I don't think that's the publicity they want, though.

MS slung mud at Nintendo, mocking them on the official xbox website with flash animations even, and I think that strategy did help them to become #2 ahead of Nintendo.

Image is just too much of a deciding factor in American buying decisions. That's the only reason the PSP has any sales in the US at all (it sure as hell ain't games...).

Yeah, I guess I can respect that more as a marketing decision. My thought was that they seem to be pushing away from the hardcore in an attempt to capture more market. Ideally, they'd try to acquire more without losing or falling away from the current market.

I think they could have come up with a name that would have been big and daring without sounding diminutive or be on the receiving end of many jokes.

Given that there's zero guarantee that this audience is going to be captured, I don't think Nintendo's in the position to burn any bridges just yet.

The DS is a runaway success in Japan where it did reach the untapped audience, but I don't think it's done anywhere near the same damage in the US where people aren't nearly as hung up on electronics.

If 1 of every 5 girls owned a DS and Nintendogs, I'd have to agree, but since that's far from the case, I don't think there's any reason the Rev will do in the US what the DS did in Japan: reach the untapped market.

Besides, getting the Rev into the home is half the battle, and whether that happens because of little Billy buying one or reaching the untapped market is irrelevant.

If Billy buys a Rev, his mother will be far more inclined to pick up the Bob Roth painting game for it.

The real truth about peoples reaction to the Wii-name

I hope that this article will effectively end any further discussion about namechanges. There aren“t going to be any.

Where in that article do they address the American view on the name?

I agree with Pap that I want it to be a success, but I think that, if the system becomes at all successful in the US, Sony and MS will probably make ads mocking and tearing it down, and I hate to say it, but in the US media, mudslinging works.

With a name like "wee", it'll be immensely easy to make people self-conscious about buying one and, like I've said before, discouraging customers from buying your competitor's products is just as good as encouraging them to buy yours.

On further investigation, I think the survey is fake.

The last question doesn't make any sense and it was supposedly sent in by an "anonymous tipster".

Once the product is out and IF it does do what is promised for gaming, that smug look will be rubbed right off their face.

Truth be told, with games like Red Steel at the forefront, I thought it was becoming exponentially more difficult to mock Nintendo.

I think the "wee" name unfortunately reopens that door, and it's not just me talking to a GS clerk that I'm worried about, it's that, when it's universally accepted to mock a company, it's rare that someone will buy their products. I'm quite certain that Nintendo being mocked this past gen greatly reduced their sales. When someone is on the fence about buying something, it's not hard for image to be what finally tips them.

I'd think something as simple as "Don't open your product up for mockery" would be learned in marketing 101. If people don't respect the product (starting with the name), how will they ever be swayed to buy it?

Let's face it though, if you are going to let a stupid Gamestop employee embarass you for asking about it, maybe you should A) Go some place else B) Live with it. The GS employees pretty much smirked at me when I asked about the Revolution, so honestly I don't see much changing. Besides once the knee jerk reactions are over I really don't think your ego is going to be damaged much for asking to reserve it.

It's not a question of ego: I don't look to GS employees for acceptance, but I don't want to have to turn the other cheek, either (on a bad day, I'd punch the guy).

Why give your console a name where such a thing is even remotely possible? If there's even a slim chance that your customers will be laughed at for buying the thing, then you've picked a sh*tty name and should probably reconsider.

It just makes it harder to be a Nintendo fan. I don't need some assh*le at Gamestop smirking at me when I ask him for a game on the "wee". I deal with enough idiots on a daily basis as it is (GS employees already tend to be Sony/MS fanboys. This will just make them even MORE unbearable).

As for the discussion, I'd be far, far less hostile toward the name if it wasn't a real word which we use every day already. I like Wist (wireless interactive sensory technology) or any other invented word.

The best way to put it is to ask yourself this: were there any hate threads when the name Revolution was announced? Was there an outcry from gamers the world over? Did messageboards erupt into flame? Did Nintendo's feedback system crash?

No, and thus it's safe to say that people didn't think "Revolution" was this bad.

I don't think they'd have to say anything (you can pay them less if they don't talk).

Just show them using the controller and show what's happening on screen.

Even in the flash animation, it features one i in the beginning.  Red Steel, by all appearances, is very much a single player oriented game.  There will be multiplayer, but not only that.

I don't mean to say that single player won't be there: there will ALWAYS be games which exist better as single player experiences. I'm just saying that any game which CAN have online multiplayer likely will and that Pal shouldn't be surprised if it sometimes gets more love than the single player (ala MPH).

If they marketed it like it was virtual reality, then I think it'd do MUCH better.

"Nintendo brings VR home!" would certainly catch a LOT of eyes, gamer or not.

Truthfully, I think something so straight forward and honest would be ideal. I don't know about "Game", but something like "Experience" (The Nintendo Expereince), or maybe "Wist" (wireless interactive sensory technology). If they're going to invent a word, I think the word should have its own unique place in the language and then become recognized afterward by its name (like iPod).

And I hope they spend more money marketing the wii than they've ever spent on marketing, period.

The better question is, how can they call a game generic garbage when they don't own it or play it online where it's meant to be played?

I've stopped listening to rumors. E3 isn't far off, and I'm more interested to hear the other half of the wii story right now (and there had better be a 2nd half to the story...).

I think Jason is most accurate: the Wii will have a terrible launch in the US but do well in Japan and (hopefully) build steam like the DS did and gradually force its way into American markets.

I'm not speaking for Nos and I haven't seen many of his posts, but the first comment is in reference to your definition of "annoying" in that it seems to be every time someone disagrees.

I wouldn't be saying this stuff if I didn't believe it. I don't think a weird name was necessary or even remotely warranted. I think it clouds the issue when the issue should JUST be the games.

I hope E3 reveals more about why they picked the name and some marketing strategy.

I think I want to hear about marketing more than ANYTHING because it'll make or break them. Do you at least see where I'm coming from with the marketing issue?

Come on "what"?

You don't think that some solid online plans aren't likely in place to go along with the whole "we" togetherness mentality?

Paladin likely has a lot of games which he didn't want to see have online play with online play coming out for the Rev.

See, I've been wondering this right along.

Yeah, we all know how annoying dissenting opinions are.

I understand you like the name, but you haven't exactly been either convincing nor civil in your attempts to persuade others to your opinion.

Two posts ago, you called me a liar by insisting that I didn't ask anyone. I've talked to at least 5 people on the subject, and all I've said is, "The new Nintendo console is called the "wee". "

I know you don't want to believe it because it derails the fanboy train, but their reaction was immediately "WTF are they THINKING?"

The problem is, you and I and everyone else on this board have had time to mull over the name. We've had time to gauge it. We've slept on it and had time to get used to the name, often eliciting a different reaction at a later time.

What you and the other Wii supporters don't seem to realize is that, for MANY potential buyers, their first reaction will be their ONLY reaction, that people will look at it, say, "The why? That's retarded." and go look at other consoles. Even if they DO try the console, they'll likely have a preconceived negative reaction from the name and thus not give the console a fair chance.

Nintendo is about games. Giving their new console some bizarre marketing gimm!ck for a name distracts from that. The name has to be explained before a person even knows how to pronounce it. If that's not a gimm!ck, what is?

Look, I'm done arguing about it, and rather than make a snide comment about my opinions, I'd prefer that we could just agree to disagree. I think the name is a mistake on their part, and I'd LOVE to be wrong, but sitting here slinging mud at each other isn't going to change a thing.
