TalkBack / RE:Revolution Name Announced!
« on: April 27, 2006, 11:42:50 AM »
I can't even begin to explain how disappointed I am in the final name selection for what was formerly the Nintendo Revolution.

Wii?

Seriously, explain all the rationale behind the choice all you want, but that name is just a terrible, terrible fit for the American market. I can only assume that the name was picked by NCL and that NOA had nothing to do with it.

I'm absolutely stunned, shocked, and dumbfounded.

Official prediction: Gamers everywhere will go back to saying "I'm playing Nintendo." In that light, maybe this is a good move. But only in that light. In every other light, this is bowling-shoe ugly.

I would imagine that you will only be able to contact other Nintendo DS units running DSpeak.

Disappointingly, Metroid Dread was a no-show.

TalkBack / Nintendo shows off "DSpeak" at E3
« on: May 18, 2005, 01:47:57 PM »
First info on Nintendo's take on the Voice-Over-IP phenomenon.

There isn't a lot to say about DSpeak just yet, as it is a very limited demo here at E3 2005.  DSpeak will work over the Internet using WiFi (which is how it was set up at the show), and you will be able to get alerts when you friends come online, similar to an instant messenger program.

Nintendo has tiny earpieces with microphones attached, which clip onto your ear, similar to what you might find packaged with a cell phone.  Voice quality was difficult to ascertain, due to the incredibly loud convention center, but for the most part, the demo was working as shown.

The most interesting part was that a Nintendo character (in this demo, Mario and Wario) was shown on the upper screen, and his lips are synchronized to the speech coming from the person on the other end of the conversation.  In a way, you can "see" the person you're talking to.

No word yet on whether or not Nintendo will be releasing "DSpeak", but we'll keep you posted.

It's wicked fun.  Jonny kept kicking my ass at it ("LUIGI LOSE"), but it was a lot of fun, and if you want to make it competitive, there are plenty of ways to screw each other.

It's just standard MPEG2.  There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to view it.

I think that it's far more likely that IGN registered the domain on the off-chance that's what Nintendo would be calling the console.  It's not, of course.

More BitTorrenty goodness, direct from E3!

And in this corner, weighing in at about 30MB, direct-feed, high-res footage of Metroid Prime Hunters.  Please read our BitTorrent guide if you haven't already, then start downloading.

Metroid Prime Hunters (30MB, MPEG 2)

Please remember to keep seeding the file and help spread it to others!

FWIW, Gamasutra is reporting that the machine will play DVDs (assumedly movies), as well as the GameCube 8cm discs, and Revolution 12cm discs.  Again, in the industry "play DVDs" always refers to movies.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolution Logos?
« on: May 15, 2005, 07:57:06 AM »
You know, I'm hearing the same arguments all over for why these HAVE to be fake.  Let me clue you in.  I own my own buisness doing graphic design, including logos.  Just because it could be done in Photoshop, doesn't make it fake.  Obscure fonts and Photoshop are my primary tools, and it's the same across the industry.  As for Revolution being "just" the codename, everyone is calling it Revolution, and it's because Nintendo was calling it Revolution.  I have little doubt this is the final name.  Are the logos real?  I'm not sure, but there is nothing in that scan that suggests to me that it's not legit (and a few things that corroborate it).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo Advertising Zelda HARD at E3

No, what happened is not only did he post the screen without permission, and without giving credit, he was stealing the bandwidth as well, and got caught when the guy changed the source images.

Just plain bush-league for someone of his caliber.

Think about it, people.  Part of what makes a piece of electronics big is because of the ports you put on it.  Standard ports need to be a standard size, the best electronics (and smallest) are the ones that find a way to work without needing extra ports. The reason the GBA SP omitted the headphone jack was to shave off a few millimeters.

Without needing controller ports, ethernet ports, memory card ports (perhaps), including slot-loading DVD instead of a tray ... suddenly, you can make a very small machine.

Nintendo's Director of Public Relations says that this is the smallest console they've ever made.

We have pictures of the other hall's stairs too, but it's just a big Zelda logo, telling them where they can play it.

"What if they had a wireless multitap 'wave-tap' that you plug conrollers into and the multi-tap just pretends each contoller is a wave-bird, and communicates with the system.
The system sounds way too small to have 4 contoller ports anywhere on it, I like this idea alot better."

Sigh ... the Revolution controllers will be backwards compatible as well.  You'll use them to play GameCube games.  No controller ports are necessary.

As for the memory cards, they might keep the same format, and just move up to larger sizes (like the PS2 did), or they might go with a completely new format, or you'll store them on internal storage.  So you might have to start your games over (unless you have a USB card reader), but the games themselves will be compatible, as promised.

Wait, did I say something about internal storage?  Scratch that.

TalkBack / Revolution to be shown at E3?
« on: May 14, 2005, 05:55:54 AM »
Nintendo's head of Public Relations seems to think so.

In an interview with the Dallas Morning News (registration required, sorry), Anna Dolecki, Nintendo's Director of Public Relations, said that, "Showing Revolution this year will be very important to us in terms of making sure that our audience knows that Revolution is real."

She goes on to reiterate the other information that we've known, using three DVD cases again as the point of reference, as well as the ability for Revolution to be housed either horizontally or vertically.

This is the first word from anyone inside Nintendo that Revolution will be shown this year, but there is a small possibility that the quote was taken out of context, and that while Nintendo will show Revolution this year, it won't be at E3, but at another event.  However, The Dallas Morning News did state in its story that "Nintendo won't reveal details of the Revolution's technical innards until E3", the first glimpse of hope that we'll not only see Nintendo's new "sleek" console, but we'll find out what's powering the machine as well.
