just want to keep his cards close to his chest, in case I was a bad guy? Or was he embarrassed about being the idiot? Hmm. He also mentions that Pale said he's a townie, and that he's inclined to believe Pale.

Quote

to: 18days
Investigate pale please.

Day THREE:

Pale is Jeff Shirely, says 18days. Then she corrects herself. Garnee is Jeff Shirely, pale is shift-key and on the funhouse team. 18days apologizes for her mistake.

Quote

to: 18days
That's fine. Investigate mario please.

Quote

to: vudu
pale is a member of funhouse mafia, same as dasmos. I'll join the Shift key bandwagon, it seems like he's in league with them.

Vudu says he's inclined to believe me, but asks if it wouldn't make more sense to rally the troops and go after a known mafia member.
Quote

to: vudu
I don't have troops! You're the only person I've investigated who's turned out to be innocent. Besides, it's a little late to start another bandwagon. Also, I'm afraid to stick my neck out.

But, fine, I'll pm some people, try to get a thing going against dasmos....

Vudu says he'll do the pming. He thought I was an intermediary, and not the actual investigator. I shouldn't, he thought, take any unnecessary risks. ...I had no objections to doing less work.
Quote

to: vudu
Okey dokey. If I vote for pale now, and you've told people you're in contact with the cop, it'll be a little too obvious I'm the cop. So I'll start by voting for someone else, then changing my vote.

Vudu says he sent PMS to MaryJane, Kairon, WindyMan, Spak-Spang, Artimus, ShyGuy and Athrun Zala. A little while later, vudu politely points out that, if the people he pmed see that he's the only one who's voted, they'll think he's full of sh*t.

Quote

to: vudu
Alright, alright. I've voted for him.

Vudu tells me athrun zala has requested that I investigate him.

Quote

to: vudu
Thanks. Investigated Athrun shall be.

Quote

to: 18days
Scratch that. Please investigate athrun zala instead.

Day FOUR:

Quote

to: vudu
*bangs head against wall* It was so obvious, too:

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3306/rabiclepy2.png

Note in particular the part where she hints that the village idiot thinks he's the investigator, and the part where she gives pale the role of a dead guy, before correcting herself.

Vudu replies that when I told him he was the village idiot, he thought I was joking. He says he'll try to get out of this one, but that it doesn't look good. Later, he politely suggests that I might try to convince people that he's the bomber (I opt instead to tell the truth, but it's too late.)

I feel bad. I knew there would be a badwagon against vudu, and I should've defended him much earlier in the day. Oh well.

Quote

to: vudu
I went the honest route. Perhaps not the wisest move, we'll see...

There was a chance that the mafias would consider the townie idiot a threat. There was something in the rules about him possibly being able to figure out who the turncoats were. But...eh. They probably already knew who I was, and probably considered me an a low priority.

Athrun zala contacts me, and says he suspected I was the townie idiot, and that that's why he asked me to investigate him. He asks me if there's anyone I'm suspicious of.

Quote

to: athrun zala
I'm voting for kairon. There's what mario said, about him trying to save garnee twice. Then there's the fact that he acknowledged vudu might be telling the truth - and then voted for him anyway, which strikes me as suspicious.

Athrun says he's suspicious of kairon as well. He mentions he suspects pryo is an investigator. And he asks me about the mole's post.
Quote

to: athrun zala
I believe [the mole] about spak-spang being mafia, but I'm worried that he was just guessing when he said vudu was the bomber. If he was, and if he's wrong, no one will believe him about spak-spang....

Athrun says he thinks that vudu maybe is the bomber. I know vudu probably isn't - it was doubtful that the bomber's evil plan involved finding out who the village idiot was, getting false information from him, and then spreading it.

Quote

to: 18days
Investigate mario please.

18days tells me mario is S-U-P-E-R, double agent....which means he absolutely isn't S-U-P-E-R. Hey, it's something.

Day FIVE:

ShyGuy contacts me about forming a townie alliance.

Quote

to: ShyGuy
Well, I've been in contact with athrun zala, but I kind of think he's mafia. Um, hm. I'll pm some people...

Quote

to: Mario
Why did you guys vote for ceric the other night? Did you have dirt on him? Because if there are any coordinated anti-mafia strikes going on, I'd like to be part of them.

I read over all the old threads for clues. I realize I've been confusing athrun zala with mystic gohan, and that athrun probably isn't mafia. I also realise something else. Meanwhile, ShyGuy pms to tell me he thinks mario may be on our side.

Quote

I was thinking the same thing. I shot him a pm.

BTW, I've been reading over the threads, and I take back what I said about Athrun Zala being a bad guy. Kairon, on the other hand, is so most definitely mafia. If no one has anything more concrete to go on, a bandwagon against him would be a good idea...

ShyGuy says he'll start the bandwagon. (Having other people do all the dirty work is fun.)

Quote

to: 18days
Investigate ceric please.

Day SIX:

Quote

to: ShyGuy
Thanks for starting that bandwagon - yesterday couldn't have turned out better.

Ceric is an interesting case, isn't he? Shiftkey says he is mafia, Kairon says he's not (both are former members of funhouse mafia.) It could be that shiftkey knows that ceric is the bomber (or a townie), and is coyly treating it as a given that he's a mafia member so people will vote for him. Or it could be that kairon knows he's mafia, and is trying to protect him...while shiftkey knows there's no point in trying.

I wish I knew what was behind the previous bandwagon against ceric, the one vudu and I cut off. I tried asking mario, he hasn't responded.

ShyGuy says he's nervous of the bomber, and asks if I have any ideas about who the next target should be.

Quote

to: ShyGuy
Hrrm, well I'm suspicious of MysticGohan. He just seems mafia-ish to me. I have nothing hard on him, though.

Quote

to: MysticGohan
Heya. Who do you think we should vote for? What do you think of Ceric?

Mystic says he doesn't know, and mentions, in as suspicious a manner as possible, how deadly a mistake would be with the bomber around.

I vote for mystic, and then two other people do as well. And just to make sure I don't die....
Quote

to: 18days
Just to clarify: if mystic gohan is voted out, and if he happens to be the bomber, infernal and windy would die, and I wouldn't, right? Windy sneakily edited his original post instead of creating a new one.

18days says yes, that's what would happen, and thanks me for telling him about windy's edit, as he hadn't noticed. (Sorry, windy!)

And that's all she wrote.

This time around, I was even more lazy and cowardly than usual. I didn't deserve to win. But that's how it goes.

Etoychest has a review up. It seems that the game is meatier than Trace Memory, which is good, and it doesn't lead you around by a string, which is also good. And the conversation system sounds intriguing.

Edit: gamepro has a review up too.
