Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime in Progressive Scan.....wow!

I don't understand why those HDTV monitors are 4:3 ratio?  Shouldn't they have 16:9 widescreens?   Well, whatever.  The $700 pricetag is too rich for my blood.  My standard 27" TV was only $200, so I'll wait 1-2 years until these "special" HDTVs come down in price.

If you don't have S-Video cable, it's worth getting.  You can see the difference even on a standard TV.

As you can see in my revised post, PS2 and GameCube actually have more ultra-high-quality (>90% rating) than X-box does!  Looks like I picked the right systems.

When I originally posted this message to planetgamecube.com and n-philes.com, it was immediately deleted.  Now we know how Nintendo-ites deal with negative news... they censor it.  At least psxnation.com is open enough to allow free speech.  Anyway, I'm going to try again in the hope that the Nintendo moderators will be more open-minded to free speech.  I'm not holding my breath though.

In another forum someone wrote:

I was curious if that last sentence about reviews was true, so I went searching the net, pulled out the calculator, and here's what I found:

XBX = 82.5%
PS2 = 80.5%
GCN = 79.1%

If you look at the sizes of games, you'll notice that each new generation picks up where the last left off:
Atari 2600 - 2K to 32K
Original Nintendo - 32K to 512K
Super Nintendo - 512K to 4 megabytes
Nintendo64 - 4 megabytes to 64 megabytes

In each generation, the smallest game was equal to the largest game of the previous generation.  If we assume that trend continues, we can make an educated guess that the PS2's smallest game will equal the PS1's largest game... 4 CDs or ~2400 megabytes.

By year 2, PS2 games would hit 4800 megabytes (like FF10).  This is year 3 of the PS2, and already the 8500 megabyte DVD has been maxed out by Xenosaga.  Would anyone be surprised to see a 17,000 megabyte/dual DVD game in Year 4?  Not me.  There's a definite demand for Blu-Rays or similar ultra-large discs.

Where did that come from?  I don't see anyone in this topic saying they prefer cutscenes instead of FMVs?

According to people playing the game, Xenosaga is just like an anime movie... except that you are IN the movie instead of just watching it.  Sounds cool to me.

7 1/2 hours of movies/cutscenes is how much I heard is included in the game.  Spread over 60 hours that's really not alot.  It still leaves ~52 hours of game.  Add in sidequests, and the game will surpass 100.

ASIDE: I don't know why people complain about cut-scenes so much?  Super Nintendo RPGs had plenty of cutscenes in them.  Like that hour-long opera sequence in Final Fantasy 3  (FF6 in Japan).  Long, involved stories are nothing new.

 Computers released around 1980 used audio cassettes for storing games.  My own computer, the Commodore=64 had games available for both disk and tape.  The flaw with tapes are (1) Not randomly accessible (2) sloooooow.  Data on disc can be read randomly (center/edge/middle... it doesn't matter) and much, much faster.

Stand-alone players are pointless right now. There's no pre-recorded content yet.
When CDs were introduced, players came first.  Recordable CDs didn't arrive until ~10 years later.  Ditto DVDs: Players in 1995/recorders ~2000.  So it's natural to think Blu-Rays would be players first/recorders second... following the same pattern.

Nintendo's Wind Waker is not the first cel-shaded game.  Sega's(?) Jet Set Radio was.  So, Sega was the first to take that risk.  Nintendo is just copying.

Honestly, as cubedcanuck said, Nintendo is not taking any more risks than any other gaming company.

And yes, I think this topic should be closed.  Or moved.  Just as you deleted the message from the innocent Newbie who asked if he should buy a GameCube.  It doesn't make sense to enforce the rules for some people, deleting their messages, and allow other people to break the rules.  Everyone should be treated equally.

Sony has a 50-50 record.  They flopped with Beta & Mini-disc.  But they suceeded with CDs and DVDs.  I'm betting this Blu-Ray technology will be adopted by the DVD Consortium.

I don't think it was hype that killed Dreamcast.  Lack-of-sufficient advancement is what did it.

If I imagine myself in the year 1998 with a PS1 or N64, would the Dreamcast induce me to upgrade?  No.  Because the graphics are "N64-style but smoothed with more polygons."  I would not be able to justify to myself spending $400 plus a whole new game collection for such a small advancement in graphics.  I'd stick with what I already have.

I DOUBT we'll see these discs in the new 2005 consoles.  They'll be too expensive.  We'll see Blu-Rays in computers first, and then by ~2010 in game consoles.

I see the new Blu-Rays have cases.  That sucks, because they'll be big, bulky and take up lots of space.  Right now I can store 200 game DVDs (minus case) in a large notebook.  I won't be able to do that with the Blu-Rays.

Even with all that space (23 gigabytes), the new Blu-Rays still hold only *2* hours of HDTV!

Comic about GameCube's lack of software

I hear a LOT of hype about DreamCast froms gamers, but when I borrowed a system from a friend of mine, I was totally unimpressed.  The graphics on that system were not as impressive as what I see on a PS2.  They felt like N64-graphics but smoothed with more polygons.  That's it... nothing outstanding or special.

This is cool.  The Japanese get the Beta version, and we Americans get the final bug-free/totally-polished version.

The same thing happened with Kingdom Hearts (Americans got an enhanced version of the game).

I recall a similar thing happening in 1983... companies like Atari used lots of hype to sell games, but when people got home they discovered the game was crap.

In 1984 the people responded to the crap by stopping buying games, and causing a videogame crash.

If in 2003 crap games like DOA: XXX Volleyball are using hype to sell themselves, eventually the customer will get discouraged with the lack of fun, lose interest in games, and then maybe in 2004,we'll have another videogame crash.  And then hopefully the crap will disappear... well we can only hope.

Did you actually read any of the posts here? Nobody is mad because it got a 9.5. tThey are mad because GTA:VC, the POS addon for the worlds worst game, got perfect 10s.
"Get a life" is the comment that immedicately springs to mind.  I mean, c'mon, do you really think a 9.5 is going to affect Zelda sales?!?!?  Will it affect your enjoyment of the game?!?!?  Jeez, I wish my life was so simplistic that all I had to worry about was a lousy -0.5 less than GTA: Vice City.  But no, I'm an adult.  I have more important things to worry about.  Like paying my ~$1000 a month in bills, finding another job after getting laid off, and then kissing the bosses' butt so I can hang onto that job so I don't have to go on welfare.

And you're all high-blood-pressure boy because Zelda got a cumulative score of 29.5 instead of 30?   "Get a life."  Go play Zelda's Master Quest.  This -0.5 less than Vice City is trivial BS.

Anyone who's actually played a PS2 knows that's not true.  Games like Final Fantasy 10, Kingdom Hearts, and Xenosaga look lightyears beyond N64's Ocarina.  For one thing, the characters in the aforementioned games actually look like people, not walking polygons.  Second, in the distance you can see a true background, not just Ocarina-style fog/pop-up.  And finally, the PS2 games listed above can do sweeping vistas without slowdown... something I've heard many people complain N64's Ocarina can not do.

So... please stop the PS2 bashing.  It's fanboyism, and highly untruthful.
