TalkBack / RE:Wii Online Dev Kits Released to Developers
« on: February 09, 2007, 07:01:38 AM »
Has anyone confirmed if Pokémon Battle Revolution's 12-digit Friend Code was actually to allow it to battle against DS players with Pokémon Diamond/Pearl via Wi-Fi?

I still hope that was the case and that not every game will require a separate code.

But at least developers are getting the dev kits now.  Especially if the "separate Friend Code" thing was never meant to be for all games, there's no excuse now!

We've already seen Nikki's father but I get your point.

Though I wouldn't want it to be one big family.  You'd think it'd be easier or too easy for Sylar/Mohinder/Chandra/Mr. Bennet to track everyone down if this was the case.

Quotes like that make me wonder if everyone at Sony who could potentially be interviewed are given a manual or a guidebook with BS answers to common questons, as well as other ludicrous things to say.

Actually, I remember overhearing a mom in a game store when Donkey Kong Country was new.  She was asking a clerk about it.  "Is this game okay?  I don't want violent games where they beat each other up, like that Street Fighter."  Sure, the ESRB was new (I believe Donkey Kong Country was the first Super NES game to have a rating, and that was K-A, the equivalent of E), so maybe she wasn't aware of the rating, but I thought it was pretty ridiculous that she would think that Donkey Kong was anything like that.  I don't remember how old the kid was, but I remember thinking that he was certainly capable of handling the "brutality" of Street Fighter II.  I suppose it's good that she asked, though, it shows that she's concerned (even if overly so).

From what I know of Manhunt, I think it ought to be AO.  There are too many M-rated games that are tame and if I was a parent, I might let some of my teenage kids play some of them.  But I'm less likely to be as willing to allow them to play Manhunt.

Shooters like Halo are rated M, aren't they?  I could be wrong about Halo.  But even so, there are likely games LIKE Halo that get an M.  I don't think shooting mostly alien beings with fantastical sci-fi weapons should be in the same category as Manhunt.  Even when you're shooting other humans, they're armored and it's not that gory.

Even M-rated games where you kill people realistically like in the Hitman games shouldn't be in the same category.  If Hitman: Blood Money is an M, Manhunt is a step up.  The difference is that Hitman encourages "clean" kills, and discourages unnecessary kills.  In Manhunt, you're killing more people in gory fashion, using common items more often than in Hitman.  Also, Manhunt deals with themes other than killing (like psychoticism).

The difference between M and AO is just one year, though, so I think the descriptors need to be better.

The ESRB should have video clips on their web site of examples of some of the "worst" stuff in each game.  That would help a lot.  Or at least a more detailed textual description.

I was never a big fan of Tekken for some reason.  I like the panda (named Panda?), I guess, just because I like any panda bear in anything.

If I want a Namco fighting game, I'd play probably play a Soul Calibur game instead.

Even if I was a Tekken fan, I don't think it would be enough to consider the PS3 as a purchase.  I mean, the only Xbox 360 game I'm interested in that's not also for the PC (as far as I know, yet) is Dead Rising but I'm not going to get one just for that.  It takes more than one or two or three or even a handful of exclusive games.  I need to believe that there will be a dozen must-own games in its lifetime.  Or maybe I'm just too much of a PC/Nintendo fan (though my brother did buy a Dreamcast off of eBay which included a few games like Soul Calibur).

Other than Soul Calibur II for the GameCube (and featuring Link), and probably some shoddy Tekken GBA game, what Namco fighting games are there for Nintendo systems?

I present to you a list of Capcom's DS and PSP games (according to GameFAQs), including known upcoming ones:

DS:
Gyakuten Saiban 4 (J)
Kabu Trader Shun (J)
Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team
Mega Man Star Force: Dragon (J)
Mega Man Star Force: Leo (J)
Mega Man Star Force: Pegasus (J)
Mega Man ZX
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Rockman ZX Advent (J)
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble

PSP:
Breath of Fire III
Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded
Capcom Classics Collection Remixed
Capcom Puzzle World
Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower
Devil May Cry
Finder Love: Hara Fumina - Futari no Futari de... (J)
Finder Love: Hoshino Aki - Nangoku Trouble (J)
Finder Love: Kudou Risa - First Shoot wa Kimi to (J)
Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. Portable
Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X
Mega Man: Powered Up
Monster Hunter Freedom
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd
Power Stone Collection
RockMan Dash 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX
Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble
Mega Man Legends (cancelled)

12 DS games and 19 PSP games (obviously, I'm not counting the cancelled MML).

Breakdown:
On the DS...are the three Mega Man Star Force games similar to the Mega Man Battle Network and Pokémon games in that they're different versions of essentially the same game?  That cuts down the real count of distinct games by two, and MMSF is a spinoff of MMBN from what I gather.  MMBN5 is too similar to the GBA game, the Phoenix Wright games are ports of the first two Gyakuten Saiban (J) games on the GBA, and RE: Deadly Silence is another Resident Evil remake.  That leaves us with a spinoff and its sequel (Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent), a sequel/spinoff (Gyakuten Saiban 4), a spinoff (VJ: Double Trouble), and whatever the heck Kabu Trader Shun (J) is.

On the PSP...remakes and ports include Breath Of Fire III, Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, Mega Man: Powered Up, Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, and Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins.  I would guess that Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, and and the cancelled Mega Man Legends are as well.  I'm not sure if Darkstalkers Chronicle is a remake or a compilation.  Compilations include Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded, Capcom Classics Collection Remixed, Capcom Puzzle World (I think), and Power Stone Collection.  That leaves us a few, including three Japanese Finder Love games.  What are they?  They sound like a dating simulation, and I'd guess they were very similar, like Mega Man Star Force on the DS.  I don't know what the Monster Hunter games are about, RockMan Dash 2 sounds like a sequel to yet another Mega Man spinoff.

Points:
-both handhelds have several remakes.  Three of the four DS remakes are upgrades from the GBA, and therefore don't require much upgrading, they're more like ports.  However, the Phoenix Wright games could be considered new for North Americans.  The PSP's remakes are much more upgraded but typically are of more classic games.
-most of the other games are sequels and spinoffs.  Very few original games or new franchises on either handheld.
-the PSP has more games overall, and considering that the PSP also has four or five compilations, it has even more.

Conclusion:
Capcom likes the PSP and that is evident by them producing more games for it, but does very little that is actually new for either handheld.  Boo!

EDIT: Stupid smilies in Resident Evil and Viewtiful Joe's titles when abbreviated...  >_<

I can't see the pics, since I'm at work.  But it sounds pretty bad.

So the cut-scenes are recorded as video for the PS2 version and then further recompressed for the PC?    Boo.  They should be rendered real-time like the original GCN version.

Then again, videos would be easier to rip straight from the game for other use.  If only someone would record the GCN's cutscenes directly and at extremely high-quality!

Same here.  I started with the awesome Dragon Warrior (NES) deal (they gave out the game!) way back in Jan. 1991 (Mega Man III issue).  Then I stopped in December 2001 (Super Smash Bros. Melee).  I only resubscribed later for the bonuses, so I got the Zelda Collectors Edition Disc and a couple other things, but then it ended again in Jan. 2007 (The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess).

Funny how both of my "final issues" are of the big Nintendo games that are at the start of a new console's life.  You'd think that would be reason enough to subscribe, but no...

If Nintendo Power can't have exclusive info, they should have exclusive (and regular) bonus stuff.  Maybe demo discs are passé now with downloadable content, but that would've been enough to keep me going.  Or Wii Points cards.  Or something along those lines.

Matt is going to encounter Jessica next episode.  I wonder if with his mind-reading powers, he might be able to hear Nikki's thoughts even when she is Jessica and vice-versa?

Maybe he'll be able to help her out, possibly putting more strain on his own marriage?

I still think the best episodes were the "Homecoming" one where Sylar attempts to get Claire, and the episode right after, "Six Months Ago" where we learn more about Sylar's "origins".  Also, I think those episodes covered Hiro's attempt to save Charlie which was cool too.

Legal mumbo-jumbo is ridiculous.  In cases like Chrono Trigger and GoldenEye 007, it should be well worth working out.  So someone may have to write a few more cheques.  At least some money will be flowing in, better than none.

The longer this sits, the more chance people will give up on waiting for particular games and take the ROM route and then the original publishers and developers don't get any money at all, and hurts their chances of getting money for their other properties.

The Virtual Console was never designed for "collectors", which IMO is pretty dumb if people are willing to spend the money to get every game in a series.

I suppose most people aren't hardcore enough to actually "collect" VC games, but it shouldn't be hard to add an optional Wii Channel for people to consolidate and sort their games instead of having a Channel per game.  Like VC Channels for genres (Zelda is SO NOT an RPG, stupid GameFAQs!), consoles (duh), favorites, custom, etc.  I know they want to keep it simple but they could at least then lump them all in one Channel instead of taking up so much room.  Ironically, it'd seem like it's simply a retro system if the majority of the Channels are VC games...

Of course, the biggest sign that it's not for collectors is its limited space. 512 MB?  Come on.  I remember an interesting article about how many games should theoretically fit on there, and you can fit many, but they were going by raw ROM sizes (without the manual and emulator) and you likely won't be having the larger Neo-Geo games and definitely not any CD-based games on there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't each VC download contain both the Rom and the emulator for the Wii? I assume that's where the extra file size is coming from.

It also includes a digital copy of the game manual as well, which probably takes up the most space in some games, especially NES games.
Technically, the manual shouldn't need to be big, unless they have lots of screenshots and other images.  Text really should be as simple as one text character = one byte.

I was really hoping that the manuals would've been digital scans of the original manuals, or the original digital files used to make them.  >_<

Relax, dude.  I could've sworn you said something regarding Sega Genesis not being on the Virtual Console, maybe it was something about Sega not wanting it to happen, but that was long ago and it's possible I could've mixed you up with someone else.  Sorry about the mix-up, and sorry for sounding so harsh if I did.  But please chill out a little.

From what it sounds like, you're saying that they had the same processor, but the sound chip, amount of RAM, and how developers utilized the system were different.

Humans have something like 80% of the same DNA as a fruitfly and 60% of the same DNA as a banana.  I remember seeing that in a science museum.  Even if I'm remembering wrong, I'm sure it was over half, or a sizeable fraction, but my point is even if the processor is the same, but the only thing the same, that doesn't make them alike.  There are a number of games where it's kind of hard to mistake one for the other.  No one confuses a person with a fly or a piece of fruit.

But we're going off-track here.  Regardless of the processor and emulation methods involved, I think we agree that the Wii should be more than capable of handling Neo-Geo games and also should have them there on the VC.  (No need to start getting into technical knowledge showdowns about the Genesis!)

Wait, what?  >_>

And weren't YOU the one who once said that the VC couldn't emulate Genesis games because it couldn't handle "blast processing" or some other "reason"?

The Neo-Geo was meant to bring the arcade experience home, so the Neo-Geo arcade games you'd often see in arcades and the home versions were exactly the same.  (Or at least they were supposed to be, I think there was some controversy when one of the latest Samurai Shodown games was toned down for the home version.)  The hardware was the same.  But the hardware and games were (relatively) rare and expensive, with some games as much as $300.  The original game system, when adjusted for inflation, I believe is said to be nearly $1000 in today's dollars ($993 or something), the most expensive game system ever, and anyone with a real and decent-sized library must be made of money.

Hence, most Neo-Geo fans today probably enjoy the games via MAME.  Can you blame them?

Since SNK stuck it out with beautifully animated 2D sprite-based games for as long as they could, even "recent" games like SNK Vs. Capcom and Metal Slug 6 and King Of Fighters 2002 could be considered "retro".  All the Neo-Geo games would be awesome to have on the VC so that people can experience them without being rich or using MAME.

I don't know much about the WonderSwan, other than that it had some Final Fantasy ports, a version of Mega Man & Bass, a few Digimon games, and the Capcom Vs. SNK Cardfighters Clash games.  I don't care about Digimon, MM & B and the FFs are on the GBA, and CVSCFC is on the DS, so I think the WonderSwan is probably passable.

I heard that in Japan, a couple GBA games were advertised as being playable on the DS and/or put right in the DS sections, even going so far as having DS-like packaging, and that was theoretically why they sold better than they might have.

I remember that FF V Advance was advertised with a Japanese woman playing it on a DS Lite.

FF VI Advance came out, didn't it?  Chrono Trigger Advance still could.  Though, yeah, if they're going to port it to a handheld, the DS is still a better choice than the GBA.  I was already saying that about Mother 3 (J), and even earlier.

If handhelds had the five-year "lifespan" of support like Nintendo consoles, all major GBA releases in late 2006 really should've been on the DS.  And since the DS has been around for a couple years already, that should have "obsoleted" the GBA much quicker.

If they did, it would be awhile before we see the Metal Slug games.

However, there's The King Of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, Bust-A-Move, and various other good games.  Oh, yeah, Matrimelee and Rage Of The Dragons.  My brother likes Windjammers for some reason, and I can usually beat him on Money Puzzle Exchanger.

Neo-Geo games need to be enjoyed by more people, especially so-called oldschool gamers.  And the VC would be perfect for it...all games use only four buttons, so the four face buttons on the Classic Controller are fine.
