As I read on PGC's front page, it's entirely possible to adjust sensitivity in software.  The Metroid Prime demo had such an adjustment which was user selectable.

I'm buying the Wii version no matter what.  I mean the whole bow and arrow thing where you'll hear your bowstring tighten as you pull the wiimote back is something I won't miss.

I really think a big part of the controls is a learning curve issue.  Even Miyamoto said it's probably harder for those weaned on current game controllers to get used to the wiimote.   Again my first attempts at using a mouse for fps games drove me back to keyboard-only because I was worse with the mouse.  Ultimately, of course, the mouse was superior.

Another analogy is Tiger Woods.  Every couple of years he revamps his swing in order to get better.  AT first this results in him getting worse tho.  He takes a step backwards while making the adjustments.  Only later does the payoff happen and he takes a couple steps forward.

The only issue I really see is the switching between weapons with the d-pad.  That doesn't seem like it can be improved without ditching that scheme completely.  The only good news about that is I don't think you'll need to rapidly switch between weapons like you would in an action game.

I wouldn't worry too much.  They've got 6 months to iron out the controls.  Believe me they'll be heavily worked over between now and then. Hell they'll probably let you point and click on the weapon icons to switch between them.  I also imagine alot of it is you in that you're new to the wiimote and used to a regular controller.  I used to play pc fps games with keyboard only.  I had a hard time switching to the mouse at first even tho it was superior.  I was all over the place with it.  It tooks weeks before I finally stuck with the mouse.  It just takes awhile to fine tune new fine motor skills.  Zelda is more  a 'hard-core' game too and so I don't think that audience will be as fickle as you make them out to be.

Also I wouldn't doubt the wiimote itself is fine-turned between now and November.

Last of course is Nintendo's track record.  They always make some pretty fine AAA games.  And Zelda being one of the major launch titles for Wii I have faith they'll make it happen.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Question regarding Zelda: TP for Wii

No TP for my Wii!  Sorry just had to say that.

Since they are releasing two skus I would guess the Wii version will have an enhanced loook.  I don't expect much tho.

Killer news.  So are you actually aiming where you shoot or it sounds like you're actually using it as more like a mouse.

From what I've read it's possible for the controller be used in both ways.  What's the take on that?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Red Steel Topic, new details added!

Yeah now I'm not sure on this one.  But it's 6 months away and I doubt the game has been in development much more than 6 months.

It sounds like they made the game using a regular controller and tried to map that functionality over to the pointer.  Good news is I believe it's not a problem with the wiimote itself.  Folks seem to like MP3 controls.  Also IGN reviewed the   obstacle course demoand said the pointer worked to near perfection.  So it's all up to Ubi.

They'll get it going.  I'm sure they'll up the graphics too.  I just hope they don't release it if it isn't in tip top shape by launch.  Better to delay a couple months then to launch a rush job.

I'm definitely getting all the big AAA NIntendo franchises.  Zelda, Mario, Samus and SSB for sure.  Only two of those are available at launch tho.  The other NIntendo properties depend on price.  Excite Truck I want to get, but if it's $50 and doesn't have many courses then I'm not sure.  I'll wait for a price drop.  Same with WiiSports.  It depends on price vs what's included on whether I pick it up right away.

Also plan on getting Red Steel and Madden.  If you want 3rd party titles you better support 'em too.  I'm sure there's other titles I might pick up down the road too.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Third parties having trouble?
« on: May 11, 2006, 05:30:38 AM »
I read PGC's impressions of Red Steel and that title is back on my launch list.  I also read Gamespot's impressions of it and that helped too.

I think some folks just aren't going to like it and some are anti-Nintendo like that guy reporting on Wii on the Joystiq site.

PGC has a great piece on Red Steel.  I think it all just takes a bit of getting used to the controls.  I use mouse on the pc, but when I first used it for fps games I sucked big time.  I was worse than when I used keyboard only.  But weeks later and I was better.  So while the controller make be fairly intuitive that doesn't mean you're an expert with it on day one.

So while I imagine Nintendo has had the most time with the controls and probably has the better more expertise in gaming development in general I think most criticism is because it's their first time using it.  I think even more so with hardcore gamers because they have to unlearn certain things.

That's true  to some extent, but as Miyamoto said the US doesn't have half the non-gamers titles yet that Japan has.  It's taking awhile to localize them for this market.  Nintendo also said Brain Age has sold 100,000 copies in 3 weeks which is a faster rate than in Japan.  Last the DS Lite has proved even more popular in Japan and some of that should translate over here.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: My thoughts on Wii
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:17:43 PM »
eh the tennis game is what it is.  It's a fun little collection of simple sports games.  It's a sports party game to show off the controller.  It wouldn't take 'em long to put a few more details in there either.  You wonder why companies like Sony and MS don't show alot of gameplay footage?  This is why.  'cause the kids all whine and complain at works in progress.

The beauty of Wii and Nintendo is the variety.  You got stuff like Red Steel.  And Metroid Prime.  To an adventure game like Zelda to the joyful fantastical worlds of Super Mario to fun party games like Wii Sports and WarioWAre.  Variety!!!!

Look at the PS3 and 360 trailers.  All rubble-strewn, bloodied, bullet ridden, war zones of games.  90% of them are like that and are dark and badass 15 yr old material.  Hey I don't mind a game like that now and then.  But every game?

Also I tell you Rockstar Table tennis has totally realistic graphics and I'm more interested in Wii Sports.  Wii Sports just looks more fun.

That gun looks sweet.  YOu could play an fps with it because of the analog stick.  I'm sure it has the two buttons from the nunchuk too.  It wouldn't have dual gryos tho.

The gun is probably an optional dealio as it doesn't give you anything the wiimote and nunchuk wouldn't have in terms of functionality.  But it would be fun to own.l

Yeah where's the first one?

Well if someone walks in front of your TV while you're playing your Gamecube then  your game is interrupted as it is.  :P

Also the 30 degrees of pointing sensitivity means nothing more than you'll have a hard time playing while standing 1 foot in front of your TV.  ie the closer you are to the TV the greater the angle (from your pointer or remote) to either edge of the TV screen will be.  ie it will exceed 30 degrees.   That's all.  Nothing to see here.  Move on.

IF this 30 degree number is true and you want to get an idea of how far you have to be far your TV to play then here's the calculation.

Measure width of TV.   Tan 30 degrees ( or ~.577) = Width TV/2/X  with X equaling distance you must be from the TV.

For the 23" standard TV in my office I would have to be at least 16.9 inches away from the TV.

If you have a 50" widescreen TV you have to stand at least a shade over 3 ft away from the TV.

edit:  The above is done with the assumption that 30 degrees means in either direction of center.  IF it's total then the numbers are doubled and then some.

Solid pre-conference.  I think Nintendo is holding things close to the vest.  AFter all Wii is still 6 months away.

Yeah all you need is a sort of sleep mode for the remote just like the Wii will have.  A cellphone can be left on for days without charging it and  I imagine the remote would use alot less power so it's definitely doable imo.  It's a guess of course, but I swear the ingredients for this are all there.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: NEW hardware news! (Wii has LAN adaptor)

It just depends on the games.  Some games don't require all the much bandwidth actually.

But of course it's not an ideal connection meaning you're likely to run into problems.  I was just pointing out that I'm sure it can be done and like you said you can probably connect to the VC and maybe even play a simple online game.
