NWR Feedback / Could we get a "Buy/Sell/Trade" board?
« on: February 07, 2003, 09:46:31 AM »
The main reason we don't allow that sort of thing is that we don't want the forum to become flooded with that sort of thing.  Yes, we could set aside an area for it, but we don't want to have to deal with any complaints from people who may get "taken" from someone on this board.  It becomes impossible to manage, we'd have to check each and every link just to make sure that nothing inappropriate was being linked to.  It's just a big hassle.

But most importantly, this is a DISCUSSION board.  There are tons of places you can go to sell things.

Nintendo Gaming / GameCube's Appeal to the Teen Audience
« on: February 06, 2003, 06:11:53 PM »
That's the entire problem in a nutshell, BlkPaladin.  Nintendo's marketing is best described as "scattershot".  They have a very strange idea of the places it's appropriate to market certain games.  It's almost like marketing has a bullet list or something.

Mature Games: Playboy, Maxim.  Never on TV ... kids might see it!
Cinematic or Epic games: Movie Theaters.
Teen Games: Television, Movie Theaters.
Rated E: Television and Magazines.

Nintendo would be well served to not be so concerned with whether or not they are "marketing towards kids" if they put an ad for a mature game on TV, and in Prime Time.  In fact, they should probably counter any effect that might have by launching a full scale campaign to educate parents on the ratings system and by offering incentives to retailers that refuse to sell mature rated games to kids.

General Gaming / Nokia's new handheld a gba killer
« on: February 06, 2003, 06:05:10 PM »
The GameBoy's market is safe.  The only way Nokia is going to get a foothold is if they can get it priced UNDER the Game Boy, and I don't see that happening in it's lifetime.  Plus, there is so much software for the GBA that Nokia will never catch up, Sega or no.

Then there's the fact that the screen is tiny, far to tiny to game on comfortably.  It also seems like there have been some significant compromises in their typical phones to make the device, namely the thicker size, awkward layout, etc.

And the battery life SUCKS.

Seriously, while this might appeal to people who game on their phones anyway, aren't interested in carrying two devices, and can afford the steep price ... none of those people are in Nintendo's core market.

NWR Feedback / How is the new server holding up?
« on: February 06, 2003, 05:59:20 PM »
Slashdot.org is a website/discussion forum about all sorts of high-tech related subjects, and frequently includes gaming stories.  They have a largely very intelligent userbase, as well as an absolutely insane number of daily visitors.  Because of this, a phenomenon known as "The Slashdot Effect" can occur when a story is posted on their site.  The website that is linked in one of their stories can get thousands of hits almost instantly, and only grows the longer the story is up, sometimes into the millions.  This causes a lot of webservers to crash under the crushing load.  Sites call this "getting Slashdotted".

We've been linked to several times on Slashdot, and we've been fortunate to never have our server crash as a result.  We might slow down, but we've never crashed.  *crosses fingers*

NWR Feedback / The "Stealing from Other Sites Rule"
« on: February 06, 2003, 05:55:00 PM »
Re-read the rule, Matt.  Cutting and Pasting is PLAGARISM.  It doesn't matter if you source them or not, you STOLE their words.  All the major websites re-write the story, even if they source them.  And as the rule very clearly states, it's VISITING that site that gives them ad revenue, and when you take their work in its entirety and post it elsewhere, even if you source them, they get NO MONEY.  Plus, if the site is copyrighted (as Planet GameCube is), then it's also against the law.

There are websites out there that cut and paste news onto their own sites, and then "source" the site they stole it from.  There are many sites that do this to us, and we are very aggressive about having them remove our content.  Paraphrase what they wrote, link to them, but don't just take what they wrote.

NWR Feedback / When will this forum be "Official"?
« on: February 06, 2003, 05:18:36 PM »
The Forums will come out of Beta "Real Soon Now."  When the Forums are out of Beta, that's when we'll change the link on the menu over (and shut down the ezBoard Forums as well).

There are no pop-ups anymore because the pop-ups on ezBoard weren't coming from us.  ezBoard was sending those.  We do have ads on this Forum, and we're not going to rule pop-ups out entirely.  I will guaran-damn-tee you that they will NEVER be as bad as they were on ezBoard, though (with pop-ups spawning pop-ups).

Yes, we're hosting this board on our own server now, but I'm afraid the details aren't for public consumption.  Let's just say that we whole-heartedly thank each and every one of you who have supported PGC, in every way that you have.  This is that "Thank You".

By now most of you will have noticed that the Emoticons/Rating Icons got a bit of an overhaul.  In addition, there are BRAND NEW emoticons you can use.  When you start or reply to a thread, click the "symbols" link at the bottom to see all the new ones available to you.  And of course, they're available on your drop-down emoticon list.

This is just the start of the neat new things we have planned.  Stay tuned.

Don't worry about it if you bought the game for Xbox.  You're playing it NOW, and you will have some downloadables that the other consoles won't.  It's a good game all around, so just be happy you got to play it first.

It is good to see that UbiSoft is going all out and giving each console some nifty extras.

Not even a hiccup.  But tonight's not the real test, that'll be tomorrow when the Slashdotter's wake up and we REALLY get hammered.

We've never been taken down by a Slashdotting to my knowledge (this isn't our first, not by a long shot), and the last one was only a week and a half ago or so (right before we moved).  We lived through that one, and this should be no different.

Announcements / Why do you keep locking my thread? About Polls.
« on: February 04, 2003, 06:49:18 PM »
Q:  Why do you keep locking my thread?

A:  Probably because the question you're asking is a poll.  Anytime you ask random people to give you the title of a game, based on some criteria, with little background information ... it's a poll.  This means that asking "What game should I buy?" or "What's a good *genre* game?" is a poll, and WILL be locked.

Q:  So how the hell am I supposed to know what game to buy???

A:  Here's my suggestion, and it works very well for me. Make a list of the games YOU already enjoy. Check out some reviewers online, and see what games they've reviewed highly. Find a reviewer who's reviews most closely parallel your own, and use them as your barometer for what to buy.  If all of that fails, go rent the ones that look interesting to you.  Only YOU know what games YOU are going to enjoy.  (On a side note, learn to be an independent thinker.  It's great that you want to make a good purchasing decision and are looking for infomation, but a random sampling is not the best way to get it.  There are a lot of websites on the internet devoted to giving you the information you're looking for.  Use them to help, but you've got to go with your own gut.  If all else fails, you have to try the game to be sure!)

Q:  But I REALLY want to know everyone else's opinion!

A:  Then find a more constructive way to ask your question, and put some THOUGHT into it.  Start a conversation, talk about games you enjoy, what qualities you think comprise a good game, feelings that these games give you.  LEAVE IT AT THAT.  Don't ask for other people's opinions.

Q:  Don't ask for their opinion?  Then how am I going to get them?

A:  Because when you post a new thread in a forum, the fact that you're starting a conversation and inviting other people's opinions is IMPLIED.  There is nothing more redundant than asking for someone opinion on a message board designed to ask that question for you.  The fact that you've posted it asks the question "What do you think?" for you.

Q:  Thanks for setting me straight, Rick!

A:  No problem, now get in there start a thoughtful conversation!

Nintendo Gaming / Rumored Online Games... so far..
« on: February 04, 2003, 03:22:05 PM »
You've never played MechAssault online, then.  There's actually a lot to be said for not having to sit in front of your computer and your(relatively) small screen, when you can be in the living room with your (again, relatively) big screen, and kicking your friend's ass ... and all without having to worry about drivers, memory, whether your computer can run the game, etc.

Xbox Live takes it one step further.  You should hear some of the obscenities I was lobbing at Billy the other night.

EXCELLENT POST.  So close to a poll, but not.  This is a very good example of how to get information like this and keep it constructive.  Nicely done.

Game: Metroid Prime
System: Nintendo GameCube
Release: 2002

Metroid Prime is the rookie effort of Retro Studios (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nintendo), and a perfect example of how to take a two-dimensional game and bring it into a 3D universe.  The gameplay is entirely new and different, but retains much of the same feel as the rest of the games in the series.  The music does an outstanding job of establishing mood, and the game delivers tension in spades.  More than anything, there is a focus on minutia in Prime that has never been seen before.  Metroid Prime was every Nintendo site's candidate for Game of the Year for 2002, and with good reason.  The game is a testament to good development technique and incredible attention to art detail.

It's just that other people were mentioning it, and I wanted to know if they were a very small minority or not.

You can do math, right?  Count the number of posts where people use the words "Mojo" and "banned", and subtract that from the number of registered users.

Essentially, I'm complaining about people complaining, so in essence maybe I'M a hypocrite as well, but that still doesn't revoke my right to express MY opinion on the way many others express THEIR opinions.

Except that then all the responses to your thread are people either going "yeah, cut it out" or "shut up and quit telling people what to do".  When you get to the point of complaining about complaining, it's only going to beget more complaining.  This post being a perfect example.  It's a spiral to hell, and while I certainly understand your wanting to ride it to the bottom, I'll be damned if I'm going to let it.  I've got enough experience with internet forums, and the PGC Forums in particular to KNOW what's going to happened based on our userbase.  You seem to forget that a very large part of this userbase are made up of people who haven't fully matured yet, but are on the cusp just enough to feel like they know what they're talking about (as is evidenced by all of the teens who have yet to take a single business class in college, but seem to know all about market economics).  So rather than trying to change their points of view (which you can't, because they really aren't open-minded enough), all you can do is correct any factual mistakes and let it go.  And if their gripes have a factual basis?

Fact is, MOST of those gripes DO have a factual basis ... most of the people here are Nintendo fans because either a) It's the console they grew up on and have fond memories of, b) They appreciate Nintendo's attention to gameplay and quality, or c) Both a and b.  The problem is, for the most part, these people are NO LONGER IN NINTENDO'S TARGET MARKET.  And now they wonder why Nintendo is making all these bad decisions, and why Nintendo has "forsaken" them.  Sorry, you grew up, and now Sony and Microsoft want your business.  Honestly, all these angry teens can do is wait a few more years until they have families and are in Nintendo's target market again, or buy an Xbox/PS2.  They're worrying because they feel this is something Nintendo has done to THEM, and your post was absolutely NOT going to change it.

And that is the answer to the question you asked in the first few lines of your post.  You weren't going to get that answer from anyone in this forum, because they're all in the same boat, which left your post "complaining" at the wind.  These posts with people worrying about what's wrong with Nintendo, etc. are never going to stop as long as people who grew up on Nintendo keep growing up.

Or at least, they won't stop as long as Cassamassina keeps writing "What's Wrong With Nintendo?" editorials.

I wasn't mocking Volleyball.  I was mocking stupid, worthless developers that take girls from a fighting game (already best known for having bouncy tits as it's BEST feature), and putting them in a crappy volleyball game come dating sim.  Every single person I know that's bought the game said that they regretted almost instantly.  Any allure the game might have had wears off VERY fast.  It's pandering ... not quite as bad as BMX XXX, but I think you get my point.

I mean, when the entire ad campaign focuses on how bouncy the girls are, and shows the boys playing becoming aroused ... how SAD is that?  It wasn't even funny.

Public complaining about messages being moved or deleted is reason to have your account banned.

Let's repeat that. Public complaining about the removal or closure of any message or thread is grounds for expulsion.  In otherwords, bitch to the moderators in PRIVATE, not in public.  It's probably YOUR mistake, not ours.

Private messaging is here for JUST THIS REASON.  I have my PM turned on, and that is the appropriate outlet for your complaints in this regard.  Let's not make that mistake again, m'kay?

The thread was locked because despite what your point MIGHT have been, you did not have your intended effect.  Very few people were getting past your initial sentiment of "Stop Worrying!"  Yes, it was unfortunate that I happened to lock it right as you were going to make a long winded post.  Such is life.

Quite frankly, you're taking the entire matter far too seriously.  The internet exists for people to complain.  You're not going to be able to stop that, no matter how much you might try to convince them otherwise.  So you know what you should do?  Just turn a blind eye and open CONSTRUCTIVE discussions.  If a complaint post is obviously attracting flame bait, we'll squash it.  Otherwise, just let the poor souls have their moment to vent and move on.

I have a little secret for you.  90% of the people claiming that they're no longer going to support Nintendo, etc., etc., ad nausem ... are just making idle threats.  They're just venting.  Telling them not to get worked up over it is akin to poking a bear with a short stick.

Sly Cooper was such a fabulous game, though ... it just didn't have quite the marketing push that Ratchet and Clank did.  Seriously, I literally spent all day last Friday playing the game, starting around 9:30 AM, and didn't realize how much time had passed until I looked up and it was 4:30 PM!  I haven't done that in a LONG time.  Ratchet and Clank wasn't nearly as good, IMO.

It's such a shame that a fantastic game like Sly Cooper is likely going to get just as overlooked in these awards as it is on the shelves.
