Granted the Cube has a bad reputation (quite unnecessary IMO) but I think one of Nintendo's strong suits is that continue to support a system even if it is struggling. There are still good to great games coming out for it.

Perhaps I am missing something in Ian's comment, but what in the world is the big deal about DS struggling game wise, the first six months (though some of the games along with the system sold quite well). Most new systems (ESPECIALLY HANDHELDS) struggle for a few months before they find their way, the DS was a completely new concept to handheld gaming so of course there was a small dry spell, it was bound to happen especially with Nintendo pushing it out for christmas.

Nintendo Gaming / Is it right to compare NDS and PSP?
« on: January 25, 2006, 06:53:39 PM »
I know people are really focused on the NDS vs PSP in sales, but really is it fair to compare the two? The NDS is basically a gaming system, with few other "extras", while the PSP is more of a handheld multimedia system that also plays games, it is more for the technology geeks than it is for gamers (not to say it doesn't have some good games!). It is my opinion that the PSP should be in another category by itself, just look at all the VMD movies on the shelves as compared to games.

Some don't want Ganon? You can't have a great Zelda game without Ganon . That is like Mario without Bowser, it just wouldn't feel right (which is probaly why I disliked Majora's Mask so much).

Sadly I tried the same thing and nothing, after which I discovered that it is no longer available. So I don't know how either of us are going to get the present!

We have to realize that most companies only have 1 or 2 "killer app franchises", while Nintendo has multiple ones, in addition to the constant creation of new ones like Advance Wars, Animal Crossing, Pikmin along with others. The problem with Nintendo's sales have nothing to do with their personal franchises, but their image, and lack of other choices. It is tough to sell systems when you are the only one making worthwhile games for it, it is a fact that gamers like variety. Anyway on a side note, I really wouldn't call Halo as a game bringing something new to the table , it is basically a copy of much better PC FPS. I would go over some of the other choices for "new to the table" games, but I don't feel like. Let's just say I feel alot of those games mentioned are what is causing gaming to stagnate, and proof that gamers are easily impressed now days .

I still don't believe Nintendo is going "Lower the barrier" on their games, I think NDS is a good indication of what is to come with Revolution, and we have a mixture of games there. Really I don't think much is going to change from the Nintendo of the past, except for their marketing stance, and the complexity of their controller. They still will be one of the most innovative companies around, coming out with great games that all can enjoy. Not only will the Revolution have games for current Nintendo fans, but they will have games for those who hardly ever touch them. It is a strategy that really isn't new, since there are many games for previous Nintendo systems that did just that, the only change here is that they may market the Revolution as an all inclusive system due to the simple controller.

Regardless of my confusion on displacement mapping, I feel we will all be fairly impressed by the graphical output of the Revolution.

I don't recall N64 being a flop, sure it didn't sell as many as PS1 but it still did quite well when it came to game sales. Not only that but it kicked off digital sticks on controllers, if it wasn't for Nintendo being, what Ian calls "Niche" then we would probaly still be playing games with a digital pad.

Not including the nunchuck attachment? That would be suicide for Nintendo, since there will be some games that require an analog stick to further immerse the player. I still believe not only will the nunchuck be included but also the shell. Unlike others I would be happy if the 300$ price point was legit, in that it indicates the Revolution isn't as skimpy hardware wise as the rumours have stated.

I can confirm both N64 and GC were 199.99, mainly because I remember them at that price . I personally hope the system is around 300$ because that could indicate that the technology is not as underpowered as many seem to think.

Yep Nintendo is very out of touch and quite stupid to boot, just look at the NDS. What a FAILURE, they should have stuck with the traditional GB because the public will not except a console aimed at innovating handhelds and attracting those who may not otherwise play games.

I don't see how this is bad news for Nintendo, if the portable market is doing so well (especially DS) that indicates that their casual or "non-gamer" strategy is working. Let's face it, portable gaming is more pick up and play for a short while, it isn't a "hardcore" gamer system. With that said, I do think people are overreacting a bit about Nintendo's "non-gamer" strategy, since I think the DS is a perfect example of it in use since the DS is all about simplicity in controls and a wide variety games for everyone. Games like Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing, Wario Ware Touched, Nintendogs, are all for those that don't like the complex button scheme and who may not play games otherwise (I know my mom loves Mario Kart). THose that complain or worry about Nintendo's strategy should not worry! NDS is obviously a first glimpse into Nintendo's revolution strategy (innovative, wide variety of games for all types of gamers), and it has been a sucess worldwide due to the wide range of games. I see no reason why Revolution will not follow suit!

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Comments on DS Redesign Rumors
« on: January 13, 2006, 09:26:54 AM »
I really doubt people will take the wait and see approach to redesigned Nintendo handhelds. It has yet to happen and redesigns are NOTHING new to Nintendo's handhelds. The new redesigns usually sell just as well as the old designs, in fact the only redesign that I can remember that didn't go over too well was the GB Micro, and even that was a huge failure. People will always have the mentality about getting something early even though it may have flaws, whether it be design or games!

Wait a second, DS is doing poorly in North America? The last time I checked 4 million or so was not bad, especially taking in the fact that games like Animal Crossing have been sold out for awhile.

It is funny because this is the first year EVER, where I've been more excited for handheld (NDS) games than any of the other consoles. It has been a great year for me, and my NDS has been getting alot of play time the last few months.

Compared to the PC market the PS2 is filled to the brim with innovation.

Like what? I hate when people use arguments like "Well I have a ton of reasons", all I want is some examples of unique and FUN games. None of the big name games are innovative, except for a couple like Shadow of the Collossus and Ico (though even they weren't big). All I see on the PS2 is a bunch of RPGs, ports, mainstream series like FF, MGS, GTA and racing games none of which I care about (I buy all the ports for Xbox). My PS2 gathered dust for 1 year because of the lack of games that I cared about that were solely on PS2.

I find it quite sad that a basic rehash of GTA3 is selling so well on PSP. Shows how hurting the PSP is for good games that are not quick rehashes or ports.

I have to agree with Ian on that, you don't buy a system for Nintendo games, you buy it for games. If this boils down to "Nintendo or the rest of the industry" I wouldn't side with Nintendo. I bought the Cube because I wanted games that differ from what I played on the PC. Ended up buying a PS2 because the Cube didn't offer enough. Now I'm no longer even really looking at the GC shelf in stores because I know there are no really interesting games coming out for the system anymore. The PS2 on the other hand is getting lots of support. I have bought two Cube games this year and the system is gathering dust most of the time. That shouldn't happen. And that's the problem if you have only Nintendo giving the platform any real support.

That is funny, for me it is the other way around. In fact I sold my PS2 because of the lack of unique or even fun games, all I see when I go to the PS2 section is alot of mainstream games like GTA, which I really do not care about. The only game I care to play for it is SoC, but I am not buying a PS2 just for one game.

Ah, I am one of those that buys each MP iteration, it is great fun to bring it over to my moms (who actually enjoys the series) and play the game. Even though each game doesn't include much new, there are enough new mini games and alterations to keep the party going!

Great news, though I wasn't really worried about SSB Revolution before the news. Nintendo has some of the best game designers around, and I'm sure they could have created a stellar game regardless. But this is still a bonus .

Another positive that I don't see mentioned here, is the longer Nintendo waits the cheaper the technology will be. Granted they can't wait forever, but even a few month delay can mean cheaper and more powerful technology.
