Nintendo Gaming / RE: So how does the controller work, anyway?
« on: November 28, 2005, 06:06:41 AM »
Yeah my guess is the Revolution can measure the signal response times from the controller to the sensors on the sensor bar to calculate your location in 3d space.    It can also measure the tilt/rotation of the controller.

So it always knows where you are in 3d space and it knows in which direction you are pointed.  Combine this with some type of calibration in order to account for various TV sizes and the various relative placements of  the sensor bar to the tv screen and it can calculate where are you pointing to on the screen.

The calibration would really only be a one time setup as long as you don't move your TV or the sensor bar.   IT would probably involve pointing at the center and four corners of the screen like calibrating  a joystick on the pc and pressing a button each time.  And maybe repeating it a few times until it feels right.

edit:  perhaps they'll make it a requirement to center the sensor bar over or under your TV.   I can see this helping calibration.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: 3rd Party Support Already Starting to Look Up
« on: November 21, 2005, 03:26:11 PM »

I think it's fairly obvious that  the Revolution will be like the DS.  While the 360 and the PS3 will be like the PSP.

The Revolution will have a unique user interface and be cheaper.  The 360 and PS3 will have the multimedia stuff and better graphics and be more expensive.

Altho I think the games on the Revolution will look just as good as on the other consoles on a regular TV (unlike the DS vs PSP comparison) and the Revolution console itself will look as good or better than the other two (again unlike the DS vs PSP comparison.)

And like the DS the Revolution will get some flak for their weird interface (tho at the same time some aren't ripping on it as much yet because of how the DS is turning out) except with their new console I think Nintendo is going to launch some big titles a little sooner than they did on the DS.

I think Metroid Prime and SuperMario are definite Revolution launch titles.  This is because I believe this titles have been in development for awhile now.  SSBM I'm not sure about.  According to some recent news that I've read that title was not underway until after E3.  That doesn't give them much time to make a AAA Nintendo title.

SFA was horrible.  It lost me in the beginning when you walked to get something, but found out you couldn't until you got a second something.   So you'd walk to the second something only to find out you need a 3rd something to get the 2nd something so you could get the first something.

WW was about 1000x better.  A true classic.  A masterpiece.  Same with Mario Sunshine.

WEll I got 9,750,xxx on multi-mission bounty and collected 12 artifacts and beat the game.  Funny thing is I did that a couple days after I got the game and I haven't come close to that score since.

For not having alot of content it's actually pretty replayable.  I've been playing it every couple days for 20 minutes or so to see if I can beat the game again.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: More love for the Revolution!!!!
« on: November 19, 2005, 08:51:22 PM »
If you have any common sense at all in your bones then you'd figure out what the quote meant.  RAre is an MS company.  So it's obvious they aren't making games for the Revolution especially porting 360 launch titles to it.  lol.

And thus it's obvious that he's just saying that the REvolution technically could handle the game with little difficulty.

This illustrates what I've been saying all along.  And that's that the REvolution might be able to do bigger and badder games than the 360 albeit at a lower resolution even if it's overall less powerful.  That's because alot of the power of the 360 is devoted to making the game run smooth at the 720p.

AT the same time saying PDZ can run on the Revolution really doesn't mean that much.  IT's pretty easy to scale down games.  Every pcgamer knows about this.  Every pcgame has lots of options for turning on/off various graphical effects and turning the resolution up/down so games can run on everything from 4 yr old machines to today's top rigs.

Yeah I don't understand that.  I don't see the tracks in MarioKart DS as being better.   I don't see the game as being better.  If I had to choose I think I would choose DD over the DS version.

Nintendo Gaming / More love for the Revolution!!!!
« on: November 16, 2005, 03:44:40 PM »

"The amount of individual designer support for Nintendo's imaginative Revolution controller has been overwhelmingly positive. The Sims and SimCity creator Will Wright recently chatted with Shacknews about a variety of topics, including his personal thoughts on Revolution.

As has been seen from other designers, Wright is all for it. "I'm really interested in the Revolution to see how the controller works out. That looks pretty cool," he says. "It looks very interesting to me. I like the idea of taking the games more outside the box and more into that close-body kind of space."

Considering the answer came in response to a question about whether Wright had been playing anything interesting lately, the praise is noteworthy.

The amount of work still left on Wright's ambitious Spore project means it's too early to speculate whether he's considered working on a Revolution project, but positive word of mouth from the creator of the best selling PC game of all time certainly can't hurt. "

" Microsoft may be smiling from ear to ear with Kojima’s recent comments about the Xbox 360 hardware, but a Rare employee speaking to Eurogamer has given some love to Nintendo’s Revolution, as well. Multiplayer designer Duncan Botwood claims that Rare could actually port Perfect Dark Zero to Nintendo’s next-generation console:

We could make it work, but there’d be some changes to the gameplay, I expect; the controller looks like it might lend itself towards a light gun style of shooting, which would be a fresh approach.

Those are some kind words which hint at Nintendo’s ability to keep up with the competition, in terms of technology. However, Botwood showed some skepticism for Nintendo’s new controller: “Most people don’t use TV remote controls constantly for a whole hour, let alone wave them in the air all that time.”

Take your TV remote and swing it around in the air for awhile - how long do you think you could do that in one play session without getting tired? What if you had your arm resting and just moved your wrist?"

Nintendo Gaming / RE: My Revolution Conspiracy Theory
« on: November 16, 2005, 02:04:51 PM »
IF the Cube can launch at $200-$250 like it did this past generation and still be comparable in power to the Xbox and PS2 (a bit less than the former and a bit more than the latter) then the Revolution can launch at a similar price and have next-gen power.

Also realize the Cube could have quite a bit less power than the 360, but outperform the 360 at 480i/p.   Why?  Because MS has set 720p as the design spec on the 360.  When you play the game at the lower resolution you're not using a big chunk of the 360's power and they aren't adding in extras for 480i/p folks as far as I know.  Same game at lower resolution equals less power used.  Less memory is needed.  You don't need as fast a cpu nor gpu.

Anyway it seems to me you're really only saying this because it ain't hi-def.  And sure it's an upgraded Gamecube if you consider upgraded a faster cpu, gpu, more ram, usb ports, flash memory support, wi-fi, larger optical media support....

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Less power an advantage for Revolution?
« on: November 08, 2005, 01:13:40 PM »
I don't think it's an advantage except that it will then be priced lower.   I would say on a  regular TV (or at 480p) tho the Revolution could possibly end up more powerful than their competition because it doesn't take nearly as much power to render a game at 480p than at 720p.  Surely it will be on fairly equal ground here.  And thus it would easily be able to handle ports.

It's just a matter of selling well enough to attract the 3rd parties or going the extra mile with a few 3rd parties at the start to help sell even more consoles and thus attract even more 3rd parties.

I don't think you should compare the systems directly anymore.  IT's obvious Nintendo is going their own route.  It's really basically what they did with the DS.  A lower priced entry with unique functionality.

You just pointed out exactly what's wrong with sword swinging controls.  The current system with the lock on is incredibly easy to use.  With two buttons and the analog stick I can dodge, parry, horizontal strike and vertical strike with ease.  It works incredibly well and that's why sword swinging would be a problem.  Swinging a sword is much more complex.  Suddenly to beat that Iron Knuckle I need some real fencing skills.  Skills I don't have nor should be expected to have for a Zelda game.  Sure it could be simplified to basic movements (up does a vertical strike, etc) but if you're going to do that you might as well use the existing system which has the advantage in that it doesn't cause fatigue from moving a remote the whole time.  The whole point of using the remote with motion control to control a sword is for it to control accurately and pay attention to subtle movements so it feels like you're really fighting.  Without that level of control using the remote would be a g!mmick (I love how we censor any word that might cause *gasp* actual discussion).  That level of control and complexity goes against Zelda's design which traditionally has allowed for complex actions to be executed with simple commands.  Sword swinging is for something like Bushido Blade where the potential flexibility of the remote can be used to full effect without comprimising the game's design or using the remote as a g!mmick replacement for a d-pad.

Are you like Mr. Burns in the Simpsons and think you'll have trouble lifting a little remote and doing a few slashes?  Is your nickname Mr.  Glass?  When the sun is out without a cloud in the sky and it's 78 degrees do you find a way to not enjoy it?

HOnestly, .....

Do you really believe what you post?  lol. Cause that is some 100% genuine b.s.

Well this game is so short that your time will allow it.

IT is a great game, but I beat it in a few hours.  So it's a bit short.  Altho it does unlock an expert mode that has the ball moving faster and the bad guys apparently shooting at you a bit more.  And of course it's the type of game in which you'll want to pull out of the closet every few weeks when you have 15 minutes to play and you want to beat your high scores.  If you have a bud with a DS it could be great fun.

I think cube owners should be thankful this one ain't coming out on the Cube.

It's been in development for so long.  Plus it doesn't sound like it will be ready till next summer or something.  By that time we'll all be into the next Zelda and looking forward to the Revolution.

Oh yeah.  Wal-mart actually has a slick Gamecube demo setup.  10-20 new Nintendo games to select from plus some DS game demos/movies.  NOthing terribly fancy.  But easy to access and lots of new games in there.

Actually I don't want the pink stylus.  I just got it because it was free.  I wouldn't be caught dead with it.  lol.  It is nice to have an extra one tho.  I can always spray paint it.

Yeah I sold Kirby CC.  Maybe UncleBob bought it.  Good game, but I don't keep many around after I finish 'em.  Otherwise I wouldn't get half the game I do.

Anyway still don't understand the bitchin about this product.  For most folks the router makes alot more sense.  And are just as easy to setup.

Also I think you don't need this specific Nintendo product to make your DS work with your pc.

Because the net is setup so as to block routers. If you need one they turn it on for a certain whatever. Trust me, I already tried it last year.

Many wireless routers are also wired routers.  Sounds like your problem was something else.  Either too many were sharing your router and they go pissed or you didn't ask them to open ports.

The reason for no wireless maybe is they don't want outsiders piggybacking on their network.     They'd have to trust dormers to secure it.  And they'd rather not do that.

YOu know do you need hi-speed internet to use that thing?  I think it could work with dial-up.

Also it will be a pain to bring to a friend's house because you need to install software on your friend's pc.

A wireless router is probably going to be about as easy to setup as the USB thingie.  They are getting pretty-idiot proof nowadays.

Well I'm not sure how you can block a wireless router in a dorm room  I think you mean router in general.

Anyway you can get a USB thing online.  I'm not sure why people feel the need to biatch.    Be glad you can get one.

tho I wonder if you would still have trouble with the USB thingie.

The real bitching gripe here is that you can't go to any wi-fi spot and use the DS.  What's up with that?

I have to ask this question.

Why buy the Nintendo USB wireless dealio when wireless routers are routinely $20 or less after rebate at all these electronics stores?????????

I don't understand it.  The USB wireless dealio is surely going to be at least $20.  PLus it takes up a usb slot.

And you'll have to have your pc on everytime you wanted to play a DS game on the net.

Make it easy on yourself and just buy a wireless router.

Tho I guess some of just have 56k or something.  But if you have 56k you probably live in the boonies and aren't near a store anyway.

Also it's not you're not on the internet anyway if you want the USB dongle.
