That's the big kicker here, and then Ubi could license it to other companies for their Wii ports.

As a purely monetary investment, it would definitely pay off.

I've completed the first 3 chapters including the single player only side missions, and it looks like I'm only missing 3 guns(if all the spaces get filled), but I looked in the archives and it looks like I've done absolutely nothing so far. There are so many empty spaces!! Am I really expected to find all that stuff!!?

And one question, can you blast doors open with the shotgun? I've only found one so far(wasn't really looking) and I used a grenade to open it.

You don't find all the guns until you've gone through everything, really.

As for the files, a second player helps greatly: have one person loot and the other shoot zombies in the knees to slow them down without killing them.

And yes, you can blast doors open with any gun provided you fire enough rounds.

I didn't mean that 3rd parties are suffering, but there's a point where a dev needs to evaluate which console will make them the most money to develop for.

The more consoles Nintendo sells, obviously the higher the potential userbase, but the numbers aren't black and white when I know personally that I've delivered Wiis into homes which likely won't buy another game past Wii Sports for a long while.

But I think it's a self-correcting problem: more "hardcore" Wii games are showing up all the time, making the console more of a gamer's console. I agree that the universal appeal can only help, but right now, we do tend to see more "gamer" games no doing as well as they should be, like Mario Galaxy in Japan.

That's a one time deal, though. After you escape the guards, you're anonymous again and you can walk past the same guards without issue.

I mean a meter which would fill up some more every time you made yourself known and, if filled completely, would make it so every guard knows who you are on sight and your target goes into hiding so you'd need to leave the city and try again later when they had stopped looking for you.

It would basically make it so you had to pick your battles and try your hardest to stay out of the eye of the law.

Right now, I walk around stealth-killing guards for the pure hell of it. If the goal of the assassin is to get to their target and go unnoticed (which makes sense as skittish targets would hear about the deaths of guards, you'd think, as gossip travels fast), then you should be punished for random killing.

Ok, I've figured out what my primary gripe with this game is...

In any game, there are a set of rules which we, the players, are intended to abide by. Think of how, in any Mario game, we need to jump over pits to avoid death. If we fall off the platform, we lose a life. This is the norm and is something I don't think players are bothered by.

The primary issue with Assassin's Creed is that this expectation is not placed upon the player and the game loses a great deal of its difficulty and immersion value.

For example, every piece of advice, be it a hint during a loading screen or NPC interaction that the game gives you, is geared toward having you behave like a true assassin: running instead of fighting, hiding, using stealth, etc. However, the player is not at all punished for not doing any of this. You can run around killing as many guards as you want and as many innocent people as your "health" bar allows since you only lose 3 bits of health when you slay and innocent and these rapidly recharge anyway.

Even the achievements in the game focus mostly on lots of open combat: kill 25 guards in one fight, stay in battle for 10 minutes, let 100 people see you kill someone, etc. It's like the game had this awesome setup where you'd need to play by its rules and then the developers suddenly said, "You know what? F*ck it. Make the player a one man army, god of death where you can hold block and hit X for an instant kill and do so as many times as he/she wants with no fear or penalty."

I thought of what would have fixed this game perfectly: an awareness meter. When you go into a city, it's at zero. As you kill guards, civilians, cause disturbances, etc., the bar would charge up, and if you're running from guards, the bar would slowly fill until you've escaped them and vanished. If the bar fills up completely, your target will go into hiding and not come out, forcing you to leave the city for a while for it to "cool off" from your presence so you'll be able to walk the streets anonymously again, otherwise guards know you immediately and attack you on sight, and maybe an "elite" group of armored, invincible guards show up who you NEED to run from.

With that simple change, it would have forced players to REALLY behave like an assassin, not like now where you can just charge headlong into a group of guards and slaughter them with ease.

The game is still pretty fun, but I wish they had made it more immersive via something like the awareness bar to give it more realism.

Yeah, the "triggers" are a bit weird but other than that it's alright.

I think it's ironic that walking past guards is suspicious but hugging one of them from behind while clasping my hand over his mouth isn't.

I got the 25 guards in one fight and 10 minute fight achievements. The trick is to piss off a bunch of guards, kill them down to 3, then run off to find some more while keeping the fight "going".

Ubi stands to benefit a great deal from the porting of the UR3 engine, mostly for their own games but also because they could then license it out to other companies for additional profit.

Since they clearly intend to support the Wii a great deal, it would surprise me if this wasn't Ubi doing the porting.

Interesting thought...

What if there's a Wii F-Zero game in development which features a new character as its lead. Just like Ike's icon is the Falchion, so too might this new character be represented by the Falcon icon.

It would explain why we haven't heard much from the F-Zero franchise yet.

We've seen a character from all of the former franchises except F-Zero and G&W, I believe. G&W I could see being axed, but F-Zero is a far bigger franchise with a shot at sequels. In fact, I have more suspicion toward F-Zero's silence than anything right now.

Sony tried to make game discs "cohere" to the first console they were played on at one point, but that was shot down.

As for online shortening shelf life, I don't think it's an issue when people buy games specifically for online multiplayer.

I mean, how many of the 4 million copies of Halo 3 were bought with the intention of playing through the single player and then putting the game down forever? I'd guess a very, VERY small percentage.

In fact, Halo 3 proves that online multiplayer alone can push a game's sales much further than single player does. Nintendo seems to be sobering to the fact that a solid multiplayer can push a game a lot further, like Mario Strikers and BWII. I just hope they continue with the trend and make sure to add online play when and wherever they can.

I can't make one, but I'd like to do a poll where we list games and say, Kept it, sold it back, would have kept it with online play.

I realized why character reveals are the most important updates...

If there's one thing I've learned from studying previews of games to death, it's that one can never gauge anything about how a game actually plays without actually playing it him/herself. My best examples are SSBM and World of Warcraft. In both cases, I had gotten an idea in my head about how a game played and found that, in reality, the game was completely different from what I expected.

Updates which focus on gameplay, final smashes, moves, etc. all need to be tested in order to be understood. A final smash can look absolutely badass and yet be almost completely worthless in practice, but we won't know that until we play the game for ourselves, and probably won't REALLY know until we've had a good deal of game time under our belts (ie. everyone figures out a way to avoid a final smash and it's considered worthless from then on).

Character reveals, on the other hand, are definite. For example, King Dedede's reveal confirmed that he is in the game. We know nothing else, but we know that his likeness and character will be present in SSBB. How he plays, how his moves work in an actual gameplay context, etc. are still very much up in the air, but we KNOW that Dedede is in the game and you will be able to play as him.

That is THE most certain thing we can find out through updates. We only have snippets of music so we don't know if the whole song is good or not. Levels can look crazy but we won't know for certain because we don't have first-hand knowledge of how the physics of the game will relate to those levels.

The ONLY certainty in SSBB which we can know without playing it is the roster, period. Online could be laggy and unplayable, stickers could be boring, spectator mode could suck, the level editor could be clunky and buggy, but if they tell us Sonic is in the game, we KNOW FOR CERTAIN that he is in the damn game.

Anything else is speculation and invites disappointment. I was excited about the level editor but I was wrong in being so. Until I've felt how it plays, I'm just inviting disappointment.

Nintendo Gaming / Gamestop: the reason games need online multiplayer
« on: November 23, 2007, 07:49:08 AM »
Something I've been thinking about recently...

Gamestop functions on a system where people sell back games so Gamestop can then sell those games as used, generating 100% profit for Gamestop and completely cutting the publisher out of selling a new copy of the game. It's quite ingenious. It allows people to spend less money to get the games they want while simultaneously allowing Gamestop to sell the same copy of a game 3, 5, maybe even 10 times over.

There's one key lesson publishers need to understand in all this: if you don't give gamers a compelling reason to keep your game, then you're going to get screwed out of many, many potential sales, not just in terms of Gamestop, but in rentals, resales, borrowing, etc.

To date, the most compelling reason is a multiplayer mode, but even better is an ONLINE multiplayer mode. It's a simple equation: the more gamers keep your game for a longer period of time, the more gamers will buy new copies instead of finding used ones.

To the point, which will have a higher percentage of used copies show up at a local Gamestop, Metroid Prime 3 or Halo 3?

This is one of the reasons Nintendo's stubbornness in embracing online gaming irks me so much: first day sales are going to be weaker for games which most players know will show up used in less than a week if they're willing to be patient. Halo 3 didn't suffer this stigma because most players are buying it for the multiplayer and thus will keep the game for a while after purchase, unlike MP3 which players will complete and likely sell back for store credit toward Mario Galaxy, which they'll also sell back for store credit for SSBB which they'll probably hold onto for a while because it has online multiplayer.

We don't live in a market paradigm where getting a game sold is the end of the battle. Games are a volatile commodity, as the trade in credit for a particular game will go down after time, urging players to beat a game quickly and sell it back quickly. The trick is giving gamers a valid reason to not bring it back to Gamestop.

It'll be interesting to see how many copies of SSBB show up used a week later...

My hatred of friend codes is nothing compared to my hatred of the lack of voice chat.

Seriously, on XBL, you get the occasional assclown, but in the grand scheme of things, being able to simply tell your teammates where the flag is is so infinitely better than typing it out or not being able to tell them at all.

And if you're using friend codes, voice chat shouldn't be an issue because you added these people yourself. Plus, they've already shown us that they're willing to use it in MPH and PD&P.

I don't understand why they haven't introduced a headset that plugs into the connection port on the Wiimote and gives a passthrough port (like the lightguns do). They'd be able to sell another hojillion accessories and developers would finally be able to add voice chat to their games.

His point isn't that pack-ins are bad, it's that Wii Sports is a draw to the type of gamer who doesn't buy many games and he's semi-right.

True, but there should be more mechanisms in place to "encourage" you to play the game how it's meant to be played.

On another note, I didn't even realize that you do a silent stealth kill when you're not holding the Rt. You can walk up to someone, kill them and then walk away without anyone knowing until the person actually falls down.

I have nothing against Killer7, but REUC is probably the best "pointer skill" game on the Wii to date.

Just don't dislike the game because someone who likes it ragged on K7.

As for HOTD, I'll rent it, Ghost Squad, and any other lightgun games which show up, but I've learned buying them isn't always a good idea.
