TalkBack / RE: Iwata on DS Connectivity
« on: March 02, 2004, 06:23:20 AM »
Nintendo's president speaks out on how the DS will communicate.

Mainichi Interactive has just posted an interview with Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata. In the interview, which was conducted before Nintendo had officially announced the DS, Iwata speaks about the forthcoming handheld system.

Most importantly, he revealed that the Nintendo DS will feature a short-range wireless communication feature. This wireless communication will allow multiple Nintendo DS systems to link up with each other for expanded gameplay. It will likely be similar to the wireless connectivity used in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green as well as Mario Golf: Advance Tour.

The interview also goes on to repeat Nintendo's current stance on video games. The company still believes that the industry is at a dead end and that it will take lots of innovation in order to get things really moving again.

The two characters switch games.

CRASH BANDICOOT AND SPYRO THE DRAGON COMBINE FORCES TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE

Top videogame characters guest star in each other's respective adventures for the first time in upcoming Game Boy Advance action platformers

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 20, 2004) - Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced the next installments in the best-selling Crash Bandicoot(r) and Spyro(tm) the Dragon videogame franchises.  Crash Bandicoot Purple:  Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange:  The Cortex Conspiracy are scheduled to ship on the Game Boy(r) Advance video game system in second quarter 2004.  For the first time, the two renowned characters will meet up in each other's respective adventures in these upcoming action platformers.  Albany, New York based studio, Vicarious Visions, is developing the games.

In these single-player side-scrolling adventures, gamers can also link up with as many as three friends for numerous multi-player modes, including Party Games, Wager Games and Card Trading.  Players can compete and win in mini-games galore, found throughout the environments, which reward with trading cards -- a new feature for both franchises.  Connecting both titles gives gamers the option of unlocking special content and allows them to trade and/or wager the cards with their friends.

"We're extremely excited about putting a compelling new spin on these two immensely popular franchises by joining them together in such a creative way," said Michael Pole, SVP, Worldwide Development, VU Games.  "Both titles are completely immersive stand-alone games that maximize the current technology of GBA linking - delivering the deepest Crash and Spyro GBA experiences yet."

In Crash Bandicoot Purple:  Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange:  The Cortex Conspiracy, Dr. Neo Cortex (Crash's nemesis) and Ripto (Spyro's nemesis) have accidentally met up through underground portals and are set on taking over the entire universe.  In an attempt to share resources and expand their territories, Cortex and Ripto are using portals to flood their two worlds with their evil minions.  Crash and Spyro must team up with each other to discover the identity of the new menace and save the universe from this evil plot!

The Crash Bandicoot franchise made its debut in 1996 and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.  The Spyro the Dragon franchise premiered in 1998 and has sold more than 12 million units worldwide.

TalkBack / RE:Future Console Predictions
« on: February 20, 2004, 10:51:07 AM »
Get out your crystal balls and play along: Consoles expected to rake in $35 billion by 2008.

Next Generation Video-Game Consoles to Outsell All Previous Platforms, Reaching $35bn by 2008 Says Juniper Research

BASINGSTOKE, ENGLAND - Additional features and functionality are set to transform the next generation of video-game consoles into intelligent home media centres. The leading developers across the sector have revealed to Juniper Research their ambitious plans to integrate high-speed Internet gaming, wireless connectivity between machines and handhelds, as well as other new entertainment functions.

Due for launch from early 2005, the big three manufacturers (Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo) are racing to develop and launch the next winning platform. New competitors are also hoping to take a slice of the new wider market.

Keri Allan, Games Specialist at Juniper Research found that "The next generation of machines will take a leap into the world of convergence and offer gamers a home media centre rather than just a gaming machine. Graphics and speed will evolve, but connectivity between devices will also come to the forefront. This functionality will help consoles to finally become a mainstream entertainment medium, and put the stereotypical image of the 'computer gaming geek' to rest."

The new study also reveals:

- Online gaming from video-game consoles will reach almost 28m regular users by 2008, as always-on broadband access achieves significant penetration across the developed world. The downloading of new games and levels will also become mainstream.

- Next generation handheld hardware revenues are forecast to reach $25bn by 2008. Competition and price pressure will increase in this sector, as Nintendo (the leader) faces new launches from Sony, and other new machines such as the Gamepark and Zodiac.

One short term issue that the games sector is already beginning to face is a reduction in demand for the current generation of games platforms. This will become an increasing problem for the sector as the release of the new platforms approach. "Price drops, bundling and add-ons will continue to be in favour, but savvy users will increasingly be holding-off making a purchase until the new hardware is ready in 2005," Keri noted.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo Celebrates 20 Million GBAs in U.S.
« on: February 14, 2004, 05:39:04 AM »
The little juggernaut just keeps on rolling.

DID YOU KNOW?

Nintendo's Game Boy Advance Hits 20 Million Milestone

February 13, 2004 - Selling an average of one Game Boy® Advance every second around the clock since its launch on June 11, 2001, Nintendo has hit a new record, selling 20 million Game Boy Advance systems in the United States. But just what does 20 million Game Boy Advance units mean?  It's enough to give one to every U.S. airline passenger during an average two-week travel period.

Stacked on top of each other, they would reach the orbit of the International Space Station – with enough left over to completely cover every football field in the Big Ten.

It's enough for every man, woman and child in this week's primary states of Tennessee and Virginia, as well as the entire population of Massachusetts.

Made into a pile, they would build a stack more than 55 times taller than Mount Everest.

It's enough to give one to every person watching an episode of Friends or CSI. With the introduction of a new, limited-edition Game Boy® Advance SP silver-and-black casing, which is available now, and exciting new games like Metroid®: Zero Mission, Mario vs. Donkey Kong™, Mario Golf: Advance Tour™ and Final Fantasy®: Crystal Chronicles, designed for Nintendo GameCube™ but playable using Game Boy Advance, the momentum will continue unabated.

In 2003, Game Boy Advance was the No. 1 video game system, outselling the nearest console by 2 million units. The Game Boy Advance line got a boost after the March 23, 2003, debut of the stylish, flip-top Game Boy Advance SP. Sales in 2003 were the best in the 14-year history of the Game Boy® series. In the same year, U.S. consumers bought more than twice as many Game Boy Advance units as MP3 players, 8.1 million compared with 3.5 million.  Game Boy Advance has now sold more than 50 million units worldwide.

Pre-order a certain Pokémon game and get a bonus disc with the critter inside.

Pokemon Fans Get Their Wish with a New, Secret Character -- Jirachi

Expect a Frenzy as Fans Clamor to Snag the Legendary Character

REDMOND, Wash.--Legend has it that this secret Pokemon(R) character wakes only once every 1,000 years and has the ability to grant wishes. And beginning Feb. 9, one of Pokemon fans' biggest wishes -- to get the secret character named Jirachi -- will come true. Fans who reserve a copy of Pokemon Colosseum(TM) -- made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube(TM) -- will take home a bonus disc packed with exclusive Pokemon extras, including the special gift of Jirachi.

The Nintendo GameCube bonus disc contains a sneak peek of the upcoming Pokemon movie Jirachi Wish Maker, a preview of the Pokemon Colosseum game and, for the first time, the ability to add Jirachi to the Pokemon(R) Ruby and Pokemon(R) Sapphire collection. By using a Nintendo GameCube(TM) Game Boy(R) Advance cable, players can download Jirachi from the Nintendo GameCube directly to their Pokemon Ruby or Pokemon Sapphire games on their Game Boy(R) Advance.

"Pokemon Colosseum combines the best of both role-playing elements and 3-D battle games," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "With this special pre-sell offer, fans will be battling to see who can be the first to buy Pokemon Colosseum."

Pokemon Colosseum, the first 3-D Pokemon title for Nintendo GameCube, offers players a unique opportunity -- two ways to play: a story mode and a battle mode. In the story mode, players must rescue or "snag" Pokemon that have been captured by an evil organization, "Team Snag 'Em," and are now termed "Shadow Pokemon." Players who "snag" the Pokemon and nurture them back to their true spirits are rewarded with the ability to use them in battle. In the 3-D battle mode, up to four people can play two vs. two in an environment more elaborate and intense than in any other Pokemon game.

The Pokemon franchise, which recently entered its sixth year in the United States, remains incredibly popular. Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, both released last March for Game Boy Advance, were the second and third best-selling video games for all of 2003, according to NPD Funworld.

Pokemon Colosseum, Rated E for Everyone, launches March 24 at an MSRP of $49.99.

This GBA version is perfect whenever you feel the need to satisfy your Sim's needs on the road.

EA SHIPS THE SIMS BUSTIN' OUT ON GAME BOY ADVANCE

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. Dec. 2, 2003 --Electronic Arts today announced that The Sims Bustin' Out for the Game Boy Advance has shipped under the EA Games brand in North America. For the first time, Game Boy Advance players will be able to experience the zany and unpredictable world of The Sims. Players can take direct control of their Sim to explore 20 all-new Game Boy Advance exclusive locations as they work their way from rags to riches. The Sims Bustin' Out Game Boy Advance version will support connectivity with the Nintendo GameCube version scheduled to release in mid-December.

"Sims fans can now take their Sims anywhere with The Sims Bustin' Out on Game Boy Advance," said Sinjin Bain, Vice President and Executive Producer of the game at EA's Maxis studio. "In bringing The Sims to the Game Boy Advance, we've redesigned the gameplay to translate the core Sims gameplay into a unique Game Boy Advance experience, while keeping the signature offbeat humor of The Sims."

True to the original The Sims games, Game Boy Advance players will create a Sim with a unique appearance and personality to control throughout the game. As players make their way through the adventure, they will need to satisfy the traditional eight core Sim motives including bladder, comfort, hygiene, and, of course, hunger.

Players begin their adventure on Hayseed Farm, but will soon make their way to various locations in SimValley eventually living in the coolest cribs, such as the swanky Waterfront Villa. Players will explore over 20 locations such as Olde Salty's Fish and Chips Stand and the rockin' Club Rubb. They will meet a wild cast of over 30 new characters exclusive to the Game Boy Advance such as Old Salty, Lottie Cash, and Detective Dan. In addition, players will unlock a scooter that will let them make their way around SimValley with speed and style. Players can even visit an animal shelter and adopt a dog or cat to keep them company.

New to The Sims Bustin' Out is a close-up social interaction screen that will let players have conversations with other Sims, making friends and enemies in order to advance through levels and complete goals. Players also will be challenged with eight new career mini-games including Smoothie Slider, Cliff Diver X, and Pizza Pandemonium.

Unlike previous The Sims games, players will not purchase items from a catalog. Players will now collect over 150 Game Boy Advance exclusive objects such as a Pinball Machine, Giant Tiki Head, and Beejaphone Guitar. Players obtain objects by attending once-a-day auctions and shopping in stores. The Sims Bustin' Out supports the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable; players can link to a friend's Game Boy Advance to trade or sell rare objects through live auctions. By linking with their friends, players can also unlock a special location, Paradise Island, that features a special store with exclusive objects.

The Sims Bustin' Out Game Boy Advance version will support connectivity with The Sims Bustin' Out Nintendo GameCube version. When connected, Game Boy Advance players will unlock a hidden game cabinet that will allow them to use their Nintendo GameCube Sims to play mini-games on the Game Boy Advance and earn extra Simoleons. Players will also be able to download and play their Nintendo GameCube Sim in the Game Boy Advance world and obtain Simoleons, motives, and skills to bring back with them to the Nintendo GameCube version. This enables players to take their Nintendo GameCube Sim with them anywhere.

The Sims Bustin' Out for the Game Boy Advance was developed by EA's Maxis studio in conjunction with Griptonite Games, an Amaze Entertainment Studio and carries an ESRB rating of "E" for Everyone with descriptors of mild violence and comic mischief. It is available in stores now for a suggested retail price of US $29.99 or by direct order from the EA Store(SM) at http://www.ea.com or by calling 877-EA GAMES (1-877-324-2637). MARIO KART: DOUBLE DASH!! PREPARES TO RUN THE COMPETITION OFF THE ROAD

The Season's Expected Best Seller Takes the Pole Position

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 17, 2003 – The holiday season's most anticipated video game, Mario Kart®: Double Dash!!™ for the Nintendo GameCube™, is gassed up and ready to roll. The game, which launches today, brings high-octane competition to the couches of America. It continues the tradition of rich graphics and multiple challenging courses, while bringing entirely new racing modes, weapons and strategies into play.

Mario Kart remains one of the best-loved series in video game history, having sold more than 23 million units worldwide during the past 11 years. When Mario Kart: Double Dash!! launched in Japan on Nov. 7, it immediately raced to No. 1 on the sales charts, selling twice as many units as the No. 2 title.

"Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will be the hottest game of this holiday season," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Whether players battle one-on-one or race against a group of friends, the game sparks friendly rivalries that keep them coming back to this No. 1 franchise."

Competition proves fiercer than ever due to better track design, faster karts, increased AI and twice the probability for chaos. The co-op mode offers a new way to team up with a friend and compete against other friends, as one player drives and the second player in the kart doles out damage.

The co-op mode, in conjunction with a LAN connection, allows up to 16 players to compete at one time. Up to eight karts race at once, with one player driving and the other handling items and executing slide-attacks from the back seat. The two players can swap places to strategically use power-ups for maximum impact.

Players can race against one other in "Versus" mode, or try to beat their best times in time trials. The popular battle modes have been expanded as well to include Bob-omb Blast and Shine Thief, in addition to the original Balloon Battle. Bob-omb Blast is an all-out game of bombardment on wheels with the winner being the one to "tag" their opponents the most. Shine Thief mode is a high-speed version of "capture the flag," as players try to avoid opponents' weapons and grab the target "Shine" before the clock runs out. Within each type of battle mode game, players can choose from a variety of levels, including Pipe Plaza, which is full of warp pipes to zip karts out of (and sometimes even into) danger.

No matter what mode players opt for, they get to choose from a host of Nintendo characters to help them during races, including Mario™, Luigi, Wario™, Donkey Kong® and Peach. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is available now at an MSRP of $49.99, and is Rated E for Everyone.

The worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home and portable video game systems. Each year, hundreds of all-new titles for the best-selling Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo GameCube™ systems extend Nintendo's vast game library and continue the tradition of delivering a rich, diverse mix of quality video games for players of all ages. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.8 billion video games globally, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario™ and Donkey Kong® and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid™, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Nintendo won't stop the campaign madness.  Mario announces his bid for Presidency.

MARIO ANNOUNCES BID FOR U.S. PRESIDENCY

The Mario Party 5 Platform: All Fun, No Politics

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 11, 2003 – Promising "pasta in every pot," and "Nintendo GameCube™ systems in every home," video game pioneer Mario™ announced his bid for the U.S. presidency today and encouraged his supporters to join the Mario Party.

Some scholars wondered whether Mario could overcome the constitutional hurdles facing his candidacy. For starters, they noted, Mario was not born in the United States, and is short of the constitutionally mandated 35 years. However, Mario, who routinely overcomes hurdles with a series of flip-flops worthy of any politician (as most recently evidenced in the new game for Nintendo GameCube, Mario Party® 5), remained undaunted by critics.

"With the many actors getting into politics recently, I thought, 'Hey, I'm more entertaining than many of them,' not to mention, I'm a lot more animated," Mario says. "Anyone who gets involved with the Mario Party knows that it's all about nonstop action and fun."

The goal of Mario Party 5 for the Nintendo GameCube (available today at an MSRP of $49.95) is to restore peace in Dream World, which was disrupted by evildoers Bowser and the Koopa Kids. People who join the Mario Party 5 fun will find that they can play more than 60 new mini-games, making it by far the busiest and most active of all the parties. The game sports new game boards, new playable characters, an expanded one-player mode and, of course, the multiplayer madness that made the franchise famous in the first place. This sequel extends Mario Party's reign as the king of the party game!

Standing at just 5 feet tall, Mario would be the shortest U.S. president ever, 4 inches shorter than James Madison. He would be only the second bachelor president, after James Buchanan (Princess Peach has offered to take on the duties of the first lady).

Sources close to the campaign said that Mario was considering following in the footsteps of John F. Kennedy by making his brother, Luigi, an integral part of his administration, possibly even his running mate. The rest of Mario's top advisers embody diversity itself with the inclusion of Toad (a 29-inch diplomat from the Mushroom Kingdom), Yoshi™ (a long-tongued dinosaur) and Donkey Kong® (a stubborn ape). The political quintet has been dubbed the "Mario Party 5."

Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.8 billion video games globally, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario and Donkey Kong and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid™, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

TalkBack / RE: Mario Kart Unlockables REVEALED!
« on: November 06, 2003, 01:10:44 PM »
We dug into the official Mario Kart: Double Dash website and discovered the lineup of unlockable racers and tracks!  Spoilers within!

Nintendo's new Mario Kart: Double Dash website (see link above) hints at secret characters and tracks, but all of the locked goodies are marked with silhouettes and the words "Coming soon!"  But the diligent PGC staff is always looking for secrets, and thanks to a little snooping around from our staff artist, Ryan Jones, these secrets are coming now.

Ryan tooled around the website and eventually found a document which duplicates the racer info on the site.  The only difference is that it also includes the secret racers at the bottom of the list.  The secret characters are (highlight the hidden text to view it):

Toad
"Toad is small and fast, and with his Super Mushroom, he can give any kart a real boost.  Unlock him by..."

Toadette
"If you feel the need for speed, choose Toadette for your kart, and hold on tight.  Unlock her by..."

Petey Piranha
"Petey Piranha can grab any special item, allowing him to lay waste to the rest of the field.  Unlock him by..."

King Boo
"If you're not afraid of ghosts, you will be once King Boo is through with you.  Unlock him by..."

Obviously, the site still doesn't have info on how to actually unlock these characters.  Ryan also examined another document and found evidence of four secret tracks, though there isn't any text description of them.  The special cup features (highlight again to view):

Wario Colosseum
Dino Dino Jungle
Bowser's Castle
Rainbow Road

Some of this info has already been reported by European media sources, who received the final version weeks ago.  But now you've got confirmation, courtesy of Nintendo's official game website.

TalkBack / RE:Warp Pipe Alpha for Windows
« on: October 25, 2003, 05:27:42 PM »
Now Windows users can help test the GameCube online application.

We told you last week about the first alpha release of Warp Pipe, an application in development that aims to allow GameCube users to play each other online with LAN-enabled games.  That version was only available to Linux users, but now a Windows version has been released.  You can download it at the link above.

Keep in mind that this is still an alpha release, so it is very early.  However, the hard-working coders at Warp Pipe are making progress every day, and they still hope to have the program optimized and running securely by the time Mario Kart: Double Dash is released in the US.  For now, you'll need a copy of Kirby Air Ride (along with some other equipment and a broadband connection) in order to test out online play for GameCube.

Thanks to Sean at GCA for alerting us to the update!

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo of Europe Reward System Overhaul
« on: August 18, 2003, 07:22:40 PM »
Screw those lame wallpapers and screensavers, Europeans can now use their Stars on shirts and games.

Nintendo introducing a customer rewards system to North America may be new for us, but for Europeans, they've had something in place for quite some time now.  The European Stars Catalogue has been offering meager wallpaper and screen saver downloads exclusively for those who have purchased Nintendo products.

NOE announced today that starting next Monday the 25th, you can trade in your Stars for games, t-shirts and various Nintendo gifts.  The Stars Catalouge is currently offline while Nintendo overhauls the system, so all your Europeans had better go out and buy Nintendo to collect those Stars.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo announces new games, rewards
« on: August 07, 2003, 06:11:40 AM »
Nintendo drops a few tidbits, looking to defuse the negative press over GameCube sales...

Revealed in a management meeting Thursday in Japan, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the company has several games in the works, as well as a new product "which will be surprising and unique" to be revealed in the spring.  This mention was made in conjunction with discussion of Sony's PSP project, but it's not yet clear if it will be a hardware product, such as a new handheld device.  It's suspected that this may be Iwata telegraphing when they will make their announcement of specifications for the successor to Nintendo's GameCube console.

Among the announcements this morning was the revelation that the Donkey Kong franchise for GameCube is being developed in partnership with Namco, the same company Nintendo is working with on the next Star Fox game.  Also announced was a GameCube version of "Made in Wario", known as Wario Ware: Mega Microgame$ in the US.  The quirky title was an instant hit on GBA, due to its fast and furious gameplay and simple controls.

Finally, Nintendo announced a rewards program, similar to airline frequent flyer miles, called "Club Nintendo".  Similar to a system employed by Nintendo in Europe, you earn points buying Nintendo products and are able to trade in these points to earn limited edition Nintendo products, such as unique controllers that will not be sold in stores.  Nintendo says that the program will commence by the end of the year in both the United States and Japan.

GAME BOY® ADVANCE BRAND IS ON FIRE

Melbourne, Australia 28th July 2003 – The Game Boy® Advance brand is on Fire – literally. With sales of the latest addition to this brand, the Game Boy Advance SP, reaching over 50,000 units in Australia alone, Nintendo Australia is please to announce a new colour in this red hot range – Flame.

Flame will be the fourth colour in this hand held range that has seen sales, on average, of over 500 units a day since launching on March 20th this year.

“The strength of this brand continues to be proven time and time again. The success of the Game Boy Advance SP has been so wide-reaching that we have had problems fulfilling the local retail demand”, says David Yarnton, Director of Sales and Marketing, Nintendo Australia.

Kmart’s Buyer – Video Games, Scott Teal, reiterates David’s comments saying, “The Game Boy Advance SP range has been an outstanding success since launching at the end of March. Sales will continue to gain momentum with the addition of Flame in mid September. This item will definitely be on everyones Christmas list and we are expecting great sell thru results”.

Game Boy Advance SP Flame will go on sale on September 19th nation wide for a suggested retail price of $199.95.
