Got the game today and played it for a couple of hours. So far I am impressed with the game, the battle system is actually fun and interactive, which I prefer to the more traditional battle systems in RPGs. Visuals seem to be a mixed bag, the character models are kind of hideous, but the scenery and art style already look promising.  Voice acting is pretty good and it has an interesting story. Like I said though, I'm not too far into it, but so far I like what I've seen.

I wasn't really paying attention at the time, but how long did it take 3DS to start outselling the original DS models on a consistent basis?

Another rumor. The Xbox 720 to have 16 core CPU?

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/04/12/report-next-xbox-to-sport-a-16-core-cpu

Sounds a bit too extreme for a console (not to mention expensive!). I can't help but think that this may be a bit overkill if it is true, but we'll see.

Other than in style, how could you improve NSMB? That's the question people refuse to ask themselves.

More unique characters (instead of two generic toads), higher polygon models, and better animation would be a good start.  The problem with your question, though, is that the game's art style is at the heart of what's wrong with the way that game looks IMO.

If you're going to make a 2D game, make it the most gorgeous 2D game anyone's ever seen, with fluid and detailed animation and a great sense of style (such as Rayman Origins or WaveForward's A Boy & His Blob and Bloodrayne Betrayal).  The New Super Mario Bros. games just feel cheap and lazy to me whenever I look at them, lacking both Retro's boldness and the charm of the old 2D Mario games.  If the game had the sheer energy and creativity of DKCR or the sheer gorgeousness of something like a Trine 2 (both of which also use the "3D character on 2D plane" style), I would have probably liked the game a lot better with this concept.  But I really would have preferred a straight-up 2D Mario revival over the hybrid that Nintendo went with.

Have to agree, while I enjoyed NSMB for Wii, it was pretty uninspired visually in more ways then one, and was hardly pushing the Wii's hardware.

Games make the system.  Do you know what I'll always think of when I reflect on the Wii?  Struggling to play DKC Returns because Nintendo insisted on shoehorning some broken, unresponsive **** control scheme into every game because it was an effective marketing tool for rubes.  That's the Wii: potentially great games ruined by **** controls.  So I don't give a **** about this tablet nonsense.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think we need to worry quite as much about the tablet controller. The Tablet's gimmick is a touch screen, which could be annoying if games shoe horn that in where it isn't needed, but from having played the DS at least we can be sure the touch screen will be precise and not hit or miss like the wiimote and its waggle controller is.

But the real danger is there is more to the tablet controller than just a touch screen. Apparently it also has gyroscopes and accelerometers, and the E3 presentation last year demonstrated it being used to catch a baseball and things like that. I think this is the area we need to worry about, because this is where things can get really imprecise and wonky.

Another thing we should keep in mind is the Wiimote itself isn't actually dead, because again at E3 2011 they showed that all the Wii accessories we know and "love" will be forward compatible on the Wii U. So once again we may have to deal with that imprecise waggle instead of just doing a button press. But what makes me hopeful is that the Wiimote gimmick is old news now, so it doesn't need to be "proven" like it needed to be on the Wii, so that means developers don't have to shoe horn it into their games. Unfortunately, they still can and probably will in many cases, but at least there isn't the same pressure on them to do it this time.

The people who shoehorn it in will likely have games no one cares about. The competent developers will do what they feel works best for their game and their vision. People forget the PS3 has the six-axis motion capability, and while a couple top games used it to a detrimental effect (leading to Factor 5's destruction), the games that matter don't use it unnecessarily for the most part, or it can be turned off. Fact is this, the Wii U will be packaged with a tablet, which has all the functionality of a typical controller, with other features that can be used or not used. Developers no longer have to fear whether someone has, for example, a classic controller or not.

The tablet controller, and yes the Wii Mote provide OPTIONS which is NEVER a bad thing, especially when the initial obsession to use every feature wears off. Just look at the NIntendo DS when it first came out, developers felt the need to use most if not all the features, but after a year or so things calmed down, some games that could benefit from, let's say, the touch screen were crafted, while others that wouldn't were crafted with more traditional controls.

My guess is that the tablet controller will be beneficial most for a second display screen, and everything else will be based on a game to game decision by the creator and what their vision is. Perhaps one of the biggest blunders, arguably, NIntendo made with Wii was not including the classic controller with every console. I see none of those issues cropping up with Wii U.

Yeah emphasizing that gameplay is more important to them then getting into a "My system is more powerful then yours" battle of words, is a PR blunder of an epic magnitude. Not like developers who matter haven't said nothing but positive things about what they can do with the system. I'd think that is a more important battle to win then a statement about gameplay mattering more to them then visuals.

157
At least this time Ian the new controller isn't a 1 or the other type of thing. All the necessary functions are in this controller without having to resort to another controller that people may not have. I think more than anyone you are going to eat up the tablet when it comes out. If only for quicker weapon switches and a clean screen on the tv.

Yes. There is nothing that people deemed "offensive" about the tablet controller who actually held it. It is a pretty traditional controller, just with a touch capable screen. That to me sounds like a positive evolution as long as it isn't uncomfortable to hold. The Wii mote had issues, but it still provided for some ground breaking titles like Skyward Sword with its motion controls, despite what I might think of the overall game, the motion controls were great and added to my enjoyment, not subtracted from it.

Controllers and input methods always go through bumpy patches, just go back to the N64 controller or even the NES's original pad, and neither are a perfect controller (the N64 was limited and clunky at times with some games, and the NES wasn't that comfortable), in fact they are quite flawed compared to what we have now. Motion controls are still going to be apart of gaming in some form, maybe not on the level of the analog stick on the N64, but will always be there in some form. The Wii may have been a flawed system but it has many wonderful games that complement it as well.

Like the Wii U spec rumors, I think we have to take the PS4/Xbox Next rumors with a grain of salt.  I could see Sony or Microsoft deciding to attempt to lock out Used Games,  but I find it unlikely that both would make that same mistake, especially Sony given their severe financial woes of late. They really can't afford that sort of high-risk, grand-scale experiment right now.

I was pretty suspicious of the PS/Xbox next gen rumors, but over the course of the last two months there have been quotes splashed every other day on Gamespot by high-profile devs complaining about how bad used games are for the industry. It feels like the third parties are linking arms and putting the pressure on Sony/MS to move to an always-on DRM system or at the very least charge for access to used games. Which would be bogus and demonstrate the industry's continued confusion about what ownership is and what the nature of its product is. I think they're longer-term really itching to move to all-digital-download, so they can hack up games to their hearts desire and sell them piece by piece.

Nintendo might luck into a superior market position this time around by being a generation behind as far as shiesty business practices go.

We'll see, I still don't think Sony and MS are going to be that dumb regardless of the rumors. It just seems like suicide for either of them to restrict used games.

I'm pretty sure RE6 will be released on the WII U and the only reason why Capcom hasn't announced it yet it because of the "non-disclosure" agreements set up in place.

Considering that Ubisoft has already announced Assassin's Creed 3 for Wii U (as well as Sega with Aliens: Colonial Marines and THQ with Darksiders 2), I find it unlikely that there are NDAs blocking Capcom from announcing this.

True, though if RE6 for Wii U has exclusive features it may be under NDA. Nintendo and Capcom have worked together in the past, so it isn't out of the question. I would hope Nintendo would be working out some exclusives with developers, even if it isn't a full game, but features or content exclusive to the system.

Tough to say though, Capcom may genuinely be focused on PS3/360 development and work on porting it at a later time.

160
3DS, despite what they may have focused on in the beginning is doing quite well for itself with a bunch of A+++ games with even more in the wing. The Wii U is still probably 6 months or more from release, and it is unfair to judge them focusing on the tablet back almost a year ago! Like it or not, the tablet is a positive selling point for the Wii U, and so early on in a console's unveiling, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pushing that feature, especially since the big games were likely not ready to be shown.

Every console in history has some feature they tout, including Sony and MS who love touting all the multimedia features a system can do. I fail to see how that is much different from Nintendo showing off something that will actually impact how games are played on their system. In fact, I'd argue it is more relevant. The primary difference is that Nintendo is usually not willing to show trailers for games that aren't ready to show, unlike Sony and MS who do enjoy their CGI teaser trailers. There is nothing wrong with what Sony and MS do, but on the flip side there is nothing wrong with what Nintendo's philosophy has ALWAYS been as well.

Whine and complain all one wants about Nintendo showing off a new controller, but at least their focus has always been on the heart of a gaming system, which is gaming which is the focus of any new input method, even if it may be flawed. Nintendo does their own thing and doesn't get caught up in the modern day leap frog of showing games long before they are ready to be shown, by videos that may be not representative of the final product.

Also we are getting heavily into the laws of diminishing returns this generation. The focus is likely going to shift to things other then the game visuals, such physics and AI. And even that is going to run into a cap because of this thing called financial resources and development costs. As someone who plays PC games, my old Radeon 4870 X2 card still manages to keep up quite well with most newer games, including games made exclusively for PC, on high settings as well. For the first time ever I have been in no rush to upgrade any of my components in my desktop. The only reason why I'll likely have to upgrade the graphics card is because mine is showing signs of dieing completely.

Not to say there aren't still places where gaming "power" can take things, but that wall appears closer now, then it ever has been before, especially due to the limits of even HD televisions. I think this last generation will be one of the first where games hardly look "ugly" in comparison to next generation games.

Whatever happens this next generation should be more interesting then others to see what truly separates the gaming consoles when it comes to the games themselves in the visuals/physics/AI/etc department. I don't think any of us really know what will happen, especially when you consider that development costs are already putting major strain on developers, and with game sales lagging overall, it may really impact this next generation.

This is way over-blown. Nintendo doesn't have to do anything. They don't have to please hardcore fans with numbers and specs because their opinion doesn't matter. It's third party opinions that matter and from what I've heard, the Wii U is a great console.

This!

The 3rd party developers that matter (including many who wouldn't even touch Wii) are happy with the system on various levels. Fact is that even if Nintendo had a system, like the writer of this article stated, that could run circles around Xbox 720 and PS4, they wouldn't hype it either. We have to realize one thing, Nintendo has ALWAYS been a company that isn't huge into tech demos and rendered trailers, even if they do have them from time to time (like the Zelda Wii U tech demo), they care only about how the game plays and usually wait until they can show it in a playable state visually. How often have Sony and MS had game trailers with all CGI visuals, while Nintendo, holds off until they can show the game in a playable state and how it REALLY looks? Yeah, that has been common since the N64 days.

Nintendo has always been good about setting realistic expectations and focusing on not the hardware under the hood, but how the games play. I think Wii U will be fine in the end, we must also take into account that a systems "power" isn't always clear either because of various focuses in the hardware architecture and parts (such as maybe having a lot of RAM but the processor being under powered or any other contrasting hardware choices).

There is one thing I can pretty much guarantee though, you won't see close to the same gap we had with Wii and PS3/360, and I don't just mean the visuals, but everything else in the game such as AI.

Yeah, who needs RE6 when you can have Resident Evil Snap, the next-gen on-rails photography game (hey, that Tablet has to be good for something) where you try to take the best pictures of various Resident Evil abominations?  ;)

That actually sounds pretty awesome. Especially if they have nice HD rotatable camera modes of Jill... or Rebecca.... Sheva... mmmm.....
All that aside, the two Chronicles games were great. I'm actually finishing the last of the Darkside Chronicles titles at the moment.

Definitely sounds like a great RE game, so here is hoping Capcom does it, especially after playing RE5 which I thought was sub-par at best. It really is hard for me to get excited for a mainline RE game anymore after that. Anyway, in all seriousness, hopefully all Capcom is doing is avoiding formerly announcing the title until a future time. I don't see why it wouldn't come out on Wii U, if I recall RE games do sell decently on Nintendo systems.

163
Adrock, those anonymous rumors in and of themselves weren't a big deal and were easy to brush off. What made them most troubling was how Nintendo reacted to them. Instead of denying them, Nintendo seemed to get defensive about it and said "we care more about gameplay than technical specs". That's the thing which has raised some red flags.

Isn't that how they usually try to spin things? Nintendo, at least since the GC era (I don't even recall them bragging about the hardware of the GC) has emphasized gameplay over visuals even if the visuals are still apart of the package. Sometimes they come across as having more pride and focus over the true heart of a game, the gameplay, rather then visuals, always have.

Or the statement could have easily been more of a PR mistake. Either way there are lots of explanations other then them trying to cover up a severely underpowered system.

164
I honestly think a lot of it is there isn't much engaging Nintendo news really at the moment.  This is how it is right before an E3 that we know will be huge.  I think things will become better again when we have WiiU and like.

Probably the most likely reason, when new is slow people will jump on any little bit of information, even if it is just a rumor. At the moment I put the most stock in what Nintendo has said, and what non-anonymous developers have said. Everything else is rumor and speculation, though sometimes speculation can be fun to discuss as well.

So RE6 had the curtain pulled back today and that it will not be available for the Wii U at the moment. Seems odd they aren't porting it to Wii U, I wonder if maybe it will be an E3 announcement that it is coming to Wii U. I just can't believe they'd ignore the Wii U as a platform to release it on. From what I understand Resident Evil Revelations has done pretty well on 3DS, so, if true, it does indicate Nintendo system owners are interested in the series.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/122/1222650p1.html

To be fair, RE6 was officially announced a couple months ago.  It was originally announced for a November 20, 2012 release for PS3, 360 and PC.  However, this Capcom Captivate presentation in Italy that you are referring to shows a release date of October 2, 2012 now.  With a 10.2.12 release date, a WiiU release is most likely off the table.  I could still see a port coming to the WiiU with the map & item selection moved to the tablet at some point in 2013.  I could even see a port of RE5 & 6 together, maybe even a super package with RE4HD, RECVHD and RE5 & RE6 all in one go.  SO just because they say no WiiU version at this time doesn't mean it isn't being worked on, especially if the rumored 11.16.12 WiiU launch date comes true.

I know it was announced a couple months ago, but they if I recall little was known about how it would play, now they've pulled the curtain back on it.

166
Well my order was placed for it, I am getting really excited to play the game!

My only hope is that, like Chozo said, that Nintendo isn't too conservative this next generation. I honestly don't expect the system to be leaps and bounds better then PS3 or 360, but I do expect it to be more powerful even if it is by a slim margin. Honestly I don't expect ports to be significantly affected even if Wii U is just a small percentage more powerful then 360 and PS3. The industry is starting to hit a wall, not just with significant visual jumps but, more importantly, the cost of game development.

You will not see the difference you seen between PS3/360 and Wii, no matter how powerful (or underpowered) the Wii U is.

169
They have it at Gamestop's Online store again or are you getting it for the Bundle?

Mainly want to compare the total cost between them.

170
I think people just have gotten cynical. I honestly don't take much stock in the anonymous comments in regards its power, but a part of me can't help be a little worried considering how the Wii turned out power wise. On the flip side though there are people, like Epic, that have been saying positive things about the hardware's ability and they were hardly a fan of the Wii's power.

The thing everyone has to remember is the situation Nintendo was in when making the Wii and the Wii U is completely different.  The number one reason the Wii was as underpowered as it was is because the Gamecube was Nintendo's worst selling home console and Nintendo worried that their presence in the home console market was dying.  The whole point of the Wii was to see if they could do something radically different to try and become popular again, but in a way that wouldn't sink the company if it failed.  This is why the Wii was just a Gamecube with more RAM because if the system only sold 10 million units, the losses would be very minimal compared to what a way more powerful systems losses would be.  And in 2005, there was a real chance Nintendo's next system could have only sold 10 million or less.

These were the sales of Nintendo's home consoles before the Wii.

NES - 61 million

SNES - 49 million

N64 - 33 million

Gamecube - 22 million

Seriously, Nintendo didn't have a time machine in 2005 when they were making the Wii.  They had no idea the Wii would be as popular as it did.  If Nintendo had released the Wii with power similar to the 360/PS3 and it only sold 10 million units, it would have been a disaster that would have cost Nintendo billions of dollars.  People have to remember that Nintendo's home console brand had been severally weakened during the Gamecube era and so there's a reason Nintendo wasn't willing to risk a lot of money on their next home console because they worried it might do worse then the Gamecube.

For the Wii U though, it'll be the successer to the Wii which is Nintendo best selling home console by far.  By the time the Wii U comes out, the Wii will have sold around 100 million units, with it's top selling games managed to sell over 20-30 million copies each.  The Wii completely revitalized Nintendo's home console presence and made it stronger then ever, which is why Nintendo can afford to actually make the Wii U a more powerful system this time because the risks with the Wii U are way less then the risk with the Wii were.

Fair point, and yeah I do realize it was likely necessary for Nintendo to do what they did with the Wii. I just think the more "core" gamer like those who are on this board are just a bit gun shy about it though. Wii U will probably be just fine, even if some of us may be kind of gun shy with some of the rumors floating around.

171
So here I go to finally get the game, now that I finally have the cash, at the Nintendo Online Store, and the website is down. Maybe that is a sign I shouldn't get it.  ::)

172
No real offense to people who are actually putting stock in the rumors(because I am just as guilty of getting excited over the good rumors) but some of you people are just sheep.

It's like when you watch the news and you hear "New study says if you take 1 fish oil pill a day, your risk of heart diseases will be lower." Fast forward 1 year later "New study says if you take 1 fish oil pill a day, your risk of heart diseases will be higher." And people just go "oh me of my!" They have no idea what is true! When all that technical jargon is being thrown at us, the majority of the time we can only take some scientists word for it. Even the reporters reporting on it and the whole darn news crew don't even know whats truly up. You can't just get frantic every time you hear some new rumor, because how the hell do you honestly know? Following random literal nobodies like it's gospel? Come on now!

The difference between the fish oil analogy and the Nintendo rumors is that we have actual facts and product to go by  to do actual research ourselves! Quit acting like you aint got no god damn sense! I can look at Aliens, Darksiders, that Ghost Recon, and even the word of Ubisoft who say's Assassins Creed 3 won't look any different on the Wii U and I can make my on intelligent assessment of the situation. Who has gone on record to say bad things about the Wii U other than analysts? Which developer who has even the oldest kits(assuming) has said it doesn't perform as well as the PS360? Weren't the first things we were hearing long time ago was that it was structured like a 360 so porting games was very easy?

I think people just have gotten cynical. I honestly don't take much stock in the anonymous comments in regards its power, but a part of me can't help be a little worried considering how the Wii turned out power wise. On the flip side though there are people, like Epic, that have been saying positive things about the hardware's ability and they were hardly a fan of the Wii's power.

173
The lack of true Pokemon RPGs on a home console system does bother me. I'd love to have them do one, if Game Freak is uncomfortable doing it, I'd give it to Monolith Soft to develop.
Monolith Soft would make an awesomely epic Pokemon MMO.

I really want to see Monolith be successful with Nintendo, while I haven't played it, Xenoblade sounds like one of the best RPGs around, not just on Wii. With the Pokemon name you know it would sell amazing, people could care less who developed it as long as it appears to be a mainline Pokemon game.

174
In actual fact, this huge profit is probably the reason why Nintendo would once again make a limp wristed system.  They made a toybox with a CPU for nigh on free, slapped a Wii badge on it sold it for a (knowing Nintendo probably substantial) profit and watched their bank account exponentially grow.  Why not do the same thing again?

As long as the dollars roll in, who cares about the loyal followers who were there through the hard times.  If the average joe will pay them for toybox 0.5 with a shiny new gimmick than thats fine.

That is what worries me the most.  We keep hearing that the true follower is getting looked after, but nothing ever materializes except for the expected sequels.
Oh I agree here.  I got bored and fed up with the Wii 3 years ago.  Yes, I've bought the occasional game here or there, but nothing like what I buy for the PS3 or PC.

I've always bought the Nintendo system each generation first.  This time, I am definitely waiting, especially if the system is only slightly more powerful than the PS360.

I'm afraid Nintendo will only think about their profit margins and try to cater once again only to the "casual" demographic.  I'm worried they will still leave things out of the WiiU that are standard with the PS360 because it wouldn't benefit them monetarily.  I'm worried they will gimp the system to make sure they make a profit at launch on the system itself.

I'm also worried they'll never release a true Pokemon MMO for a home console (though I've only bought one Pokemon game, the original Blue).

But I'd still like to make money like they do, even when they are considered a failure.  The GC was the worst selling system for them and that generation, yet they made more money than Sony and M$ during those years (partly because of the GBA, but they weren't losing money on the GC either).

The lack of true Pokemon RPGs on a home console system does bother me. I'd love to have them do one, if Game Freak is uncomfortable doing it, I'd give it to Monolith Soft to develop.

175
But why is their past more important than what they showed last year at E3 and what people who have no reason to want to be kind to Nintendo have to say? Granted, talk is cheap, but everything we've seen and pretty much everything anyone who's actually played the thing or seen it in action has said indicates that Nintendo did this right.

Which is more likely: some random anonymous accusation, or the opinion of Mark Rein, a man who consistently went out of his way to criticize the Wii? Were all the demos we saw at E3 last year faked, when Nintendo has no history of that? Lots of actual developers have gone on record saying it's a step up from the current systems; are you suggesting there's some kind of pro-Nintendo conspiracy going on here?

That is probably the only thing that gives me hope, I don't put much stock in anonymous developers because they can range for being pure fabrications, to having older development kits (which supposedly were under-powered if I recall, but have since improved). Individuals with experience in getting the most out of hardware have nothing but positive things to say about it, including Epic Games.

I just worry about the cost of parts, unless Nintendo managed to get some kind of deal on it. One thing I want to confirm is if this rumor for $180 just for the console itself or the controller and console? If it is just for the console that sounds fine to me.
