Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo online argument
« on: February 04, 2007, 08:20:48 AM »
To clarify, my desire for a "community-based system" is my hope an online-enabled system where, in addition to "hardcore" titles, there are also titles that appeal to less competitive types. I had a lot of fun taking turns playing Super Mario games back in day with friends and I still do today. I want online games that are simple and fun like that to exist alongside more competitive online experiences.

Nevermind, I have seen that one here before. It is not blocked by Adblock, just the ads I don't want to see.

I swear its True.

If you actually received this (and didn't make it), then that is awesome.

Firefox + Adblock + Filterset G has taken away banner ads for me, so I never get cool prizes anymore.

That would be an interesting game. It would be cool being able to play a Pokemon game like that too. You and a couple friends traveling across the world battling, training, getting to know each other. The problem is, in an MMO everyone is out for themselves. There's no real sense of connection with other users.

That is the kind of online gaming I want, too. Of course, developers should be able to make an online competitive FPS if they want to, but I would love it if we saw more community-based games online.

I want the Wii itself to be a community-based system. That's why I think it is so important that we have the option to see when friends are online and invite them to a game. It is much more natural and fun to see a friend is playing the Wii and simply invite them to your Animal Crossing town than it is to open your gate, call them up, ask if they can play a game, tell them to get on Animal Crossing, and wait for them to enter your town. It might be a small difference, but I think with the current system friends have to jump through too many hoops to play together.

Edit: Smash_Brother sums it up nicely.

What system is this coming out for? Will she be a character in the next Smash Bros. game? IS SHE SOME TYPE OF POKEYMAN?

I agree. I don't see anything wrong with that solution. Nintendo needs to do whatever they need to do to allow for the most versatile system they can within the constraints of friend codes.

But why does that constraint need to be there? Like I have stated time and time again, Nintendo just needs to make online play part of their parental controls. Parents can restrict the experience for kids (like no in-game communication), and the rest of us can have a better online system. One big barrier is just the fact that both people have to add each other before playing together. Why can't a friend just say, "This is my Wii Number, invite me to a game of Smash Bros. later"? That would make things so much easier.

Oh, I would like to add to my ideal Nintendo online setup by saying people should be able to choose a Wii to associate with their number/name. That is, I should not have to manually set Miis to each person on my friend list--a person should be able to choose their own Mii avatar.

My ideal Nintendo online system:

Each person has an an account tied to their system. It might be number (like current Wii Numbers) or it might be a user name of their choosing. If I want to play with my friend, I just add him to my friends list. If he wants to do the same he can, but he doesn't have to. Everyone has the option to show their online status to people on their friends list. When I see that a friend is online, I can send a request asking them to play a game. During gameplay, if I find an opponent that I like to play against, I can add him/her to my list to play against later. If a parent is concerned about online play, they can use parental controls to only allow play and/or communication between approved friends.

* * *

After reading that, does anything really sound out of the question? Most of my suggestions deal only with how the friends list is maintained. I think that Nintendo's current network could allow all of the above, but their policy stands in the way.

I am not a hardcore online gamer. I owned an Xbox years ago with an Xbox Live subscription and ended up selling the system. I don't need the insults, elitism, or any of the other crap that comes with Xbox Live. Nintendo can create an online system that is as fun and simple as the Wii itself, they just need to think differently.

Friend codes are not a requirement of a free service, they are a safeguard put into place by Nintendo. The only money it might save them is in the form of avoided lawsuits, but they could just use parental controls to avoid that problem.

I could excuse a small (very minimal) amount of advertising with Nintendo's online service in order to pay for it, but friend codes are just unnecessary road blocks. I don't need voice/video chat or anything like that, but I would really like it if Nintendo put a little more effort into their online plan. Since the service is free, I do appreciate any effort they make, but the current setup is probably hurting them in the eyes of Xbox/PlayStation owners. Not their target audience, I know, but a sale is a sale.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Are $40 games here to stay?
« on: February 03, 2007, 06:38:02 AM »
I really like the idea of $40 games. It was a pleasant suprise that Viewtiful Joe only cost me $40 back in the day, despite being a very solid game. Games that have lower production costs like Brain Age or Cooking Mama should reflect that in their price point. Same thing with classic game compilations. I think a $10 (or more) discount can do a lot to persuade a potential buyer.

360/PS3: $60/game ($200 gets 3.33 games, $600 gets 10 games)
Average Wii: $50/game ($200 gets 4 games, $600 gets 12 games)
Budget Wii: $40/game ($200 gets 5 games, $600 gets 15 games)

With a budget game pricing on Wii, you get 50% more games than with normal game pricing on 360/PS3.

I think it is kind of unfortunate that while our computers increase in power, we continue to use more and more of that power to do things that took little power before--specifically, flasier interfaces. I will admit that screenshots of Windows Vista and Mac OS X look very nice with window shading and transparency, but in the end I think it is wasted power.

I don't really represent the majority of computer users, however. I would consider myself a minimalist when it comes to the UI. My window manager (Ion3) takes 33 vertical pixels (i.e., a total area of 1280x33 pixels on a 1280x1024 screen).

Good post, denjet78. It is funny how the big companies take the conservative approach and lose billions, while the underdog thinks outside of the box and turns profits from day one. In actuality, the "safe" approach doesn't bring success. Microsoft and Sony are not failing in the sense that they lack marketshare, but financially their video gaming policies are not helping them out.

Tilt-controls make me a little bit nervous. I wouldn't mind an option for using the nunchuck's analog stick, but if their normal controls work all right then I guess that isn't necessary.

Bring on the new IPs!

I haven't heard a good Iwata quote in a long time. Before the Wii launch, it seemed as though every word Iwata, Reggie, or Perrin Kaplan said received massive attention. A simple comment like "We have big plans for the Wii" (fake example) could turn into speculation about Nintendo's online gaming structure.

I'm always glad to see Nintendo speak with modesty and caution about their successes. One could argue that it is just marketing to please fans like us, but there is no doubt Nintendo is succeeding. Iwata is doing something right.

This is the kind of thing that would be perfect as a Sudoku replacement in a Brain Age sequel. As a standalone game, it can't be sold at full price. Budget pricing is a must for a title such as this.

I will say this.  On this board I think I'm the minority of regulars who doesn't own at least a 360 as well as a Wii.  I like to get my hands on one but I can't sink the money in it in its current hardware state.

I also do not have an Xbox 360. Once I get a job, probably this Summer, I might eventually buy one, but for now I can't justify the purchase. Even if I had the money, I haven't found enough games that really excite me. Maybe I have just been sheltered by Nintendo this whole time, but I just don't get worked up about games on other systems. Some of that is probably due to the fact that I follow Nintendo news far more than I follow Microsoft/Sony news. Plus whenever I visit the PS3/360 sections of sites like IGN, the games seem predominantly sports and FPS, which don't interest me a bit.

I caught part of AFHV today when I got home and it was awful. Bob Saget was 10 times better at Full House than on that show. Don't get me wrong, Full House was really cheesy, but his work on AFHV was awful. You can tell how much he hated his job. He never laughed at any of crappy jokes, he never smiled, and the small talk he made with the winners lacked any soul.

At least they payed him well (probably).

Are you kidding?! America's Funniest Home Videos was a riot during the Saget era! I just loved those clever voices. Bob Saget didn't talk over the clips, he spoke through them.
