MDK2 always seemed like a poorly thought out port to Wiiware anyway. They knew the memory restrictions and Nintendo's policy going into it (at least I hope they did). My hope is that the Wii U service will be on the level of PS3 and Xbox when it comes to not just interface, but allowing the developers flexibility in how large they want the game to be without having to sacrifice quality.

We complain that Nintendo systems don't launch with Mario games anymore, and now we're up in arms about a side-scrolling Mario game likely at the system's launch and we're disappointed.

Man, Nintendo fans really are hard to please...

Considering the 2-D Mario games have been shells of the SNES/NES games, it is kind of hard to get hyped for yet another Mario game. Nintendo has yet to wow me at all with the NSMB games, NSMB Wii was a big step up from the DS one, but still was lacking. Was it fun? Yes. Was it memorable in the slightest? No, not really beyond maybe the final boss battle.

Now if the game has become a new 3-D Platformer or shfted to a more spirte based/hand drawn look, I would get excited.

You know what would be an okay hook? Comes with the console for free.

If it is a pack in game, that would be fine. My fear is that if they do include it, the system will be more then the possible $300 price point and it will be used to justify a higher price (kind of like how the Wii was priced $50 more, give or take, from the Japanese price point which didn't include Wii Sports).

The 3D polygon models are used because it is easier and cheaper to make a game with them.  It is easy to add new textures to existing models and add effects to make the game look nicer.

We knew Nintendo was doing this for some time, as Nintendo set up artists that were just making 3D models of their characters to be used in games.  I think this was mostly done for the Mario series of games...Party, and New Super Mario games.

Although I don't like it...it makes sense.  I personally don't understand why they won't just use Cell shading to make these 3D models look like HD sprites.

That would be a fair compromise. I understand the reason for the polygons, doesn't mean I have to like them though. The way Mario games sell, Nintendo could afford to put a little more resources into the games. One thing that bothers me about NIntendo lately, especially with the Mario games, is that they seem to constantly cheap out and get lazy with them, specifically the NSMB series.

Also in regards to Nintendo owning properties, they own Xenoblade since they own Monolith Soft.

Fair, but the main Mario games DO get those extra resources.  The Mario Galaxies and Mario Karts always get new resources used.  It is the minor Mario games...the Mario Tennis, Mario Party franchises that tend to use those polygon pre-made models...which is honestly completely ok with me.

I dunno, the NSMB games are pretty major and seem to have corners cut often.

Yeah, this is a buzz-kill. I think with the inclusion of the Miis and the dispiritingly bland art design, the "New" series falls out of the realm of the "real" Mario continuum and becomes something of a Mario Party-esque spin-off.

The trouble is they don't seem to be making "real" 2-D Mario games anymore . . .

Yeah, I would be extremely hyped for a "real" 2-D Mario game (if you are referencing the sprite based visuals and design). It is like the NSMB series has lost the diversity and unique style of the 2D Mario games from SNES and NES. Besides SMB2J, every Mario game has had a fresh visual look to it, with Yoshi's Island being one of the most unique.

So where are all the people who shrieked all over the Wii U threads that the "New Super Mario Bros. Mii" game shown at E3 was "just a tech demo, not actual software"?  :P: Well, if it's just going to be bland New Super Mario Bros. with Miis this time, I see no reason to pick it up even if I do get a Wii U.  When you combine "bland" (the New Super Mario Bros. level design and art style" with even more "bland" (the Miis), I don't see how you could possibly get "superb".

Hate to say it, but I have to agree. My excitement for the game just dwindled to "Maybe I'll get it a year or two after it is released, used if I can find it cheap". Maybe Nintendo will still shock us with another Mario game, or it has changed so much that it is unrecognizable from the Wii U demo.

I've never played Halo so I don't understand the appeal, but isn't it basically the same thing more or less as Metroid Prime? The only thing different that Halo had going for it was that it was on a "mature" console.
Okay, that explains a lot. Metroid and Halo aren't even close. Halo is a shooter, an action game. Metroid is more about exploration and adventure. Metroid can't have the same reach as Halo unless Nintendo completely redefines the series. It was created as a single player game. The draw of Halo is its multiplayer though many like it for its mythos. Retro Studios tried adding multiplayer and it didn't work. NST made a primarily multiplayer Metroid with Hunters and it barely felt like a Metroid game. Metroid needs to stick to being Metroid and evolve from there. I don't think its gameplay lends itself to being anything more than it is, a great single player experience.

Yeah, comparing the two is ridiculous, beyond first person they are completely different games. Halo is pretty much run n gun, while Metroid is more of an adventure/puzzle solving game. I doubt Metroid will ever become a big franchise unless Nintendo completely changes everything that Metroid is, like making it a run n gun shooter ::shudders::.

The game better be amazing, it has been in development long enough. I remember people predicting it would be shown at E3 the last 2 or 3 E3s.

I think it will be something different from the Super Mario Mii game, at least I hope it is something different. Can't say I'm horrible excited for a Mario game that has been Miized, not to mention the NSMB style hasn't impressed me that much.

I would love to see a new Mario game done like Wario Land: Shake It, with the hand drawn looking visuals. Kind of a retro throwback to the SNES/NES Mario titles.
Visually, I wouldn't mind this. However, Wario Land: Shake It separated the levels into "rooms" which I didn't like. If Nintendo or whoever handled the game could get the levels to be continuous (minus warp pipes) then I'd be all for the HD hand-drawn look.

Still, if Nintendo would put some effort into the art design, they could get a lot out of using polygons. I suggested a 2.5D Mario game a few months back where every world represented a different Mario game and adopted that game's art style but using 3D polygonal models.

I mean more the look of things, rather then how Wario Land played. The 2D Polygonal Mario games seem kind of lazily put together lately, especially when it comes borrowing assets from Galaxy or other 3D Mario games ( (the first New Super Mario Bros being one of the worse examples of this), so if they could create something fresh visually, unique for the game I could see a polygon game being better visually. Still I'd prefer a hand drawn look.

Here's a juicy rumor for you guys and gals. We're hearing that Square-Enix may have worked some sort of deal with Nintendo to share a character or characters for use in a game project. We don't know what Square-Enix characters these are, but apparently they haven't been used in a very, very long time. Is Square-Enix looking to revamp a forgotten series/character with Nintendo's help?

I certainly don't believe it, but it would be nice to think Geno is getting a shot at Smash Bros.

Would be nice if true, I would love to see a true sequel to SMRPG in my perfect world.

I absolutely want the 1st Mario game on Wii U to be a 2D game, just not New Super Mario Bros. That's probably wishful thinking. The more I think about it the more I dislike the art direction. It's too bright and, frankly, quite awful. In terms of gameplay, sticking with that formula through a 3rd game is likely pushing it. It's bound to get old.

Blaming Nintendo is definitely a stretch, though I do understand where they are coming from even if it is a poor argument. 360 and PS3 both have decent sized chunks of the industry, and if the truth be told they were the ones sustaining most of the sales the previous years since most Wii titles that sold well were Nintendo published. You would maybe see a couple of Wii games in the sales charts, most were 360 and PS3 games if I recall correctly, so it honestly makes no sense.

Hardware sales are approaching their peak with willing buyers as well. Wii has sold millions upon millions in the U.S., and has pretty much reached market saturation.

Cut the Rope has you use two fingers to cut ropes simultaneously.

A shitty iPhone game requires it? That's a reason? God, I hope Nintendo don't included multi-touch so all the horrible iPhone games don't start getting ported over.

HEY! Cut The Rope is a very good game! >:^(

Thanks for the suggestion, I bought it from the app store last night after reading the praise for it. I can see the game designed without multi touch though, but still a wonderful little game.

141
But is it a Multi-Touch screen? Will it be able to play all iPad games?

If I recall the one shown did NOT have multi touch. Who knows if that has changed. I don't recall playing any games on iPhone that use the multi touch feature of the pad for anything other then simulated touch controls, which are unnecessary for Wii U since it has actual buttons. Not to say they aren't out there, but every game I've played, that has it, could easily use physical buttons instead.

I guess my point is how necessary is multi touch support? It would be nice to have, but it depends on the expense incurred by adding it.

I think Wii Sports 2 would be a little bit of a cop-out.

You mean Wii Sports 3, right? Wii Sports Resort is basically "Wii Sports 2". And I really really hate the term "hardcore / core gamer". It's a meaningless label that was perpetuated by the gaming media to differentiate us from casual gamers.

I'm a mainstream gamer, yet I love Wii Sports and WS Resort. I enjoy the Wii Sports games for their simplicity and charm, just like I enjoy Super Mario games for their hop-n-bop action, Metroid for it's sense of isolation on a desolate planet, Zelda for it's adventure and dungeons, etc.

Agree, but I don't think a Wii Sports title will be used to launch Wii U, they will want something that takes advantage of the new Umote, which would not work well at all for a Wii Sports title. I think it is going to be a more traditional title that will use the Umote in a way they feel enhances the title. People can say what they want about Wii Sports, but it was an important title to showcase what Wii could potentially do, kind of like SM64 was used to showcase how the analog stick would change things. The Wii U needs to have something similar, whether it be a casual game (I doubt it) or a more traditional title.

Also note I don't think of casual gaming as something bad, I just think of it as more as a reference to a game that is more "Pick up and play for short bursts" especially with other people.

Isn't there a new Star Trek game being done to go along with the next movie?  It's more of an actiony shooter thing though. :(  An original game developed for the Wii U would be quite awesome.  Something more exploring or just adventurous would be nice.  So many things they could do with the tablet controller.  I guess that goes along with several games/franchises though.. So much promise, if only..

Then again I thought Motion Controls would make for a really great Harry Potter game, and that sure didn't really manifest itself either in a good product. But maybe a daring developer will try something with Star Trek that utilizes the Wii U Controller.

If Draw Something doesn't get ported to WiiWare (and integrate with all of the other versions), then you don't even wanna know what I will do...

YES! Also a Star Trek game would be amazing as well.

Wii 2 sounds fine if there is a name change, and want to keep the Wii brand.

Actually it's 1.5 weeks, came out on a friday.  Didn't really fly off the shevles but that's kinda expected since the series was always more cult based but hopefully word of mouth gives the game a couple of years of growth.

Nothing really flew off the shelves this last month, it was an extremely slow month. 100+ thousand for 1.5 weeks of sales is nothing to brush away, especially on a system still early in its install base.

Probably similar to RE2, the game is a classic, but play it now and, well, it just doesn't hold up well at all. I honestly haven't played a SH game since SH3, but have been interested in games like Homecoming, Silent Hill for Wii, and even this game. Would be interested to try them considering I really don't have any expectations either way.

IMO, all the Silent Hill games are good in their own way (except maybe Origins, but I really didn't get far enough into that game to judge it too much).  Homecoming gets a lot of criticism for being stylistically similar to the movie (which I thought was pretty good) and for having a big combat focus, but I thought the story was pretty good (if very derivative of a few other SH games) and the combat was fairly enjoyable.  Shattered Memories (the Wii game) has some frustrating chase sequences and I never thought it was particularly creepy, but the psychological angle of the story and the general flow is pretty good.  Continuing the theme, Downpour doesn't have a fantastic combat system, but it's still far more of a horror game than Resident Evil has been in a very long time and I enjoyed the story and the creativity of several sequences.

Well when I get a chance I'll check out Downpour and Homecoming (any particular one you prefer?).

It's not just IGN, the game has a 64/68 (PS3/360) average on Metacritic.

I was speaking of critics in general (though a fairly above-average score is better than I expected).  People just did not give that game a fair chance, mostly because everyone likes to remember Silent Hill 2 as this perfect experience it never was.  I replayed it recently in the HD Collection, and man is that game ****.  And that's not a recent impression created by the HD version.  I always thought that was a terrible "game" with horrible combat, little to no direction, uninspired level design, and atrocious voice acting in its original incarnation (the new dub is a massive improvement).  But people like the story and characters, and that has made people forget just how terrible that game plays.  And I could say that of most of the Silent Hill games.

Probably similar to RE2, the game is a classic, but play it now and, well, it just doesn't hold up well at all. I honestly haven't played a SH game since SH3, but have been interested in games like Homecoming, Silent Hill for Wii, and even this game.
