Nintendo Gaming / RE:Namco mailing Tales fans questionaire
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:23:52 AM »
Hey, I like the Mana series, and even made it through Children, even though it was tedious.  They could still redeem themselves with a good Mana game one day.

And I was mostly joking about Tales Of Mana.  It just seemed like a good fit, if only physically, of the "Tales Of..." and "...Of Mana" titles.  We know that doesn't mean anything.

After all, VGMaps.com's April Fool's maps last year (Mega Man Solid X: Guns Of The Mavericks) was a mix of Mega Man X and Metal Gear Solid, since the bosses in MGS sounded like they'd fit in with MMX (Revolver Ocelot, Psycho Mantis, etc.), and it didn't turn out all that popular.  Even the people who helped me with the project thought that even though the names fit, the game maps were kind of silly.  I'm still proud of the VR Mission: Boss Survival stage (the classic MM boss rematch) map, though.

But then again Tales and Mana fans are probably more of the same people than Mega Man and Metal Gear fans.  Tales and Mana are both action RPGs and MM and MG are totally different.

Yeah, I got into this thinking it'd be a one-or-two season thing and be done with.  I still hope so, despite the creator saying that he has ideas for five or six seasons.

Within the show, there are only a couple weeks until New York supposedly goes boom.  So if they did stretch it out to more than a couple seasons most likely they'd have other issues (and maybe a new set of "heroes", since part of the charm of the series are their attempts to cope with the powers and the consequences).  But how can you top a catastrophe like New York blowing up?

Maybe you saw that shortly after they got a shipment of Wiis in and maybe they finally sold all the PS3s and didn't bother to restock or even order any more but haven't gotten around to changing what product would go on that shelf space just yet.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Ruminations on the Next Generation
« on: February 14, 2007, 05:25:11 AM »
That makes more sense.

Everyone thinks the Wii will be obsoleted earlier because of the lack of high-def graphics.  But because of the novelty of the Wii controls, since it seems to have proven itself (I think), or at least should be more than just a fad, Nintendo should be able to have it last as long as usual.  The N64 and GameCube were in the shadow of the PlayStations, and also had very little in each of their last years, but Nintendo still didn't cut them short to four years.  If the Wii is on top this generation, it's possible games will still be developed for it even after the release of the next Nintendo console (more likely so if it's backwards-compatible with Wii games) - so unless everybody can afford a good TV and suddenly demands high-def graphics, the competition won't force Nintendo to move ahead early.

The five-year "rule" is boggling.  I'm having trouble imagining myself as an old geezer, explaining to my grandkids about the differences between over a dozen Nintendo consoles that must seem like a blur of old stuff to them.  I can certainly tell the difference between NES and Super NES-like graphics, and even Super NES and Genesis graphics, but our grandkids might not be able to.  It would be awesome though if the Wii does become historically recognized as changing the landscape of games forever (though I'm thinking my grandkids might find it primitive).  And in several years, who knows what control setups there'll be...maybe the Wii will be forgotten when something else insanely different takes over.  I can't comprehend that.  Like that PS9 commercial with the video games being snorted up your nose and interfacing with your brain directly.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Ruminations on the Next Generation

Nintendo has always had five-year consoles (except for the NES).  The Super NES was 1991, the N64 was 1996, the GameCube was 2001, and the Wii in 2006.

Not necessarily saying that the Wii must necessarily last until 2011 where it will be replaced with the next one.  (Though I'm confused about the predictions in the first post...first it says that Nintendo will be early, but then it's saying it'll be a year later than the others in 2013-2014 by the end of that post?)  The prediction that the next Nintendo will be 2014-2015 is nuts, considering that if they kept their five-year lifespan, we'd be seeing the console AFTER next in 2016.

Well, we know Spak won't help us with a campaign for Super Mario RPG, then!  :P

The NWR community isn't very big, and you should know that Nintendo does its own thing.  It'd be as effective as a petition, basically.  Maybe a bit more since they know every submitted question is coming from a Wii owner.  I suppose it doesn't hurt if you're willing to put in the couple minutes each day to write them out.  And Nintendo will take notice if there is enough of an outcry.  But when it comes to things like pricing, don't expect them to necessarily budge just because a handful of people tell them they should lower it. Heck, everyone wants lower prices, but some people won't actually buy more games just because of it.

Despite that, I might help sometimes if I had no other ideas for questions and someone had a clear campaign in mind.

I would think that general pathway patterns laid out should lead either a single zombie or a group of zombies around obstacles to you or whatever their target is.  So it's more of a recognition of landscape thing, and like I said, it's not like it's AI for every individual zombie.  Sure, some smarter enemy types can have different patterns and whatnot.  But AI isn't a situation where every single sentient being (if zombies could even be called that) needs an individual "brain".

Now that I think about it, if everything in the game can be used as a weapon, there might be more physics processing than zombie AI.  Now that might be an issue.

You're forcing my hand here.

You can come up with reasons HOW a being could fly like Nathan does.  (In fact, in some cases it's not even flying...there was that one time Peter copied his abilities and was standing in the air.)  Instant launching, propulsion, gravity negation, yadda yadda.  But if you really want to explain the technical stuff behind it, it's still not realistic.  You could have all these flying-friendly features in every cell, but could there be so much there that wouldn't've been noticed by a doctor at some point in Nathan's life?  And that he'd have perfect control of his powers, since he obviously doesn't make a practice of flying?  Even birds need to learn how to fly.

I don't think I believe in evolution (or I'm not supposed to) but from what I understand, the evolution of eyeballs in animals is like this:
1. over several generations, some skin cells on the "face" of an animal develop sensitivity to light.
2. over several more generations, the skins cells fold in, concave/dimple-like, so that the cavity of light-sensitive cells can determine the direction of the light.
3. over several more generations, the cavity becomes deeper, so they can more easily tell where the light is coming from, and then eventually the cavity of the light-sensitive cells become a spherical opening.
4. over several more generations, the surface of the light-sensitive cells develop a sort of mucus that focuses the light, so they can see the light more sharply.
5. and then after several more generations, the mucus layer develops into a vitreous layer, with a ball that gives muscular control over the visual focus, rods and cones to see definition and colour, an eyelid to cover it, eyelashes to keep the dust out, etc.

It's not like some slug-thing gave birth to a slug-thing with developed eyeballs all of the sudden.

Evolution is mutation over MANY generations.  Whether specialized or accidental, it has to do with survival of those that have an advantage to survive long enough to breed and pass on their differences.  That's how I understand this theory.

As I said, you might explain how someone flies.  But genetically, how did they get such a sudden difference in cells that no one noticed?  The only way Nathan would be able to fly is if several generations of people before him were likely to be killed if they didn't take to the air.  Someone would jump higher than their father, or negate gravity enough for some longer "air time", until finally someone like Nathan is born who can suspend themselves in the air and rocket away.

Ignoring the time component involved (he could've had his cells altered if you don't buy Dr. Suresh's "cusp of evolution" idea), I think it's still ridiculous that he'd have the control.  And you'd think after flying away from Mr. Bennet that he'd be exhausted, as I'm sure the energy he requires wouldn't exactly be minor.  And yet, he's chipper at that moment, from the exhileration of flying that should've tired him out.  There are so many flaws in realism, is it worth trying to explain?

Realistic "powers" by evolution would be minor enhancements of things we can already do, so minor it's unlikely to be noticed as being inhuman.  Higher jumping, better vision (perhaps night vision), better hearing, faster (but not extremely quick) healing, quicker thinking, stronger and/or faster muscles, more stamina, etc.

I'd really like to hear someone's explanation for the more ludicrous powers like Hiro's time altering and teleportation ability.  It's a wonder that when he goes back six months that he doesn't miss the planet entirely, as the galaxy is constantly in motion, and the galaxy itself moves.  You're telling me that genetically, you can distort the space/time continuum, AND also have enough control that your cells don't scatter or tear apart and that you don't end up out in space or physically in something that was there before?  All of the sudden how he takes his clothes with him but not a chunk of his surroundings such as the floor are the least of our concerns.

You see my point now?  HOW the powers might be possible is not the focus of this show.

Everyone should make a question about Wii online games or particular VC games every day and Nintendo will get the hint.

"Would you download Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars if it was available on the Virtual Console?"
-Yes, I would.
-Well, I wouldn't not.

Etc.

I didn't play Kid Icarus until later, possibly not until the Super NES days.  I was only familiar with Kid Icarus through the Captain N character, which was not really the best introduction.

I don't feel as much of a sense of nostalgia with Kid Icarus as I do with other Nintendo franchises that I got into in the NES era, and I don't think I ever truly finished it.  It's one of those slightly black sheep franchises to me.  It's been called Metroid's "sister game" but Metroid is big now and if not for Pit's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you'd think he was dead.

You know, I haven't even tried much fishing in TP, especially not in Lake Hylia.
Well, in Twilight Princess, just like in Ocarina of Time, you'll want to go to the designated fishing pond area.  Many people thought the fishing was bad because they didn't even get to try out the rod with the reel that's only at Hena's fishing pond.

However, me and my dad still prefer Ocarina Of Time's.  It's tiring to use that reel!

The review here on NWR has made me cautious.  I don't usually base purchases off of reviews but it confirmed what I thought about the simplicity of the games.

Since I don't feel a pressing need to get a third controller, I don't think I'm really in a hurry to get the game right away.  But when I do need a third controller, at some point in the future, I will most likely be picking up Wii Play.

"Wii Motor Sports" was once mentioned, but probably dropped as there wouldn't be much variety, even with different vehicles.

That said, I hope they have more to Wii Music than just conducting and drums.  But I'm not sure what.  The Wii Remote would make for a really awkward bow for a string instrument, or any sort of pipe instrument like a flute.  And it's not big enough to be a guitar.  Then again it could be a really big "pick" for some air guitar.

Sure, there's already extreme violence.  But, oh!  It's a pair of nipples!  Gotta punch the rating up a notch just for that!

As I mentioned in the other topic, I don't think we'll EVER see another Virtual Console Monday that has the VC debut of four (if you count the Ice Climbers, Popo and Nana, as separate) Smash Bros.!

Even SMB only debuted two (Mario and Luigi were previously in Mario Bros.) and LoZ only had three (if you count Ganon as Ganondorf).

(Oh, wait, I suppose the N64 VC release of Super Smash Bros. would debut five characters...Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Ness...that's the only single game that can beat this Monday's offerings in terms of Smash Bros.!)

So much Nintendo love.

From what I've seen of Dead Rising, there doesn't seem to be much time to even see how much intelligence the zombies have.  I always see the main character running through a bunch of them, or lunging into a crowd with an axe or chainsaw in hand and just slicing everything into ribbons.

If there is some AI, I would guess that it's probably just coordinating groups of zombies.  There really isn't any point for every zombie to have their own individual AI mind.  And in any case, the only "intelligence" seems to be to group in numbers and move toward the player.  They're certainly not agile or dextrous enough to be a threat in any other way.  Don't expect zombies to get a hold of a sniper rifle and snipe you in the head the instant you move away from some cover, for instance.  And from what I saw on X-Play that one time, some non-zombie NPCs aren't that bright either.

I think the Wii could handle a scaled-down version.  Do you really need all the detail on a zombie's clothes when in a few seconds you'll dispatch them and then you won't care how they look?  Are all the polygons even necessary?  I'm not saying the zombies ought to be totally textureless or blocky, but the detail could be taken down a little in both regards and I'd still play it.

In response to Caterkiller:
Causing Mechbeth to crash into the munitions factory (or whatever that was) on Planet Macbeth was the high point in Star Fox 64 for the Rumble Pak, in which case I believe that Star Fox 64 will be made available at about the same time a possible Classic Controller Rumble Pak is released.  That clip's got to be there for something, right?

The N64 did have a lot of good multiplayer memories, and there do need to be more games released there.  However my heart is still on Super NES games; most of the major franchises have had their best games there (Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby: Super Star, etc.).

In response to BlackNMild:
Gunstar Heroes is a Genesis platform shooter (run and gun!) by Treasure.  Like in the vein of Contra, but cartoony, hectic, and extremely challenging.  The characters are wacky and named after colours (the main characters are Red and Blue), and some of the bosses are really neat.  It's just chaotic and crazy.  The GBA game Gunstar Super Heroes is very similar, but the Genesis one is the original.
