NWR Forums Discord / Smash Brothers Brawl is Melee 1.1
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:16:29 AM »
It has been confirmed here http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/review/R122293.html

You really all should stay away from Brawl because:

Quote
The Wi-Fi battle options are far from flawless: searching for players can take up to minutes (though there is a Sandbag you can perform your moves on to alleviate the waiting time); tedious friend code-entering is required to battle your friends (though this is a global complaint for Nintendo's Wi-Fi titles, not just Brawl); and there is sometimes a bit of lag during battle.

Or its pitiful modes:

Quote
This time, the only bonus level is Target Smash. Snag the Trophies, Race to the Finish, and Board the Platforms are nowhere to be seen, and the few Target Smash stages are now shared amongst all characters, instead of each character having his/her own unique stage as in 64 and Melee. The varied, sometimes wacky bonuses that appear upon clearing each stage in Melee (and whose collection led to unlocking the most prized trophy, the Diskun) have also been removed: one's score is now entirely dependent on the time remaining and damage dealt.

Simply put, many of the remixes, while arranged by famed composers, do not really do their originals justice. The fast-paced, cheery-sounding Ocarina of Time medley would have sounded out of place in the original game. The Song of Time in the medley lacks the ethereal, somewhat sorrowful mood within the Temple of Time. Saria's Song, which should evoke a melancholy feeling of a lost friend, is strikingly unfitting when played at such a fast tempo. .............. Nearly all of the music appears to be synthesized, not recorded by a live orchestra, as was the case in Super Mario Galaxy. Brawl's soundtrack is a prime example where nostalgia or quantity does not imply quality.

So in conclusion:

Quote
For those who wanted a Melee 1.1, that's great, but I'd rather have stuck to the original instead of shelling out another $50 for a limited upgrade.

Please be smart and skip out on Smash Brothers Brawl, instead get an overlooked gem like Escape form Bug Island which is fresh! Heck get it and Miami Nights for the price of Smash Brothers Brawl. 1+1=2 not 1.1

General Gaming / Surround Sound 5.1 help!
« on: February 21, 2008, 11:50:36 AM »
Recently I purchased a Yamaha RX-V661 receiver with both optical and HDMI hookups, I recently got things set up and tried to play a game (Raw vs Smackdown 200, what I noticed is that the two rear (It is a 5.1 set up) speakers were not giving off any sound. Now the odd thing is that when I play a Blu-ray movie the rear speakers work perfectly. Has anyone ran into this problem, I've tried outputting the audio through both HDMI and optical and still the same problem. I wish I had my Xbox 360 to test it, but I don't.

What will you all do with NWR's new found power of changing time even allowing the creation of posts in multiple dimensions at different times? Not sure what I am going to do, but I applaud the staff for this breakthrough, it could change things how we know it.

General Gaming / Sad times [my XBOX360 died]
« on: January 20, 2008, 03:30:28 PM »
My Xbox 360 Elite finally died today. It was looking pretty sick so I'm not surprised. Believe it or not it was NOT the red rings of doom. In fact I got no red lights. At first it would take 10 seconds or so for my 360 console to even start booting, and that time got longer and longer. Now it won't even boot at all even when the green power light is on (It won't read the controller either), and after a couple minutes it shuts itself off. So now I have to 3-5 days to get the return box and up to 3 weeks for it to be sent back. Sad times. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Which video game or cartoon character do you think should be president of the WORLD?!?!?

I choose Princess Peach because she would make everyone cakes, and people would be so happy after eating it, that there would be peace on earth.

General Gaming / Motion blur, the new thing in games?
« on: December 13, 2007, 07:21:02 PM »
I dunno maybe this has been going on for a long time, I don't remember it if that is the case, but lately I've noticed alot of the "prettier" games are using blurring when you turn the camera whether it be an FPS or a 3rd person game. Has this been going on for awhile and I haven't noticed or is this the new technical trick to be able to better handle the visuals? At times I find it quite distracting, though not as bad as a poor framerate.

I bought a pair of these and I have no idea how to use them. I'm trying to strip the insulation off some 18 gauge speaker wires for my new speaker set and don't have a clue about how these things work. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Not sure how many have seen this, but I just got back from it and the visuals are jaw dropping especially if you see the 3-D version. I've never quite experienced anything like it visually, and the 3D effects work almost flawlessly (though you do get a slight headache). Regardless this is a pretty fun action movie, that is a visual treat. One of the most exciting sequences was the final battle, which was breathtaking in parts.

While this particular medium has a ways to go yet when it comes to replicating people naturally, this easily beats out Polar Express. Some of the movements were quite natural for the most part and at times some of the characters did give off the illusion of real people. Yeah there was some stiffness in battles here and there, but overall it was a beautiful movie visually.

« on: November 09, 2007, 02:02:32 PM »
Not sure if you guys have read this but Take-Two is giving two options to people that purchased GTA: SA, they can either

A) Return the game for an edited copy

B) Get a $35 payoff if they were offended.

I can buy Contra 4 with this!

I'm seriously considering doing it because I have no respect for Take-Two.

Here is the right way to beat them!

Some select quotes

Quote

"He must beat her where it will not leave marks. He should not beat her on the hand... He should beat her in some places where it will not cause any damage. He should not beat her like he would beat an animal or a child -- slapping them right and left.

Quote

"Woman, it has gone too far. I can't bear it anymore," he tells the men to tell their wives. "If he beats her, the beatings must be light and must not make her face ugly.

General Chat / Writers strike is on
« on: November 01, 2007, 04:59:38 PM »
This is From the LA times blog

Quote

Finally, this gets underway with a standing ovation for the WGA committee that has been leading the way during these labor negotiations. It's a full house, and everyone is at rapt attention as leaders discuss where negotiations stand.

A few minutes into the gathering, there is no more uncertainty: There will be a strike, leaders tell the thousands of WGA members in attendence. Leaders will send out a press release tomorrow afternoon, telling members precisely when the strike will begin. The Screen Actors Guild president says the actors guild is in full support of the strike and will stand by the writers for as long as it takes.

Not sure how many have been paying attention, but this could very well mean seasons cut short of most scripted shows (But we still will get those crappy reality shows and perhaps more!), and many of Hollywood's movies could be ground to a halt with no writers to polish or write scripts. Some even predict that this strike could potentially ruin the economy of California, or at least hurt it immensely. Whether that is the case or not, we'll see, but regardless expect seasons to be cut short for shows along with the quality possibly dwindling, especially for serialized TV shows (if they are even made now).

I’m tierd of 2 HUGE sequels.. (the Mario games, not the extra Mario games like Mario kart or tennis or whatever) yeah, I didn’t buy sunshine because I wasn’t interseted.. same with Mario galaxy.. mario galaxy is too damn homosexual (Another term was used but the commies here censored it)for me to play with.. and I don’t think I’ll enjoy it.. the music is horrible in galaxy, and the 3D worlds suck.

That cements it, I officially will NOT buy Mario Galaxy. U R Mr.Gay indeed!

Introduced in 2004, the Nintendo DS (for Dual Screen or Devil Screen), this game machine has sold some 700 million or so units. That’s an epidemic. It’s undeniable that it has been a “success” for its Japanese manufacturer, Nintendo (makers of Donkey Kong aka Monkey Donkey, a game in which a monkey kidnaps a young girl to satisfy his bestial desires). It’s also been a tremendous success for pedophiles everywhere. - excerpt from Brownback blog

Get rid of your DS monkeys are defiling kids everywhere because of it

General Gaming / Konami wants Sony's baby
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:42:44 PM »
Well it appears for those of us hoping that Konami would actually make some big budget games for Wii or even Xbox 360 for that matter are out of luck, they appear to be attached to Sony (I wouldn't be surprised if some Ben Franklins were mediating it).

Read between the lines

Quote

Konami’s highest-profile titles, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online, have only been announced for PS3, continuing the developer’s strong support of Sony’s console. Sony’s entry into the next generation of consoles has been shaky, with tough competition from Microsoft and the mass market-friendly Nintendo Wii, but Konami is confident in its longtime partner.

“Sony’s always been a strategic partner of Konami since the early days, and they will continue to be,” Crouts insists. “We still have high hopes for the platform itself, and what it can do. That’s one of the reasons you see Metal Gear Solid 4 running on it so well…. We have high expectations for PS3. We know Sony is an established console player in the industry, and we know they’re not going anywhere.”

Well I got around to playing the demo of this particular game and can't say I'm terribly impressed. It is too bad , because it borrows a lot of the ideas behind Geist. For those that do not know, you control a squad and the ghost of the fallen captain can possess each member (You are the ghost) to utilize their abilities. Basically think Geist meets Ghost Recon. Each character has unique abilities from telekinetic powers that move obstacles, to a mystical sniper rifle that can shoot enemies through walls, to a woman that can set a room on fire.

Sounds interesting right? Well if the demo is any indication it appears they dropped the ball, the level design seems horribly linear and the enemy design is pretty sad, with very generic fights. Maybe this changes in the final game, but so far I am leaning towards not buying the game because of what looks like to be, once again, a good idea but with less than stellar results. One odd thing is that really the demo wasn't that scary, the monster designs are so blah and even they "pop" out it is not even startling.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo wins Marketer of the Year
« on: October 14, 2007, 09:30:25 PM »
What a turn around, I remember everyone whining and moaning about Nintendo's marketing, well it appears they are finally getting things right!

Look here

I especially like the praise of the name, something that brings back old memories of hatred when it was first announced!

Quote

And now the back story on that crazy name.

When Nintendo announced in April 2006 that it was changing the code name of its forthcoming console from Revolution to its permanent moniker, Wii, the world said, "What?"

Nintendo executives can't be that naïve, right? They do know what people will think of, right? Wait, is it maybe just a strategy to build buzz?

No, yes and sort of.

Nintendo was not naïve. In fact, it hired a respected branding and naming giant, Interbrand, to come up with the name (along with dozens of others that were discarded).

And, yes, Nintendo executives did know the urinary connotation of the word. They were prepared for the jokes and snickers but also knew those would run their course.

And while executives insist the name wasn't meant purely to inspire buzz, the selection and announcement were indeed wellfounded in strategy. Wii the name cannot be shortened or bastardized.

Wii the name refers to the inclusiveness and we-ness of playing together. Wii the name has two i's that physically mimic two people or two remotes. And Wii the name is global -- it's pronounced the same way in most any language.

As for the announcement, it was the timing that was strategic. It came just weeks before the console's first public unveiling at E3, the most important gaming show of the year. The intent was to let the comments and snickers rise up and then die down by the time it came to checking out the hardware and software, says George Harrison, senior VPmarketing and corporate communications at Nintendo of America.

"We knew that people were going to make fun of it," says Perrin Kaplan, VP-marketing and corporate affairs. "We knew there would be a little rainstorm before the sun showed up again."

And, they ask, a year and a half later, can you imagine it being called anything else?

Well, no, actually, Wii can't.
