TalkBack / RE: DS Lite Details
« on: February 09, 2006, 01:12:49 PM »
Looking at the pics, I really don't like how the top half of the unit is raised around the edges, making it concave, presumably to seal it around the edges when it's closed. That sort of thing makes it bothersome to easily open and close the unit. The rounded edges of the GBA SP are much nicer.

They took one of the problems of the DS's design (being flat around the edges), and made it even worse. While quite obviously looking at a GBA SP's design, which had the solution.

Nintendo probably thought they needed to do this because they didn't recess the D-pad and buttons (which is a great thing, IMO), but if you just made two recessed circles where the buttons meet the top half, then you're fine. As-is, all they did is just recess the entire top half of the unit, which left them unable to round the corners.

No wonder Reggie says it's Japan-exclusive for now. Nintendo of America isn't in a position where they can overcharge people with the DS right now.

The DS Lite is the weight of 1.5 GBA SP's, instead of 2 GBA SP's. That's much nicer, especially considering that weight was a problem with the original DS.

But the reason Nintendo is calling it a DS "Lite" is because the screens are supposedly brighter and have more settings. That's the part Nintendo wants you to look at. Those are the reason Nintendo's going to be charging more for it. You can charge more for better screens. And maybe for upgraded firmware enabling online Pictochat. You can't charge more because they saved $0.05 on the outer casing.

The Rev won't need audio. It'll have a tinny GB Micro-style speaker in the Revmote.

And the positioning bars are supposed to be wireless, otherwise you'd be limited in figuring out where to put them.

    Rev parts

    Revmote shapes

    Unrelated but very cool DVD

Yep. And it can now be confirmed that everyone with a GameCube Component Cable will be fine, but everyone else will be screwed by the Revolution.

There's a dating sim called "Girlfriend of Steel" which seems quite popular. Supposed to have a lot of unusual situations.

And there was an actual "Evangelion meets Gunbuster" strip mahjong game that apparently wasn't afraid to include the male characters.

Perhaps they demonstrated to Miyazaki that Lost Magic isn't just mindless shooing and killing?

True. But then again, the same was apparently true of Jade Cocoon. And it bombed (by most accounts for trying to be too creative, and for not being about shooting and killing), which he probably took as an affirmation of his ideas.

But then again, Gainax's biggest and most popular game, Princess Maker, isn't about mindless shooting and killing either. It's about playing with lolis. Which is what most of Miyazaki's films are really all about.

Still, they do bring up one good point: they're offering new games from indy developers and Nintendo might not be.

Nintendo has reportedly been telling developers that they can't make "new old games". If they want to make something original, but low-tech, then they should just make it for the Rev/Cube/DS/GBA (whichever one they'd like).

Interesting. But I thought Hayao Miyazaki hated videogames?

Back around the time when he was starting Studio Ghibli, Gainax became really popular, due in no small part to their idea to bring their amazing artistic talent into videogaming. But Miyazaki didn't want to do go that route, because he thought videogames rotted kids minds worse than TV or movies, because "they were nothing but mindless shooting and killing." And then every time someone would come along and suggest "Hey, I've got an idea for how you can get ahead. Make some videogames, like Gainax does," his resentment of videogames would only increase, because he knew he was passing up easy money.

Then one day, one of his top assistants did the artwork for the PSX game "Jade Cocoon" as a side job, and since his drawing style was pretty much the same as Miyazaki's work, a large number of excited reporters in Japan mistakenly wrote that it was being made by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki "pulled a Yamauchi" and went nuts. He broke off all relations with his former friend, went on some public rants against videogames, and (IIRC) said that neither he nor Studio Ghibli would ever be involved with a videogame.

Edit: Looking into it, the "assistant" guy is Katsuya Kondô, and Jade Cocoon came out shortly after 1997's "Princess Mononoke", at which point he seems to have entirely missed being involved in "Spirited Away", but then he returned for 2004's "Howl's Moving Castle". So I guess Miyazaki eventually forgave him.

Resident Evil Deadly Silence is a 3D game, was it difficult to make a 3D game for Nintendo DS ?

Well, the Nintendo DS is probably not suited for 3D, I think that Nintendo DS is carrying over the Game Boy Advance technology by adding some 3D support, the number of polygons that you can push on Nintendo DS is around a thousand, if you add textures it’s 800 polygons, so it’s not a lot. But still as you have seen there are a lot of 3D games that are coming on Nintendo DS, it’s going basically to come down to what we can do with that power that is given. First we had a lot of problems trying to make this game for the Nintendo DS, but after we learnt to program it the right way, we were able to do it, it’s all possible.

    Quote

Why did you make the players look like pink colored stars in the multiplayer modes ?

[Laughs] As I mentioned before, we were actually limited by the hardware power, we needed between 200 and 300 polygons for each character, it makes almost 1200 polygons for four characters, and we couldn’t get more then 800 polygons with textures on Nintendo DS. So we were stuck having to use something as a symbol rather then having actually real character. I’m not saying that the Nintendo DS is weak or underpowered, the system is more focused on the gameplay experience, we enjoyed developing on this hardware.

X3 was a rush job, because Capcom wanted to get it out before the SNES died.

The version of X3 that's in MMXC is the PlayStation/Saturn port. It has added FMV cutscenes, and the music was remixed for it. Most people seem to say that the remixed music in X3 is worse than the original SNES version.

BTW, I disagree with both you and Jonny, in that I think X4 was really good. Particularly if you play as Zero.

It's not a dating sim like it looks like...it's a text adventure, more like...

That's what you get when someone who can't do romance (aka: anyone in the western videogame industry) tries to make a dating sim.

The other reason why you shouldn't be playing Sprung is because it's (for all intents and purposes) impossible to get past first base (kissing) on a Nintendo console. The DS promised to take us to second base (touching), but that was a cruel lie. Now the Rev's promising to take us to third base? Hah! Not a chance.

I'm willing to buy Sprung (and I did buy it), but I'm not willing to enjoy it. I must bitch and whine about it's wasted potential until Nintendo changes their attitude.

By the measurements, it appears to be slightly smaller than a GBA SP, plus the extra width, of course.

I'm very glad that they moved the D-pad and buttons up higher, because their placement on the DS made it absurdly top-heavy. The reduced weight is also a big deal.

I personally think they still could've done more to make it comfortable (this probably still has the pathetic little D-pad and buttons Nintendo seems to have gotten used to), but it looks like a very good balance of comfort and appearance (the old DS had neither, IMO). And the fact that it looks like a GBA SP is a great move.

The MSRP seems a little high, and NOA in particular should be looking for a price drop, because while this redesign is very nice, I don't see it holding Sony at bay for very long, especially not if Sony has any surprises of their own in the works.

Edit: I wonder how the L&R triggers are? Hopefully they don't "pull an SP" in that regard. It seems unlikely. And where's the power button? Don't tell me they "pulled a Micro" and put it on the lower edge of the unit? And while I'm complaining, I hope they ditched the "slider" volume control and moved back to a dial.

I don't think "less than $300" is a $299 price announcement. I mean, the question was "less than $700?" This is just a way of safely narrowing it down without talking about what Nintendo doesn't want to talk about yet.

BTW, as for the N64 price, the PlayStation launched in Japan at 40,000 yen ($400). When it launched in America (Sept 95), it dropped to $300 (30,000 yen). Two months later, Nintendo unveiled the N64 at Shoshinkai and said it would be 25,000 yen/$250. Six months later at E3, Sony undercut everybody by dropping a full $100 down to $200, sending Sega panicking into a similar pricecut, and making Nintendo laugh arrogantly, saying everyone else needed to be $50 cheaper in order to compete with the N64.

The N64 launched in Japan one month later (June) at 25,000 yen, but it fizzled after it's weak two-game launch (despite one of those games being Mario64), prompting NOA to push for a price drop down to $200, which was approved mere days before the American N64 launch.

Japanese sales numbers mean nothing to anyone here...the PSP was out for 3 months of the year less than the DS and still managed to sell over a million more.

Nintendo had a million-unit launch in America that technically happened in 2004, and then it fizzled.

Sony had a (forced) million-unit launch in America that came during the DS's down time, and then it fizzled.

Then they both picked up again (the DS picked up when good games came out, leading into Christmas, while the PSP got a bigger boost just from Christmas by itself) and they each sold another 2.5 million units.
