Nintendo Gaming / I don't like metroid prime. Heres why:
« on: March 17, 2003, 06:09:55 AM »
Metroid doesn't work in 3D.  In the Original Metroid and Super Metroid, you can take in the entire room in a glance.  That meant you could run almost non-stop from room-to-room-to-room without fear of dying.  It made these games *exciting* because of the almost non-stop pace.

Not so in Metroid 3D (Prime).  You have to walk into a room and then stop and look around.  And then look around some more.  And then again just to make sure you didn't miss anything.  That pace is waaaaay too slow.

Metroid on GameCube should have followed the same side-view as Castlevania: SOTN and Super Metroid.  They should have kept the same style of game, just with hi-res, multi-million color graphics.  In my opinion, it would have made a better game.

Nintendo Gaming / Would "GC2" be backwards compatible with the GC?

In 1985, Atari released the 7800 ProSystem which was backwards-compatible with the 2600's ~1000 title library... and that was cart-based.  Ditto the Gameboy Advance.  So it IS possible for cart systems to be backwards-compatible as long as they share the same connector.

And 1/4 the size of my computer's hard drive (80GB).

I design multi-layer boards (upto 12 so far) which allow different circuits to lay on top of one another (separated by ground or power planes to prevent cross-talk).  I wonder why they can't do the same with silicon chips?

Do you have percentages?  You know, how many broken / how many sold?  What matters is the failure rate, not the actual number.

Also, where do you work?

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube Discs

Since GameCube discs spin backwards, they are probably unreadable on a normal DVD player.

Trivia: Many CD games included playable music.  Just pop them into your CD player and listen to the tunes.

TARGET's giving away free Memory Card 251s... with purchase of Metroid Prime and a couple other select games.

I just picked up mine: $150 for a GameCube (#2), Metroid, and the save card.  What a great deal!  So breaking down, that's basically:
$20 Memory Card 251
$50 Metroid Prime
$80 GameCube

COOL!  :-)

Nintendo Gaming / Console Reliability (~82% for all of them)

I admit that my numbers are a small sample size.  IF you have better numbers, please provide them from a reliable source like Consumer Reports.  Or do a nation-wide poll.

If you do not, then we have to use my poll as the best available *at this time*.

That's a good point about silicon chips and disc storage reaching the theoretical smallest size possible.  It's similar to how cars originally got 1 mile per gallon and now can get ~70 miles per gallon (diesel-electric hybrids)... but that's it.  No more efficiency can be squeezed out of the internal combustion engine.  We are coming to the same point in computers where no more performance can be squeezed out.  But I don't expect to reach that point until ~2020.

And for FMVs, if the game producer wants photo-realistic graphics similar to Shrek, he won't be able to use 2005-released consoles.  They won't have that kind of power.  The producer will have to use FMVs for ultra-realistic Shrek-quality movies.

There are 5 times as many PS2s on the market, so naturally there will be 5 times as many returns when the console fails.  That gives the false impression that PS2 fails a lot, when in reality the failure rate *percentage* is almost exactly the same.

Plus, Sony has a very good record in the appliance industry with Consumer Reports routinely listing Sony at the top for long-term reliabilty.  Ditto consumeraffairs.org.  (I still have a working Sony Walkman from the 1980s!)  There's no reason to think Sony would suddenly forget how to build quality equipment when designing the PS2.

GUYS:

Thank you for your calm, rational replies.   I can't tell you how much that means to me.  After getting verbally abused by the immature children at n-philes.com (below), it's nice to meet some mature, reasonable people who can debate a topic without resorting to insults/slander.

I took polls on various websites to discover how reliable today's game consoles are.  Here are the results (rounded to the nearest integer):

Gamers Who Still Own Their Original Console:
GCN 84%
XBX 82%
PS2 81%

Guys, Sean's right on this one.  A cutscene is typically defined as a non-interactive interruption of gameplay that advances the story.  A cutscene can be anything from still images with text a la the NES Ninja Gaiden games to full-blown video sequences that are typically used in today's games, whether they are rendered by the in-game engine (as seen in Zelda or Metroid Prime) or they are pre-rendered FMV clips like in Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, etc.  I hope that clarifies things a bit.
Okay.

Well, I *thought* Xenosaga used cartoon-style movies, rather than console-generated polygon scenes.  Those movies are what takes up the 8.5 gig disc space.

FF10 used mainly console-generated scenes, but in pivotal moments (like Sin attacking) they used pre-rendered CGI movies.  The movies were a LOT better than the console-generated scenes, because the characters looked more alive, the music was dramatic, and the action was much, much faster-paced.  I can't imagine FF10 without the pre-rendedered CGI movies.

Kingdom Hearts used a pre-rendered movie for the intro and the exit.  That's it.  The rest was console-generated polygon scenes.  These scenes were okay, but severely limited in scope.  I would have preferred Square throw in some pre-rendered movies.

Because the size of programs (and games) has always grown:
Atari 2600 - 2K to 32K maximum size
Original Nintendo - 512K
Super Nintendo - 4000K
Nintendo64 - 64,000K
GameCube - 3,000,000K
-----------------------------------------------
There's no reason to think that 25-year history of constantly growing software will suddenly stop.  Even if future technology eliminates the need for FMVs, they'll still need textures.  And not normal textures, but HDTV textures which require 4 times as much storage space.

You know what annoys me most about game music?  It's not the midi, or the orchestra, or the lack there-of.  It's the constant repeating over and over and over.  Like Kingdom Hearts.  It sounds beautiful, but it repeats itself every 2 minutes.  After 5 hours of hearing the same song over-and-over-and-over I'm ready to smash the speakers.

What musicians need to do is make the music *longer*... like classical music pieces which last ~30 minutes.  That way it wouldn't be so damn repetitive!

Ha!  Sounds like Bill Gates (or whoever said it): "No one will ever need more than 640 kilobytes in a computer."

I'm going to bookmark this sentence, and then bring it back up in 2005 when the new PS3/X-box2/GameCube2 consoles are released.  I bet games on those systems will easily exceed 20 gigabytes.

Nintendo Gaming / How does the Gameboy Player work?
« on: March 10, 2003, 06:06:09 AM »
I figure there's three possibilities:
(1) It's a software emulator that makes your GameCube think it's a Gameboy.
(2) It's the actual Gameboy hardware, but replaces the LCD with the BameCube's display.
(3) Totally different hardware.

Which one is the correct answer?

You got it backwards.  Cutscenes are console-generated graphics.  FMVs are pre-rendered or live-action movies.  Kingdom Hearts was 100% cutscenes with no FMVs except the intro and exit movies.

I REPEAT:
If you take the reviews of several dozen professional reviewers and average them together, you get a consensus view of how good or bad that game is. That's what gametab.com and gamerankings.com do.

All I and nolimit did was list all the games with *average* scores over 90%, and then we counted them. The result shows that PS2 has the most games rated over 90%, GameCube has the second most, and X-box has the least.

TV producers for Babylon5 (J.Michael Straczynski) and Farscape read and answer questions on the net.  So too do many novelists like Peter David.  I even spoke to Majel Roddenberry (Star Trek) online.  So, why is it so difficult to believe a programmer would come online and speak to people?

Keep in mind that the larger games of the current time are generally laden with FMV.....
Yes, I knew someone would say that, but I don't see what relevance it has.  Whether a game is 8.5 gigabytes of FMV or 8.5 gigabytes of program, the game still uses and requires all of that storage space.  Nothing's changed.

As for your prognostication that someday FMVs won't be necessary, I agree.  But I don't expect that to happen until the distant future (2010), and so don't consider it relevant to the *current* present situation: DVDs are full... HDTV-quality video requires ~4 times as much storage space as standard video... therefore some new storage media needs to be used.  Blu-Ray has the potential to be that new media.

I fully expect we'll see a dual-layer, dual DVD game (17 gigabytes) before the end of the PS2's life.  Maybe Final Fantasy 12 or Xenosaga 2.  Blu-Rays would be ideal for such games.

HA!

Yeah right.  Xenosaga: The Will to Build is 8.5 gigabytes in size.  How on earth would you fit that onto a GameCube?  Even if you use DivX and squash the movies by 50%, you'd still need ~4.5 gigabytes of storage space.  No way would that fit on a single GC disc.  You'd need at least 3 discs to fit all of it.

General Gaming / XBX > PS2 > GCN in gaming reviews.
« on: March 08, 2003, 01:58:32 PM »
Some not-so-bright persons were confused by message #1, so let me break it down for them:

Average Scores for ALL games across ~15 review sites:
XBX = 82.5%
PS2 = 80.5%
GCN = 79.1%

Number of games rated higher than 80%
XBX = 17
PS2 = 23
GCN = 16

Number of games rated higher than 90%
XBX =  2
PS2 =  5
GCN = 4

Clear?

Now My Opinion: I think number of high-quality games are more important than percentage of the library.   Given the choice between 17 X-box games or 23 PS2 games rated >80%, which would you choose?  I'd choose the latter, because more games is better.
