TalkBack / Re: Konami Announces Contra Rebirth for WiiWare
« on: May 09, 2009, 08:09:52 PM »
"The last sequel to appear on a Nintendo system was Contra 3: The Alien Wars on the Super Nintendo in 1992."

Don't you mean "Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS in 2007"?

TalkBack / Re: Rapid Blogging Comes to Wii with Twiiter
« on: April 12, 2009, 04:25:08 PM »
"Rapid Blogging," huh?  Maybe with a USB keyboard.  I wouldn't exactly call using the Wii Remote pointer and an on-screen keyboard "rapid."  Not to mention the startup time for the Wii versus a phone or computer that's probably already on.  This project definitely seems more like "can we do it" than "should we do it."  ...but what the hell, I'm gonna register anyway.

Those had better be some kick-ass recipes to justify getting the DSi for them.  I really don't get the point, though.  It's not like there's any sort of hardware limitation that would prevent recipes from being shown, and once they're found out they're likely to end up on the internet anyway.

TalkBack / Re: This Week's (Final) Virtual Console and WiiWare
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:30:31 AM »
You might want to change the title.  I totally freaked out and thought they weren't going to be doing any more Virtual Console releases, when it really just means they're changing it so the name is no longer Wii specific since DSi stuff will be included.

TalkBack / Re: The Wii SD Card Menu: A Walkthrough
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:57:25 PM »
I'm going to download this update tonight after work, but I'm concerned about something: If I can't play saved games directly from the SD Card (still), then how do I PLAY VC/WW games that I buy and download to the SD Card? Do I still have to move them over to the Wii's sytem memory in order to play them?

I guess I don't understand how this new update makes the process any smoother, because it looks like I will still have to shuffle things around.

I think it keeps loading the save data from the Wii as usual, it just stores the program on the SD card.  Since you can move your large program files to the SD card, you'll have plenty of room to keep your save data on the Wii.

Also, a note for any Homebrew Channel users, make sure you update it before doing a system update.  I was too excited about loading stuff from the SD card that I didn't bother trying to update HBC beforehand, and for the time being, I can't update it.  I'll be stuck at 0.9 until they figure out another way to upgrade it.

TalkBack / Re: REVIEWS: New Play Control! Pikmin
« on: March 19, 2009, 05:03:49 PM »
I was hoping the review would have been done by someone who'd played the original so we could get a feel for how well the controls were adapted.  At least they seem to be good enough that a Pikmin newbie can get them figured out.

Personally, I loved REUC and was disappointed that RE2's scenario wasn't playable in it.  Since Leon's showing up for the RE2 stuff in this one, maybe they'll throw some RE4 in as well?  Or maybe even a scenario based on Degeneration?

You should buy the Jungle Beat remake, I want to know how it's different.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Evaluating New Wii Remote Motion Chip Manufacturers
« on: December 05, 2008, 09:57:36 AM »
More sensitive?  The current one isn't sensitive enough?  I have fond memories of putting down the Wii Remote so I could type a message to a friend, and upon picking the remote back up (not in a particularly forceful manner, I don't think) I ended up stabbing the merchant in RE4.

Unless they mean to say "more accurate," which I'm all for, although it seems that would not only lower the value of the current Wii Remotes, but possibly render the MotionPlus unnecessary.  (At least as far as functionality goes.  I don't doubt some games would come up with a message saying you need to attach one to play the game.)

Secret of Mana?  HELL YES!
Street Fighter 2?  Why do we need a FOURTH one?  Seriously.  Four Street Fighter 2s.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Points are Not Interchangeable
« on: October 08, 2008, 08:35:14 PM »
I can see how it'd be difficult for casual users to have a combined account for points that could be accessed by both the Wii and DS, but personally, I've got my Wii account tied to my My Nintendo account, which would make it feasible to connect the two...

Still, it's annoying that EVERYTHING has its own individual code instead of just using the system code for everything.

TalkBack / Re: Rock Band Wii DLC to be Distributed on Discs
« on: May 05, 2008, 09:24:04 PM »
But why the hell is an online console like the Wii getting denied online content?

My best guess would be the tiny amount of storage available in the console.  The other system has gigs of storage built in.  The Wii has, what, a gig or two?  Mine's already almost full with VC games and save data.  Yeah, they could make it save to a SD card, but the player would need to have one first.  With the discs, anybody who wants it can purchase it and use it.

Just being nit-picky here, but FFX went back to turn-based battles.

Either way, I'm really looking forward to this one.

TalkBack / Re: MYST Goes Gold, Release Set For May
« on: March 31, 2008, 11:39:18 PM »
"The DS version will feature the original MYST, as well as a brand new Age, the Rime Age. Introduced in the Real Myst re-release, the Rime Age includes an optimized interface for the DS touch screen and new tools such as a magnifying glass, a camera, a notebook, and a map."

This confuses me.  First, how is Rime brand new if it was introduced in RealMyst?  Has it been completely changed?

Also, the way this is written makes it sound like the new tools are available only in Rime instead of the whole game, and I'm pretty sure I've seen screenshots of the magnifying glass, notebook and map being used outside of Rime.

"The game takes full advantage of the DS' touch-screen technology, seamlessly incorporating new tools for a greater challenge."

Maybe it's just me but I don't see how being able to zoom in on stuff, take pictures, see how the Age is laid out, and take notes without searching for a pencil and paper will make the game harder...

And then it gets a 9.  ...what?

Why put a limit on it?  Yeah, it'd suck up the Wii's memory to have a lot of game saves on it, but isn't that what memory cards are for?  I mean, we're not using cartridges any more...

So, Contra and Gradius are ports of the arcade versions rather than the NES versions?  Because that would be pretty sweet.

I remember playing Lode Runner on an old Mac system and having a good bit of fun with it.  (Then again, I was probably 4 at the time...)  Never played the NES version, though.  Might be worth a shot...

Well, for someone who doesn't already have a good player, that'd be fantastic.  Right now all I've got is a cruddy little portable system (the video output comes from a 1/8" jack) and I'd gladly pay $20 to have my Wii play DVDs through component cables and with true 16:9 without having to use the TV's zoom feature, even if the Wii only outputs 480p.

Re: DVD playback.

Wouldn't it be possible for Nintendo to release a new channel or firmware update for DVD playback?  Or am I incorrect about the discs being DVD format?
