Fire Emblem supposedly sold 75,748 in November (it's launch month) and 111,728 in December.

Please don't call it Nitro. God that name is lame.

I think Nintendo should call it the "Nitwo". It makes perfect sense. Nintendo + Two screens. Like how "Pokemon" = Pocket + Monsters

Pronounced like "night-woah". All the kids would wuv it.

General Gaming / RE: Xbox Year over Year Growth?

year to year growth simply refers to increased sales fron the previous fiscal year.

I dunno about that. Using the Feb 03 figures I mentioned...

PS2: 484,000 - 29% = 343,640
XBOX: 197,000 + 2% = 200,940
GCN: 164,000 - 18% = 134,480

The results look pretty close to the Feb 04 numbers. And NPD does "readjust" older figures as they go along, apparently.

If we're thinking an "entire (fiscal) year" thing, it would probably still have to be February (American fiscal year maybe, I don't know) as Microsoft specifically pointed February out. I don't know about Feb 2002, but in 03 the installed base was:
PS2: 16,802,000
XBOX: 4,962,000
GCN: 3,828,000
GBA: 12,441,000

...and in Feb 04 it was:
PS2: 22,958,000
Xbox: 8,187,000
GCN: 7,133,000
GBA: 20,601,000

That means the total increase from Feb 03 to Feb 04 was (quick subtraction):
PS2: 6,156,000
Xbox: 3,225,000
GCN: 3,305,000
GBA: 8,160,000

So the GameCube beat the XBox in America, from Feb-to-Feb. It's hard to believe that counts as a "20% weaker spanking" than the GameCube gave the XBox during this period last year.

Of course, both consoles did launch in Nov 2001. Perhaps Microsoft's trying to juggle some numbers around that. (Like, the XBox launched earlier, was probably more successful, so they hide those positive numbers in a little Jan-to-Feb window, and pretend they've had a "come from behind victory!" since day one.)

Edit: Make that a "Nov-to-Jan window". Not sure what I was thinking there...

From the NPD numbers that we've heard (and collected in the GameCube board's NPD thread)...

- February 2003 -
PS2: 484,000 (+8% over January sales)
XBOX: 197,000 (+20%)
GCN: 164,000 (+103%)
GBA: 282,000 (+6%)

- February 2004 -
PS2: 363,000 [+7% over January sales]
Xbox: 204,000 [+6%]
GCN: 137,000 [+5%]
GBA: 353,000 [+18%]

So yeah, the XBox is the only console to currently have a February that was better than their last one (assuming we don't count the GBA, which did even better in that regard than the XBox).

Of course, last year the GameCube seems to have had a "spike" in February, and this year Nintendo still seems to be recovering from a mid-December hardware-sellout issue.

Some new end-of-fiscal-year numbers from Nintendo out today.

Nothing about hardware or sales, just profits, but it seemed worth mentioning.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/04/01/news_6092686.html

Apparently they ended the year (which was filled with doom-and-gloom "first loss in history" hysteria for the first half) with 33 billion yen (US$317 million) profit on the year.

Last year they earned 68 billion yen (US$654 million).

Of course, last year PGC said they earned "¥67.3 billion ($572 million)", which should tell you something about exchange rates, and how it is that they're hurting Nintendo, by impacting the "giant money pile" they've been building up since the NES days.

I'll probably add a link about it to that second post in the thread, after PGC makes their story on it, for better consistency.

Basically, it had previously been interpereted that Canadian copyright law allowed Canadians to make copies of things, as long as they were for personal use.

Like having a photocopier in a library. Nothing wrong with making some copies of things, as long as you're not gonna try and compete with the book's publishers by selling the copies.

When applied to mp3s and P2P networks, it was considered that Canadians had a right to download, but not to upload.

The Canadian Recording Industry Association took some ISPs to court to try and get some info to sue 29 major mp3 uploaders, and not only did the judge shoot them down, but he basically said that an uploader has no clear reason to assume that the person getting the file will do anything illegal with it, like how the librarian doesn't know exactly what you plan on doing with your photocopy.

We're probably gonna get some additional new "international-stage compliant" laws on the matter sometime soon, like how the US got the DMCA, but if you remember, the DMCA supposedly had that special clause in it saying that it didn't apply to "abandonware".

but just because some guy on a message board says he works at Capcom doesn't mean he actually does-

Just to clarify, this person has recognized "VIP" status at GameFAQs, meaning that the board administrators have been able to confirm that he really does work at Capcom. Of course, they can always be fooled somehow, but it's rare (still possible of course, but rare).

He explained that he's not a "tech guy", and hasn't seen either console's innards, nor would he know what to do with them if he had the chance. Supposedly his job at Capcom ("not a translator" is all he would reveal on the message board) involves daily contact with Keiji Inafune (the producer of Megaman and Onimusha). While he's not needed, and other producers aren't busy, they're apparently very friendly people, willing to show him things they're working on, and ask for input, as well as chat about various topics. The game Shinji Mikami is most recently playing is supposedly Hitman.

Discussions about the future of handhelds apparently always come up when he's talking about long travel times to/from work in the Japanese transit system. And those conclusions about the PSP vs the NDS are all supposed to be the nearly unanimous opinion from just about everybody involved with R&D inside Capcom.

It all seems to make logical sense, but it's just hearsay at best, so that's why I called it a "rumor". People can take what they will from it.

I figure that until we get some real info from E3 (and even after we get real info), we can make-do with some rumors and gossip, to fill things out.

Nintendo Gaming / PSP vs NDS: Capcom Support Rumors
« on: March 31, 2004, 02:03:06 AM »
On the GameFAQs boards earlier, a Capcom VIP was "unofficially" relating some things he's been hearing from their R&D departments.

Basically, Capcom apparently thinks the NDS will pwn the PSP.

They think the PSP is some extremely-powerful hardware, but with the size of the PSP and NDS's screens, the PSP could have a LOT more polys on the screen that the NDS, and it would be tough to tell the difference. It's just too hard to see the details on the small screen.

And that's the way Sony's going. They're pushing for high-polygon 3D games, and PS1 ports. While Nintendo doesn't want developers to overreach with the NDS. So there probably won't be many direct PSP/NDS comparisons, but if there were, the NDS would probably do a pretty good job of holding it's own.

Also, there is currently no financial model that allows hardware makers to sell the system at a loss. They think that the PSP will be horribly overpriced, while the NDS will be about par for a Nintendo handheld.

Supposedly the NDS is really well designed. Clean, simple, and a dream to develop for. Previous GameBoy experience makes it even better. The PSP... ummm... isn't.

And here's one I haven't heard before. The disk media of the PSP is a horrible mistake. Sure, Sony can make minidisc players that almost eliminate disk skipping, but they only REDUCE the chance of skipping. And when you're playing an mp3, and it skips, the song might stutter. If you're playing a game, it will crash. Combined with Sony's infamous quality reputation with the PS1 and PS2, the disk media is a flat-out mistake.

So umm yeah. That's pretty much what they think is wrong with the PSP. The guy didn't even bring up anything about the possible new gaming applications of the NDS.

He was saying that the "PlayStation brand" will obviously sell a fair number of units, especially if Sony tries to market the system to older people who might be able to afford it, but their high-price and possible alienation of the younger markets will make it impossible for them to go beyond being a "niche" market.

But he says that Sony's planning on "pulling a Microsoft", and sticking with the handheld industry, even if it's a "failure", just so they can keep creeping in, with more and more marketshare, until they've been there so long that people are used to seeing them.

Apparently Capcom's planning to fully expoit the PSP's market, and has multiple PSP games in the works (not all of which will be launch titles, of course), but their REAL favored system is already clearly gonna be the NDS, barring any unforseen hurdles, like year-long hardware launch delays.

Funny how the guy bashes the concept of having a female main character when Metroid has a female lead and the current Castlevania games are basically Metroid games with vampires.

Quote

also funny how his title is "Obsessive Sailormoon Fanatic".

I think you misunderstood. The part in the quotes in my post wasn't what I was saying. It was words that I was sticking into the mouth of Koji Igarashi (Castlevania's current producer).

Here, I found the interview I was thinking about.
http://www.gamers.com/news/1368742

Quote

EGM: Would you make a Castlevania with a female main character?

IGA: Hm, there are difficult problems with that. As a gamer, I think that you become one with the character, and since Castlevania has a lot of male players, it's natural to have male characters. In Rondo of Blood, Maria was a silly, cute aside, but you still had Richter to make it serious. Plus, Mr. Hagihara (the director) had a playful sense of humor. He worked on Symphony as well, and he made the telescope part where, if you pan over to the left you can see a little mouse, and also where Alucard can sit down on the chair and prop his feet up.

EGM: After Tomb Raider, don't you think a female character is more acceptable?

IGA: It's possible I guess. Although, I purposefully left the Sonia Belmont character (from Castlevania: Legends for GBC) out of the official Castlevania chronology. (laughs) Usually, the vampire storyline motifs, females tend to be sacrificed. It's easier to come up with weak, feminine characters. I'll think about it more in the future, though. It's tough to fit a female hero into the early history of Castlevania, but as you move into the modern day, females can then more easily become a hero.

I think that IGN's probably full of crap (as usual).

Kuju is apparently owned by Nintnedo, and is supposedly making some sort of GameCube-exclusive product. And they apparently recently signed up to do something with Konami.

But if this Kuju executive says "Castlevania to GameCube!!" on a message board, is he announcing a game, or just saying what he wants (like Nintendo saying "Mario for President!!"). It's obvious that people at Kuju probably like Konami, and Nintendo, as they've hooked themselves up with both of them, apparently.

So yeah, if it's true, it's good news. But I'm quick to believe that IGN is full of crap. But I also know that they're in a good position, and are often privy to details that the rest of us don't get to know.

As for my thoughts on this potential Castlevania, I hope it's a remake of SotN, not LoI. Like how MGS:TTS was a remake of MGS, not MGS2.

Either that, or something all-new. I really don't care if it's not "made by Igarashi", as Konami seems to have severely burned their credibility with that stuff. "Castlevania 64 sucked. But that's because I didn't make it. So I'm gonna wipe it from the 'official Castlevania history'. And Castlevania Legends too. Because it let you play as a girl. Boys don't want to play as girls. They want 'cool' heroes. Not girls. So Lament of Innocence is going to be the first 'real' 3D Castlevania, and it's also the 'real' origin of Castlevania." Sorry Iga, but when you say stuff like that, your game has to actually be better than the ones you're stepping on.

At least that's what I assume because later in the SNES's life it's cartridges changed to what it would appear a new design to help prevent the breaking of the eject lever. But like I said, I'm just assuming this.

Good point. Reminds me of something I heard once.

Early SNES games had a "notch" in them. There was a wide plastic "peg" of sorts inside the SNES, and when you turned on the power, it would slide into the notch, "locking" the cart into the unit, so you couldn't yank the cart out while the power was on (you could prbably break your eject lever trying).

I was talking with a guy at Nintendo of Canada once (something I should really do more often, but you kind of need an excuse), and he explained that "some a-hole" went and took out a patent on the mechanisim, after Nintendo started using it.

As a way to avoid the issue, Nintendo removed the peg from all later SNES units (including the model-2), and they redesigned the "notch" into a "slant" for later SNES games.

This "slant" changed the way the mechanisim worked, so it would push the bar, switching off the power if you tried to eject the cart while the power was on. I don't think it really worked very well, but newer units didn't come with the peg (unless an NOC employee happened to "accidentally" drop one into your later-model SNES ), and older units used the peg in a different way "about half the time", so it put Nintendo into the clear.

This "patent on the locking mechanisim" situation also apparently affected the original GameBoy.

Oddly, later Super Famicom games were not affected by this. Which I guess means that it was just an "American" legal issue.

The mini-SNES also has the A/V (red/white/yellow) cords, unlike the older one which uses the RF switch thing that plugs into the cable in the back of your TV.

Yeah. But it's not so much that it "has" AV cables, but it "doesn't" have the RF-out port.

But the back of the unit was perfectly-sized so you could plug an RF adaptor from the N64 into the multi-out port.

(The N64's adaptor is a little "black brick" that lets you use the NES's "grey rectangle" RF switch. Odd note, the GameCube's RF adaptor is NES and N64 technology, with the same N64 logos and everything, just with new packaging.)

The N64's RF adaptor physically can't fit onto the earlier SNES model's multi-out port, unless you were to chop some plastic (which is pointless, since you can just use the RF port provided, but...).

I've got one of those. Found it at a flea market for $10 a long time ago.

The controllers in that auction are the wrong ones. "Super Nintendo" with an underline is printed on the controller face.

The controllers that came with the newer-model SNES have Nintendo's oval "race track" logo engraved into them instead.

The engraved ones are cooler, and obviously much more rare.

Edit: Actually, "engraved" seems like the wrong word. Umm... "recessed" maybe? Yeah, that sounds better.

For the price of a PS2 memory card, I really doubt Sony ever lost money on them. Those things sold for $35 at launch.

I'm not 100% certain, but I remember hearing, about a year or two in, that Sony cranked the MSRP on the up to something crazy like $45, but a bunch of retailers said that their customers wouldn't pay that much, and refused to get more stock from Sony at that price (which caused a small shortage, letting other retailers get away with charging the $45 price), and then a month later, Sony quietly knocked the price back down to $35.

I think I was reading about it as it happened in the GameSpot letter columns, where some retailers were venting. I think that's where it was. It was quite a while ago. I can hardly remember it.

It could be that Sony was just being greedy. But some people were speculating that it was a money-loser, and Sony was hoping to fix that. But again, I'm not an expert. That's just what I heard.

This new card will weigh in at more four times the size of the Memory Card 251. This card will hold 1019 blocks of memory.

For those who didn't know, the MC59 was 1/2 of a megabyte (four megabits). The MC251 is two megabytes, which is four times as big. But you can fit more than four times as much stuff on an MC251. A "59" times four should only be "236", not "251", right?

How does it work? Add "5" to each card. The MC59 is really a 64. The MC251 is really a 256. The math works when you do that.

This new MC-1019 is really a 1024. Something on these cards takes up 5 blocks (and index, or format, or something like that). The bigger the card you get, the less of an effect that will have (compared to just using multiple cards).

(BTW, this new card will be 8 megabytes, the same size as the memory card used by the PS2, which Sony has been rumored to lose money on for a long time now.)

What color do you think it'll be? The 59 was the white plasic from the front of the GCN. The 251 was the same black plastic as the Jet GameCube. What's next? Indigo? Platinum? Spice?

It says "ki n gu do mu ha-- tsu 2  PS2 - GCN  fu a i na ru fu a n to shi--  A.C-  DVD" (a long dash is supposed to be held for a second while pronouncing it).

Cleaned up, that's "Kingdom Hearts 2 PS2 - GCN Final Fantasy A.C- DVD"

"Final Fantasy A.C- DVD" seems to mean FF: Advent Children, so it should probably be split like this.
Kingdom Hearts 2 PS2 - GCN
Final Fantasy A.C- DVD

But that's assuming it wasn't a typo, or a Freudian slip, or (as most of the naysayers seem to believe), maybe the entire page isn't real, and was made up by someone with Photoshop (even though nobody has found the slightest evidence to suggest that, beyond simple "doubt").

GameCube Heaven has more stuff translated than I've been able to manage.

The top big-letter stuff is "Next Issue" and "Exclusive News".

The Chineese symbols under the logo that I couldn't translate say "Fully Loaded Information".

I still don't know what the stuff on the right says, but it obviously has something to do with the PS2, the Network Adaptor, and a PC version. Most likely some sort of large article about FFXI. Probably not breaking news, or anything we really need to hold our breath until the next issue for.

I don't know what the four Chineese symbols mean.

The last line is "ge- mu kyu- bu" (GameCube).

I remember once (way back in the SNES days) there was this thing (in America/Canada) where if you bought Super Metroid, you could cut up the box and send in the UPC code to get a $10 rebate (I think you also had to subscribe to Nintendo Power, and got a free Super Metroid Players guide, but that's normal Nintendo Power stuff).

I couldn't do it. So I didn't.

A while later, I eventually saw stacks of sealed copies of Super Metroid in a bargain bin for $10.

I didn't regret not chopping up my box. But I did think to myself that the $10 rebate could've given me a chopped-up version, plus one sealed-copy, complete with the barcode and everything. (I guess my only real regret is that I didn't pick up one of those sealed copies for $10, but I was younger, and didn't see the point in buying a game I already had.)

But yeah, it's something to think about. Do you think that any of the games on the list will eventually be found in a bargain bin, so you can replace your chopped up copy? I still wouldn't want to take scissors to my box, even if I knew it could be replaced, but to get a Zelda game...
