Nintendo Gaming / RE:"Knowing" what we "know" now; thoughts?
« on: January 14, 2006, 10:13:41 PM »
I'm not saying we should have storage capacities needed for Hi-DEF, but at least enough for third parties to get the job done. Just to drive this point home, XBOX 360 third party developers are complaining about the storage space.

But, see, Microsoft is forcing developers to go HD for all their games, which is something that Nintendo definitely isn't doing. So it makes sense that developers need more space for 360 games, as MS didn't go with HD-DVD (planning to implement it later?). With the Revolution, however, whatever Nintendo has in store, I think it will be enough. There won't be HD so developers should have more than enough space for Rev games.

Also, THQ said that DoR2 needed more space, but that's just a lame excuse. Many other developers used this same excuse to either not have a game support the Cube, or to say that they couldn't add more stuff to the game. However, they are usually just too lazy to squeeze everything in and/or need to finish the game quickly, so they rush it and don't add some things. Look at Nintendo; they can fit nearly anything onto the disc, and we know how complete their games are..

Not only the cost of the games, but also the features on the PSP that take away from gaming - the multimedia stuff. That's why the PSP's software tie-in ratio is so low and it doesn't have any million sellers. And developers pay a lot of attention to the tie-in ratio, as much as they do to marketshare..

EDIT: And kirby, why do you keep saying that? Counting the DS launch numbers from 2004, the DS is still ahead in North America, even if it's a slim lead..

Well, many of those are actually not confirmed, such as the specs (2 to 3 times), the Virtual Console pricing etc. Also, there's no way that the Rev won't have more RAM than the GameCube..

EDIT: Some other things not mentioned..

- Slot loaded drives -
- I think you mentioned this but USB 2.0 ports
- Only word on discs; proprietary 12 cm discs
- Games so far confirmed: SSBR, MP3, Mario 128, Animal Crossing, FFCC, new IP, Zelda Mario Kart and Pokemon mentioned, Camelot something, other pledged support such as Bandai, Konami etc
- This really excites me - there will be single disc multiplayer LAN wireless games. I think Merrick confirmed it, but it will be like the DS and its single cartridge multiplayer games. So no cables, only one disc.. wow

There's more but that's what I can think of..

Yes, it would be ahead overall, but not by much, which it definitely should be, with all the games that have come out..

It'll probably be like the DS; say white and black available at launch, then the rest released at regular intervals..

As a regular Blender user I'd say any prolonged holding of buttons should be abolished. In the case of MK they could easily invert A (not pushing A accellerates) because otherwise you're holding it down 99% of the time.
Well, you feel more in control when you're pushing it down. And also, it would feel very unnatural; it goes against the tradition, and people who are used to holding it down would have a tough time adjusting. Besides, when you drive a car, you hold the accelerator down, right?

But I can almost guarantee you that their games will be developed with the PS3/360 and HD in mind, then scaled back to be put on the Rev. This will be done quickly, so multiplatform titles are probably going to look really bad on the Rev. And the Cube got a bad image because multiplatform games on it were worse since they weren't developed specifically for the Cube, so think about what this will do to the Revolution. I also remember that EA quote, but it doesn't mean anything yet..

If they make enough use of the unique Revolution features, which as launch titles, they really should, then they would be exclusive...or they'd probably have seemingly clunky controls on the other consoles.  Which would work in Nintendo's favour.

But if they're porting games over from the other consoles, then it wouldn't work as well.  They should be developed for the Revolution from the ground up, or at least first, for them to "count".
That's the big problem; EA, Activion etc will either not use the motion sensing or if they do, it could turn out terrible if it was rushed. In the perfect world, the Rev's controller would make third party games different and better on the Revolution, giving buyers more of a reason to get a Rev than a 360/PS3. However, multiplatform companies typically rush the ports and don't spend much time on one console. Especially since the Rev isn't even the market leader; it would be highly unlikely.

And if 3rd parties use the NRC unintuitively and it worsens the gameplay, then it could be really bad for Nintendo's image.. That's why I like what Nintendo is doing by going out to third parties and suggesting ideas for their franchises. Hopefully they work to keep these types of games off the market.

From what we've played;

Peach & Daisy - Flower - 3 turns: every space you go you get +3 coins, AND it protects you from orbs where you just have to pass.

Dry Bones & Boo - 2 turns: makes you invisible adn doubles your dice roll every time. Not sure if it protects from orbs

Yoshi & Birdo - 3 turns: if you pass any orb you swallow it up and get it

Wario & Waluigi - 3? turns: Vaccuum: spin wheel to see how much money everyone gives you - comes to quite a bit

Toad & Toadette: Hmm, can't remember..

Who else?

Just because you hear only the PSP mentioned during conversations doesn't mean that it has more hype - in fact, from what I've talked to people, its momentum has slowed down considerably, and many more people I know have bought a DS and no PSP. And with all the great games that have come out, including Nintendo's first online system, there's a game for everyone.

Also, there are small face buttons so that they can act as an alternative D-Pad for left handed players..

Yeah, but I don't think that even Sony's next handheld entrant (if they have one, that is) will be like the DS either. Also, this doesn't apply to Sony only - even if a new company creates a handheld, I don't think it will be like the DS.
