General Chat / Do buy cheap-ass projectors at Target
« on: April 26, 2011, 03:01:17 AM »
So, I was in Target today and what do I see?  A projector marked from ~$180 to ~$90.  Figured, what the heck, I'll give it a go (after checking their return policy).  Brought it to my in-laws where my brother-in-law and I went to try it out.  He noticed it was a Texas Instruments DLP projector (I didn't even look at the brand, how lame am I?).  We fired it up (using composite connection, the only other choice was VGA, but we plugged his PS3 in and started TRON Legacy on Blu-Ray).  It's frickin' awesome. Now, I know it's not 1080p Full HD 120 hertz, etc., etc... but it's got pretty awesome picture (even more so considering the first thing I did when I got home was hook it up to my NES and play the original Super Mario Bros.).

Sadly, my house isn't very big (not "wide" enough to get a good distance on any walls).  This thing claims it can give you up to a 100" picture.  Perhaps when it dries up outside, I'll be going to the Walmart parking lot and firing this baby up.

yay!

One of my pet peeves since I've been on the internet is that, except when a text input is highlighted, pressing the backspace key forces the browser to go back a page.  It's so stupid.

So, I was reading a post on the Nintendo tech forums where someone was complaining about it and I wondered if there was some way to disable it...

Sure enough - there is!  In FireFox at least...

Today, the internet just got a little better.

Nintendo Gaming / Street Pass!
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:39:33 PM »
So, I went around the nearest "big city" today.  Special trip mostly to kill the day, but partially to carry my 3DS around and try to Street Pass someone.

My trip included three GameStops (one in a mall), a Toys R Us, a Target, a Best Buy, two smaller video game stores, a small music store that sells a smaller selection of games, two Mexican grocers, a Walmart, and a Border's that's going out of business.

All of that, I managed to Street Pass one person.  It was at the Best Buy.  Guy's Mii introduced himself, said it was nice to meet me, then said he hated me.  :(

Well, just the pedometer.

It doesn't seem to matter which direction I go in, it always shows me being more steps away from young, small, delicious children.  They really should put a compass on this thing.  They'll probably sell that later as a downloadable app.  Anyone have any tips?

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS Mii Maker
« on: March 27, 2011, 12:48:10 PM »
Dumb question - has anyone figured out how to change their "personal" Mii?  Of course, the software forced me to create one when I loaded it, so I kept everything at the default settings.  Then, imported a Mii from my Wii... But now it won't let me delete Default or set my Mii as my personal Mii.  Any suggestions?

NWR Forums Discord / The Ban Logs...
« on: March 16, 2011, 09:40:11 PM »
I was flipping through the ban log just now... I have to say, when I ban someone (which, with one exception, has always been due to spam), I just ban the individual and I'm done with it... I'm not very creative at filling out the boxes as to why they're being banned.  I mean, they're SPAM bots... it's not like they care they're banned...

Anyway, apparently, some of the other staff/mods are a bit more creative...  Here's a few of the notes left in the ban section!

"Frankenbumping, spanning, and looks like a bot."

"Please don't spam us."

"Public account created by wandering"

" DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH SPAMBOT"

"Dupe. Sorry BnM, but you don't get a dupe when you are on probation"

"SPAM THIS, BITCH"

"I WILL DESTROY YOU"

"EAT A FAT ONE"

"This is an obvious joke account, and he has been taunting us with unnecessary political statements in virtually every post.  He's just trying to provoke the mods and other users."

"Dupe account (Wandering) and political provoking"

"Probably a bot, worthless constant topics"

"Bizarre Bot Like Posts"

Hope you enjoy!

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS Availability
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:45:30 AM »
So... I'm a little concerned by what I've seen.  It's a little early, so I'm going to continue to look at it, but at my individual store, we're not getting in very many 3DS units.  Like, literally.  We received more copies of Mario All-Stars in the initial shipment.

I know there was some talk earlier in regards to the amount of units that were shipping different places - did it ever get determined how many units were shipping to the US for launch?

Trying to raise some money to back funding for The Monopoly Story.  Weird cause, I know.  The goal is three days away, and we're a long way from hitting the goal, so if you donate, you'll likely get your money back.  If we do hit the goal, you'll get a neat gift for your donation. :D

Finally broke down and ordered Last Window on the 19th - it arrived today.  Super fast shipping on that sucker.  Ordered from DVD.CO.UK, if anyone's looking for it.

Anywhoo... can't wait to have some time to sit down and play it. :D

General Chat / Don't buy cheap-ass projectors at the drug store...

So, I stopped by the CVS/Pharmacy tonight to pick up some stuff - and they had a projector for only $100.  I bought it - I wasn't expecting cinema quality by any means... but wow.  This was total crap.  It's going back...

Nintendo Gaming / I need a screen shot...
« on: February 20, 2011, 10:18:47 PM »
I need a high-quality screen shot of a specific set up - does anyone have the ability to create this?

What I'm picturing is a scene from New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Luigi jumping off Mario's head to get a Star Coin - but in the process, knocking Mario into a pit.

I eventually want to get this made into a poster, so I need a decently high quality photo.  Any one wanna help?

NWR Forums Discord / GameCube #6 - Whoo!
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:11:28 PM »
So, I stopped at a Goodwill store tonight - and I found... a GameCube... for $5!  Sadly, there was no controllers/cables with it, but it's a black -001 with all the port covers on the bottom and such... I had to give it a good home.  This little system was originally sold on December 19, 2003 with the Zelda Collector's Edition disc (shame that didn't come with it!).  It was purchased at the Zeller's in Pincourt, Québec (my second international GameCube!). On Jan 19th 2004, it went to Nintendo for repair/refurbishment.  Very short turn around time there.  It left Nintendo's loving arms once more on Feb 9th, 2004 and went to a GameStop in St. Louis (Galleria Mall, to be exact) where it was pretty quickly sold on March 17th, 2004.  Sometime between then and today, it ended up at the Goodwill in Marion, Illinois where I purchased it. :D

Also, they had a Nintendo 64 - again, with no cables/controllers, for only $4.  This one has the memory expansion pak with it - whoo!  It was originally sold by Best Buy (unknown where from) on November 10th, 1997.  It was one of those packs that came with the gray and clear/purple controller.

All Nintendo products should come and live with me. :D

General Chat / FOX Prime Time Cartoons - Simpsons, Season 1
« on: January 23, 2011, 11:54:44 PM »
Are there many fans of the FOX Prime Time Cartoons on here?  Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama, The Cleveland Show...

I was thinking of doing something similar to the Retroactive feature where we vote on a series, watch whatever the next season is in that series, leave the thread up for (one week?  two weeks?) to watch/discuss it, then vote on the next season set to watch.  Is there enough interest in this?

General Gaming / For Science!

Using Mario Kart: Double Dash, the Wii Shop channel, the Nintendo DS Browser and the DSi Browser, I was able to connect 13 Nintendo units to my local network at the same time.

While doing this, I discovered that a very small portal has formed in the center of my entertainment room.  This portal allowed me to peer into Reggie's office.  It it my theory that the size of this portal will increase as I increase the number of Nintendo network-capable devices connected to my local network - eventually allowing me to step through the portal into Reggie's office.  Therefore, I must obtain additional Nintendo hardware.  For science.

Nintendo Gaming / More Nintendo/Digital Distribution stupidity
« on: December 28, 2010, 06:34:18 PM »
Well, as most of you know, I'm well on record for disliking Nintendo's policies and methods regarding their Digital Distribution methods, but this is amazing...

Also, as most of you know, my original Wii died and was replaced by Nintendo - and all of my data on my Wii was lost.

So, back when all the crap when down, Nintendo was "kind" enough to transfer my Wii Shop account from my original Wii to my replacement Wii.  While this did transfer my Wii Points, download history and my ability to re-download every title, this did *not* transfer the ability to actually play the games I had already downloaded.  Any games I had saved on my SD card (which was all of them) could not be played - they had to be re-downloaded first.

Well, I've accepted this, all this time - and as I've wanted to go back and play the random title, I've just went in and re-downloaded them one-on-one.  So, this is how it works:

If the game is already saved on the SD card, I cannot re-download it directly to the SD card (duh), only to the system itself.  Then, I can launch it from the SD card or from the system.  Then, I've got the game on the Wii's system memory and the SD card - so, at some point, I have to clean out the fridge and delete the games from the system's memory.

Today, I had free time while watching some 60's Batman and I decided to go in and re-download all my games, so they'd be available.  It took quite a bit of time, but I did it - re-downloading every title that I purchased before my Wii died (as I had no idea which titles I had re-downloaded and the only other option would be to try to launch each and every title, one by one).

So, I went in, re-downloaded everything (occasionally having to go into Data Management to delete some titles in order to have room for the rest of them).  Once everything was downloaded, I spot-checked a few titles on my SD card to make sure the ones I re-downloaded would run - everything I tried worked perfectly.

So, one last trip in to Data Management to delete all the games from the system.  Then, back to my SD card to actually try to play one....

"This channel cannot be launched on this Wii Console."

This was one of the exact games I tested - that worked.

So, apparently, the games I had already downloaded onto my SD card can only be played if I also have them downloaded onto my system - and I can't copy the SD versions back onto my system either.

So, now, I have to go into data management, delete the individual titles, then go back into the Wii Shop and re-download them again-again.

Physical media - all the way.

Came home from work today and found this giant package on my front porch.

Open it up and what's in it?

A Geist poster (I say poster, but it's really a thick, plastic board) and an autographed copy of the PAL version of the game.

Sweet. :)
