As for Live Voice being mandatory, I dont believe it should be because I find it annoyingly monotonous when you get some gamers with irritating quirks and what about other gamers that try to intentionally distract you with Voice tactics in a cheating way.

Personally for me typing text line communication is more appealing especially when the language you type in is 733t.

You can ignore the morons.  But quit frankly, I'd rather have voice than not, now that I've used it.  I'm a fast typer, but it still requires you to effectively STOP PLAYING, while you respond.  Same with on-screen keyboards or voice input ... you have to stop playing to enter a command.  With voice, the gaming never stops.  Plus, there's emotion and nuance that comes across with voice that you just don't get with text.

Nintendo Gaming / AC questions
« on: February 16, 2003, 04:27:31 PM »
Bumping threads is against the rules, Taco.  If you'd been asking your questions in the right place, you'd get better answers.

When/if your store gets upgraded depends on how much buying/selling you do in your store.  Keep selling things and buying items (even if you don't need them), and eventually, the store will close to upgrade.

I think there should be a special category just for people to say anything they want about any console or video game. It might get ugly, but it sure would be fun.

I think not.

Nintendo Gaming / Gameboy Advance SP extra batteries???
« on: February 16, 2003, 02:12:54 PM »
The problem is that the battery access compartment needs to be UNSCREWED in order to access the battery, so dropping in a quick replacement isn't very feasible.  The answer to your particluar problem is to charge the GBA when you aren't using it (you don't want to drain a Lithium Ion battery down to nothing on a regular basis), or get a Car Adapter, which I'm sure will be available shortly after launch.

There is some FMV, but most of it is rendered in-engine.

I definitely agree that that's probably the problem. I have thought of that myself. I think for the most part this game was a quick port that probably didn't have a ton of work put into it. They probably just took the cartridge version and plopped it down onto the disk. At most they probably tweaked the controls for the GC controller but that's probably it. If I'm not mistaken isn't the higher resolution just a result of it running on the GameCube?

I however doubt the game is running on an emulator. If that were the case wouldn't it play and look exactly like the N64 version? I'm taking that from the fact that the Sonic Mega Collection games run on an emulator and therefore looks and plays just like the original games.

The game IS being emulated.  There is basically a "ROM" file from the cartridge on the disc, and the emulator calls it up.  The emulator is what has been tweaked to use the GameCube controls, not the game itself.
Zelda does "play and look" like it's N64 counterpart, with the exception of the few things in the emulator tweaked for the GameCube setup.  Thus, the load times and odd save screens.

Just like the GBA, the Green "Power" LED will turn RED when the battery life falls to a certain level.  And since every battery will be the same, it will likely be more accurate as well.

Nintendo Gaming / game specs ?

is there a way to find out the numbers behind the games?

No.

the reason i ask is because i've heard people say that george lucas once said that roge squadron run on 25 million polygons per second, while it only used half the gcn's power... BUT, if you look at the system specs, it says that it only supports 6-12 million polygons per second.

Those specs are what Nintendo says developers can expect with little to no optimization at all.  It was a low-ball estimate, rather than the pie-in-the-sky numbers Sony and Microsoft publish.  Factor 5 wrote a great many tools to optimize and tweak the inner workings of the GameCube, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see that Rogue Leader was running in excess of 20M polys.

Nintendo's website is wrong.  I just booted up my Cube to check, and watched as the "100TX" light on my switch lit up.  While it's possible that it only communicates at 10Mbit, it's a proper 10/100 part.

I'm sure someone out there is thinking "what does it matter, when an Internet connection is rarely faster than 1.5Mbit anyway?"  Well, a single 10Mbit device on some 100Mbit hubs will force every device on the hub down to 10Mbit, lowering performance across the board.  Even if the adapter can't communicate at a full 100Mbit, telling the hub/switch that it can is important for maintaining performance on the rest of the network.

And of course, the more speed you have for LAN games, the better.  It would be nice if it were a true 100Mbit device, but that was asking for a lot.  10Mbit is still perfectly fine for LAN/Internet games.

TalkBack / Inside the SP
« on: February 15, 2003, 02:39:59 PM »
When they aren't torturing a poor GBA SP by setting it on fire, they're DISMEMBERING IT!  Oh, the humanity!

How on earth did Nintendo cram the Game Boy Advance into this smaller size?  Lik Sang was determined to find out, and find out they did.

There are some nice revelations to be had.  First, the slick little baby-blue Lithium Ion battery is self contained and should be replaceable should it fail.

Second, this thing is SMALL.  OK, so that's not really a "revelation", but what are you going to do?

So what does it look like?  Head on over to Lik Sang and find out.

TalkBack / Game Boy Advance SP "Crash Test"
« on: February 15, 2003, 02:29:51 PM »
If you just spent $150 on an import GBA SP, what would you do?  These jokers SET THEIRS ON FIRE!

Update: Lik Sang has pulled the "crash test", due to the outcry from customer who had yet to recieve their GBA SP units, while Lik Sang was destroying one.  Turns out that the SP that Lik Sang set on fire was already defective, so they decided to have a little fun, and their customers didn't appreciate the joke.  Spoil sports.  Lik Sang has informed us that once all of the SP units they have in stock are shipped out to pre-orders, they will post the "Crash Test" again.

In the meantime, we suggest that you do check out the "Inside the SP" story instead, as there are a lot of wonderful pictures of what the SP looks like NAKED!

Every time a new console or handheld is released, there are jokers on the Internet that want to see how much punishment it can take.  Doesn't look like the Game Boy Advance SP is going to be any different, as the folks at Lik Sang have taken the Game Boy Advance SP to the next level.  That is, if that next level happens to be the raging infernos of HELL.

Needless to say, don't try this at home.  First of all, that's a lot of money.  Second, fire burns ... not just the SP, but probably YOU, too.  Lastly, I'm pretty sure this isn't covered under Nintendo's stellar warranty service.

There are several downloadable videos of these guys torturing the poor GBA SP, and you'll need DiVX to view them.  And may God have mercy on their souls.

Nintendo Gaming / More developers drop the GCN: and so what?

Nintendo have the power with the GBA, they need to extortion companies like konami to make games for GC or there will be no more GBA license for them, but there still a problem because maybe if nintendo does this the companies will start to support the N-gage ...

I can't beleive people are actually suggesting that Nintendo use EXTORTION tactics to get companies to develop for GBA.

Perfect answer, cubist.  Since there's little to be added, I'm locking this down.  Please keep all further Rare discussion to the Other Systems area (or the Game Boy Advance area, when talking about those upcoming games).

General Gaming / Kingdom Hearts: anyone else think this game sucks?
« on: February 15, 2003, 07:10:44 AM »
The camera is the game's main problem.  Unlike others, I really didn't have much problem with any of the puzzles, nor with the platforming.  SOME of the boss fights are easy, and thinking you can just mash the buttons is likely going to get you killed very quickly when you reach the later bosses.

Finish the game.  It won't take you too much longer, and the ending is VERY good.

Not all reality shows are bad.  I love "Survivor", I love "The Mole", and I love "The Amazing Race".

STUPID reality shows are bad.  While all these stupid marriage shows are pretty lame, nothing is going to top the brain trusts at ABC, who took a stupid fad website and turned it into a TV show.

Yeah, that right. "AreYouHotOrNot.com" is now a TV show called "Are You Hot", where stars like Lorenzo Lamas judge if people are ... wait for it ... HOT.

Nothing is ever going to beat that stupidity.  I hope someone, or several someones, get fired over that one.

If you are registered using a free e-mail host and are subscribing to several popular threads, you should HIGHLY consider having the subscription notices sent to your Private Message box on the Forum, rather than your e-mail address.  While this does require you to turn on your Private Messages box, you can easily ignore anyone sending you unsolicited message with the Ignore feature.

We're getting several bounce-back messages that people have reached their mailbox limit, and it's only going to get worse as the traffic here increases.  It's easier on your e-mail, and easier on our e-mail server.

Thanks for your consideration!

That's very hard to say.  It depends on how much data has to be sent for each player, and how fast the connections are between the people.  There isn't any reason on a LAN setup that you couldn't have more than eight, but I think over 20 is pushing it, I'm sure.  I wouldn't expect that you could have more than about eight people in an Internet game, the lag would just be too much.
