NWR Feedback / How do we change passwords?
« on: February 03, 2003, 11:37:54 AM »
Yep, that's EXACTLY what you do.

I'm going to tweak the e-mail it sends out to make that more clear, since I've been asked this a few times now.  Thanks!

General Chat / General Chat Guidelines
« on: February 03, 2003, 10:52:44 AM »
You're pretty much open to discussing anything you want in General Chat, but due to the firestorm it tends to create, there are still a few topics that are completely off-limits.  Any threads discussing these topics will be deleted, and any threads that degenerate into a discussion of these topics will be locked.  Anyone that REPEATEDLY starts or engages in a conversation discussing these topics will be banned.  This is your warning, there will not be another.

The off-limit topics are:

* Religion
* Politics
* Nationality
* Sexual Orientation
* Mothers

I will also point out that these rules are no different than the rules of the Forum itself, and this is simply a reminder.  Any questions?  I didn't think so.  Carry on.

Nintendo Gaming / Too Human Hype Thread!!!!!!!
« on: February 03, 2003, 09:33:53 AM »
I wouldn't presume to speak for Denis, but from what I understand of Silicon Knights and the way they approach projects, they will start with an idea or story and nurture it until they find the right way to deliver the story.  Just because a game was almost done and then moved to another platform doesn't mean that we'll never see the game.  They just want to make sure they get it right, and that means getting it on the right platform as well as all the other details.

I'm sure Too Human is coming.  It might even be their next project.  But I wouldn't be surprised to see something else pop up out of nowhere either.

Frozen,

Actually WE (as in PGC) didn't pay for the forums.  I personally did, and I paid for it quite a long time ago.  I've been helping the FuseTalk guys build this product (through testing and making suggestions) for the longest time.  It started as a project for AnandTech (the hardware enthusiast site), and they got such great response, they started their own company building ColdFusion software.  I've had a license for FuseTalk since 1999, and have been buying upgrades ever since.

But yes, the main reason why we're using it is that PGC is built in ColdFusion, and having a ColdFusion forum system allows us a lot of leeway.  Having the source code for the Forums helps a lot too.  There is so much cool stuff that we're going to be able to do, you'll hardly beleive it when we start unleashing it on you guys.  In fact, it's going to make you guys wonder why you were griping about avatars and titles so much.

And that's about as much hinting about it as you're going to get from me.

Are you frickin' kidding me?  I should ban you until you get a frickin' clue.  It was an ACCIDENT.  There was no French satellite that interfered with the instruments.  Don't beleive everything you read on the internet.  While they can't state positively that it was the cause, the leading theory right now is that during launch, the piece of foam that broke off and hit the left wing and damaged a piece of heat shielding.  Not a big deal during a launch, but on re-entry, the velocity and heat broke off more pieces of shielding, and the shuttlee just broke up.  It has absolutely nothing to do with any French satellite, because the shuttle was already in our atmosphere.

As for why this is so "important", the main thing is that being an astronaut is a dream of many kids.  I remember how scared I was when I was a kid and saw the Challenger explode, and the MAIN reason why we posted the news was to show our respect, and to give people a place to talk about it.  Respectfully.

And quite frankly, for someone who doesn't think that this is at all important enough to warrant all this attention, you're doing a pretty good job of keeping this thread bumped to the top.

NWR Feedback / PGCs Effect on Nintendo's Userbase.
« on: February 02, 2003, 07:17:01 PM »
Well, we've already had to ban one troublemaker, but other than that, I'd say this Forum is off to a great start.  Problem is, as the userbase increases, so does the signal to noise ratio.  Not much we can do about that.

As for our effect, I'm sure we're all flattered that you think so.  I'd like to think that Nintendo is starting to take notice as well, but sometimes it's very hard to get any sort of feedback from them.  Knowing that you guys enjoy what we do, and taking pride in our work is often enough for us.  But I'd be lying if I said that we didn't strive for more.

No one is asking you to mourn.  One is asking you to show some damned respect, though, which you can best do by keeping insensitive comments like those to yourself.  If you don't think it deserves the attention, fine.  The last thing others want to hear when they are trying to show their respects is some insensitive jerk saying "What's the big deal?"

As Mark Twain once said, "Sometimes it's better to remain quiet and be thought a fool, than to speak, and remove all doubt."

Posting it because you want to keep your readers informed is a nice gesture, really it is ...

Right.  And that's where you should have left it.  This is the problem with the internet ... some people just can't leave an opinion, however malformed, unspoken.

Piglet and friends heading to the GameCube.

Take-Two Interactive Software's Gotham Games Expands Into Children's Video Game Market With Piglet's Big Game

Gotham Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) announced today that it has signed an agreement with Disney Interactive to publish Piglet's BIG Game. The agreement with Disney Interactive will bring some of Disney's most beloved characters, including Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and Tigger, onto the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and Nintendo GameCube this Spring.

"Gotham Games will strategically enter the children's video game market with a company that is recognized as the global leader in family entertainment," said Jamie Leece, president of Gotham Games. "With the increasing household penetration rates of video game consoles, we believe that children will become more active gamers."

Piglet's BIG Game is currently scheduled to be available for the March 21st big screen debut of Walt Disney Pictures' Piglet's BIG Movie. Piglet's BIG Game puts gamers in the role of Piglet as they maneuver their way through seven exciting adventures. Piglet may be very small, but he puts on a "brave" face as he sets out to rescue his friends by turning their bad dreams into good ones. When Pooh, Tigger, Roo, Rabbit, Owl, and Eeyore begin having dreams in which they lose their precious treasures, it is up to Piglet to save the day and find the missing items. This is no easy task for little Piglet, as he must not only solve many puzzles, but he must also be brave enough to chase away all of the Heffalumps and Woozles that he encounters.

That's actually one of the few changes I made on purpose ... just because there isn't really any other link back to PGC in the Forums, except for at the bottom in the copyright message.  While we want you to hang out here and enjoy the forums, we want you going to PGC as well!

I agree that it's a tragedy, but not something that needs to be posted on your website. This isn't 9/11. Seven people died doing a job they knew was risky from the get-go. That's something I don't mourn over. I don't see PGC doing traffic accident reports and the like, so why should this be any different? They're not heros, they're astronauts who had an unfortunate accident.

That's a very shallow and sad view of the world, Mojo.  I consider everyone that risks their life to travel into outer space to gather even the simplest of scientific information a hero.  PGC is a site with a social conscience, and while we're not going to lament every national tragedy on our home page, there are certain ones that we're going to bring attention to.  If you don't like it, DON'T READ IT.  No one forced you to click that link.  You have no one to blame but yourself.

Yes, this wasn't on the scope of something like the attack on the WTC, and we're likely not going to take every February 1st off either.  But I'll be damned if we're going to keep from keeping our readers informed on important events just because someone doesn't think it "belongs" on our site.  If you want to dictate what does on a website, start your own.

Nintendo has this crazy idea that Pokemon will sell well...or something.  If you pre-order you GET BONUS.

America Braces for Next Installment of Pokemon Mania

Nintendo Readies Pre-sell Campaign for Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire for Game Boy Advance

REDMOND, Wash.--Feb. 11, 2003--Within the first six weeks of launching the new Game Boy(R) Advance titles Pokemon(R) Ruby Version and Pokemon(R) Sapphire Version in Japan, Nintendo sold through nearly 4 million copies combined.

Now, North America prepares for the sales onslaught as the official pre-sell program for both games gets underway this week at participating retailers.

With both video games hitting store shelves in North America on March 17, Nintendo anticipates brisk sales to continue, especially with the exclusive pre-sell incentive. While supplies last, those who pre-order Pokemon Ruby or Pokemon Sapphire also will receive a limited-edition, holographic Pokemon collector's coin.

"The phenomenal sales of Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire in Japan illustrate the continuing popularity of the Pokemon franchise," says George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America Inc. "After five years, kids are watching the Pokemon cartoon in record numbers, buying the video games and collecting Pokemon Trading Cards -- and we have every reason to believe these two Pokemon games will be as huge in North America as they are in Japan."

In Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, the quest to become a Pokemon Master continues, as players discover more than 100 new Pokemon characters, as well as many returning favorites. Players can play as either a boy or girl trainer, and for the first time ever, players can strategically battle with two Pokemon simultaneously.

"We are anxiously awaiting the launch of Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire in the U.S. because these games will usher in a new phase for the Pokemon brand," says Akira Chiba, president of Pokemon USA, Inc. "Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire will be the starting point for a whole new Pokemon world in regard to the trading card game, merchandise, the animated TV series and theatrical releases."

The Game Boy Advance dramatically improves the visuals of previous Game Boy titles such as Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue and most recently, Pokemon Crystal, as the colors are more vibrant and the graphics are more detailed. Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire are the first two Pokemon titles designed for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and will be available for a suggested retail price of $39.95 each. Game Boy Advance is available for a suggested retail price of $79.95, while the newest addition to the Game Boy family, the Game Boy(R) Advance SP, will be available March 23 for an estimated retail price of $99.95. Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire are published by The Pokemon Company and distributed exclusively by Nintendo of America.

Pokemon USA, Inc., the New York-based subsidiary of The Pokemon Company in Japan, manages and oversees the Pokemon franchise in North and Latin America, which includes licensing, merchandising, TV animation, theatrical releases, home video entertainment, the official Pokemon website, the Pokemon Center NY in Rockefeller Center and PokemonCenter.com, a retail site.     Pokemon first launched for the world's best-selling Game Boy(R) video game system in Japan in 1996 and has since evolved into a global cultural phenomenon. Since bringing the franchise to North America in September 1998, Nintendo has sold more than 110 million Pokemon games worldwide. Pokemon merchandise has generated over $15 billion in worldwide retail sales since 1998. The trading card game, fueled by organized play programs with over 250,000 members in 47 countries, has spurred global sales of 9.8 billion cards to date. Uh... why not YaBB or UBB somthing good. I even like EZBoard over this one. The interface of this one is just too bland and boring. It didnt have the same feeling that the EZBoard forum had. I dont think that people will move from EZBoard to this bland stuff. Also, is there a way to import old topics on to this board. I really enjoyed reading them.

PS: Ive pulled better looking emoticons out of my ass, atleast change THOSE

No one is forcing you to use it, so if you dislike it that much, feel free to leave.  We're not using YaBB or UBB, because FuseTalk integrates VERY tightly with the website.  The forums are in BETA, and we will be updating the graphics a bit.  However, it's going to stay fairly "bland" in order to keep the speed up where it needs to be.  That's the trade-off you're making for not having 12 pop-ups launch in your face every time you click a link.

We're trying to give you guys what you've asked for while trying to keep it from crippling the site.  But we're not going to try to please everyone.  That would be impossible anyway.

Yes, but this Forum requires a unique e-mail address for each user.  So someone who's really determined to cause problems still could, but they would have to sign up for a new e-mail address, spoof their IP, register all over again, and get their password before they can cause trouble.  It's a decent deterrent.  And we also have ... other ways.

Unfortunately, it's nigh impossible for us to bring that ban list over here, so everyone effectively gets a second chance.  However, now we have additional tools to make bans even more permanent, so if they screw up this time ... it might as well mean the gallows.

Last year, I got to play so few games, it was almost CRIMINAL.  I was very busy running around getting footage, getting to appointments, herding the cats ...

Still, there's nothing like it.  It's quite a spectacle.  Seeing early versions of games can be a double-edged sword though, especially when you see something that is so early, it really shouldn't have been there.  I'm having a very hard time getting the negative first impression of Wario World out of my head.

Guys, the only difference between a typical laptop screen and that in the GBA is that the GBA screen has a SCREEN PROTECTOR covering it.  Considering the rough use most GBAs go through, this is a Good Thing.

If we ever did turn on avatars, in your "Customize" settings, there will be an option to choose the "Standard" Graphics Mode, which I beleive will turn them off anyway.

It's more of an issue of the additional bandwidth load than anything.

Pictures in signatures will NOT happen.  It's a bitch to moderate, and is just entirely unnecessary.  Avatars will probably NOT happen until we can have them hosted off-site somehow, which the software can't do.  Yet.  We may make an exception later on, but I wouldn't count on it if I were you.
