I think the GC and N64 launches werwe horribly under-supplied.

But it's exactly the unambitious hardware that lets them take a more agressive production schedule. Heck, MS is STILL trying to figure out how to manufacture their stuff efficiently a year after their X360 launch. They're losing so much money that they're trying to rework the inner chips of the X360 to make it cheaper for them to make it, not make it cheaper for consumers to buy. And that's with a much simpler console than Sony has...

I thought GC had a good supply? I know N64 had troubles but I'm unsure about GC having similar troubles. Either way I am fairly certain that NIntendo has always tried to finalize hardware way ahead of time, it is just with WIi they have not ran into many if any production problems. Regardless of what people say the Wii hardware is still complex, but in different ways from Xbox 360 and PS3, the condensed size and limited power consumption is one of those complexities.

I know what you mean, heck they were still adding stuff to the 500$ version in September (the HDMI port). That seems like really poor planning to me, they should have had their system finalized in July and started production. Nintendo was very smart when it came to Wii console production, they finalized their hardware in June or so in order to start production in a timely manner to have enough units out. It wasn't because of the inferior graphical hardware either, it is just that Nintendo has always been pretty smart when it comes to finalizing hardware!

I really don't think Nintendo has much to worry about at the moment, but in the future they should consider getting the rights to the technology but as of now it has these things going against it.

1. Like Arbok said, not many developers will support a 3rd party controller
2. It still is unproven
3. There are no games being built around it unlike Wii
4. I get the impression it is not wireless (the wireless controller of those seems to use basic accelometers)
5. It could be overly expensive

Well with the latest news that they will have to delay their blu-ray player because of bugs I would not be surprised in the least if they are running into even more PS3 production problems.

You know what I've noticed, and maybe I'm exagerrating but it seems many of the games on Xbox 360 have choppy or slow framerates, while the Wii games seem to run super smooth. This could be a perfect example of a disadvantage of more powerful hardware, companies try to do way too much with it and in turn it hurts the fluidity of the game (which is my number 1 concern when it comes to visuals).

P.S. I don't know about you guys but I was definately wowed by the boss visuals in Mario Galaxy, they looked close to CGI (especially the spider one!) which looked next-generation!

I think there will be news either this week or next that Sony cannot meet their projected 400,000 units on launch day.

Weren't there rumors awhile back that there was a racing simulation under development from Nintendo for Wii? Personallky I wouldn't be surprised if we did see one.

I have to disagree with you there, I still don't think the leap is that great and the difference between HD-TV and standard is overblown a bit. I've played Ghost Recon, and yeah it is nice but it was always pretty nice visually last generation as well, so the leap is not that significant. Besides my PC is already a better machine for visuals than the Xbox 360, so if I want next generation visuals I'll play PC games, if I want some quality exclusive games with less emphasis on visuals I'll go with my Xbox 360 and Wii thank you .

For me I haven't been as excited for a console since the N64 days with Wii. So I guess my itch has been scratched and like Mario 64 before it, I will have fresh experiences with new ways to play games. That is something I never experienced with GC even with the increased visuals.

I've always wondered why companies launch with so few units to get into people's hands, that's thousands, even hundreds of thousands of wasted sales and wasted hype and wasted advertising dollars. This might finally be a launch that doesn't strike me as an overblown and useless media circus. And it's important to have a large user base right off the bat to tempt third parties, ESPECIALLY for Nintendo.

I don't think it is because of the "unambitious" tech because the Wii's compact design and what appears to be quality, durable hardware is ambitious technology, just not in the sense of graphical horsepower. Nintendo is just smart when it comes to hardware for the most part, they finalize the hardware way ahead of time to get a sizeable stockpile for launch. Sony or even Microsoft wouldn't have had their problems if they would have finalized hardware sooner, especially Sony who was making changes up to the last second.

It's hugely arguable... with games like LoZ: MM, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Perfect Dark out there, it's arguable whether it was even the best game on it's own particular platform.

It gets no argument with me, especially when compared to with Majora's Mask .

That said, we have less than a month to go! Where's the media blitz? I'm well aware of the great press the Wii is getting but if Nintendo is serious about this whole thing about grabing the nongamer and expanding the market, they need to hit the old standbys of television and billboards and I just havn't seen it yet.

Oh don't worry I'm sure the marketing will come soon, I predict it will start early November. Nintendo does not have the finances to back a marketing blitz before then, and really I think it would be a waste since the last two weeks or so are pivotal. It is pretty safe to say that Wii will sell out on launch day, so marketing it not needed for that, what will be key is between launch day and Christmas when they actually have systems to go around. As of now they can rely on the great media coverage to at least place the idea in people's heads, which will be pounded in when they start their own advertising blitz.

I agree totally Smash, those are some great points I do think people are underestimating Wii. BTW in regards to exercise, since the Wii is much more physical there is a good chance the PS3/Xbox 360 owners will be weeded out since Wii owners will be able to take the system wars to them physically and may live longer as well!

I think you can predict sales trends.  You focus on hype of product, availability, word of mouth popularity...and to some sense rarity...as being rare definately drives up demand.

The Wii fits several of those as being redhot, and a few as not.

I personally think the Wii will be a huge success this holiday, but I don't see it claiming the number one top stop for sales and demand.  If it even began to climb the ladder you know Sony and Microsoft both will push to dethrone it quickly.

Not much Sony can do about it when they can't even get out enough systems to come close to meeting demand nor nothing in the way of unique gaming experiences.

Wasn't Tickle Me Elmo predicted to be the hot holiday item by Toys R Us?

I know my writing wasn't perfect.  I wrote it at 11:30pm after being at work and the event all day I was tired.  Still writing isn't a strong skill of mine, so those complaints were valid.

Oh I know it wasn't perfect but some of those people were acting quite immature over there mainly responding to your complaints instead of reading the whole thing!

Some of the those people remind me of some of the idiots at Gamefaqs, they can't read anything longer than 20 words and when someone may have a slightly different opinion than them they take personal shots. Spak's imrpessions were far from negative except for the Wiiboxing (which I wouldn't really call negative, just concerned) yet those posts act like he was bashing Wii!
