TalkBack / RE: Sony's PSP Strikes in March
« on: February 03, 2005, 03:15:34 PM »
All I have to say is, the PSP "launch games" (which are actually coming out sometime in the unspecified "launch window") is way more impressive than the DS's entire US lineup as of now. Apart from Mario 64 there's nothing worth owning. I don't even see that as a reason to pick up DS now... I'll wait for some new games, like Mario Kart or Metroid.

Wipeout Pure and Twisted Metal sure are going to be fun multiplayer games, and Ridge Racers and NFS Underground on PSP are better than their DS counterparts...
Speaking of which, notice all these games are racing games haha...

That said Mario Kart, Wipeout Pure, and Twisted Metal should all be great fun, as long as their online. Which only looks likely for Mario Kart though...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Star Fox Assault
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:39:46 PM »
I loved Starfox 64. I thought it was awesome.
But playing Assault now is way, way, waaay less impressive now than playing Star Fox 64 was back in 1996 (or was it 97) on the N64.
Basically if you're a Star Fox fan then yes, this game is definately worth getting, but it could've been much better, especially for a freaking 2005 game.

PS you should know I'm an extremely critical and tough person when it comes to games, heck I thought Wind Waker, Half-life 2, and even No One Lives Forever 2 were disappointing and not as good as they should have been, although I acknowledge they were among the best of 2003, 2004, and 2002 respectively... But yeah you probably shouldn't listen to me too much... I'm sure you'll have a great time with this game. Although, yeah, it could have been way better.

The funny thing is, I've never met anyone in person who though the Gamecube was for little kids or whatever. If I had never been on the internet before and someone told me the GCN was a system for little kids I seriously would be very confused.

In my school, no one really mentions or talks about the PS2. It's sort of just there..most people have one, no one talks about it. The Xbox definately is more talked about, mainly because of Halo 2 on Xbox Live. But everyone I've talked to about games (and this is especially true of people who own Xbox's as opposed to PS2's) have a lot of respect for the GCN and its exclusive games. Like this one kid who is an Xbox freak, all he talks about is Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden and whatever, one day we actually started talking and I was really surprised when he started talking about how he wished he had a GCN for games like Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4 and the new Zelda game. After knowing this kid for 3 years I wouldn't have even though he'd have any idea what Viewtiful Joe was. And when I criticized Halo 2's story mode and how it seemed rushed and unfinished he completely agreed with me, which was really unexpected given how he constantly gushes about the game.

Maybe people are just more mature where I live or something....

So yeah, Blockbuster has this game.

So um yeah, it's not that great at all. The music actually turned out to be nice, and some of the flying parts are really fun, but the ground combat is just not good and overall, it's pretty average.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Animal Crossing DS...
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:17:02 PM »
I want SNES games. But of course Nintendo won't do that because they can spend about 2 hours porting an SNES game to GBA and selling it for full price.

If Nintendo can get over their unwillingness to put SNES games in Animal Crossing DS because there's still a market for them on GBA then online play coupled with voice chat and a big library of unlockable classic games would make ACDS a huge killer app.

If someone like Namco can turn Star Fox into average junk, then THQ... lol But it's only for DS and only for certain properties. So whatever. I don't care as long as it's not Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, or something.

The original Sidewinder was my first PC pad but after several years it just stopped working one day. Like, it's in perfect condition and the light still lights up and Windows detects it but it just doesn't work. Pressing buttons would get no response... It's like it's in a coma. But that was several years ago... Now after resting for several years and on my current computer and XP it might work again... Whatever. Sidewinder's dpad sucks. More like a circular blob thing.

TalkBack / RE: AIAS Award Winners
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:05:18 PM »
The thing is...
The AIAS are voted on by press, but mostly by developers themselves. And by that I mean American developers. Most of whom are not qualified to vote in awards such as these because they don't have enough experience with all games.

You'd think an awards show voted on by developers would be legit... but nope. Most (i said most) of these developers don't know anything beyond their narrow range of American games for whatever platform they happen to develop for.

Just looking at what games get nominated and the fact that games are often nominated for the wrong genre tells you the AIAS is simply a bad awards show. I mean, Pikmin 2 for best action/adventure? o_O It could be understandable if there weren't enough console RTS's but in 2004 there were more than enough console strategy games to warrant their own category.

er no, Zelda 2005 is for GCN, I promise you. That doesn't mean you won't be able to play it on Revolution...
Oh and I can pretty much garauntee you now that Revolution will not launch with a real Zelda. It's just not going to happen, and if it does it will be disappointing... And just to get it out of the way, Mario 128 is still supposedly "definately" for GCN, straight from Nintendo... Dunno why though. I'd put it on revolution...

hard drive? uh... Metroid Prime just streamed data perfectly. No load times. Then you have Half Life 2 which has load times every 20 feet... Even Far Cry at least never had any inside the levels, and each level was way bigger than a HL2 level...
Anyway, plenty of console games use efficient hidden streaming now after Metroid Prime's release (Soul Reaver had it before, but not as good)...

Oh, and I wouldn't mind some blood in the next Zelda. The N64 ones had some (not much), and even Wind Waker had this thing sorta like blood, everyone but me probably missed it though... it was this purple liquid spurting from one of the enemies in the game... very subtle... But anyway I'd like if this game looked more real than fake... It would be so awesome if instead of just trading shots with stalfos until you killed it, they had a deep parry system where most hits result in sword parries, making an actual hit much more rare and more damaging. Imagine stalfos falling apart as you chopped them apart and stuff.. And not the fake falling in apart in WW where it would was scripted... And actual blood from living enemies would make it more realistic, which is what we're going for right? Chopping up enemies would be nice too, especially things like the spiders and plants... Not Mortal Kombat inspired Warrior Within of course, but enough to be real looking...

PS i'm still not sure this will be as good as Ocarina though... I'll be extremely surprised... And they've only had from WW's release till now.. 2.5 or so years ain't much. Especially compared to ocarina... I really hope it's not too cookie cutter. Hoping for the best though...

oh ahahaha lol man you guys are really uptight and defensive... I never mentioned anything about the gameplay or that it would be bad. I said I didn't like the art and the graphics aren't advanced. You guys seem to have done a great job twisting that into "omg this game looks bad it's going to suck!!!11!Lkjs;df"
Anyway I have never said if this will be good or bad... Although I'm totally unimpressed with what I've seen with the ground combat. And since I'm likely going to be criticized in the future for saying anything negative about your precious Nintendo games, I'm just going to say that I'm a very touch critic and I'm not going to excuse faults for any reason, especially if something "is supposed to be like that for whatever reason" even though obviously hinders the game. Good thing Capcom changed the camera in RE4 huh?
Anyway quit implying I'm not a real gamer or stuff like that... Anyway like I said I'm tough but I'm fair and I understand things (gasp) even if you don't bother to write it out explicitly saying otherwise. I'm complaining about the graphics. Do I really have to write out that I understand this does not imply I doubt the gameplay quality? o_O It's like my reader reviews on Gamespot (Gamefreak72) ... I don't write much explaining everyt little thing since that would take pages,  but I give a LOT of thought to the scores I assign, I even have huge spreadsheets with score charts across all games I've ever completed, with fair scores given in the time period of its release... Speaking of which, perhaps I should upload some more to gamespot... good way to waste time

Nintendo Gaming / RE: N64 -> DS
« on: February 01, 2005, 11:44:21 AM »
nope, both screens can use 3D at the same time...This silly rumors get way outta hand.. There's already a game out that has both screens running full 3D at once...it was a launch title lol... Anyway why would Nintendo say stuff like "see a character two screens tall" and stuff? I'm sure they weren't talking abou FMV like in Hunters.
Anyway yeah both screens can definately do 3D at once, and you can do it in 30 fps too, unlike where if only on one screen the DS forces 60 fps... About the alternating thing, I wouldn't take rookie's word for it.. like I said a launch title had full 3D in both screens and it looked perfect to me

I don't see that much to redo for Ikaruga... tone down the graphics a little, lower texture sizes, and tone down the explosions. The should handle the rest of the effects.... And Ikaruga doesn't really push the polys too much... If Soul Calibur can be ported with Namco saying it has surpassed the original in graphics quality, I highly doubt Ikaruga can't be done... However Treasure did only have 5 people working on that game I think... I doubt they have a port team

Yeah Terra's easy, it took me about 10 seconds to figure out the notes on xylophone but hey it rocks. Have you heard the version from that concert? It was rearranged by Uemetsu and features a full orchestra and a japanese vocalist (with japanese lyrics). At first I thought the singing was wierd but it's a good accompaniment part to the melody (played by a japanese flute in the first have and then the strings in the end, where the flute takes over the vocalist's part). Anyway the string parts are really cool and there's a great orchestral bass drum part that always hits with two eighth notes, sounding like a heart beat (like in the Metroid Prime 2 menu theme). Anyway the singer could be softer and the orchestra louder and I'd prefer just oohs and ahhs instead of lyrics but whatever.

And there are two great Terra remixes on OCremix.com... One is called Terra in Black, it's basically a guitar anthem with two electric guitars being played by someone who apparently really loves this song (you can tell from the way it's played even) with some cool string hits in the back, and begins and ends with some funky synth vibes. And there's one called Death on the Snowfield which is actually a remix of the aforementioned orchestral concert rearrangement, except very subtle and minimalist, feature only an acoustic guitar, flute (or some sort of high woodwind instrument, wind instruments aren't really my specialty), bass drum, and snare...

Anyway I still think the original Terra's theme is the single best FF theme.. not just as a composition...but just playing that game.. That was easily the best FF rpg and the theme was just so beatiful... I would literally just keep resetting the SNES to hear it again... And everyone I know who played that game apparently did the same haha... Man that song just topped off an amazing game... PS kefka owns sephiroth, the sissy, and all the cliched FF7 characters

General Gaming / RE: PC game pads that don't suck?

Yup...
Okay I made a PC game thread a few months ago but whatever. Here are my top 2 recommended PC dual analog gamepads (both have PS2 layouts):

Logitech Rumblepad 2 - $30 MSRP ($40 for wireless, could find for less) - This has good rumble, and pretty much the exact layout of a PS2 controller. It's comfortable, has good build quality. The only slight gripe I have is the analog sticks are slightly too loose compared to an Xbox/GCN controller, but it still works well (Prince of Persia 2 controls very well). The Dpad is good, which is my main concern with PC gamepads apart from build quality. Not SNES/N64 good... The dpad is basically just like the one from the Xbox S controller. The corded one is black and blue and the wireless one is black. Both have rumble. I suggest the wired one since you shouldn't be going to far from your comp, especially if you have front USB ports. I have a corded one myself. Works great for emulators (especially SNES) as well as console ports like POP2 and sports games. Wired Wireless PS on the pictures the dpad looks abnormally high up on the gamepad but it's not really like that... Oh and battery life for wireless is claimed to be 100 hours, apparently with rumble o_O oh and the Gamespot review

Thrustmaster 2-1 Dual Trigger Gamepad - $20 (great deal) - This is a great gamepad. I'm planning on getting one for my second gamepad for some 2 player emulator action. But here's the best part. This hooks up to either a USB port on your PC or your PS2's controller port. You are getting a PC and PS2 gamepad in one! Not only that, in addition to the normal PS2 buttons there are two analog triggers (just like the Dreamcast or Xbox ones) that you can use on your PC. I wasn't sure how much they were, I figured 30 bucks, but I see that CompUSA is selling them for an amazing 20 dollars. It's a well built gamepad, and looks good (blue, black, and silver). I haven't played a game with it but Gamespot's review says the analog sticks are great. The Dpad looks well designed from the pics. Also, the analog sticks have a circular well they are in like the PS2 gamepads (where the GCN has an octogon and and the Logitech above has a square, because windows calibrates gamepads to a square range). Gamespot review Oh and it has two vibration motors of course.

If you want a console controller, there is a perfect adaptor for the N64 called the Adaptoid. It even supports rumble pak in windows and can even upload saves from your memory card to your PC. It rocks. Or... It rocked. They aren't being made any more... If you are lucky you could find an online retailer with some left or look on ebay...

There are numerous other adaptors for PSX, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, etc. just look online game retailers and import sites like lik-sang. There's this good gamecube one that comes with some good software and supports rumble and dual analog and even the analog triggers and the click and everything, but it doesn't support wavebirds. Hope that helps... and if it means anything, like I said I personally have the logitech and will get the thrustmaster. Also, Thrustmaster has some PC-only gamepads that are pretty good (my friend has one) but I prefer those two I listed. Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT get the version of the logitech that has no rumble, it looks the same but 10 bucks less and without rumble, but it sucks. And the dpad is totally different (it's an older model, the two I listed both came out within the last year). Also, go to stores such as BestBuy and CompUSA to buy any PC gamepads, because they have demo gamepads out on the shelves that you can feel and mess around with. If you consider buying a PC one the Thrustmaster at CompUSA looks great, 20 bucks, good gamepad, PC and PS2, and has analog triggers. Only wired though.

Oh and I'm using XP too... The logitech comes with a CD installer, it installs logitechs calibrator and their program that you can use for all logitech products. You can also remap things and reprogram buttons and stuff for each game installed on your computer. For example, you can program it so that in just Grand Theft Auto 3, pressing button 3 actually results in pressing button 1 continuously, or whatever. Not sure if the Thrustmaster has a CD. Probably...

Hope that helps.

I could care less about the DS's features, other than online play. I just want to have a good game to play anywhere, and online if there's multiplayer.
Of course, sequels to N64 games (like Mario Kart DS) instead of ports of N64 games (like Mario 64) are always the best route. But some games like Perfect Dark, there's no more hope for a direct sequel on DS so a port is the best.
And if Treasure didn't have like 10 employees they could get an Ikaruga on the DS. That would really be a killer app, especially with the two vertically stacked screens and co-op (with online!) play. The only two games I play on my calculator is Tetris (also would be awesome on DS with the two screens) and Phoenix, which is just a really really simple space shooter like Ikaruga.

at least the Revolution will plug straight into a computer monitor
And hopefully the Game Boy Evolution, or Extreme, or whatever will come with cables to hook it straight into a TV or monitor... or better yet, the GBE and Revolution could just be able to connect out of the box, meaning you could run your GBE on a TV/monitor through the Revolution, meaning if you have both you don't need to buy a freaking 50 dollar accessory just to play with a revolution controller or on a TV...
Of course the best deal would be if the Revolution just played GBE games directly...one less system to buy

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Star Fox Assault

I don't like the art style. I'm totally not liking the whole "anime makeover" .... The ships in SFA/Smash Bros.  looked much cooler... Say what you will about SFA, but the graphics and art direction far eclipse this new game... Not to mention it was consistent with Star Fox's look from SF64 and Smash Bros. Melee... The new game's art and ships look way too pointy and anime and ripped out of some cliche Japanese show about robots flying around blowing each other up...
Also, Fox and co looked way better in SFA...
And finally, the graphics, on a technical level, were so much better in SFA it's not even funny.. The on ground missions look horrible for a GCN game so late in the game and for a game so long in development... Even the character models are bad... While they have fur shading (not quite as good as SFA's from what I've seen) in the briefing screens they don't have them in game, where the polycounts are also much lower. Anyway, so yeah I don't like the look of the game at all..

As for the game itself, hopefully it will turn out to be good, but I'm not banking on much better than that... So far it just seems like a more arcadey/worse looking version of Rebel Strike..
