NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XXXIII Punch-Out!! Round 4
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:18:00 AM »
Little Mac was stretching for his next bout, it was good to see the Punch-Out!! Tournament with his own eyes. His dad had told him so much about it when he was younger. Thankfully he resembled his dad in every way possible that he was able to strike a bit of fear in Doc Louis during his surprise visit just the previous day.

See his dad had been growing more and more concerned with Doc Louis’s obsession with winning the tournament several years back that he decided to break ties with Doc Louis. Shortly after their final encounter he was hit by some sort of vehicle, he could have sworn it was a bicycle but he blacked out before he could get a good look. This crippled him and any change of mind was out of the question, so he went to his son, who he had kept secret all of these years and helped train him for the ring down the line.

When Little Mac Sr. seen the clones start to appear in the tournament he was shocked beyond belief, and asked his son to infiltrate Doc Louis’s team pretending to be him. He figured a man who managed to beat science and create a literal clone army must be open to the “strange”.  This was his opportunity to get back at Doc Louis and give his son an opportunity to bring honor back to the Punch-Out!! Tournament.

Little Mac Jr. was prepared to take the torch and run with it This plan started to take shape after he encountered Doc Louis the previous day. He had really give Doc Louis a scare, there was even a bit of regret in Doc Louis’s face which he could not quite pinpoint. In his office Little Mac Jr. explained his intentions of getting the belt back along with a cover story about why he was able to walk again. A look of concern the last he seen on Doc’s face as he left.

“PLEASE WELCOME LITTLE MAC” said an announcers voice as it echoed through his locker room.
Little Mac Jr. was ready.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Piston Honda, still high from his last win was anxiously awaiting taking down yet another Little Mac.

“PLEASE WELCOME LITTLE MAC” said the booming voice of Luigi.

No one came from the entrance ramp.

10 minutes later still nothing.

“Winner by forfeit, PISTON HONDA”

Meanwhile back in the locker room was an unconscious wrestler. That of Little Mac Jr. or Little Mac Prime  also known as Stogi

>>>>>>

Big Bertha was sneaking around the arena late at night looking for any potential examples to set. So far she hadn’t made enough of an impression to allow herself to be included in the tournament. She decided she’d look around the ring area one last time. To her surprise she found a strange Bald Headed character. Wait, she heard of him, he was Bald Bull.
“You want to box?” she said.

“I was going to bide my time to cause chaos in this tournament but I guess I can handle a woman”

They both stepped up to each other in the center of ring. With a grin on his face Bald Bull took several steps back.
“This will be quick” He said.

He charged Big Bertha, and swung hard and connected with her chin. Before pride could set in a fist connected with his gut, his poor gut, and he was knocked out cold.

The next morning the crew found two unconscious bodies of a massive man and a woman in the center of the ring. They knew the one individual by the alias of Mr. Jack, and the woman, they just called her Spak.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Standing in the outside entrance Doc Louis had a smile of almost demonic proportions while watching the unconscious Little Mac getting hauled away. Mr. Dream appeared behind him.

“Well that has been taken care of boss. Do you want anything else done?” said Mr. Dream.

“You know, thanks for asking. There is a Little Mac Clone that I would like dealt with. I seen him speaking with one of Tyson’s men, and I find that unacceptable. Could you do something about that?”

“Sure thing” said Mr. Dream with a grin of his own.

In the middle of ring, between bouts, was found the unconscious body of a Little Mac Clone codenamed Rabicle.

>>>>

Team Tyson was starting to get confident; Doc Louis’s team of clones and misfits was dwindling. For the next bout, Mike Tyson chose a goon that hadn’t yet seen action yet.

“Do us and the tournament proud” said Tyson as he patted him on the back.

>>>>>

In the ring the Tyson goon stared at the Little Mac Clone, codename DrewMG. He could see worry on the clone’s face. Really he could not blame Doc Louis’s team for being worried, lots of strange stuff had been going on with their fellow teammates, being knocked out left and right. It was too bad, because he wanted a fight where confidence was high on both sides.

The bell rang.

He walked up to the Little Mac Clone. All of a sudden the Little Mac Clone shouted.

“Don’t hurt me!”

With that he fell down on the mat and stayed there for the 10 count.
The goon could not help but feel sorry for the whimpering clone. For his first battle, he was not proud of his win.

So who is going to purchase the XboX Live Arcade version of B-T? I know as soon as I get the chance I will. It fixes the problem that hurt B-T the most, which was the framerate. Considering I loved how smooth B-K was for Arcade I can't wait to play this. Not to mention, as a long time N64 fan, the hot swap feature is in!

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XXXIII Punch-Out!! Round 3
« on: April 29, 2009, 02:00:40 AM »
The tournament was getting starting to get interesting with the previous days removal of 3 Little Mac Clones. Doc Louis was not deterred though and remained confident in the face of his adversaries.

“Nothing is going to keep the title from me, I mean, my team” said Doc Louis in his private office quite loudly.

After the statement was made he heard the scuttle of what he swore were footsteps moving away from his door. He peered out his door but seen nothing.

“Must have been one of those clones” he said with a hint of disgust in his voice.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Little Mac Clone, codename Pap64 was about to begin his bought with a former champion, Piston Honda. He took a few deep breaths, sat up from the corner and stood face to face with the massive Piston Honda. The bell rang, follow by a quick 3 punch burst from Piston Honda. The Little Mac Clone dodged everyone and managed to connect a few punches himself to Honda’s massive head.  Piston Honda backed up and did his infamous strafe, when he came down to land his punches the Little Mac Clone countered with a punch to the gut. Honda took a fall backwards.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9……………….Honda was up!

This did not frustrate the Little Mac because Honda looked dazed.  Honda refused to give up and started to strafe again. Little Mac knew he could finish it here. Honda was moving in when Little Mac Heard several voices all in one gigantic synchronic boom say:

“GET HIM LITTLE MAC”

That distraction was enough to take his eyes momentarily off Piston Honda. That was all that was needed for Honda to hit his patented move. The last thing in Little Mac codename Pap64 was
“I appreciate the support brothers but why so loud?”

There was darkness.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Don Flamenco was quite proud of himself for getting two important secrets from a member of the Doc Louis team. In fact during his warm up period in the now vacant ring caused him to dance his dance of love. Mesmorizing himself with his own good looks and ability he was unaware of the person standing in front of you.

“Pretty boy, why don’t you try those charms on me?”

In shock Don Flamenco jumped face down on the mat in fear. When he got the courage to look up, he seen, can’t be, a woman? But women aren’t allowed in the Punch-Out tournament. She was attractive though and reminded him a bit of the fictional character Wonder Woman, only slightly more muscular. He stood up with redness permeating his cheeks, he was embarrassed of himself.

“How about you throw that flower away and lets have a fight, right now” stated the woman
“I’m sorry miss, not only am I too attractive to get into any serious battles, but I don’t fight women”
A scowl that could scare away a thousand goombas appeared on the woman’s face.

“You are a coward” yelled the woman.

“I am no coward!” yelled Don Flamenco back “To make it fair though I will allow you to take the first shot, just watch the face”

As soon as he said that he started raising his boxing gloves up and down while saying try it. Though it came out something like this:

“wah wah wah”

The woman, who is known as Big Bertha, was furious and took a swing and while it had impact Don Flamenco blocked it.
“Well if that is how she wants to do it, it is my turn” He thought.

He raised his arm to throw a devastating hook. He managed to do it right but he felt no impact. Before he could even react he seen a fist coming right at him.

“Oh no not the f………” before he could finish his statement all he could see is stars.

“Serves you right. I will get into this tournament one way or another!” said the mysterious Big Bertha as she crawled out of the ring.

Don Flamenco, also known as, Dasmos. Was out of the tournament.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Tyson received the news of Don Flamenco’s “retirement” from the tournament. And was both furious and fearful. He could almost see the Punch-Out!! Tournament slipping way, not only would he never be able to hold the belt again but he could see the tournament that he loved so much destroyed by Doc Louis’s team.

It was time to go after the heart of Doc Louis’s team so he sent one of his goons to fight. Who was his opponent? Why it was Glass Joe

Standing in the ring the Goon saw Glass Joe shivering in the corner.

“Aren’t you going to fight?” said the Goon.

“I’m, I’m scared to fight. I wanted to help from the outside!”

Feeling sorry for the veteran, the goon stated.

“I realize you have only won one fight, but think to yourself. Why do you box? My guess is that you love this sport. So why not give it your all, that is what you truly are, a boxer, not someone who works outside the ring but competes in the ring”

“You know, you are right” said Glass Joe as he got out of his corner and met with the Goon in the middle.

“Are you read to fight?” Said the referee

Both competitors shook there heads. Not long after the bell finished there was a quick punch from the Goon and Glass Joe was knocked out in an instant”

As Glass Joe was in a daze down for the 10 count he thought to himself.

“At least I tried” he said with a tear rolling down his cheek.

The Goon took pity on him, helped him up and said.

“I wish we could have someone with your heart on the team.”

He hugged the now tearful Glass Joe.  Trying to hold tears back himself.

After the embrace Glass Joe, aka  Mop_it_up left the ring for what may be his last time. He realized all along he wanted to go out fighting, lucky for him he was able to do just that. Home didn’t look so frightening anymore. A croissant with his name on it was calling for him.
>>>>>>>>

While in his office, Doc Louis was shaking his head in disgust because the pathetic Glass Joe had the gall to lose so easily and possibly retire form the ring for good.

::knock Knock::
“What, who could that be? “ said Doc Louis as he went to his office door and opened it. There stood a Little Mac Clone.

“What do you want?” said Doc Louis with disgust

“I’m back” said the Little Mac Clone.

“What?”

“It is me, Little Mac. You know the former heavyweight champion?”

“But, how? You haven’t aged a day Little Mac”

“That is a story for another time. Right now I want my belt back.”

Still in complete shock staring at the youthful Pupil, not to mention, out of the corner of his eye, Doc Louis seen what looked to be a Little Mac Clone being hauled away on a gurney. He couldn’t help but shudder as he looked his former pupil in the eye.

“Uh, um, welcome back son” said Doc Louis.

Little Mac said nothing as he walked into Doc Louis’s office.

“Uh, yeah, let’s talk”

Doc Louis shut his door.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XXXIII Punch-Out!! Round 2
« on: April 28, 2009, 02:02:12 AM »
5 years ago:

Feeling useless, Doc Louis was growing tired of no longer being coach of Little Mac. It had already been several years since Little Mac retired and Doc Louis was growing impatient. His mind started centering on the Punch-Out!! Heavyweight title again. Refusing to let the past die, Doc Louis took up science and started experimenting with DNA with the drive to create another young Little Mac. After a couple of years this was a success and Doc Louis decided that he must guarantee heavyweight gold and would get it by any means necessary  and what is the best way of doing this? Why creating around a dozen little macs. If anyone was going to have the Heavyweight title on their team it would be him. He’d figure out what to do with them after his goal was achieved, right now winning was all that mattered.  With his, what some would call, an army ready he entered the Punch-Out!! Tournament for the long vacated title

4 weeks ago:

Seeing the multitude of Little Macs enter the tournament many former opponents of Little Mac decided it was best to join the winning side. These included the former champion Mr. Dream along with King Hippo, and Glass Joe.  A true dream team was formed, and dominated the competition for well 4 weeks.

Present Day:

Tyson was starting to fear for the Punch-Out!! Tournament after seeing, what he perceived, as an invasion. No longer was his gunning for his glory days but he wanted to regain the integrity of the tournament as a whole from an invading force.  The best way to do this was to send one of his most trusted teammates, lovingly called his Goon to face off with the Little Mac Clone, codenamed Khush.

The goon tried several times to take down this particular Little Mac Clone with a flurry of punches, uppercuts, and his patented tornado spin. None of it seemed to face the Little Mac Clone who ducked and blocked his way out of trouble. After taking a severe beating, losing stars from his noggin, the Goon was starting to feel hopeless. That was until a mysterious voice could be heard from the crowd that seemed to distract the Little Mac Clone. The Goon took advantage of this and hit him with his tornado spin. The Little Mac did not get up for the 10 count, and by a seeming miracle The Goon had knocked out one of Doc Louis’s mysterious clones.

>>>>>>>

Meanwhile, Don Flamenco ran into a fellow competitor of his in the locker room. He felt this was the chance he had been waiting for, so he pulled out his rose and started dancing like the lovely flower he was. This opponent was so moved by his performance, that when Don Flamenco asked for some secrets, the character, a Little Mac Clone, gave them freely.

>>>>>>>

Little Mac Clone, codename Nuclearspeed was warming up for his next fight. When all of a sudden he heard a voice say.

“You sure don’t look like much”

Before he knew it a devastating punch came out of nowhere and while he was spinning from the attack he heard that voice, which sounded oddly feminine say.

“Look who got beat up by a girl. And you guys think you are tough?”

This was the last thing he heard before he was hauled away on a stretcher, no longer able to compete for his team.

>>>>>>>>

Seeing the gold within his grasp, Doc Louis was starting to drool a bit as he was going for daytime ride on his lovely bicycle. When he arrived at the gym he seen Don Flamenco talking to none other than Little Mac Clone, codename stevey. What disturbed Doc most was that he heard two valuable secrets spilled to the somewhat disturbing Don Flamenco. He had seen enough, so he informed his teammates that an action must be taken.  Not long after this discussion did the Punch-Out!! Staff find the unconscious body of stevey; looks like the fight was over for him.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XXXIII Punch-Out!! Round 1
« on: April 27, 2009, 01:25:26 AM »
It has been around two decades since Little Mac took the Punch-Out!!  Heavyweight Championship. Since winning the title, Little Mac hasn’t been seen. After much consideration Mario, head of the Punch-Out!! Tournament decided it was time to have another tournament and stripped the title from Little Mac to hold a new tournament to crown a new Punch-Out!! Heavy Weight Champion. Mike Tyson, wishing to get back his glory days as champion has formed a team of his own. The title seems to easily be within his grasp after Team Tyson easily knocked out their first couple of opponents. This all changed though when a mysterious group appeared in the tournament, consisting of some of his former protégés, including the former Heavyweight Champion, Mr. Dream. What shook the Punch-Out!! World was that this team, seemingly led by the bike riding Doc Louis, was that it consisted of over a dozen Little Mac’s.

To make matters worse, there were rumblings of a Punch-Out!! First, a female boxer who apparently was doing whatever she could to enter the tournament; even if it meant a few unsuspecting opponents had to take a fall to her devastating power. Not only that, but former Tyson Team member, Bald Bull, has resurfaced, which was compounded by the fact that there are rumors he is not in the tournament to win, but was there in order to show people what the Suicide Bull Rush really meant.  It appears he has had enough of being gut punched, and plans to get even!

What is the story behind the mysterious Little Mac Clones? Who will become the next Punch-Out!! Heavyweight champion?  Is there more to this story then means the eye? There are so many questions to be answered, for now all that can be said is:

Let’s get ready for some Punch-Out!!

Some notes:

This has been an interesting experiment, and it appears that VGchartz is WAY off when it comes to predicting hardware sales, while game sales they seem to nail within 15% of VGchartz which I think is pretty impressive considering they do not have the funding nor the resources of a NPD and are a free to everyone. Yeah there are two games where they called way off with those being The Show on PS3 and Wii PLay but overally their numbers were around 15%. After taking the average based on BNM numbers they are within 11.25% of NPD if you eliminate the outlier numbers on each side of the percentage results (the Show and Halo Wars) and 13.5% if you add in the outliers. That is pretty dang impressive IMO. (Feel free to check my averaging skills, I don't pretend to be an expert!).

We also have to note that VGchartz is not estimating NPD numbers but actual, and considering NPD gives a + or - 5% or so that means the VGchartz numbers can be either closer or farther away.

We'll see what changes as I continue down the top 20 list. So far it looks like if you choose to use VGchartz as a reference you should figure in the percentage difference between NPD numbers. So if you are willing to allow wiggle room in estimating a games total units of around 15% you should be fine. Also it seems safe to say that their lifetime figures should be accurate since they do adjust numbers each month to match NPD, just remember to figure in the non-NPD month with what appears to be the %15 accuracy for North American sales.

Additional notes on VGchartz Accuracy from IGN:

According to Matt on the 5/6 edition of NVC, developers refer people to VC chartz for Wiiware/DSi Ware sales because they are fairly accurate. Which is good to know since there is no other way to get these numbers indicating, if true (and I am not on the silly hate IGN bandwagon) indicates VGchartz does have sources inside the development community.

VGchartz analysis of the margin of error

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=3621

My problem with this is that their numbers do not match what I pulled from their site. I'll have to see next month about this NPD Preview. They may modify their numbers at the end of the month and put it in a feature.

Ewww

This month (april) isn't looking good in regards to accuracy they were way off in regards to Pokemon and other titles.

I just picked the game, haven't gotten a chance to play it but considering the first game is still one of my favorite Sandbox titles (far more enjoyable then even GTAIV), I had to pick up the sequel which takes a more strategic approach to the genre. Anyone else getting this?

General Gaming / I luv my iPhone 3G!

Today I got my new iPhone and I really love the features it has (better then my ancient, 3.5+ year old phone). Do you guys happen to know what games are worth getting? It is really overwhelming when you look at both the free stuff and the pay stuff.

Nintendo Gaming / Trivial Pursuit for Wii
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:13:45 PM »
I am willing to bet I'm the only that is picking this up, but after the GREAT Smarty Pants from EA I could not help but to be excited on their translation of the popular board game. For those of you unaware, Smarty Pants was released in 2007 in the fall, and was so comprehension when it came to questions that we have NEVER gotten a repeat question even after 40+ hrs of playtime (It had like 22k) because it saves the stats to your Mii. It wasn't the most complex game out there in regards to technology but was clear and did what it set out to do quite well with some fun uses of the WIimote sprinkled in.

ANYWAY, I'm definately going to take this over to my moms and I'm sure we'll have a blast. I'll make sure to keep all you casual game haters posted (along with those non-casual game haters!).

General Gaming / I think my PS2 Slim is broked

After having it unplugged for several months I hooked everything up and when I hit the power button the green light comes on for like a second, then turns red again. Sad stuff.

Nintendo Gaming / Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles

Not sure if you guys have been following it but there is supposedly an upcoming announcement of another RE game for Wii owners. Personally I'm hoping for a RE2 remake (Ok my first hope is an original non on-rails game).

Nintendo Gaming / Peggle Dual Shot
« on: March 05, 2009, 04:01:55 PM »
Before last week I knew nothing of Peggle, but after hearing praise for it on NVC I had to try it out. The game is GREAT and easily one of the most addicting games on DS. In case you don't know what it is, it is a weird blend of Pachinko, block breaker, and bust a move. The object of each board (the game has TONS of different boards along with special power pegs) is to eliminate all the orange pegs which are surrounded by green ones (along with other obstacles as you progress), you control your Peggle gun with either the d-pad or stylus and aim it. When you shoot the ball it will drop through the various pegs, each one it hits is eliminate from the board. You have 10 shots total to eliminate all the orange pegs (You can get an extra ball if your ball lands in the moving basket at the bottom of the screen.

It is a blast and I am sure most of you will enjoy it. It is a fully featured package with various modes and boards.

General Gaming / Empire: Total War
« on: March 02, 2009, 09:28:54 PM »
This board doesn't get nearly enough PC love so why not bring up one of the biggest PC games this year, the next iteration of the Total War series. In many ways the series reminds me so much of the game that got me interested in the RTS genre, which was the amazing Myth (Not Myst the point and Click Adventure!) 1, and 2 Bungie (Myth 3 was made by someone else). Instead of forcing you to base build, Myth allowed you to focus on what was the most fun, and yes engaging (at least to me) part of the genre, which is is strategy and troop placement along with what kinds of troops you wish to use. Total War expands on this idea, forming some of the most spectacular battles ever in an RTS.

So is anyone else excited to pick up this next iteration of Empire: Total War? All I have to say is....YEAH FOR NAVAL BATTLES!

I am wondering if this system is worth buying? Are there any games that you guys would recommend? It is a system I missed out on and it looks like it was a well made handheld.

General Chat / Soda: Fountain vs Bottle vs Can
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:29:19 PM »
My curiosity has gotten the best of me and I must know how weird I really am (Ok how much MORE weird I really am), but when you guys drink soda (if you drink soda) which "form" do you prefer. For me I love it out of the fountain though it depends on the place though, I can't stand 7'11's drinks but on the flip side I'll almost go out of my way to go to Fred Meyer to get a diet Pepsi or a Quiznos because it is fizzy goodness. My second choice is the bottle and the final one would be the pop can.

What we are looking at are the cumulative Wii and DS sales through the end of 2008. Wii has been selling at industry’s record pace so far, and with new customers acquired by the gaming population expansion efforts, it is not impossible for Wii’s total sales to exceed the final install base of PS2. Wii still has much more room for expansion. We can expect more sales of software in the next fiscal year than in the current year. With what kind of software is Nintendo going to achieve this goal? Well, it will be shown at E3 to be held in the U.S. this June.

So prepare for software HYPE-rdrive.

Nintendo Gaming / SimAnimals needs love

No topics for SimAnimals makes me sad. I was actually intrigued when they previewed it (I think it was E3). Well I guess it is out now and hopefully it is fun.

As promised Matt at IGN has revealed a "dark" game today.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/946/946492p1.html

Looks like it had potential, it is too bad the 3rd party restrictions held this game down. After a promising effort in Geist, n-space deserved at least one more shot (Preferably with a bigger budget).

Not sure how many of you heard but Gene Roddenberry's widow passed away today. It is truly sad to see this, I enjoyed her character quite a bit as Deanna Troy's mother, and I am sure other Star Trek fans will be disheartened by the news.

General Gaming / Afrika Coming to the USA thanks to National Geographic
« on: December 03, 2008, 09:19:19 PM »
I have to say I am so thrilled to see this game coming to America. Ever since I seen it first previewed for the PS3 I was dieing to have it. For awhile it looked like there was little chance we would get an English version but now it has been made possible by National Geographic.
