TalkBack / RE:Iwata Outlines Ideas for DS's Wireless Functions
« on: October 08, 2004, 09:46:36 AM »
Ian Sane:

I don't know about the movie idea, but it does show that Nintendo is thinking out of the box.  It shows that Nintendo is trying to find the best location to give new data and such.  For Pokemon a Pokemon movie is perfect.  It ensures Nintendo makes money on the movie, and it gives you a centralize area for people to download a new character that everyone will know about.  Wierd, but cool.

The Demos.  I love this idea.  Yes, I know some would like to keep the demo...but give 3rd party hardware creators time.  They will develop a way for you to save the demo on your computer harddrive and upload it again.  Just wait.

The best idea about the demo is you can potentially try every game in the store before you buy a game and see if you like it.  No more buying a game you aren't sure about.  You played the demo and you were able to experience the game for free before you bought it.  This is a great idea.  I don't care if I lose the demo if I turn the unit off.  This demo thing means I won't have to buy another dud game again.

I wonder if Nintendo could supply large enough save memory for you to save up to 10 additional bonus tracks for games and such later on after you purchase a game.  That would rule.

You know.  I am tired of the negativism.  Ok.  Nintendo doesn't have a huge list of games launching...but this is GOOD for 3rd parties.  Very good.  Nintendo is letting them shine.

Second, this new Mario 64 is going to be much more different then you realize.  You don't even start the game as Mario, but YOSHI!!!  A Yoshi that can eat enemies and throw eggs, does his float jump and more.  How will the levels be changed to help this gameplay?  Will there be more enemies per level?  Probably.  Will there be new star locations and puzzles that require new techniques probably.  So is it really a port.  No.

What it is, is a new game within fimilar enviroments, with many tweaks.

So lets be more positive about this Mario game and remember even without these tweaks and not so minor changes we are still getting a portable version of the greatest platforming and Mario game ever created.

I also don't believe this is the only Nintendo published game releasing this year.  If in Japan Nintendo is publishing 5 games for Japan's launch later that year...sure Nintendo can release another game for us sometime in December.  Or at least that is what I am hoping...perhaps I am being too hopeful.

Last, those 10-12 launch titles are not finalized.  Many of the smaller publishers weren't mentioned.  And I would not be surprised if the number is greater than before.

What I am worried about is Nintendo already realizing the touchscreen needs gimmick devices like a thumb stylise to get the best control in its games.  If that was going to be needed Nintendo should have decided the original stylise with this in mind.  Still its not a big deal and we should be excited about this new console.

Ok.  We have good news and bad news.

I will start with the Good News.

The Nintendo DS is actually launching with a decent variety of games (from all publishers) that will appeal to a large variety of gamers, and a good many that will appeal to older gamers.  There is also no kiddie title at launch that will turn gamers away from the DS like Gamecube had with Luigi's Mansion, also great news.

Bad News:

We are only going to get 1 Nintendo Launch game...but wait this is a remake of the GREATEST GAME CREATED OF ALL TIME...but it is still just an enhanced port.  (How is that for Bi-polar.)

What is worse is that Nintendo will likely only release one more DS title this year after launch...or this is speculation from my part.

Now that I commented on that.  There is a bright light that needs to be mentioned.  Look at the Japanese Launch lineup, and the planned games from Nintendo.

Nintendo will be releasing some of their BIGGEST games next year for DS and we won't have to wait very long to get them.  Remember the long waits for the games we wanted to play for the GBA, Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo...yeah.  Those are gone this coming system.

We will be playing next year:
Super Mario Kart
Advanced Wars
Metroid Hunters
Wario Ware

And Nintendo is doing this and continuing to make new franchises.

This is a very exciting annoucement.  Dispite some bad news.

Well ok.  My names weren't that good.  But "Feel the Magic?"  That is just stupid.

I understand the idea of putting the word feel in the title, but Magic?  huh?

I like the XY:XX part of the name.  Its fun.  Feel the Magic part is stupid.  I fully expect a name change before release.

The original title is too ambigous to what kind of game it is.

I wouldn't mind a similar title like

XY:XX The Dating Challenge
XY:XX Gaming

It sounds really fun and odd actually.  Kinda of like dating sim meets Wario Ware.  I am excited, but I hope I can rent it or play it somewhere before I have to buy it.

Actually.  We are just speculating that the launch lineup will be revealed.  I don't think Nintendo has actually stated such.  This press conference is actually still quite a mystery.

I wonder how accurate the describtion of the game is.

I hope that the singular player game doesn't have to be played with all 4 characters.  I would love to have just a portable Super Mario 64.  Or atleast the option to play the original Mario 64.

I would also like that something new with the 4 characters, but I don't want that more than the original.

At least the idea of the 4-Player game is going to rock.

I can't wait for this game.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is the DS is being rushed?
« on: October 05, 2004, 08:09:22 AM »
I think the hardware hasn't been rushed.  Nintendo has seemed to have been working on this idea for a system for awhile.  What is interesting is to wonder...did Nintendo truly want to use this idea as a 3rd tier...or if they had the luxury of no PSP would Nintendo of held of for about year or so and then released it as the new Gameboy with better graphics then we are getting now?  Its an interesting question.

About the games, again I don't know if they are being rushed or not.  Nintendo has been working to get shorter and shorter development time for games and for the most part they are succeeding...but it also costs us gamers something.

Its a mixed bag.  They may be rushing, but its something I feel they would have done no matter what.  Launch titles seem to rushed usually, or atleast that is my opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS vs PSP....devs and journalists debate
« on: October 04, 2004, 07:54:54 AM »
I don't know why people think the DS can't do fighting games.  Its the best system to do some kind of fighting games.

DS could be the first system to do First Person Fighters right.  Top Screen can show where you are in the ring, and health.

Bottom screen you use your fingers to Box the other player.  And area to block can be in the lower corner you press with both fingers to block.  An area on the side of the screen can be press to do side steps.  Perfect Punch Out design, or other boxing games.

2D fighters could ROCK on this system.

Imagine A 2D game where you are fighting on the top screen  Bottom screen is for tag team special attacks and switching out.

A quick tap on your partners hand switchs the players out.  And more advanced touch screen movements could activate special partner special attacks.

Last, when you have an opening in the battle on top screen do an attack then send your partner in not to attack the top screen, but to attack on the bottom screen opponents partner.

So now you are juggling between two fights.  The top one being the main battle and the bottom being a side bout.

PSP couldn't do that.

« on: October 04, 2004, 07:26:05 AM »
The problem I see is.  With each built in software within the DS the price to make them is more expensive.  I would rather have more memory to store Linkplay games than another built in program to the DS.

Nintendogs isn't neccessarily a simple low memory product anyway.  It could be a very advanced game that deserves an entire cart to design.

The chat program alone will help appeal to women.  Nintendogs would be the perfect launch game for girls to buy.

Besides women.  Children will love the game.  (And I know that we as older gamers hate the idea, but Nintendo appealing to children is still smart.)

Little girls will love to play with dogs on the go and have virtual pets that act and behave like real pets.  Its literally the next evolution of the virtual pet.  You can interact with them physicall and actually play real games with the animals instead of just push buttons.

Ok.  Sorry Bill.  I just wanted to be understood that I was just implying how easy it would be to make the games.

So after some recent news we can add some to my list...that I will repost in here.

Games to Expect at Launch
Wario Ware (Should be a pretty easy game to port)
Super Mario 64*4 (We must launch with a Mario Game this will be it.)
Super Mario Kart (Should probably be in unlikely for launch, but I have my fingerscrossed)
Madden 2005 (Seems the most likely EA Sports game.)
Urbz: Sims in the City
Spiderman 2
Ultimate Brain Games (Very easy games to port)
Ultimate Card Games (very easy games to port)
Pac N Pix (Japanese Website already up.)
Mr. Diller DS (Japanese Website already up.
Castlevania (Konami has done very good at developing these games at a timely manner.  We know one is in production, and when the GBA released we had a new Castlevania.)
NINTENDOGS (Seems like a good game for Nintendo to use to try and collect female gamers, which they seem to be marketing for.)

Games Not to Expect at Launch
New 2D Mario Game
Super Smash Bros. DS
Metroid First Hunt
Sonic DS
Animal Forest DS (Could be done for launch, but highly doubt it. Pontential Dec or March release.)
Zelda DS (Not a chance, something special is being done with this.)

Question.  We know Capcom is working on some games, there was a list of what they were...I don't remember what games were listed...if you remember what game from that list do you expect to be the Capcom launch game, because I believe there will be one.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS Launch Titles
« on: October 01, 2004, 09:45:00 AM »
BILL:  What I meant was: designing those mini games to work with your DS, which most likely uses a very similar programming language as the GBA.  You can redesign most of those games and create new mini games to react to the touch screen fairly easy.

Just like Ultimate Games, those aren't going to be ports, but they are going to be old games that have been done on the GBA before.  It will be very easy to optimise code for the DS and release those games.

That is all I meant...sorry for the confusion.

Ian Sane:

I didn't make the list to be cool...or be everything I wanted.

I tried to make a realistic list.

To be truthful, I don't think that is all that will be available at launch.  I want help with the list.

What games do you think Nintendo will have ready?  All I can go by was what was shown at E3.  Most of those were demos.  So what few actual games were shown is all I know for sure.

Though here is a few things I would add:

Castlevania (Konami has been pretty good at turning out the 2D Vania games.  We already have like 3 for the GBA, and one of those was out at launch.)

Capcom Title:  We will see something from Capcom, I just don't know what.  Probably not a Megaman game, or Viewtiful as to what it would be I dunno.

I really like the Artist allows you to tune equipment.

Hmmm, the symbol idea for weapons, items, and such would allow you to have easier hidden items based on symbols.

KDR:  Yeah that is true.  And thus possibly why a game like this hasn't been attempted.  Many of the more interesting aspects of the game would be harder to make.

TalkBack / RE:Yamauchi Announces Advanced New Animation Studio

We as gamers are also looking at it from the perspective of gamers.

Why would Nintendo do this instead of games or instead of online.  Like it is an either or proposition.  It isn't.  Nintendo can do both.

We are also looking at it from the perspective of who would want to watch poetry.  Well we don't know what kind of poetry it is.

1)It could be poetry that tells of ancient battles from Japanese history or legends, that actually would be very cool around the world.

2)It could be more abstract poetry which would lend animators to be able to create something like Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.  Both of which appealed around the world and were very amazing works of ART.

See, Nintendo choosing to do more art animation first can give it instant crediability and make a name for themselves.  Hey they took a risk and challenged conventional wisdom of animation....COOL.

KDR:  That is why you allow different kinds of Paper Texture to determine what type of item you are creating.  So if you are freestyle creating a sword, you must use the Poster Board Paper, but if you are designing food you must use Crepe Paper, or such and such.  Then you also add the layer of colors on top of that.

That way if you want a sword that looks like a Hot Dog you can have one.  Or if you want a Gelatine Sword for an item you can have that.

That is what makes the game so much fun is that you can design anything for your weapon, and then you can trade those weapons with your friends.

I know this is hard to impliment...which is why I suggested the hidden weapons.

You don't have to attempt to get the hidden weapons to win the game.  Its for those that want to try and find the secrets.  Its a risk because you may waste your valuable paper, but then you may find an uber weapon in the process.

Actually Super Mario would make a great fantasy adventure OAV or cartoon series if it is handled correctly.

I would create the series where Mario and his Brother get sucked into the world of the mushroom kingdom.  They are now stuck in a world with completely different rules then in the real world.

They start searching trying to make since of the world when the come across the mushroom kingdom.  Its people speak a completely foreign tongue the the Italian brothers, but they definately seem suppressed.  Mario finds out why as they see an army of the mushroom men preparing for battle.

Blah blah blah.

The point of the anime would be to take the audience with Mario as he discovers this bizarre land, and tries to save the princess which he has fallen for.  Luigi is there for comic relief (not slapstick, but instead constant jabs at his brother.)

Legend of Zelda would be a harder OAV to create, but basically I would design the game around OoT.  Literally take the story of Ocarina of time and use it to create the anime story.  Young Link is sent on an impossible mission to get this pendants in this dungeons.  Along the way he meets all the people in the world and gets glimpes of how big his mission truly is.  Dungeon episodes would be about 2-3 episodes long...or if they are on an OAV then just one DVD or so and would actually walk Link around the dungeon and show him struggling with evil creatures, puzzles, learning the new item he gets, and eventually fighting the boss.

All of this is doable in a very cool way if they actually strive to keep it cool and not corny.  They would definately need to hire some great writing talent.

Well if you make it where you have to draw the items exactly how they are in the game, or as close as possible, then the drawing is still a gimmick, but just less creative because you can't design your own weapons.

I can actually see where you could argue it is more important to have a more controlled Gimmick.

Still though you could have tons of hidden drawn items that never show up throughout the game that would allow the random experiments to be important.

I like Color paper Paper/Rock/Scissors idea...and the best part about it is you can kinda keep it in threes throughout the game to make it less complicated but still make an advancing system.

You start the game only able to find white, black, red, green, blue, and tracing paper.

Then you find throughout the game PosterBoard papers and they come Dark Red, Dark Green, and Dark Blue, White and Black.

Later in the game you start finding paper that merge powers they are Yellow,Purple,Light Blue (Using the Additive Color spectrum to blend)

Eventually you will find Bronze, Silver, Gold paper which will be the highest color order of paper.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Epic Etch, my DS game idea
« on: September 29, 2004, 01:11:47 PM »
I like the idea.  You should have color play an important part of the game.

Here is a few color specific ideas.

1)Different colors of paper can only make specific things.  This is the easiest way to allow you to draw ANYTHING and allow it to be something.  It would know by the color paper you choose whether it would be food, weapon, magic, whatever.  However, you can also accomplish this by allowing paper made out of different textures.  The Texture or material the paper is made of allows you to create the item...this leads to second idea:

2)Color effects Items usefulness.  Imagine Gold Paper is great to make weapons out of because it is more powerful against all other colored shields and such...but Gold Shields and Armor are still capable of protecting you.  Gold is the rarest paper.  Now you go down from there.  Red may be powerful against Green but Blue is powerful against Red.

With this the idea is to create a weapon, shield and such with each color.  So that when you battle you must juggle the colors you are using within your team.

Last idea.  Once you create an item a power level or with food usefullness is assigned to randomly.  So you create a sword.  It may be a powerful 100 level sword, but it may also randomly get assigned level 25.  If you make a great sword you must take it to various ARTISTS which act like forgers of the items.  They can polish up the usefullness of any item you create.

This could be an awesome idea.  And of course you should be able to trade your items wireless with friends.

TalkBack / RE:Yamauchi Announces Advanced New Animation Studio
« on: September 29, 2004, 12:48:45 PM »
This is a great idea.

Nintendo getting into animation could allow Nintendo to get more money by entering another market.  Eventually they could cross markets and allow game characters into animated movies and design games created from animated features.  If they have a popular character it will create atleast some buzz and hype for the anime, and if they have a huge movie that becomes popular they naturally have an exclusive game that will bring people to their systems.

Starting with the Japanese Poetry is also very smart.  It helps Nintendo break from their kiddie mold and immediately releases a serious animation that isn't just for kids but is literally animated works of art.  This won't help for the cross over design, but it would help differentiate the two sections of the company and bring more creditability to the goal.

I am all for this move and I am very excited by the prospect of it.

I don't know if I would go that far.

It is a bit cleaner than other Nintendo Boxes.  I like the focus of White, Black and the picture of the system.

It just appears to be simple and elegant.

I really like the Japanese DS website.  The menu system is pretty trippy.  You just feel like you are floating in a white room.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Shows Off DS Box Art
« on: September 29, 2004, 04:59:18 AM »
Not much to add.

The box design is very basic Nintendo.  Simple elegant picture of the system.  Splash Art for bonus discs which are probably stickers so that when Nintendo changes the promotion it can be something different.

What is alittle sad is we don't know what is on the back of the box.  Which is usually launch games and teases for games coming out for the system...also in typical Nintendo fare.

Metroid being a demo I think confirms that Metroid: Hunters will not be a launch title.  I personally would love a bunch of levels that are basically single missions in which Samus is hunting down different criminals every level...but I doubt we will get something like that.
