If this does turn out to be related to the REV then imagine the posibilities. Multiplayer games could benefit from this. Besides being able to play online, LAN gaming could become that much easier. Imagine if this NEC product is able to send the signal to mutliple recievers as bigjim stated. You can in a way, have someone play on the TV, someone on a monitor, another on thier DS and so on.  It'll be great if the signal for each players screen could then be sent to thier monitor of choice. Also, using the DS in conjunction with the REV would allow for easier browsing when online as a result of using the touch screen.

Word, had forgotten about pokemon.  I think that would fit the series perfect since it'll match the anime to a T lol.  Its good to see some upcoming rpgs use cell shading.  I think cell shading gave Namco's ToS that oldschool look while still being modern and state of the art.

You know what I'll love to see.  The next Mario game to use an enhanced version of the cell animation from Wind Waker.  I think that'll fit in nicely with a Mario game.

I'm guessing the media is doing what its doing becuase there is so little Rev info that they'll print whatever they can get wind of.  I don't know if I've read any confermations though, all I remember is people saying that a source in some developer blah blah blah.  That could all be taken with a grain of salt.

I'd love another cell shaded zelda but to pull another stunt and make this upcomming zelda cell shaded in secret will kill the posobility of Nintend grabbing the attention of anyone outside of the zelda fanbase.   To suprise us at E3 with new cell shaded footage of the upcoming zelda will do more damage than good.

I'll like to see a cell shaded Zelda on the DS since from what I heard, the DS is capable of producing cell shaded graphics with ease.  A cell shaded Zelda on the DS won't cause such an uproar too.

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling that the Rev will have a very strong launch lineup.  As for western developers not having any, that could be as a result of the Rev coming out here later than in Japan.  Also, I forgot where I read it, but one of the rumors going around about the touch screen controller was supposed to have come from a worker in EA.  I'm guessing that some studios in the US could have developement kits.  I wouldn't find it hard to believe that EA would have them.

Yeah, agentseven has been around for as long as I can remember lol.  I think there is some truth to what he says, I've never known him to be the type to get us all excited for nothing.  Damn E3 can't take any longer lol.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New Iwata quotes

Alright people, go have a drink and relax.  I don't know why everyone has to overanalyze everything Nintendo says then twist it in some way or another to become something negative.

As for the online debate.  Think of it this way, the DS is supposed to give a look at where Nintendo is going with their online ideas.  SquareEnix is helping them in some way or another as Miyamoto has stated.  If Squareenix is willing to invest its time, money, and effort behind Nintendo for its online service, I'm sure it isn't some extremely basic LAN gaming.  Also, Gamespy is helping develope the online aspect of the DS.  I'm sure Nintendo isn't paying Gamespy to develope some extremely basic LAN network

As for the controller debate, who knows what it is.  Anyone's guess is as good as the next man's.  Nintendo has been the only company to set the standards for controllers so I'll just go on and assume they know what they're doing

As for Nintendo neglecting their core audience  in favor of "non gamers", don't worry so much.  I'm sure Nintendo will continue outsourcing games in order to have these genres filled.  This will leave them to continue doing what they do best (supporting us hardcore fans) while still being able to support the "non gamers".

Anyways, on to the good news that I got from the article.  I'm loving the fact that Iwata has been suprised at the responce they have recieved from developers.  In this current genneration where graphics and tech are all that developrs seem to be worried about, its good to see that developers are showing a positive responce to this Revolution concept.  Nintendo must be doing something right.  We'll find out soon enough though.

Yeah, leave voice acting out of RPGs is what I say.  I don't know why the media is diein for voice acting (matt from IGN as someone stated)  I believe the more advanced games get, the less attached we are to them.  Like others have said, everything thats not included ingame is left to the imagination.  The imagination is what makes games unique to all of us.  Its why we look back so fondly at the oldschool games.  I hated the transition RPGs took when it went over to Playstation.  I remember a time where I oculd custom name every member in an rpg.  I would name all the males after me and my freinds and all the females after girls I knew (the main girl that I knew the hero was goin to get I would name after a crush I had at the time lol, dam childhood days lol).  Now every character is named, they all have voices, and most of the really good action is presented in cinematics as aposed to some gameplay mechanics.  Basically the game is playing itself.  Everything is being fed to me, there is little left to the imagination anymore.  Anyways, Ive ranted on enough, I hope the new Zelda doesn't use voice acting.

I'd love to see them go back to the overworld from Super Mario World on the SNES.  I used to love the branching pathes and the castles (with thier individual animation after you defeated them).  That game and Mario Bros 3 gave me the feeling as if I was really in the Mario's world.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Router REV?
« on: March 15, 2005, 10:25:34 AM »
I get what your saying, it does seem very unlikely.  As for the Rev coming with a HDD?  I think there is a good posibility it will.  There is a rumor that it will but thats just what it is, a rumor.  The only reason I see them going with a HDD for the Rev is becuase of their dreams and ambitions from the 64DD.  They had alot of good ideas for games that were nevery realized as a result of 64 DD's lack of success.  To me, it seemed as if it was more of an experiment, a learning process.

I remember Nintendo was speaking about ever changing worlds (in the case of Earthbound 64).  Where you can plant a seed and over time, it'll grow into a tree.  This was possible becuase the disks were rewritable so some space was left for the actions and changes you've made in the game.  If the Rev were to include the HDD then it can store this info on the HDD instead of a rewriteable disks like the 64 DD's format.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Legend of Zelda: 2005 Official Discussion
« on: March 13, 2005, 05:39:22 PM »
After looking at the 2 trailers and constant debating in forums, I've come up with an idea that I'll like to put out there, see what everyone thinks about it.  The one thing that seems to stand out from the videos to me is the strong enphasise on animals.  From videos and pictures alone, we have seen Link riding a horse and a boar, Link carrying cats to saftey (I would guess), dogs following Link into a forest as he rides his horse, and a wolf howling at the moon (not to mention the rumor going around of an eagle lol).

All this has got me thinking.  If you look back at all the recent major Zelda games released on N64 and Gamecube, Nintendo always implemented a multipurpose instrument.  OoT and MM had the Ocarina and WW had the baton.  For the sake of arguement, lets say Nintendo were to continue this tradition with the new Zelda.  What if, instead of Link transforming into animals (as some are debating around the internet) Link can use a flute (or any other instrument) in order to control animals.  What if by playing a specific tune, Link can calm a specific beast.  This could serve many purposes.  Link can use a dog to fetch items.  A wolf could be seen as an upgrade from a dog whereas it could fetch but it can also assist you in battles.  I'm sure we can all think of many different animals and their uses if we run with this idea.  Also, I bet Nintendo can build some clever puzzles around this premis.  Remember, WW let you control other characters in dungeons.  What if this is an extention to that.  Either controlling the animals or giving them a set of commands using the direction pad (similar to the visors in MP)

164
Its interesting but I doubt this is it.  Nintendo has been talking about simplifying things, making games more accesable to non gamers (touch screen gaming for example)  Nintendo has been talking about taking games back to its roots, this just sounds overly complex, especially for non gamers.

well I'm assuming it wont since the ps3 and Rev wont be out for another yr.  Porting a yr old game for their release ain't going to look so hot.  Xbox 2 is getting a version becuase its coming out sometime this yr.  Anyways, its EA, I wouldnt be suprised if they did eventually release a version for ps3 and Rev further down the road.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What gamers want in the next Nintendo system
« on: February 09, 2005, 10:39:12 PM »
I still believe everyone is asking for way too much from Nintendo.  I agree with some of your points that Nintendo has alot of things to fix but your asking them to be perfect in a sense.  Sony and MS have all these games becuase they have to, they don't have any true long lasting franchises that their consumers are expecting from them or have come to know them by.  Nintendo has their franchise games to develope, consumers expect these games from them so they have to put time and money aside for them.   It seems to me that you want Nintendo to fill in every possible gap yet still also provide their unique games.

Sony has every angle covered by default simpley becuase of their user base.  They don't really have to do much.  I'm not even going to get into the pc in a box that is the xbox.  The xbox is nothing more than a fps's dreambox.  It does have some unique exclusive role playing games like KOTOR 1 and 2 and fable (which isn't all its cracked up to be) but beyond Halo (grossly overrated), there is little reason to really invest in an Xbox.

Also, don't forget that we are to blaim for alot of Nintendo's 3rd party problems.  Gamecube consumers are notoriously known to not support quality 3rd party software.  I think a big reason in this is becuase Gamecube owners are either multi console owners or diehard Nintendo fans that aren't interested in anything outside of Nintendo.

Personally though, I believe Nintendo has learned somewhat from this generation.  If the rumors are to be believed, I don't think Nintendo is going to go skimpy on the optical disk's space this coming gen, there will be an ethernet port right out the box and their lineup will be more diversafied.  Nintendo has been outsourcing alot of its games lately so you have to figure they putting time elsewhere.  The 3rd party problem is something they need to work on and we need to support.  All they can do is provide us with the games, its up to us to actually buy them.  Forget 2nd party, they come and go, Nintendo has an eye out for quality teams so I'm sure this next gen we'll see the next SK and Rare.  Remember, whoever thought Retro would be as good as they are.  Speaking of Rare, let it go, there are a mere shadow of what they once were.  They are the only company that takes longer than Nintendo to develope games and the quality isn't even up there anymore.  SK was a good team but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of them on Nintendo hardware, besides we have to see if they can are the real deal.  All we've expereinced from them lately is ED (a gem no doubt) and a remake of MGS.

I understand everyone's complaints ( I feel the pain lol, I'm a diehard Nintendo fanboy yet also a multi console owner) and I ain't trying to be a d*ck, but you have to be realistic sometimes.  Change can not happen overnight.  Nintendo is changing for the better.  Look at the complaints the N64 had.  Nintendo fixed the cartridge prob, we've recieved more 3rd party support (Squareenix, Namco and Capcom are putting ing much stronger support compared to then) and 1st party titles aren't taking as long as they used to.

Question for Noble Feather that I think he could answer as it doesn't have anything to do with spilling secrets and whatnot lol.  Since the Rev is supposed to be taking a different route than your usual consoles, how is this going to affect mutli platform releases.  Is Nintendo's Revolutionary features going to hinder or enhance ported games?  I was just wondering cuase I still want my sports games like Madden (NFL 2k wouldve been my choice though, damn bastards that are EA) and 2k basketball to be represented on the Rev without taking a hit in quality or playability.

Once Square merged with Enix, Sony's influence in the company dropped to the point that they don't have much control over them anymore.  They are not the biggest shareholder in Squareenix so the company is free to go wherever it pleases.

3d display without goggles is already possible, look up the Sharp 3d lcd screen.  Also, am I the only one willing to go through the "hassle" in order to experience true 3d gaming?  Is everyone so content with playing games on a tv that they won't accept 3 dimensional gaming unless its presented to them in a perfect solution with no problems whatsoever.  If you think about it, today's set up for entertainment will never work once 3d displays are the norm.  Thats becuase todays entertainment setups are designed around tvs.  There is going to be a hassle when converting over to true 3d displays.  Theres no way around it.

Anyways, a 17 inch display isn't too small as long as the view is panned out to where you can see a good amount of the playing feild.  It may not be up close and detailed as we are used to but its good enough considering its true 3d.

EDIT: Well after another thorough read through, this time using the images whenever the text called for it, I've come to realize that the naysayers are right, this has nothing to do with a 3d display for Rev.  They are just talking about a specific prog for a camera angle.  I don't see what the point of the patent is.  I'm sure Sony (or any other company) can find a loophole in all this and create practically the same thing for their games.

Do you mean the images don't show up or they are showing up too small?  Also, IGN.Cube has some of the images up also and a short article on this rumor if you care to go see.  The links have been working for me, they just tend to show up small where then I'd have to click on the risize icon on the bottom right of the image.

EDIT: Okay, I noticed what was wrong with the address I proviced.  The links should be fixed now.  Also, I got some new ideas to throw in about this patent but I'll post that in a few, dont wan't to keep double posting and re editing lol.

From what I read on the patent, I'm not sure if they will be using the Sharp LCD for this or a projector.  The last Image I posted on my previous post has what seems to be an initial piont (light ?) shining down through the top "frame" all the way down to the display "frame".  This leads me to think that there are implying a projector of sorts.

Shy guy, when we speak of the 3d display we mean in actual 3d.  The difference from the 3d we have now, ie RE4, is that in RE4 the 3d is being displayed on the tv.  With the setup that I believe is being explained on the patent, the 3d will come out as if a hologram.  Any action going on within the game will be displayed right in front of you.  Just imagine Star Wars and how they have hologram messages where the person would seem to come out of the ground and be in front of you (although in Star Wars its in a much larger scale than what seems to be mentioned in this patent)

Sorry for double posting but I have more info.  Over in the N-sider forums, a member provided the following link of a patent Nintendo filed.

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=2%204&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01&S1=nintendo.AS.&OS=an/nintendo&RS=AN/nintendo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/mentallyerect/image1.jpg

The following is my thoery on what the patent is talking about.  If you look at the first image, you can notice one character has x,y,z labeled next to them. The x,y,z is representing the 3 axis that are used when refering to the third dimention in math. It seems that the top "frame" displays the 2d y and z axis while the bottom one, in relation to the top, displays the full 3d image (x,y,z). Take a look at this quote from the abstract.

"The first frame 77 is set so that selected objects 81 through 84 are positioned inside of the first frame 77 when viewed from a direction of the line of sight. Furthermore, the first frame 77 is deformed in accordance with movements of the selected objects 81 through 84. Specifically, when all of the selected objects 81 through 84 are a predetermined distance away from one side of the frame 77 when viewed in the direction of the line of sight, the side is moved toward the inside of the first frame 77, thereby deforming the first frame 77. "

What I get from that is that in the main frame (77, the bottom frame where I believe the characters would seem to be in 3d) when you move said characters ( 81-84) accross to the end of the frame, the image will, as they call it, distort. By distort, I believe they mean that the whole image will move on foward and the characters instead of being at the end of the frame, will then be in the beginning. An example I can think of is Animal Crossing or Zelda: Link to the Past, where the world is split into grids, when you move from one area to another, the camera would pan over to display the next grid. This is how I envision this 3d display. When you reach the end of the 3d frame, the frame would adjust to show the next grid.

Further along, they make mention of multiplayer games and how they could be inplemented into this display. They basically said the frame would expand much like a camera zooms out, in order to show the full playfeild and all playable characters.

Page 4 is just another demonstration of the 3d plane/"frame".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/mentallyerect/image2.jpg

Page 7 seems to show the secome 2d plane that only displays the x and y axis thats slightly above the playing frame.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/mentallyerect/image3.jpg

The rest of the pages/images seem to show off how the frame would display mutliplayer games. Also, they mention coordinates alot within the images further establishing the idea of a true 3 dimentional plane since coordinates is a way to pinpoint areas in an x,y,z plane.

Other pages of note are 18, and 21-22 (descriptions of images on all pages)
18 shows what I believe to be the projection of the image through the screens

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/mentallyerect/image4.jpg

Another good quote is

"BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] 1. Field of the Invention

[0002] The present invention relates to game systems and game programs that cause a game space to be displayed on a display device and, more specifically, to a game system and a game program that changes a display area according to positions of objects. "

Well, thats how I interpretted what I saw and read off the patent. My guess is that this was originally thought up as an add-on for the gamecube but now is being moved on towards the Rev. The current rumors of a dual processor on a Rev could be to better display these 2 frames. I believe this is so becuase Nintendo always puts alot of thought into the design of their systems. They will not go wit a dual processor just to up the graphics, there has to be a purpose for the decision and I think this 3d display patent could be it.

Also, some on the other forum are arguing that this patent is in relation to Zelda:Four Swords.  Here's a quote from one of the other members there.

"1) Considering the GameCube is pictured...

2) Considering little guys with swords are pictured...

3) Considering the individuals who registered the patent worked on Four Swords Adventures....

4) Considering Four Swords Adventures uses a different screen setup to display player's screens... (thanks Z64)

5) The logical conclusion to come to would be that (sorry to poop on the parade) this has absolutely nothing directly to do with the Revolution -- but rather Four Swords Adventures on the Nintendo GameCube. That's not to say Nintendo won't utilize this technology for the next generation...but I highly doubt this patent is specifically for it."

My thoughts on this were.....
The Gamecube being pictured just makes me think this was an addon planned for the Gamecube originally. Remember, at one point, Nintendo said they wanted to extend the life of the Gamecube by providing add ons to enhance the experience.

The use of guys with swords in the pictures is just to better illustrate video games. Knights and dragons are commonly associated to games and fantasy. It's universal, when someone sees it, they picture role playing as a main character. They picture a game, board game or video game. If they had put a cruid drawing of a guy jumping and turtles or goombas on the plane, it'll be too specific to a particular game. The use of illustrations of guys with guns would be too violent. The guy with the sword, archer, pendent/item and dragon were just used for illustration purposes.

The tie ins with Zelda: Four Swords is there but I'm not completely sold on it. Zelda: FS was released June 7th and this patent was put forth on July 21st, a month later. Also, the images on the patent have a date on top for Jan 27th 2005. I'm not sure if thats the date the images were added onto the patent though. I hope someone can give me further info on this date. This just further supports my idea that this was created first as a Gamecube addon to extend its life but now is being expanded upon for an unknown (to us) purpose.

If you think about it, this can tie in to the Rev. A true 3d display can revolutionize things. They won't even have to match the graphics quality of the competition. High end graphics will not be able to compete with a true 3d display. The rumors so far are sudjesting that they are not using new tech but are using something that hasn't been applyed to games yet. Also, the talk of the dual processor makes me wonder. If Nintendo were to go with a dual processor design, there has to be a reason or purpose behind the move. The dual processor design is not just there to up graphics. The gyro/motion controller rumor also would fit into this type of gaming, moreso than on the tradition 3d games on a 2d television gaming.

Also, 3d can't be that far off as everyone claims. I remember playing a Sega fighting game at the arcades back in the 90s that used holograms to create a 3d display. The fighters would seem to stand out of the bottom screen. That was back in the 90s though, technology has advanced since then. Anyways, I'm just brainstorming, I'm not exactly sure what can or can not (realistically and economically) be done for a next gen home console.
