First of all, it's not this board I'm worried about. It's the remainder of the world who, coincidentally, Nintendo says they're trying to market to, who I'm worried about.

Second, "wee" IS a common synonym for urinating in some European territories. It's clear Nintendo didn't consider the connotations indifferent languages.

Yes, I am serious.  Did you read my post?  Saying the word revolution needs to be explained to anyone who speaks English is ridiculous.  The word Machine in "Rage Against the Machine" never needed explaining, and in that case, machine didn't even mean actual mechanical machines, but it was a symbol, a monicker for worldwide governing, the powers that be, which with your argument should have been harder for people to grasp, right?  Afterall, in this case, the word isn't even associated with the first thought that comes to peoples minds when they hear it.  But it is obvious, just as revolution is.   Humans have pretty substantial deductive reasoning for the most part, and our brains inform us what makes sense, and in what context, long before we actually dwell upon it.  I believe it's called common sense.

People know what "Revolution" means, but they don't know that it's a Revolution in gaming.

However, they won't know what "Wii" is, either and I doubt they'll care very much. I think people overestimate the effect that strange marketing tactics have on today's populace.

People are gradually being trained to simply ignore advertising altogether. Without a massive ad campaign, the word "Wii" will do nothing.

That's a good point.

If there was any outcry from the g ay community, they'd likely just point out, "He's hitting on women." and the argument would be nullified.

Meanwhile, the suggestion would go through unhindered.

I guess the only thing stopping either in such a 'genuine threat' situation would be pride and admitting that Nintendo was right, AGAIN.

Oh, they'll more than likely have Revmotes of their own come next gen, but this gen, you'll see them bashing Nintendo in an attempt to not lose ground to them.

Just like the Crash Bandicoot commercials where he was outside Nintendo HQ mocking Mario and then later went all console, including Gamecube.

Know what? I did one of those things where I can predict the outcome with just a bit more thinking on the matter.

The truth is, the comments will come after the reaction is gauged, and if the wee fails, everyone will blame it on the name.

If Nintendo starts to look like a genuine threat or, god knows, pull into the lead, you can count on anti-wee ads popping up.

Sony and MS have nothing to rival what Nintendo is offering so trying to ridicule it will be their only recourse.

Xbox 360: Jump In.

You don't need to even imply homosexuality in that case. Give the guy a regular shirt and subtract lisp and it preys on insecurity just fine. The comparison ad, showing dark and gritty and then bright and fruity gets the point across subtly. Obviously, you can't come right out an say, "That's g ay!" but they can suggest it and still get away with it.

Just suggesting that owing a "wee" will diminish your chances with women (who, from my experience, love Nintendo games) is enough of an insecurity catalyst that many people would be discouraged from buying one.

Better yet, if I were MS or Sony, I'd have the "wee" fanboy, which follows this one poor bastard who goes around asking if anyone wants to play with his "wee" and repeatedly getting the sh!t kicked out of him by men and slapped by women because the name sounds suggestive.

It's a very easy name to make fun of, and that's my primary qualm with it because I think the US market will avoid it like the plague, especially if Nintendo doesn't advertise enough to get the brand name out there.

The name definitely sounds awkward to say.

I feel like I shouldn't be using it to end sentences, knowing how it's pronounced...

I'm curious to see what devs are saying about the name.

Anyone have any quotes or whatnot from notable devs on what they think of it?

Karl, that pun was so bad that I'm sure it killed a kitten.

As for the news, the more the merrier.

I wonder how devs feel about the new name...

Every game is just another client for a giant MMORPG. If you buy a Mario game, you jump around on platforms. Fzero, you race. Zelda, you crawl dungeons

All with millions of people all over the world!

Sorry, Paladin.

Blatent bigotry/intolerance just doesn't fly with adverstisers these days.

Who said anything about "blatant"?

If you make a comparison ad with your games being dark and mature and showing your competitor's alleged games as being colorful and immensely fruity, then yeah, you can get away with suggesting that your competition is for homosexuals via means of suggestive advertising.

I only recall MS doing this on their website, not in television advertising.

Suggestively berating your competition is an age old tactic and will pass cleanly under the noses of any censor.

Stick to the numbers (polygons/triangles/whatnot), the advanced silicon, and multimedia. Is a political leader going to win more votes by making an attack ad, that attacks his opponets name? The opponet is Harry P. Johnson, by the way... Or by attacking his credibity to do the job well?

Easy. You just call everyone who wants Harry Johnson g ay and they won't vote for him out of insecurity.

Exactly.

If they can establish the brand, they'll be fine.

The commercials should just be Reggie screaming at the camera at the top of his lungs, so loud and so intimidating that people won't go for their remotes because they'll be afraid Reggie will be waiting for them on the next channel.

KH2 doesn't need to advertise that much, though: it's a sequel. It already has a fanbase and it isn't selling a radically new and different concept in gaming.

The Rev needs to spread the word like a new religion. They should use the scientology technique and push the console on celebrities so others will mimic them.

Nothing wrong with dating her. It's introducing her to others which you'll likely avoid.

Artiums, meet the DS. It brought in $800 million last year alone.

Aside from that, if properly and ADEQUATELY marketed, they can turn the Wii into the next iPod, and that'll net them billions upon billions.

I'm exaggerating in the amount of ads I mentioned, yes, but not by a lot.

This is Nintendo's last chance at the home console market. In the words of Bon Jovi, "It's now or never."

How can you not like the DS and what it's doing for the market?

I call it like it is, personally. I weigh the consequences of an action through my eyes, Nintendo's eyes, and the eyes of the potential customers.

Fanbase, developer, hater. That's the trinity: the three views which I try to consider.

From Nintendo's view, they believe that "Wii" will go forth, enslave people with morbid curiosity and entice them into a purchase. Creating a buzz and a stir. I believe they're half right.

The hater is likely someone who once liked Nintendo as a kid but was swayed by Sony/MS into believing that Nintendo is for children. They want to be right in believing that Nintendo is the wrong choice, but the thing is, with enough evidence to the contrary, they will come back.

The fanbase is mixed. Some of us like the name, believing in Nintendo's vision. The rest of us are either put off or at least concerned. I fall into the concerned category.

Frankly, I don't want to buy another Gamecube: a system which will experience severe drought through the latter half of its lifespan. The reason for that drought was the fact that sales weren't up to par with those of other consoles AND the perception that Nintendo was aimed at children often turned away developers of mature franchises. It was a compounding problem which ultimately dropped the cube in last place.

I hope the word "wii" doesn't turn people away from the console, especially new people. Even so, I just can't see the need for the name in the first place. Was it necessary? I think Nintendo had MORE than enough going for their new console to take the lead without a bizarre and questionable name.

So that's what I'm looking at. Nintendo was doing great things up until this: backwards compatibility, downloads for retro/new games, any USB device for storage, Red Steel being the premier game...and then, naming the console "The Wee".

Ever hear of the Chevy Nova debacle? Apparently, the car sold VERY poorly in Spanish-speaking countries. Had Chevy done some research, they would have learned that, in Spanish, "No va" directly translates into "doesn't go". Who's going to buy the car that "doesn't go"?

Like it or not, product names have a REAL consequence on their sales. I'm afraid that "wee" might do the same thing for the Nintendo that Nova did for Chevy.

I hear you loud and clear, and you cited two of my biggest concerns.

The answer is advertising, advertising and MORE advertising. Like I said, 1 of every 10 ads in the 2 months before the Wii's launch should be an ad for the Wii, period.

This is Nintendo's last chance to shine in the console market and they actually have something which will sell this time. If they don't provide the advertising necessary to get the word out, it'll be their own stinginess when it comes to the advertising budget which killed them.

I'm basically praying for this.

Iwata said something along the lines of having a good idea how to market the concept. I just hope he wasn't blowing smoke. Nintendo's ads have been sparse in the past, seemingly adopting the attitude of "People will buy it whether or not we advertise."

This time, they have something they NEED to advertise, and like I said, advertising will make ALL the difference between the Wii succeeding and people only finding out about the FHC concept after Sony and MS rip it off.

I think that's probably the bottom line, there.

Ideally, Nintendo should be advertising so much that people should know what "Wii" is before they go to the store.

Let's hope they didn't pick the name under the belief that it would allow them to skimp on advertising in favor of word of mouth.

I'm going to be pissed if EA DOES use the same bland ads.

There's online play and you actually throw the ball in game now (I wonder how you tackle...). There's almost no excuse for people to not play the game on Nintendo's console.
