The N64 suffered a horrible shortage of controllers.

Hopefully controllers aren't nearly as hard to find this time since I think that could hurt Wii's perception, since, well it is being advertised as system we play together.

I have a serious one hope it isn't too complex:

Can the Wii controller be used for 1:1 motion?
Can the Wii sensor read 3D depth and movement? Is it like a 3D mouse? If not why did Nintendo say that it could?

12103
Perhaps the reason for Nintendo releasing the Wii so late is because 3rd parties like Ubi Soft needed more time to polish their games? That wouuld be a good enough reason for me and I would not be surprised if that was a relatively big factor in the descision to have it come out the 21 of November. In regards to Nintendo and droughts, we have to realize that after the SNES generation 3rd parties started to move away from Nintendo and Nintendo along with Rare were the only ones trying really making games at any consistent rate so it isn't like Nintendo didn't try. Also I would rather have an amazing game than 20 "OK" games .

12104
GC is virtually a dead system so I'm not sure it is fair to call this a drought, actually the GC early on had a pretty steady supply of good games at least more so than the N64 (not sure if you meant the GC did not have good games or was referring to the drought). My main point though was that PS2 did have a massive drought in the beginning as did Microsoft with Xbox 360, so it isn't fair to say that Sony and MS are immune to the "drought" statement.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Sensor Bar

Perhaps I'm way off base here, but what is so complex about hooking up a sensor bar? Have people (including ones that don't play games) gotten so dumb that hooking up a sensor bar is not "easy"?

12107
Yeah for Ceric defending the Virtual Boy, I too love the system and recently bought some more games for it. If it wasn't for the headaches it would have been the perfect system, and even today I find it an impressive machine visually, definately a one of a kind machine.

Lol, I already have one controller reserved (with the nunchuck) along with my console, but when I camp out for for the Wii (yes I am doing two camp outs, one for PS3 one for Wii) I am going to snatch up two more along with a classic controller. I would reserve another controller but I'm like you in that I like finding some of the accessories, especially when you pick them up off a nice big table and you feel like you really earned it!

Well if preorders are any indication prices could be REALLY high on ebay, already they are selling for 900-1100 dollars for the preorder. Once the drought hits and PS3 is more known amongst consumers, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 400-800 dollar leap from that (heck even at 900$ it would be worth it). With that money from my PS3 sales I hope to get a shiney new 33-40inch HD-TV for my bedroom (a bigger one would be a bit too hard on the eyes lol) along with christmas presents.

I think that is what you meant to say, I also like how now people are comparing it to the six axis, when Nintendo created it FIRST. The SIXAXIS is just a Wiimote with less functionality.

Thanks Mario, I do think this generation really emphasizes that point, because previous generations the systems basically offered similar experiences (except for the great Nintendo game here and there) while with the Wii you are getting a whole different one with the new controller. Maybe you aren't getting the most out of your money when it comes to hardware and built in software (though Wii isn't naked in that department) but you are when it comes to how you experience the games. Nintendo is trying differentiate themselves from the other game systems, and that form of business usually does not produce "cheap" prices.

I have a PS2 but hardly ever play it, though I am looking for Okami (I can't find it at any store now). THe only games I really enjoyed on my PS2 were Jak and Daxter 1 (they totally destroyed that series by giving it a "mature" look), Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Silent Hill games, Mister Mosquito (very weird but fun) and Shadow of Colossus to a point (I DID NOT like Ico though, but besides those games my PS2 has not been a good gaming center for me (I have other games but never have the incentive to play them most of which I got for cheap).

For me I'm going to start standing in line at 12pm or so at my Best Buy, I know with the 360 they got about 80 units or something (maybe more I'm not sure). Why am going to stand in line for 22 hrs or so? Well because I like money, and that is what PS3 is going to get for me on ebay .

Fact is, Sony has long offered more value and variety, and as we've seen with nearly every console ever, that's the key issue here. That's why we were 'scammed' with the 64 - lack of variety and massive game draughts that neither Sony nor Microsoft ever really handed to us. The chronic delays and broken promises, years later, I'm used to. Most consumers would not put up with that crap though - they need to tighten the ship if they hope to expand.

Perhaps I'm wrong here but I recall a massive drought of games for PS2 at launch (well of GOOD games) and quite a few months into its existance. In regards to article, I really hate the value argument because value can be derived from more than the cost of what is in something but what you get out of it, with gaming it would be the experiences you get. I kind of think of it in the terms of movies, let's say you get two movies with equal budgets, and they both cost 9$ to see them, one is a terrible experience the other is amazing, would you say you say the bad one is of equal value to the great one? If you use the logic that value is derived from what the cost of the product was to produce and the materials used, then you would have to say you got equal value.

Suffice to say, if you don't plan to get one on launch day chances are you will be out of luck until the next shipment. Given the launch size, though, I don't think it will be too hard to pick one up on the 19th, depending on location as it will be much harder in the cities. It was the same way with the Gamecube and the Xbox around here, so I would be surprised if the same didn't occur for the Wii.

Still plan to do "line duty" that day, though, but not for more than a hour and half before the store opens.

Well I hope you get one, I'm definately not going to take the chance of it being in stores and hey line sitting isn't that bad especially since I don't have any college courses that day.  It is kind of funny though because I will basically get 1 day of rest from the PS3 launch (which I plan on sitting in line around 18 hrs before best buy opens) and then back I go again for Wii.

I know nothing about DX9 but I do know that developers for PC probaly never truly get all the power out of the graphic's cards due to their being so many, along with new ones coming out every few months. That is one advantage I give to systems like Xbox 360 and PS3, there is a much higher chance of a developer tapping into their full potential than there is with a PC.

KDR you must live around an area that isn't too populated, everywhere here was sold out of 360s right after launch. One thing I wonder, how many Tickle Me Elmos were made? If a gift is super popular unless you release millions of them (Even at 250$ it still is a good christmas gift price) they will sell out, now will Wii be that popular? I don't know, but I do know this is new territory for Nintendo and gamning alike, so I'm not going to say anything in regards to shortages or non-shortages except that I think it would be wise to be safe than sorry.

I do want to clear up the fear that you are not "guaranteed" a Wii at launch if you preorder, that is there as a way to save Gamestop/eb if things go south. As of now your chances of getting either a PS3 or Wii at launch are almost certain if you did preorder one, in fact my manager told me that they aren't even paying to preorder number yet since they expect to be able to match the amount preordered with units. If worse comes to worse he said he would figure out order numbers if they come up short.

Or not being overly optimistic that you will find a Wii if you don't stay in line. It is not "fanboyism" to realize that Wii has potential to be a hot commodity like ANY new game system, compounded by the fact that stores are already pushing it as the hot christmas item, namely Toys R us. I could care less what GameCube did, the Wii is a different ball game, as is every next generation system, maybe even more so for the Wii because of its "uniqueness" that could either kill it or make it soar along with a whole new marketing approach from Nintendo.

It is flat out naive to tell people to expect to be able to get a Wii on launch day by walking in, because there is no way to know that! I can understand saying there is a decent chance for that situation to occur because of a large shipment (disregarding the fact that it hasn't been confirmed), but to basically speak of it as virtual fact is where I draw the line. That is being overly optimistic in the other direction.

It really appears to me that Red Steel is one of those games where you have to get used to the control scheme. It has its own positives and negatives like the mouse and joypad.

Crysis easily beats any game we've seen on PS3 or Xbox 360 visually (now whether the game is fun or not is another story). For myself I originally sold my Xbox 360 (I've recently repurchased one though) to get a Geforce 7900GTX card since the visuals and performance were better for multiplatform games that were on PC.

I hope it does, too.

I have mixed feelings: on one hand, I want Wiis to fly off the shelves like crazy. On the other, it means that a lot of die-hard Nintendo fans will lose out on them to "non-gamers" who won't appreciate them in the same manner the fans would.

Hopefully, Nintendo's stock can even account for explosion of Wii popularity which I predict will happen.

Yeah but if those people are truly die-hard Nintendo gamers they would be camping out .

Makes the Wii's 60$ control set not seem too bad if you compare quality and price. Sounds like Sony went cheap all the way and I wouldn't be surprised if the controllers end up breaking sooner than they should.

PS3 on the other hand...lol. Look at the $2,000 dollar pre-orders for sale on eBay.

Let's wait and see what happens after the Wii commercials start rolling before we decide what the Wii will or won't do at launch.

As for the PS3, these are the initial hardcores trying to get one early, believing that they won't have the chance to get one for a while.

The Wii has only seen the very, very beginning of its rise to popularity, and it already attracted more impressive numbers than the PS3 which people SHOULD be FAR more anxious to reserve because the PS3 is slated to be far harder to come by.

The way I see it, I ain't throwing down any bets on what will happen when these two launch.

I agree with Smash that is why I think it is kind of presumptuous and a bit risky to blatantly say that Wii will be available for "Walk in and pick it up" on launch day. If you give people potential false hope that they will be able to get it on launch day without camping there is a chance they could come away super dissapointed regretting they did not camp out. That is why I am taking a safe than sorry approach and think everyone who wants the Wii should consider it as well. When I see that Toys R Us is ranking it as the hot holiday item, I can't help but think Tickle Me Elmo.

Well I know my PC can outperform my Xbox 360 visually. I have a 7900GTX, 2gbs of memory and a 4200+ dual core. I don't even believe the PS3 has a graphic card up to 7900GTX level, but is based on a lower 7000 series card (perhaps the 7800?). Not to mention that within a few months the new 8000 series will be out taking full advantge of Vista which should wipe the floor with both PS3 and Xbox 360 graphically.
