Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendogs: Whatcha gonna name your pup?

Yes, they do. When you are going for a walk and the bongo sounds starts a-playin', the dog is about to do its business.

As cute as the game may be, the promotional displays are extremely annoying. The large stand-up ones that bark when you walk by. Darn those things are awful. A local store put their's on a shelf so no one under 9 feet tall would set it off.

General Gaming / RE:No HD DVD drive at 360 launch?
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:18:56 AM »
That article was written June 28th. Why hasn't this received more attention like the lack of HD in the Revolution did?

Basically, if I understand this correctly, the initial XBOX 360 systems will only be compatible with DVD discs, while the second generation systems will be compatible with DVD and HD-DVD. Perhaps I haven't followed Microsoft enough, but do they plan to release games on HD-DVD discs later? If so, wouldn't that render the first generation systems incomptaible with future games without a potentially costly upgrade? What's worse, no HD output or a big batch of systems that are incompatible with games designed for its own system? Someone please correct me if I wrong here.

Edit: It seems that comments on the article point to games not being released on HD-DVD discs. That makes this "upgrade" all the more pathetic. At least with the PS2 and XBOX DVD playback the neccessary disc drive was already built in, so it was a mainly software addition. The discs were used for the benefit of the game, with DVD playback as an extra feature. Now they plan to upgrade the disc drive for the sole reason of adding movie playback. If this doesn't show how gaming systems are moving away from gaming I don't know what does.

When the video is playing it says "Your download is ready. Right-click here to save" along the bottom. I think you can figure it out from there...

Stevey: He said that the face buttons had the coloring of the Super Famicom, not the Super Nintendo. Which means they look like this.

I absolutely love that fan-made concept art. The menus are simple and elegant and everything has that "cool" factor. I hope the real thing looks like that. Of course, it is only a menu.

I don't really like the glossy controller without protruding joysticks, but that isn't the focus of the entire gallery.

« on: July 15, 2005, 11:28:00 AM »
They were the codenames for the Nintendo systems before they were released.

NTR=Nitro -> DS
DOL=Dolphin -> Cube

If you look at the model numbers for Nintendo's products you will see that they correspond with their system's codename. The NTR-001 is the DS system. NTR-004 is the stylus. The games have model numbers like this too. (Well, sort of. The discs have a model number of DOL-006, but there is also a unique game-based product code. For example, DL-DOL-GZLE-USA is the U.S. version of Wind Waker.)

TalkBack / RE:Band Bros. Expansion Pack Coming Soon
« on: July 06, 2005, 08:15:12 AM »
This is basically just expanding on what IceCold said, but here it is anyway...

What I believe is that in order to accept data on the GBA cart a DS game needs to do these things:

-Read the GBA cart (Obvious, I know)
-Verify that the cart is a compatible update (My copy of The Minish Cap shouldn't be patched to a game)
-Patch the information the game is looking for into the game (Such as added music)

What I'm trying to say here is that game is probably looking for certain things (new songs, new race tracks, new characters, etc.). This means that it doesn't just take the entire GBA cart and apply it as a patch to the DS game without discretion, but instead only takes what it can verify. So, unless someone can disguise online functionality as a new melody or find a game that is programmed to look for it, I don't think you can easily add things like online functionality to the game.

In short, the game will only use expansions that have the new "stuff" the game is looking for.

Now that's interesting.  I wonder how the expansion concept works.  Does the original DS game have to programmed with the option in mind or does the GBA cart just detect the DS game?  If the DS game doesn't have to be programmed with it in theory people could make fan mods for any DS game.

I believe that the DS games must be specifically programmed for this type of expansion, as well as being programmed to only look for certain things (such as additional song information). Otherwise, on games like Mario Kart DS, a patch could be easily applied to exploit the online system for cheating and who knows what else.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: GBA comm port USB cable - network play?
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:43:21 PM »
Well, I am 99% sure that the GBA link cable isn't USB, so you would definently need to do more than rewiring. In addition to what you mentioned above, I beleive that GBA games require the speed of the link cable when doing multiplayer or else everything fails, unless the game is programmed otherwise. This is why the wireless adapter only works on specially-programmed games. This is what I've heard.

TalkBack / RE:EDITORIAL: The Moment
« on: June 30, 2005, 04:15:21 PM »
I never played Resident Evil 4 (or any RE game for that matter), but I completely agree with what you said about things like The Wind Waker. Everytime I see those credits I feel connected in a way to the game and to Link--the music, the picture bubbles, and the preceeding dialog all create that experience.

And then, as you said, so many people play games with mindless killing and gratuitous adult themes. I'm not saying all games with violence are bad or not worthy of being played, but why would you want to play a game that lets you mindlessly kill people as you blankly stare at screen when you could play a game that connects to your emotions?

You do know that it is a GBA game, right? Anyway, to answer your second question, no you can not use the DK bongos. I don't think there is a release date as of yet.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Bomberman DS (except it's just called Bomberman)
« on: June 21, 2005, 10:08:49 PM »
To those of you who have this, would you say its worth it if I don't have someone to play it with? My only main friend who has a DS is moving away soon.

540
This touchpad-type idea is really lame. When I play a game I want feedback. I want to feel some resistance and I want to feel the actual buttons to know that I'm pressing them. With this, I can't feel where a button is. I can't feel the joystick. I don't think that this is the Revolutionary controller.

It would be nice just to get a confirmation that he browses these forums. I think its very probable he does/has.

If you are reading this though, I appreciate what you are doing for Nintendo. You give a good image for Nintendo and really get me excited about new products. You rock!

Also, having the GBA/peripheral slot allows for them to put in more electronics without it protruding out from the system much. A tilt sensor could but put into the slot and you might not even see it in there. Versus a USB port which means that the entire accessory would be revealed.

I wish I could, but I don't have a digital camera. I used to have a Kodak 1 MP a long while back, but we gave it away because we never used it.

This program really rocks, next I'm thinking of doing a large one of Mario (from the PM:TTYD artwork at Nintendo.com)

I made one from this picture: http://faernis.free.fr/images/zelda%20excalibur.jpg

It turned out well, though I should have used a smaller dot size. Probably about 3 mm. I tested out 1 mm and it's not good. It just makes it look like a standard image stretched out.

I got this game a couple days ago and I'm on puzzle 32 (which is posing a challenge). I'm going the hint-free route and I'm sure it will prolong the game's lastibility. It's an awesome game and I can't wait to play with a friend.

As someone said before, it's funny how you come across a challenging puzzle, and the next are easy as can be.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolutionary Controller
« on: May 20, 2005, 06:21:04 PM »
I believe the top two candidates are motion-sensory and force feedback. I'm hoping it's force feedback--not too different, no learning curve, but more realism. As long as the force isn't too strong I don't think we need to worry about carpal tunnel syndrome or any other health concerns.

If Nintendo takes the route of gyroscopes, I hope it is only for tilting. To use Ian's example, I don't want to get tired when I'm playing Zelda from swinging my arm the enire time. The only way I could see it being beneficial to the game experience is to control the camera, as some one has pointed out.

Also, I'm really glad it's not so radical that it can't play traditional games.

The first ON video was apparently leaked, what is the likelyhood that would happen twice? Not very high.
