TalkBack / RE: Virtual Console Details Exposed
« on: November 04, 2006, 11:05:40 AM »
I really hope a future policy/firmware change allows games from all regions. Really, they are only hurting themselves with that. Every Virtual Console sale is almost all profit for Nintendo. Also, games on SD cards should be playable on any console, but only copied to/from the console you bought it with. That way, a person could bring their Virtual Console games to a friend's house (just like they could in the old days) and play it with them.

Everything else sounds pretty good.

To put opinions on video gaming anywhere near those of race/gender equality is unfair. I know you were just trying to make a point, but those are completely different subjects. If I prefer music from the 1970s over music from today, does that make me a bad person? How does not embracing every change made in the entertainment industry make Ian bad?

Racism/sexism take away others' ability to live a happy life. At worst, Ian's opinions only make himself miss out on some fun games.

I doubt that (m)any Wii games or original Virtual Console content will be designed for any GameCube-compatible controllers (Bongos, GBA-link, etc.).

429
Yeah, I wasn't suggesting that the Wiimote should be used for control, but I am saying that if any game (Wii or GameCube) wants to use the classic controller it does have to be able to interface with the remote.

Speaking of which, can NES games be played with a sideways Wiimote? Or are all Virtual Console games only playable with the classic controller?

I think that there are probably technical reasons for this being the case (as mentioned before). Realize that the classic controller plugs in to the remote. In order to have the classic controller work with GameCube games, there would need to be some sort of wrapper around the games that allowed communication with the Wii remote so that the GameCube controller could be emulated.

Unless the GameCube's operating system was running at all times and the games accessed controllers through the OS rather than interfacing with the hardware directly. In that case, the functionality could probably just be added to the OS.

The point is, if this were terribly easy to implement, then Nintendo probably would have. After all, I'm sure there are people who would have bought a classic controller just to get a more standard button layout than the traditional GCcontroller (everyone says the GC controller is not well suited to fighting games).

If anything, Ian deserves respect simply for putting up with the garbage people throw at him. You can say that he does the same to all of us with his frequent complaints, but he doesn't pick on specific forum members like others do to him.

Many of his points are valid and he does not always criticize Nintendo. I have seen several instances where he stated that Nintendo did a good job. To say that he tries to find fault in everything is not true.

« on: November 03, 2006, 02:01:20 PM »
It would solve the problem for games like Nintendogs (if the franchise comes to Wii), but a built-in microphone would not be suitable for online communication. The quality would likely be very low and speaking into the middle of a controller for extended periods of time would be clunky. Plus, if you are in the middle of a motion-sensitive game, then you can't just pull the remote to your mouth.

If Nintendo plans to have any voice communication, an external microphone is the way to go.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Kiosk
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:45:07 PM »
I got to play the Wii tonight! My father and I went to GameStop and they had a kiosk there. I was dissapointed to see that it was turned off and there was no controller in sight. After a couple minutes, the employee said my dad could pay if he gave his license. I asked if I could play if he gave his license and they let me.

It was a pretty neat experience. Excite Truck was definitely fun, but I didn't play enough to fully adjust to the controller. It is very sensitive so the player must make small movements. During my first race I must have crashed about a dozen times and couldn't collect anything. In later races, I was doing considerably better. Since Exicte Truck has very "floaty" mechanics, you can not get a full grasp at how well the motion-sensing works.

Going into the Wii menu (accessed at any time by pressing the "Home" button) allowed me to use the pointer functionality. I did not expect for it to be so precise and easy. When you see videos on the Internet, the shaking cursor gives you an impression of a clunky interface, but it is really great.

The controller itself is incredibly small. I had heard this before, but I was still surprised at its size. I found it very comfortable to hold in either direction (pointer or NES-style).

Ummm...what? Why would they require that?

I highly doubt it. You can see the bottom of it has a bendable cord "connector" much like Nintendo's official attachment (seen here). They probably just took the wire out to make the image appear cleaner and less cluttered.

I too hate the circular bases. I could never execute the trick I wanted to in Tony Hawk 4 on Xbox.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Getting a Wii and selling your 'Cube?
« on: October 15, 2006, 08:26:10 PM »
After having to re-purchase an NES and N64 after getting rid of them, only to realize that I wanted them back, I decided not to sell my systems ever again. I am one of those people who can get sentimentally attached to any little thing. Even though the Wii is backward-compatible, I couldn't rid myself of that trusty purple cube.

Edit: Plus I will probably keep my Wii upright, and I don't want any cables to attach to the top of the system and possibly pull it over.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Pre-Order Lines...
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:32:36 AM »
The woman ahead of me was a mother who was buying the system for her children. She told me that she had waited in line (either for a pre-order or at launch) for the GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, and DS Lite. Even though she was buying for her kids, she was pretty knowledgeable about the different game systems.

My GameStop had about 35 people in line. The first person showed up at 5:00 AM, the last people showed up not long before 10:00 AM (store opening). I was in line at 7:30 and was 15th in line. From what I heard, most people showed up from 6:00 to 7:20. The store accepted 29 pre-orders.

Summary: I have secured a pre-order! (System, Remote, Nunchaku, Retro, Red Steel, Zelda)

When does your GameStop open?

This is the perfect setup for me. I just happen to have Friday off of school, and my mom never has to work on Fridays. So I can wait outside at GameStop while she goes to the bookstore and other close stores.

How early should a person get to the store if they want to get a reserve in? An hour before opening? More?

This is pretty exciting for me. The only time I tried to get a console at launch was the DS, but reserves were plentiful for it (plus my local Target received a bunch of them).

I think the whole point is to reserve a specific system so you don't have to wait in line and can pick up the system at your leisure.

I called my GameStop up and they are not yet taking pre-orders. I really hope that Friday is correct. If so, I could probably convince my mom to put a reserve in for me (because some of us are still in school).

If we really want to be picky, it should be "Wii systems" or "Wii consoles". I remember Nintendo sending out a message a while back (probably through their press site) about how people should say "GameBoy Advance Systems" and not "GameBoy Advances".

That is a good point. Having a memory card that is standard across multiple platforms (i.e., SD cards can be used with the Wii and PC) would make hacking saves pretty easy, unless encryption is implemented. If the game doesn't verify that the data is actually possible (300 stars in Mario? Preposterous!), then it could have some interesting results. Is this possible with the PSP?

By the time the first drawing is made I will (hopefully) already have a Wii. So even if I won, I would just give away or sell the new Wii.

True, but that only includes friends that live nearby. With the Wii being online-enabled, you could swap game saves with anyone across the world (provided you have swapped friends codes). So if I hear that a PGC forum member has a game save that I really want, he/she could send it to me. That has never been possible without 3rd party perhiperals and a computer.
