Starting today, it'll be the first and only videogame seen in Canton's hallowed halls.

EA's Madden NFL 2004 to be Unveiled and Displayed in Pro Football Hall of Fame

Storied EA SPORTS Franchise of 14 Years Recognized and Honored

CANTON, Ohio & REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 29, 2003--The most popular football videogame franchise of all time, Madden NFL(TM) Football, from Electronic Arts will be honored and displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame starting today. The newest version of this storied franchise from EA SPORTS, Madden NFL 2004, will be unveiled Saturday. The Madden NFL Football Franchise is the only interactive videogame to receive this honor at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"We are pleased that football's most unique franchise, Madden NFL Football, which has had such an impact on American sports culture is now a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame," said Hall of Fame Executive Director John Bankert. "This exciting new interactive exhibit from EA SPORTS is destined to be a fan favorite here at the Hall of Fame."

The Madden NFL Football franchise has sold more than 30 million copies in its 14 year history. When EA approached John Madden with the idea for a football videogame Madden insisted that the game be 11 on 11 gameplay with realistic playbooks and player ratings. This set the standard for all sports videogames and later led to the moniker "If it's in the Game, It's in the Game.(TM)" The Madden NFL Football franchise was the first to use motion capture technology in 1994, giving the videogame player models a more authentic look and feel. In 1998 Franchise Mode was added to the series, which enable players to not only coach and call the plays for their team but track their success over numerous NFL seasons. To this day it remains one of Madden NFL Football's most popular features. Madden still plays an integral part of the development process of the game each year, spending hours reviewing player ratings, gameplay issues and ensuring it stays true to the authenticity of professional NFL football.

"I'm recognized as much for Madden NFL Football as I am from being a coach and now a broadcaster," said Madden. "This is a testament to the labor of love I have had for this game the past 14 years. What an honor to be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

Madden NFL 2004 will be in stores everywhere August 14 and will be available on the PC, the PlayStation®, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft, the Nintendo GameCube(TM), and the Game Boy® Advance.

'Super Code' Hidden in Universal Pictures' Number One Boxoffice Hit, 'the Hulk,' Unlocks Original Marvel Comics Creation for All New Game Play in 'Hulk' Interactive Game

LOS ANGELES, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Pictures confirmed today the presence of a "supercode," hidden in their number one box office hit "The Hulk," based upon one of Marvel Comics' most popular Super Hero® series, that unlocks completely new gameplay in the critically-acclaimed "Hulk" videogame. "Hulk," by Vivendi Universal Games, was released recently for the PC, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox(TM) Video Game System from Microsoft and Nintendo GameCube(TM). Hulk fans who correctly identify this code in the movie will be rewarded with the ability to re-play the interactive game with a new look for the green goliath -- gray. As an homage to the character's first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #1 (1962), players will be able to continue to rampage through the game in the Hulk's original color, which was changed to green by the second issue in the long-running comic book series.

"The 'Hulk' video game was designed with the goal of rewarding fans who experience both the movie and the game," said Nicholas Longano, VU Games' SVP of Marketing. "We created the Gray Hulk bonus gameplay as the ultimate payoff in which the key to the treasure is literally buried in the body of the film."

The code that unlocks Gray Hulk appears in a scene right before Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk for the first time. Gamers can unlock the Gray Hulk by entering the code word into any computer terminal in the game.

Additional special game content can be unlocked with a series of passwords related to the film's plot and characters. Clues can be found online at www.thehulk.com.

TalkBack / RE: Camelot on Golden Sun 3 Status
« on: June 02, 2003, 07:21:11 PM »
Looking for another game in the Golden Sun series?  If you are, Camelot has something to tell you.

Camelot recently updated its Japanese website with some news about what it's been working on lately.  It seems that many people have been asking the developer when the next game in the Golden Sun line might be coming out.

It turns out that they are hard at work with both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, at the same time.  With Camelot's small development team (about 30 people), it's hard for them to work on multiple projects at once, so any Golden Sun game that may or may not be in the works will need to wait.  Camelot says to refer back to Nintendo's official Japanese site for any new news regarding the next Golden Sun.

Note that this is not a solid confirmation of a new Golden Sun game.  However, if a new game is announced, we'll be sure to be the first to let you all know about it.  Stay tuned.

TalkBack / 3DO Files for Bankruptcy
« on: May 28, 2003, 06:49:06 PM »
The company behind Army Men, High Heat Baseball, and the upcoming Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is going broke.  Please, hold your applause until the end of the announcement.

According to GameSpot, The 3DO Company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  The infamous publisher has subsisted on sales of its mysteriously popular Army Men series for years, but it seems the well has run dry.

3DO is actively seeking a buyer, either for the entire company or any of its assets.  Being that the publisher's most ambitious game in years, the upcoming Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, is known to be a favorite of CEO Trip Hawkins, that title will likely be pushed hard to other companies, so that it can eventually be finished.

The next 3DO release on GameCube was to be a version of their only critically acclaimed series, High Heat Baseball.  The game had seen several delays, but is currently finished and waiting to be printed onto discs and shipped out to stores.  At this point, it's unclear as to whether that process will ever be completed, but our sources within the company tell us it's highly doubtful.

TalkBack / RE: Done with your Demo Disc? That's what YOU thought!
« on: May 24, 2003, 10:21:31 AM »
We've found a silly little secret on Nintendo's Preview Disc that adds just a bit more gameplay ...

Just when you think it's safe to put that Preview Disc away, those wacky guys at Sega manage to give you another reason to dust it off.  (That is, if you've bothered putting it away instead of playing Viewtiful Joe!)

There is an extra playable "level" hidden in the Billy Hatcher demo, accessible if you hold down A as the game is loaded.  The "level" is layed out very similar to the normal one, but there are a few new objectives, and new enemies to watch out for.

To make sure you can get into it, launch the Billy Hatcher demo by hitting A at the "PRESS A TO PLAY" screen.  As the game is loading, press and HOLD the A Button again, and keep holding it until you've pressed "Start" to begin the Billy Hatcher Demo.  Don't let go of A until you're able to play.  It won't look much different at first, but once you get down the ramp, you'll see some key differences right away.

Enjoy!

    * Increasing its third-party product lineup with multiple new and exclusive games from world-class independent publishers, such as Metal Gear Solid®: The Twin Snakes from Konami and Star Wars® Rogue Squadron® III: Rebel Strike™ from LucasArts.  Dozens more games continue to multiply with the widest offerings from companies like Electronic Arts, Capcom, Namco, Sega and Square-Enix, Co. Ltd., broadly expanding the Nintendo GameCube portfolio to more than 320 titles by year's end.

    * Offering unique and distinguished connected-play between console and hand-held systems, unlocking special features and extending normal game play for franchise legends including Pac-Man, Final Fantasy®: Crystal Chronicles™, Nintendo Puzzle Collection™, and two new Zelda titles—The Legend of Zelda®: Four Swords™ and The Legend of Zelda®: Tetra's Trackers™.

    * Allowing players to race the futuristic F-Zero® circuit, co-developed by Sega, in parallel at-home or commercial arcades.  Players will be able to race a home-built, custom machine in the arcade or using a memory card, transfer additional pilots, and all kinds of custom parts from the arcade to the Nintendo GameCube.

    * Continuing to evolve its celebrated franchise characters in all-new adventures for Nintendo GameCube with games such as Mario Kart®: Double Dash!! ™ Kirby™ Air Ride, Pokémon Colosseum™, Mario Party® 5 and Mario Golf™: Toadstool Tour.  Also introducing new adventures including the exclusive, first-person shooter Geist™, from n-Space, Inc.

    * Pulling the action from the small screen and placing it on the big TV screen with the Nintendo GameCube™ Game Boy® Player, which will have players revisiting more than 1,000 classic Game Boy games like never before.

    * Unveiling 120 new Game Boy Advance titles this year, including Super Mario® Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3™, Donkey Kong Country™, Pokémon® Pinball, Final Fantasy Tactics® Advance, Mario and Luigi™, Fire Emblem™, and Sword of Mana™.

"Thanks to our tremendous contributions from our third-party partners and increasing library of connectivity titles, we're delivering more entertainment and diversity to Nintendo fans than any time since we launched our first home console 20 years ago," explains Satoru Iwata, president, Nintendo Co., Ltd.

"Since the beginning of the year, Nintendo has taken an additional 11 market share points from its competitors," explains Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc.  "The collection of games built specifically for our systems continue a tradition of quality and value, and the momentum is in our corner."

TalkBack / Nintendo Announces Geist for GameCube

Developed in conjunction with n-Space, Geist allows you to possess characters to use their abilities.

NINTENDO 'POSSESSES' N-SPACE TO DEVELOP GEIST

Exclusive Game for Nintendo GameCube Features Ability to 'Possess' Game Characters

REDMOND, Wash., May 13, 2003 – Boosting its exclusive Nintendo GameCube™  library, Nintendo of America Inc. today announces a development collaboration on the new game Geist with n-Space, Inc., a Florida-based video game developer.  Based on an original concept by n-Space, the game will be developed by n-Space with creative and technical input from Nintendo and will be published by Nintendo.

Geist leads players through the game in a first-person perspective, providing the unique ability to 'possess' other characters in the game.  As a ghost or Geist, players can advance through the game by virtually entering the bodies of other characters, taking advantage of their physical and mental abilities.  Combining a mixture of action and stealth styles of game play, Geist adds an enthralling new mixture to the first-person genre.

"This collaboration with n-Space is another step we're taking to expand our global development resources as we continue to make games that appeal to all gaming audiences," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc.  "Geist will provide players with a truly innovative experience only available on the Nintendo GameCube."

Geist marks the first title n-Space has developed exclusively for Nintendo GameCube.  Founded in 1994, n-Space has developed several million unit-selling games, such as Duke Nukem: Time To Kill, and demonstrates a strong understanding of immersive game play and action.

According to Erick S. Dyke, n-Space president, "This agreement is a milestone for n-Space, and we're pleased to offer this innovative game title exclusively on Nintendo GameCube."

Additional details regarding Geist will be available at the E3 Expo 2003, May 14-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

TalkBack / Zelda Tops UK Charts
« on: May 07, 2003, 10:20:06 PM »
Link does more in a day what Sam Fisher did in a week.  Looks like the CIA should get someone better.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was released in Europe on the GameCube's second birthday, May 3.  Just recently, the ELSPA (the European version of the NPD Group) showed off their top-20 UK game sales charts for the week ending that same May 3.

It will come as no surprise that Wind Waker conducted its way to the top of the sales on a single day, dethroning Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and its 22 weeks on the chart.  No numbers were given, but it's safe to say that the game sold more than its fair share of copies.

It should also be noted that A Link to the Past on the GBA has been on the chart for 6 weeks, coming in this time around at number 19.

TalkBack / Pay-to-Play Online Madden?
« on: May 07, 2003, 03:09:30 PM »
If the GameCube version of Madden ever goes online, you might need to pay to play.

CNN Money's videogame columnist, Chris Morris, has a column talking about Electronic Arts' online gaming practices, and how it wasn't making as much money as it used to be.

EA's free (but ad-riddled) onling gaming website, Pogo is still making EA money, but the ads that the site forces upon you isn't bringing in the cash that is has in past years.  While in a conference call about this topic, EA's president and COO John Riccitello made a comment about the world's number one football game:

"I think in this generation there's only very modest revenue potential for [Xbox Live and Sony Online]," he said. "What has yet to be proven, but I think it represents a significant revenue opportunity if we can play it out properly, is added revenue generation capability in the back end. So instead of just selling Madden at $49, we may be able to generate subscription [revenue] on the back of that. At this point, that's frankly more speculative than it is substantive, but that's what we're going to be working on over the balance of the cycle."

In other words, don't expect to play Madden for free, if or when the GameCube version ever gets to have this feature.  If EA sheds anymore light on this topic at E3, we'll be sure to grab it for you.

TalkBack / Metroid Prime Record Set
« on: May 03, 2003, 06:08:59 PM »
Retro Studios' masterpiece has been completed in only 1 hour, 46 minutes.

Twin Galaxies, the organization responsible for recording and maintaining world records in gaming, has announced their newest world record holder.  Henru Wang from Berkeley, California has beaten Metroid Prime in just 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Wang accomplished this feat through a combination of speedy movement, strategic use of the Morph Ball and bombs for transportation, and knowledge of which upgrades can be skipped or obtained out of order.  He plans to continue improving his time, but the current milestone is enough to earn his place in the record books.

Hit the link above for an interview with Wang and more information about the record-setting run.

TalkBack / Billy Berghammer Retires From Planet GameCube.com
« on: April 17, 2003, 08:07:27 PM »
That's right folks, I'm outta here, and this is my last post.  Get the full story right here.

Attention Planet GameCube Community,

I’m officially announcing that today, April 18th,  2003, will be my last day with Planet GameCube.com.

While I’ve been running Planet GameCube for 4 years, it’s  been rather difficult to make a decent living.  I was recently offered a job to  work for Game Informer Magazine, and I have decided it’s a good time to pass the  torch on to someone else at Planet GameCube and take my career to the next  stage.

I went to college thinking I would go into psychology.  I  ended up graduating with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in  English.  At that time I was hardcore (note: music nerd) into alternative music  and really interested in radio, so I thought that would be fun.  I ended up  living a full career in radio.  I started this site in between radio jobs, but I  never would have imagined it would have led me into my new career.  It’s funny  how life turns out sometimes.

An ex-girlfriend of mine told me that this site would amount to nothing.  My  parents told me it was a waste of time. Most of my friends don’t get it at all  (they really aren’t gamers).  Personally, I never thought anything would happen  here either.  But the more people told me it was a waste, coupled with all the  challenges and struggles we faced, really made this a personal obsession.  Sure,  I still don’t know HTML that well (God bless FrontPage), and we’ve made some  mistakes here and there, but I think the current result isn’t too shabby.

Making this decision to leave was probably the hardest  thing I’ve ever had to do.  Doing this job everyday for over 4 years has been  one of the most fun and rewarding experiences that I’ve ever had in my  lifetime.  I’m not quite sure what it’s going to be like not rolling out of bed  every morning, firing up the PC, and hitting the morning news.  I think all work  environments should allow you to wear boxers and t-shirts and not have to take a  shower until about 6pm.  I really am going to miss it.  I’m going to miss being  at E3 with the staff this year; I’m going to miss the readers, trivia on Friday  nights, bullshitting with the staffers and readers at all times of the day…all  of it.  It’s been fun sharing my experiences and getting to be a total fanboy,  cultivating a community, and seeing how far you can actually take a hobby.  But  I think it’s time to move on.

While it is difficult for me to leave Planet GameCube, I am  really excited to take the next step.  The past couple months I’ve been getting  everything in place for my departure, and I did everything in my power to make  sure Planet GameCube has a secure future.  I’d like to thank the staff for their  hard work in making this transition as painless as possible.  Jonathan Metts  will be taking over as Director of Planet GameCube, and other people on staff  will be taking over the rest of my duties.  Planet GameCube will live on.  For  Christ’s sake, we survived the Internet drought, corporate screw-overs, server  problems, money problems, hackers, you name it.  I have faith in the staff that  we hired.  I still think I was blessed with the best and hardest working people  on the planet.  And remember folks, they all work for free.  So buy a shirt and DVD!  Support these guys!

Most of you out there probably think we live in some happy land that  gets everything it wants from Nintendo and all the companies that we deal with.   That couldn’t be further from the truth.  We have made great strides in the past  year or two (and we’re extremely thrilled and thankful), but in comparison to  the major corporate sites, no matter how big your numbers, it really doesn’t  matter.  We’ve had to fight for everything we’ve gotten.  I hope our support  from all these companies, and from you readers, continues to grow and expand in  the years to come.

Jonny, Rick, and Daniel are the core of the senior staff  and have a lot on their plates, but I think they can pull off the next leg in  the Planet GameCube journey.  The staff has a full load ahead of them, with E3  right around the corner.  They’ve got a lot of new stuff planned, and a bunch of  really good writers that they’re adding to the roster.  This website is capable  of amazing and wonderful things.  It’s kind of scary giving the keys to these  guys.  In a sense, I feel like I’m letting my child go to school for the first  time.  But I’d trust these people with my life.  They’ve been pretty much my  second family.  I think the staff and flavor (or flava as well call it) of  Planet GameCube is truly what has made this website stand out from the rest of  the pack.

A couple final thank yous are in order.  First and foremost  to my Mom, Dad, and my sister Stacy, thanks for dealing with the fact that I  love video games even though you don’t really understand and do not play games  at all,.  Thanks for all the quarters that cultivated this mess.  Your love and  support have not only allowed me to pull this off but have also helped me  achieve dreams that I never thought truly possible.

I’d like to thank my friends here in Minneapolis for constantly  dealing with my rantings about Nintendo or the industry, when I know damn well  you could care less when Mario Sunshine is releasing, or how awesome it is that  the Q will have a Game Boy Player.  Special thanks to my friend Ben, who takes  care of Louie on business trips and is primarily player two when I’m reviewing  games.  On that note, I’d like to thank Liquor Lyles for being the best goddamn  bar in Minneapolis with wonderful 2-for-1 drink specials, under whose influence  I often do said ranting with said friends.

Thanks to all the Team Nintendo Reps who’ve helped us with all our needs at E3  and events.  Super mad props to my boy Thom Leonard, who I’ve known since the  N64HQ days.  To all of our secret spies…well, on behalf of Louie the Cat, word  up to ya’ll.  Louie still needs you. J   Thanks for the love!  Oh yeah, by the way, I’m not firing Louie.  You may not  see Louie in pictures standing on every freaking piece of Nintendo hardware  anymore, but he’s gotta do something while I’m at work instead of crapping on my  keyboard.  And his second-favorite hobby is digging up rumors.

I’d like to thank all of our advertising partners who have  kept us alive, especially Video Game Advantage/Games For Rent, Video Game Depot,  X-Arcade, UGO, Play-Asia, and Lan Kwei.  Thank you for your support.

I’d like to thank all the staff of Golin Harris, especially  Tom Stratton, who has taken more **** from me than probably anyone in the  industry.  Thanks for all of your support and help man, you’ve really taught me  a lot, and you’ve been a great friend.

I’d like to thank Shigeru Miyamoto, everyone at Nintendo, and  third-parties, for sending us amazing hardware and games to write about.

I’d like to thank Steven Kent, Raymond Padilla, Scott  McCall, Mike Hrusecky, Yutaka Ochiboji, Justin Nation, Jonathan Metts, Rick  Powers, Ravi Hiranand, Denis Dyack, Max Lake, and Daniel Bloodworth for  inspiring me and pushing me to push the envelope.

I’d also like to thank everyone at Game Informer for being so accommodating, friendly, and welcoming.  You guys  are awesome, and I’m looking forward to working with you.

Last but definitely not least, I’d like to thank the wonderful Planet  GameCube Staff.  Thank you for your tireless effort towards making Planet  GameCube what it is today. From the people I’ve known for years, to the new guys  I just met this week, I love you all.  Keep on kickin’ ass. Keep the dream  alive!

And with that, I must say farewell.  It’s truly been an  honor and a privilege.

Word.
