General Gaming / What was missing from the prE-ThWii Conference...
« on: May 09, 2006, 09:11:57 AM »
Now, this is all my opinion, so don't get up in arms against me, but there's so many threads about what's great (and it was great), but there are some things that I wasn't too thrilled with..

First off, the GameCube and GBA *barely* got any mention.  In fact, I don't think the GBA was mentioned at all.

Second - two versions of Zelda?  At least, we can probably assume the Deluxe edition will contain both.  And finally our chance to get a game that people in Japan want.  But seriously, ouch.  this hurts my wallet.

Speaking of Wallet - Third.  I want a Wii... but I'm not sold on it yet.  I need the price.  Now I wasn't really expecting to see the price today, but I wanted it.  I need to know how much to save up.  Guess I can just save up $600 and if all else fails, buy a PS3. heh.

Fourth.  Smash Bros.  Yeah, I went there.

Fifth - hardly any mention of the online aspects.  Sure, it's "on all the time".  Yay.  Couldn't care much either way (until something really neat is shown with that)  Networking code in the console?  IN theory, this would make online game programming as easy as programming a second player on the NES, right?  Expand on that a little more, if you would.  Most importnatly, barely a mention on the Virtual Console.  Details pls.

Sixth.  Nintendo, you told me that I'd understand the Wii name after the E3 conference.  I'm still waiting.

Finally... ummm... wasn't there a "big" hardware secret supposed to be revealed today?  Speaker? neat.  not big.  Always on?  You've still got to convince me of that.
Did you decide not to show it for fear of Sony stealing it?  That's fine, I'm a reasonable man... just tell me that.

Oh Nintendo, you do tease.  I want a Wii, so badly, and you taunt me with such glory, but rarely put out.

Aside from that, Mario vs. DK 2.  Kick ass.

General Gaming / Amazing Deals!
« on: May 07, 2006, 06:53:12 AM »
I don't know how much of a use this would be to anyone, but I just discovered a site that sells some pretty useful (IMHO) parts for a pretty good price (and shipping doesn't suck your soul out either).

electricquarter.com has a small selection of various parts. Of particular interest to me was:

Super Nintendo Controller Extension Cable - $1.75
Nintendo 64 Controller Extension Cable - $1.25
Nintendo Gamecube Controller Extension Cable - $1.75

Of course, your interest my vary, but they have Dreamcast Extension Cables, PS2-GCN adapters, etc... Might be worth checking out.

I know some people were excited over the GameCube cables when EBGames.com had 'em cheap... I think $1.75 is a bit less than EBGames.com had 'em for even (though I may be wrong). Hope this helps someone out.

Now if only they had NES extension cables.

Nintendo Gaming / The Price...
« on: May 04, 2006, 02:55:48 AM »
I keep reading on many forums that the Wii "will be $199 or less".

However, Nintendo never said any such thing.  The closest they came was saying it'd be "under $300" - which could easily mean "$299.99".

So, if the Will launches at any price above $200, do you think this will have a huge negative impact on the initial sales?

General Chat / PGC E3 Chat?
« on: May 03, 2006, 06:38:51 AM »
Howdy everybody!

In case you didn't notice, E³ is coming up pretty soon.

Now, a lot of us like to hang out in the IRC chatroom #PlanetChat.  And a lot of us like to use MSN's chat feature.  And some of us do both or neither...

What I'm wondering is this; Should we have an organized "place" to chat, designated to Nintendo's big conference on the 9th?  One room that we can all go into to collectivly poop ourselves as all the goodness is announced?

Suggestions?

Nintendo Gaming / Speaking of Cables...
« on: May 01, 2006, 08:34:38 PM »
Nintendo is kinda ticking me off here.

For those who don't own a Micro and don't know, the Game Boy Micro requires a different kind of link cable.  This means:

Standard Link Cables already purchased will not connect to the Micro.
GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cables will not connect to the Micro.
The Regular GBA Wireless Adapter will not connect to the Micro.

Don't worry though, Nintendo to the rescue!  Two of these three can be solved by purchasing stuff directly from the Nintendo store.  The on-line Nintendo Store offers the Micro Wireless Adapter for $20 and a new Micro-Micro Link Cable for $10.  If you want some kind of official GameCube/Game Boy Micro Link Cable, you're just SOL.  Which doesn't make a lick of sense, since there are more (and better) uses for the GCN/GBA Cable than the Wireless Adapter, why make the Wireless Adapter and not the more useful cable?  Anywhoo...

But wait, it gets better.  Since the $10 Link Cable is a Micro to Micro Link Cable, if you want to link to a Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP, you have to buy *another* cable.  This $8 plugs into the Micro Link Cable and into the GBA or GBASP.  Now, it would have made more sense if it plugged into the Game Boy Micro and into a regular GBA Link Cable (Thus allowing you to use any link cables you've already got, like the GCN Link or what not).

Anywhoo, so you buy this $10 Cable that plugs into your Micro.  Then, you buy an $8 adapter that plugs into the end of that cable that you would then plug into your GBA or GBASP.  But get this... the adapter is physically shaped in such a way that you cannot fit the plug into the junction box of a regular GBA Link Cable.  This means that, in order to play a four player GBA game with one of the systems being a Micro, you'll have to buy three Micro-to-Micro Link Cables ($30) and three Micro-to-GBA Adapters ($24).

Oh, and because this adapter is *PHYSICALLY* shaped in such a strange way, you cannot plug it into the GameBoy Player.  It does, thankfully, fit into the e-Reader's link port.

Now, when I say the adapter is physically shaped, I mean, it's purely physical.  In fact, I could probably cut the plastic tab off and it would work just fine...  But why should I have to inflict physical damage to this brand new $8 adapter I just purchased just to get it to work right?

Stupid hardware...

I've tried farily hard to avoid potty jokes made at the new name for the Revolution...  But when the name is pronounced "Wee", it's difficult and a few have slipped through.

"Is that a Weemote in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

Well, aside from those, something finally clicked in my head just now...

There's a series of billboards around here... I'm not quite sure what the purpose of these signs are, except for some kind of patriotism thing.

Basically, the left hand side looks something like a multiple choice test, giving four options with black, empty ovals to the left.  The fourth choice is always "All of the Above" and filled in with red.

An example of this is one that read:

Pro-Life
Pro-Choice
Pro-Wrestling
All of the Above

Then, the right hand side always says "Only in America".

Well, I saw one today that caught my eye...

Wright Brothers
Doobie Brothers
Mario Brothers
All of the Above

Heya everyone!

If you want one, get in now!  Troz has the first batch of 18 cables finished (well, it was 20, but I got the first two!).  The cables are $17.50 each (shipping is included in that cost) - and they're well worth the price if you want to link your GBA to your GCN.

If you're interested in purchasing a cable, check out the original thread on CAG - Troz is taking orders for this first batch via CAG's PM system.  If you're not a member of CAG... well, you should be.  Great place that ends up making me spend tons more money that it helps me save...

Anywhoo, if you're not a member of CAG, then you can PM me with your interest and I'll PM you back with Troz's e-mail address.

Please note that I'm not personally selling these cables - merely linking to the offer (much as I would if I found a good deal on EBGames.com or something).  So, basically, neither I nor PlanetGameCube.com are to be held responsible if something goes awry - although I can't imangine what that would be.

Original message below:

Well, as anyone with a Game Boy micro probably knows, there is no official (or even unofficial that I've been able to find) GameCube-Game Boy micro Link Cable.  Period.

Except...  for this one.

Now this has been tested and, from what I hear, works great!  The only bad part is that I don't have one (and I'm far too untalented to make one myself).

Anywhoo, the great individual who made the initial batch and I have been in talks, mostly me trying to get him to make some more (and, apparently, there's been quite a few others who have expressed interest in getting one).  The bottle neck, however, is getting ahold of the official Game Boy micro Link Cables.  Nintendo will only allow any one address to order five at a time...  (to prevent dealers/resellers).

Anywhoo, beyond that, we're looking at a couple of different options to get him the materials to make some more of these... But I wanted to ask, is there any interest *at all* from anyone here for one of these?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo = Purple?
« on: April 25, 2006, 06:47:02 AM »
Crap, Nintendo is the kiddie.

In the coming month, Wal*Marts across the country will be completly remodeling their Electronics Department.  One of the major focuses is going to be on video games.  This includes a *much* larger section of "Open To Sell" (i.e.: Not locked in cases) of $20 and under games, all HD TVs for the display units, more footage of locked game cases, etc.

But here's the bad thing.

Currently, Wal*Marts are supposed to be set up where the cases are Sony - Nintendo - Microsoft.  Always lead into the gaming with Sony, then Nintendo, then MS.  This is changing, Nintendo and Microsoft are swapping places... they're going to be in last.

But, aside from that, the cases are going to be color coded.  Sony/PlayStation gets Blue.  Microsoft/XBox gets Green.

Nintendo gets...

...

...purple.

What?

Well, I was out scavaging the used stores today to see what I could find... After not finding much of anything (An SNES Mouse/Pad for $5, a stand that I'll be posting about in the general section for $6 and an NES RF modulator for $.50), I came across...

A second hand GameBoy Micro.  Black, with the three Faceplates and charger... $50.  In almost perfect condition.

I had to have it.

I'm such a whore.

Nintendo Gaming / Who's up for some hardware hacking?
« on: April 11, 2006, 07:24:40 PM »
My Wal*Mart (check yours!) has these for $2.50:
http://www.toysrus.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&catalogId=10054&langId=-1&productId=66773

The ones that my Wal*Mart has are in a different package, but it's the same product.

But here's the interesting thing (and why it's posted on this particular forum!)...

The plug that you use to connect the second controller into the main unit is a frickin' GameCube Controller plug/port.

Now, aside from wandering how legal this is (Seriously, I'd like to know!), I couldn't wait to get this setup home and see if it did anything.
Well, the plug fits perfectly into the GameCube Controller port (which I figured it would).  Sadly, I cannot get any response from any of the buttons on the controller.  Plugging a GCN Controller into the main Coleco Controller also has no response.  HOWEVER, what makes this interesting is that the generic GCN Controller extension cable that I've got will work as an extension cable for the Coleco system...  Weird, eh?

Anywhoo, it seems to me that there has to be some kind of useful hack for something like this...

NWR Feedback / Behold my awesome e3 idea!
« on: April 11, 2006, 06:16:15 AM »
Well, from reading the various posts on this board, it appears that just about everyone here except me will be physically attending e3 this year.

God, it sucks to be me.

On another note, here's my idea.  PGC should ship out hats (or something of the like) that e3-goers could wear during e3.  This would negate the need for arraging a "meet-up" time (which some have declined due to the fact it would waste precious e3 time) and allow PGC'ers the chance to actually know when they're passing someone from PGC because of the Hat ("Hey, you're from PGC!").

Also, it'd be neat if Jonny did some kind of contest like "If I see you at e3 wearing a PGC hat, I'll buy you a Pepsi (or a Coke, or a Sierra Mist, or Dinner, etc...)".  It'd be more of a reason to wear a PGC hat.

As for PGC, how great would it be if multiple developers/companies representing at e3 kept being questioned by completly different people all wearing the same hat advertising the same website?

Just a thought.
