Nintendo Gaming / RE:Epic Etch, my DS game idea
« on: September 30, 2004, 04:54:48 AM »
Well if you make it where you have to draw the items exactly how they are in the game, or as close as possible, then the drawing is still a gimmick, but just less creative because you can't design your own weapons.

I can actually see where you could argue it is more important to have a more controlled Gimmick.

Still though you could have tons of hidden drawn items that never show up throughout the game that would allow the random experiments to be important.

I like Color paper Paper/Rock/Scissors idea...and the best part about it is you can kinda keep it in threes throughout the game to make it less complicated but still make an advancing system.

You start the game only able to find white, black, red, green, blue, and tracing paper.

Then you find throughout the game PosterBoard papers and they come Dark Red, Dark Green, and Dark Blue, White and Black.

Later in the game you start finding paper that merge powers they are Yellow,Purple,Light Blue (Using the Additive Color spectrum to blend)

Eventually you will find Bronze, Silver, Gold paper which will be the highest color order of paper.

I like the idea.  You should have color play an important part of the game.

Here is a few color specific ideas.

1)Different colors of paper can only make specific things.  This is the easiest way to allow you to draw ANYTHING and allow it to be something.  It would know by the color paper you choose whether it would be food, weapon, magic, whatever.  However, you can also accomplish this by allowing paper made out of different textures.  The Texture or material the paper is made of allows you to create the item...this leads to second idea:

2)Color effects Items usefulness.  Imagine Gold Paper is great to make weapons out of because it is more powerful against all other colored shields and such...but Gold Shields and Armor are still capable of protecting you.  Gold is the rarest paper.  Now you go down from there.  Red may be powerful against Green but Blue is powerful against Red.

With this the idea is to create a weapon, shield and such with each color.  So that when you battle you must juggle the colors you are using within your team.

Last idea.  Once you create an item a power level or with food usefullness is assigned to randomly.  So you create a sword.  It may be a powerful 100 level sword, but it may also randomly get assigned level 25.  If you make a great sword you must take it to various ARTISTS which act like forgers of the items.  They can polish up the usefullness of any item you create.

This could be an awesome idea.  And of course you should be able to trade your items wireless with friends.

TalkBack / RE:Yamauchi Announces Advanced New Animation Studio
« on: September 29, 2004, 12:48:45 PM »
This is a great idea.

Nintendo getting into animation could allow Nintendo to get more money by entering another market.  Eventually they could cross markets and allow game characters into animated movies and design games created from animated features.  If they have a popular character it will create atleast some buzz and hype for the anime, and if they have a huge movie that becomes popular they naturally have an exclusive game that will bring people to their systems.

Starting with the Japanese Poetry is also very smart.  It helps Nintendo break from their kiddie mold and immediately releases a serious animation that isn't just for kids but is literally animated works of art.  This won't help for the cross over design, but it would help differentiate the two sections of the company and bring more creditability to the goal.

I am all for this move and I am very excited by the prospect of it.

I don't know if I would go that far.

It is a bit cleaner than other Nintendo Boxes.  I like the focus of White, Black and the picture of the system.

It just appears to be simple and elegant.

I really like the Japanese DS website.  The menu system is pretty trippy.  You just feel like you are floating in a white room.

Not much to add.

The box design is very basic Nintendo.  Simple elegant picture of the system.  Splash Art for bonus discs which are probably stickers so that when Nintendo changes the promotion it can be something different.

What is alittle sad is we don't know what is on the back of the box.  Which is usually launch games and teases for games coming out for the system...also in typical Nintendo fare.

Metroid being a demo I think confirms that Metroid: Hunters will not be a launch title.  I personally would love a bunch of levels that are basically single missions in which Samus is hunting down different criminals every level...but I doubt we will get something like that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:EA sports Ds launch and Winter titles
« on: September 23, 2004, 09:03:53 AM »
This is very very believable.

Look.  Its a very small list of games, and they are EA Sports biggest games.  They would all come from 4 different teams, and since EA is one of the largest 3rd party developers it is very doable for them.

Too bad they couldn't push SSX Twist out alittle faster, because that would of been a great game.

So we are looking at:

Madden NFL 2005
and
SIMS: The Urbz

As EAs big launch games.

I wonder if Goldeneye really is just a port of the Nintendo code if with Nintendo's help they can get that game primed and ready for launch...then we could have a 3rd EA game for launch.

What is exciting about this is that its a game we weren't completely expecting.

It proves that launch games are being readied, and more will be available then we ever imagined.

Could it be that we could have 20 or more games at launch?  Perhaps even more?  Perhaps the potential of >20?

At first we thought we would be lucky to get 10 games.  Now I am very hopeful of much more.

What do I think will be available?

Ultimate Mind Games
Spiderman 2
Madden Football
Sims: The Urbz
Puyo Pop
Wario Ware
Super Mario 64*4
Super Smash Bros. DS  (just a hunch)
Super Mario Kart  (available before Jan.)
Castlevania
PacMan game

and more...

Just a few things interesting to note.

Nov. 21 Release Date.  That means the Ship Date will probably be Nov. 18th.  So VERY VERY SIMILAR to games and systems prior.

PictoChat included.  This is big.  Right now in America Instant Messaging on cell phones is becoming pretty big.  You can send messages to people and not have to call them.

PictoChat could take that to the next level, and really help the popularity of this system.

As everyone is saying the price is perfect, because it will allow you for $200 to get a system and potentially 2 games.  Or just for alittle over $200 2 games.  Awesome.

Last, if Nintendo does ship with that Metroid Hunters bonus disc then it is even better.  Personally I think its going to be the entire game.  I think they never meant it to be a single player game, and they are just throwing it in as a gift for the DS buyers.  Hey here is a great multiplayer game for you.

This move is brilliant because it allows for DS to have a solid multiplayer experience right out of the box and its FREE!!!

GO BIG N!!!

So what is the announcer saying?

I like the commercial, but I really wish there was more too it.  Like if they gave us a hint by her looking at a game playing or something.

Right now its just a real cute commercial of a girl touching her first game system.  *LOL*

I personally would want the Secret of Mana 2 game that was never released in the US.

Or maybe a compliation of SOM 1 and 2.

Why?  It is perfect for multiplayer and since people would have their own screens action wouldn't have to stop for magic.

Touch Screen could have all magic and health information and could really speed up magic/item/equipment options as it can be performed touch screen even while battling.

That would be so cool if you have to decide during battle if it is worth selecting magic to do because enemies are too close to you and you may take a hit while working to select the magic.

I would love a dual Screen platform game where you control Mario and Luigi at the same time.

In fact only one aspect could be Platform (Mario up top) and Luigi could be engaged in a completely different style game where you must use the touch screen.  This would be cool, because very few games have really been designed where you must real time handle very different multiple objectives and gameplay types.

That would be innovative.

See I think IF Metroid: Hunters is primarily a multiplayer game with a simple or no single player experience Nintendo will HAVE to launch it with Metroid Prime 2.  The entire concept of Hunters is to allow people to play multiplayer Prime on the go.

Metroid is also a big name series now for Nintendo.  Its the game mature players hype that Nintendo has and the others don't.  I wouldn't be surprised if its not a launch game.  But then what will take its place?

Mario Kart is a possibility.  They already had the game running they can design new courses in this amount of time, and Mario Kart is a huge fan favorite.

I was going to list 3rd party possibilities too, but then decided to focus just on Nintendo.

3rd party launch definates would be:

Bomberman: (Hudson has a good relationship with Nintendo, and a Bomberman game isn't too hard to throw together since they can easily use code already used on other Nintendo systems.)
Madden Football:EA is already stated they are working on the game.  They are usually quite good at releasing games during launch.  At least one or two.  So this game is a sure thing.  Mid-Football season too.  We definately will need a portable game to play while watch the games with our friends.
Sims: The Urbz Ea is working on this game as their definate launch title.  Perhaps even more than Madden this game will be out for launch.

Other games who knows for sure.  One of those Ultimate Games should be out at launch easily.

I suspect that either at launch or by years end we should have atleast 5 Nintendo published games on the DS.  I think they will all be out during launch.  Nintendo needs be able to hype the system with a solid list of games fast.

So Bill what are your thoughts of launch titles for the system?

I think that the most obvious launch games would be:

New Mario (Super Mario 64*4 most likely)
Metroid: Hunters (Depends on if they are going to bring a single player game experience or just release it as a portable Metroid Prime 2 multiplayer game.)  I can see this launching alongside Prime 2 though easily, perhaps with some sort of connectivity?
Wario Ware  Easy game to program and design.  Most of the code probably just needs to be refined for the DS.  Provides several different kinds of gameplay into one.

Games that will most likely not be out for launch:

Animal Crossing DS:  too much translating to prepare it for both markets for launch.
Super Mario DS:  No two Mario games going to be out at the same time.

Bill you are amazing with the homework.  Being at work has made it hard to do anything but check in here randomly.

I will place my bets that the system will be launched within that Nov. 15-19 timespan.

I may have little to no sold proof, but if I was a gambling man it makes the most sense.

Now I wonder which game will be launched first the new "2D" Super Mario Bros game, or the Super Mario 64*4 game?  I don't think both will be launch games because it would be confusing.

My bet is the Mario 64.  It would be very easy to use the same worlds, or similar worlds to the 64 game and launch that with multiplayer.

Though I heard from Gamespot (I think) that the single player experience for this game was actually going to allow you to use any character and switch between the 4 to solve puzzles and such within the game.  That could be very very cool.  I don't know if I like it more than just getting a pure portable Mario 64, but it does sound intriguing.

I think the DS will be a great system for sports.

Imagine being able to design your own plays with the stylus touch screen...even to the point of designing the plays during the huddle!

If that is too ambitious you can atleast pick plays quickly and easily, and then have quick choices for audibles and such.  And the same customization can be placed into all sports games.  Formation changes on the fly, quickly call individual players in baseball to cover the field more conservatively or aggressively and so on and so on.

Nintendo doesn't need to make these games themselves.  Nintendo just needs to sell the concepts to EA.  If EA sees potential in the system the games will come.

What I really hope is that Nintendo spends some money like they are in Japan and creates DS hubs around America for meeting places to play games.

Ideal places would be:

1)McDonalds (They already have the N64s in store.)
2)Find a large coffee house chain, or bookstore chain that wouldn't mind having a seperated off section for this very idea.
3)College Dorms.  If Nintendo spent some money and created a HUD and HUD boosters within college Dorms then it would become an instant success for multiplayer gaming.

Blast that idea sorry guys.  It was worth a try.

I mean look at when they release games.

For the past years its big Christmas release has always been Nov. 18th.  They always have one game released in October.

I guess Nintendo doesn't do a pattern similar with consoles.

Though the November date is interesting.  Hmmm...how about just focusing on November for a bit.

What dates has Nintendo regularly used for releases in November?

There have been plenty of rumors going around about date of the DS launch.

I remember even hearing one stating it would be out around Nov. 3.  That is laughable.  So is I think the Nov. 30th.

If you really want to know around the time the new system will launch lets do some research.  One thing I have noticed about Nintendo is they are very repetitive.  They launch their holiday games always around the same date for years.  Lets do some research and see when Nintendo has released its new systems.  We can start by looking at the GBA, N64, Gamecube, GBASP.  I bet we can find a pattern and predict the launch within a week.

My personal bet it that the system will be released before thanksgiving.  My prediction would be around Nov. 18.  Why?  Because it screws me over because my birthday is on the 17th, and in Texas if the ship date is the 18th we don't get the game until the 20th or so.

Its an evil Joke Nintendo does to me, because they realize I am 100% loyal to them and they love to taunt me.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:halo ds?
« on: September 14, 2004, 10:38:25 AM »
Ok.

Halo is a good game...it always was, and always will be.  However, the game is overrated.

Halo became a fan favorite game because it brought a really great multiplayer FPS experience to the console system.  It was the first, and so far the best console multiplayer FPS.  It was also the first to bring multiplayer ambitious and strong level design of the best computer shooters.

Second, Halo brought a refined control to the genre that many believe is better than the control available on computer FPSers.

However, its overrated because the story, single player level design, and excitement was never as great as people believed it to be.  The single player experience of Goldeneye is a far better experience even though it is technically inferior in every way.

Now we have Halo 2 coming out and MS is genius to hype this game.  They also were genius to focus all its attention on what made the first game so great...multiplayer.  I am curious how the single player experience will be, but I doubt it is going to be nearly as great as the multiplayer experience.

What does this mean for DSers.  We don't need Halo on DS.

What we need is a well designed FPSer of our own.  It needs to be designed specificly for multiplayer experience, and bring something exciting to the series.

The answer I have is for the original Goldeneye to be ported to DS.  Why?  The single player game is already there so the designers could work on how to port an exciting multiplayer experience.  This is however very unlikely to come out.

So the second answer is to hope that Metroid Hunters is truly a brilliant multiplayer experience.  If it is then we will have our great multiplayer game for the DS, and we can forget about the need of a Halo for DS.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Super Smash Bros DS, Can it be real??

KDR_11k:  You bring up some great points.

What do you need two screens of gameplay to do that you can't do one?  I know people really don't like the idea of the map because you are thinking I want something more original...something truely special...but what is something truely special you can do with that second screen?

A map Idea is really just one single element to "How the map can be used."

Like my idea, the map would be default, but it would also allow you to get information on players (a bulletin could scroll across and you can read who is in first, and damage levels of players.)

You could click on the map and get a view of the enviroment or watch others fight.  Very cool.  This would also allow for larger levels with more interesting fighting enviroments.  Levels won't have to be floating islands if you design the levels to have pitfalls, hidden switchs and other traps.  The ability to look at a map an know what the enviroment contains and where everyone is helps you plan your attack.

Map specific attacks.  These aren't just for aiming projectiles, but can be used to teleport, hide yourself from the map, disable others maps, auto teleport other players somewhere, I am sure you can think of alot more.

I would say don't look at the second screen as a map, but think of it as a user HUD that allows you to access several types of information not able to be done in a Smash Brothers Game.

Ian Sane:  I think those events are very friendly for Japanese Press.  They could have special Press sections and Media passes.  As well we don't know what Nintendo is doing and supplying to press behind the scenes.

This also isn't marketing for America.  So NOA I am positive has something completely different planned for marketing.  I am sure we will see demo units in stores around October for the DS in America.  I don't know when in Oct but some time.

A Mall tour around November (specially after the system is launched) for the US would be awesome hype.  People could play several games and if they enjoy the system buy it.  Parents can watch their kids playing the game, and kids can beg their parents properly.
