TalkBack / Re: FEATURES: Whither Now, Samus Aran?
« on: July 13, 2008, 10:25:55 PM »
I think the biggest problem surrounding Metroid is how it's being consistently retconned. The Prime sub-series did that and still doesn't take the series forward. Fusion did however but then pretty much neutered the entire series in the process.

Nintendo has a really stubborn attitude towards story in games. I support that the focus of a game should be in other aspects of course but it wouldn't hurt to hire some writers and make a decent story, making an effort towards it wouldn't delay terribly the game and would make the experience a whole lot better.

Quote
and Nintendo would do well to take the series in a new direction now that Metroids have become extinct, and perhaps start answering a few questions about the main character.

And at the same time... NO, NO, NO!

On one side is my fear of the absolute ineptitude from Retro and Nintendo of making interesting characters and engaging stories, what they did to Samus and her universe from Zero Mission to Corruption was pretty appalling, and the other is that one of Samus coolest features is precisely the mystery behind her. This somewhat contradicts what I said before and that's why I clarified, if you don't know how to do it at least hire someone who does, writers should be as important as graphic's artists in video game development.

And stealth is awesome, so KDR is completely wrong :P the implementation in ZM was less than stellar but the atmosphere in the games is about loneliness and suspense, nothing makes that better than stealth gameplay and I would love if they actually put some effort into it. Personally the stealth in ZM seemed to me more as an excuse to get Samus naked in order to capture the loser otaku culture of Japan, the country with honestly the worst taste in games.

With all that said, I have to add that the ones who should shoot themselves is all of you whiny people who want Metroid to die. The Metroid experience is way too scarce and amazing to be calling for a rest of the series, we barely get a bad copy of it with the metroidvanias.

Christ I was determined to ignore the game since I had enough with just Wild World but now you make it sound so awesome.

I would certainly love the ability to transfer your AA:WW character to the wii, its probably the only way I would pick up my little guy again and start mailing "the raven" verse by verse to all the town folk.

Indeed, my reference is SDTV.

I will plug the wii directly into the AV as I said which will make me see the difference more clearly. I'm glad however to finally be able to play in widescreen.

What!? I thought it was th 18th. Its already going to happen next tuesday?

ok I just wasted $60 on those damn component cables.

Seriously, I was expecting at least some improvement, but the games look even more jagged than before! what the hell am I doing wrong? The new HDTV we got has so far been a disappointment. I'm going to try a more direct comparison with simple AV cable to at least try to justify the waste of money.

Unexpected?  We've known about this for a week.

Even after a month my reaction would be the same, "WTF!!??".

am I the only one who loves the whipping with the sacred beans (or whatever they are called)? its kind of creepy how this game seems tailored for the remote. It makes me think a Castlevania wii could work, no matter how much hate the idea gets from gamers.

It looks like some crazy f-zero spinoff, so I'm interested.

EDIT
after watching the video I retract my statement, is painfully slow! (compared to f-zero) but the ships have some cool designs, I'm still interested but with a different mindest.

I love mirror's edge, but that is because theres finally a dev doing something new with first person perspective.

About the blurriness, I think is a "feature", its worse in the ps2 original, I think some people call it "ink bleeding"? The game looks great so I'm not really complaining, but I wouldn't mind getting rid of it.

TalkBack / Re: 'Wii Would Like to Play' Ad Campaign Wins Effie Award
« on: June 09, 2008, 11:17:14 AM »
The ads were just horrible. I firmly believe the games and the console sold despite the ads, not because. However marketing on a bigger scale, like the appearances on shows (I remember ellen and good morning america I think?) were a good strategy that actually worked.

I stil can't decide if I like more the ps2 look or the wii look. The wii is too saturated honestly, but some color is welcomed in a community so damn "brown" that it goes nuts because a game has some hints of red and yellow (see: reaction to mirror's edge trailer around the internet)

I've always heard this game getting mentioned but for some odd reason I always thought it was a fighting game.

Lol. Do you think you were confusing it with Fatal Fury?

lol thats the one

Me likes!

I've always heard this game getting mentioned but for some odd reason I always thought it was a fighting game.

Now the gameplay of the previous games from what I've seen in youtube seems atrocious but with Nintendo behind the game it can only do wonders for it. I always was interested in games of this style, like Silent Hill, but I don't know how the ps1 and 2 managed to make gameplay such an awful pain, those tank controls were so horrible! thank goodness something like the remote exists now.

Thanks! I had some superficial knowledge of the numbers so I threw the hypothesis without much back up but I knew I wasn't that far off. Now it would be interesting to compare software sales I won't , I'm lazy

Then you should have played the game a year ago like everyone else.

The funny thing is that I bought it but I never could bring myself to finish it, it's pretty much the only time something like that has happened to me with a Nintendo game.

I think I'm the only one who sees wii/ds and hardcore gaming going hand in hand even now. For starters all of us here can't claim to be "casual", we post in internet gaming forums and know names like Aonuma or Mikami. "Hardcore" is just the level of investment you put into something, The sims can be the most "casual" Pc game ever but just go to one of the crazy forums when there are people completely dedicated to make extremely detailed dresses, quality designed furniture and complex hairstyles, if that isn't hardcore I don't know what is. It's perfectly logical that "hardcore" wiisports fans exist.

The real problem with gaming is its niche status, not how "hardcore" or "casual" some gamers are. Nintendo does the real solution which is expanding the audience, and does so by making something accessible, again accessible doesn't mean whether something is hardcore or not, pacman is accessible, but can be as hardcore as what the player wants it to be.

This is the only way the gaming industry has any future, the reason obscure indie films or creepy odd japanese manga exist is because their respective markets are so damn huge that they can support niche things with little appeal. Only a small percentage of people would like this material, but the audience is big enough to reach enough people to pay back the costs of producing these things. If gaming doesn't increases its market it will just implode, small studios would had no chance whatsoever and we would be facing another crash. (I'm almost sure that without the wii we would be in the middle of one right about now, at least in Japan).

Its so frustrating the "hardcore" don't understand this is needed for their games to survive, specially with the kind of budgets "hardcore" games need.

It sounds like spy kids, and if its half as awesome as the movies I'll buy the game in a second If you don't realize why those movies were so awesome you suck

I'm definitely interested, shooting and slicing seem obvious gameplay mechanics but mixing?, gliding? I'm very intrigued, I think it can be really awesome.

Indeed. As fanboy mentality is expected but that actual companies inverting big bucks in gaming still have this mentality is almost inconceivable. How stupid can you get?
