TalkBack / RE: Nintendo GameCube Nearly Sold Out!
« on: March 01, 2004, 03:43:42 PM »
It isn't just building demand.  That is suicide when you have two other major competitors.  Especially with todays casual gamer who barely knows the difference between consoles.  Nintendo was making too many GCNs and not moving any so they had no space for them AND they were putting all their money into non-liquid form.  Bad move for any business.  So they stopped production.  It sounds like Nintendo was planning a price drop since Summer but they probably wanted to play that trump card right around the holidays.  They thought they probably thought they were just going to clear out their warehouses but underestimated the power of Black Friday (US) and the whining child.

The battle system was essentially the sameas OoT's just faster but yes parrying did make it too easy.  If you timed your A right you could have just chucked your shield into the sea.  Still I really liked parrying but wouldn't blink an eye if Nintendo removed it in favor of a more realistic look and battle system.

I completely agree with kusanagi.  Midway shouldn't even bother to port a lot of their games to GCN because of N-fans are in the know and decide way ahead of time what they are getting and what they aren't.  Midway stuff just doesn't make the final cut.  Still Mortal Kombat really should be the exception, the title use to be a blockbuster and is probably one of the most recognizable franchises in video games.  Especially with its recent improvement, I bet more N-fans would have bought this MK.  Midway, seal the deal by getting the rights to Ganondorf for Deception.

Honestly I think the "I nerds" shirt is completely selfish.  It is a conspiracy to lure unsuspecting nerds to ask the owner of the shirt out so that the owner can coldly reject him in front of her friends or other "popular' people and feel better about herself.  Well at least she won't resort to bolemia or anorexia.   to the "I nerds" shirt.

girlfriends require money to keep them happy, therefore women = $$$
$$$ is the root of all evil.  Therefore women are the root of all evil by identity. (A friend of mine did the proof better but I can't remember it all)

Hmm...I dunno man, it seems like it would make more of an RPG if you ask me.

Yeah, my ideas could be converted to an RPG easily.  But the way I'm picturing them is in a way you could use them with the current battle system.
Link shoving his sword in the ground is reminescient of Din's Fire from OoT, so that could work no problem.  The variation when he stabs his sword in the ground, could be like taking pot-shots at an enemy from a long distance or even better linked into a combo.  I loved the speed and battle system in WW, and I picture Link jabbing his sword at the ground, the enemy getting hit and popping into the air and Link following up with a horizontal or vertical slash, or even another ground jab.  All in like 3 seconds.  That is pretty true to Zelda.
The arrows idea is upon further inspection much more RPGesque, but I still think it could work and would be cool.  My only issue with the idea is that there are not enough enemies just running around to use it on and it would probably be too easy to kill enemies.  But that could be answered by having hordes of enemies everywhere and making sure that it each move takes a huge chunk of your magic bar.
The magic charge on a beast I stand-by (just like carrots but you do damage. )  And Nintendo has been using the long distance slash (when your health is full forever) and they even resurrected the idea in MM.

I was never arguing whether Ganon was evil or not but the comment about him being a tolken bad guy is what I was saying earlier.  Ganon, pre-WW, was just the villain with almost no personality.  A game about him could expand his story and let us see behind his madness.

Yeah, I've liked Luigi more ever since Super Mario Bros. 2 (on NES) and the fact that he never appears in any 3D adventure games just makes me want him more.  I was really happy about his role in Mario & Luigi because I was livid when they showed him in Paper Mario.
"Dear diary, I ate a mushroom today.  Do you think Mario will notice."
No one is that pathetic!

Yeah actually, I noticed that some of my magic ideas would make some weapons not as useful.
Hey Gannondorf has no known weapons so his magic could be his items.
(Refuses to drop Gannondorf idea and prepares to take it to the grave)

So SK recently leader of SK, Denis Dyack, mentioned that he wouldn't mind making a Zelda game.  What has me most excited about this possibility is that he might do something more with the magic system in Zelda.  Eternal Darkness's magic system is probably my favorite in an adventure game and I think the Zelda series could benefit.  I love the sword spin but there are tons of other things Link (or Ganondorf ) could do.  There is no need for summoning circles or anything, but if his Zelda incarnation has a collecta-thon portion, each piece acquired could go to unlocking a technique.

Here are some of my ideas:
Link shoves his sword into the ground sending a shockwave that could stun or defeat enemies.
- Link could also use a variation of this move: while targeting an enemy push sword into ground and it would 'teleport' and hit the enemy from underneath.
Link could shoot one arrow that splits into several that rain from the air.
Variation:  With even more magic, can add fire or ice spread.
If Nintendo brings back an animal to ride on: a magical charge to charge through enemies.
Nintendo's idea that they should bring back: Long distance slash- I don't care if I have to wait until the last boss again but it needs to be in the next game.

Is Deception planning on having a huge online factor or something?  That's the impression I got from reading the petition.  I think Midway is giving Nintendo the short end of the stick because Deadly Alliance just sold poorly on GCN (about half Xbox and like a quarter of PS2).  Still I think 200,000 units is pretty respectable and probably worth the effort of porting it, if Midway only makes a limited number of Gamecube versions.
I have played MK since the beginning and it is sad to see it go (for me anyways) especially when it finally made a significant improvement after years of the same stagnant gameplay over and over.

My issue was with the fact that Zoras evolved at all.   A water dwelling people, suddenly evolving into a flying people when the world flooded?  It just doesn't logically follow.  Zoras were already adapted for a flood.  If the Gorons had evolved into a people with lighter bones and that could fly that would make much more sense.  But at times like this, we all should suspend our disbelief .

While each Link is technically different, you can view them all as embodying the same spirit. Hence the striking similarity in appearance.

Even if you trust that if people were reincarnated they'd look similar to their previous self,  the fact that the Hylian race remained the same where other races, Zoras (more suitable for a water environment) and Kokiris, evolved, is kind of crazy.  Also in other games that deal with reincarnation, (Crono Cross comes to mind) *begins walking on eggshells, after mentioning a Square game post FFVII*  Crono and Serge look similar enough to know they are of the same spirit but look different enough.  I do get what you are saying though and do understand it myself, but as Miyamoto and crew continue to spin the story, it seems more and more evident that the story was added after the fact, creating loopholes of DBZ proportions .  Whatever... gameplay matters most.  Still with all the loopholes, cinematic SK might have a tough time creating a matching story for their (potential) game.

Actually I mentioned race because in Eternal Darkness, a bunch of diverse people were used to tell the story.  I liked the way it came out and Silicon Knights developped it.  But I was mostly joking above.  Still I can't really respect the idea that all Links are different yet they all look the same.  I don't know to me it's nonsensical, especially with a lot of other different species living in Hyrule.  It would be cool (if Eternal Darkness didn't already cover it) if you could be a Link in different times in a game (like you could be controlling the Link that failed to return in the beginning of WW, then after that's over control another one).
I wouldn't give a flying ______ what color Link was if it was the same Link the whole time.
Yeah Rich, I get what you're saying about being able to recognize the franchise.

Dang, Ian, that is a really good point.  I never even noticed that Hylians were white.  And I guess the prophecies could take care of the no Goron or Zora heroes.  At least we had the masks in MM .

Well, why doesn't that happen with vendors selling "mature" games to minors?

Well, first of all the way the public (America anyway) sees pornography and video games is just completely different.  Everyone beleives that pornography is more immediately damaging to a child than a game however true that may be.  Also it is a federal and established law that no one under age 18 can buy pornography.  Video games only recently having the graphical capabilities to traumatize with gore and sex, have been mostly seen as games and have been sold without a second thought.
The reason the Supreme Court turned the restriction on Manhunt and GTA down was because it is actually a state government's job to do that- that is why you see such laws in California.  Checks and balances of US govt.  As for why vendors aren't punished is that either the state they live in doesn't care or they aren't strict enough.

If Link is always different, why can't he be black or hispanic, or zora or goron?  Is the Triforce racist?  I call for Affirmative Action !  Seriously though if Miyamoto and Aunomora?~(man I can never remember his name) believe each Link is different, let's see them put their money where their mouth is.

You know what?  I would KILL for the frog suit in a new Mario game.  That was easily my favorite upgrade even though it wasn't as useful as the leaf.  Especially after Yoshis that melted in water.

I bet if Nintendo showed the WW style at Spaceworld 2k, it would have killed the small amount of hype the Gamecube had when it launched.  I can tell you right now seeing a WW demo at spaceworld to show off the abilities of the Cube would not have made me happy, but yeah manny I do agree with you.

Man, I am angry I wasn't here yesterday.  Most stuff has being debated to a point I'm satisfied with except...

Another thing. All the nessecary items, items you need to beat the game, are practically handed to you. Take Dragon Roost Isaldn for example. Medli givs you the bottle... in LttP, you would have had to explore around a bit and find an treasure chest with an item hidden in a recess somewhere, or something.
More character interaction......adds to the game, in my opinion.

Then all the derisive stuff of Smashman.

That is weak.  Nintendo did take dungeons out of the game so they had to have people give you what you should have earned.  When the Great Fairy just gave me the fire and ice arrows, I felt ripped off.  I love those weapons/addons and I don't think you should get two weapons that cool and important at the same time, EVER.  I mean in Zelda you start off with nothing but your boots and usually you acquire items one by one-it's part of the game.
Smashman, it's not OoT because its W-i-n-d W-a-k-e-r.  Seriously though WW is a different experience and the fact that we're arguing/debating proves how different it is and differientiates who appreciated the differences and who...uh... not so much.   Hope WW2 appeals to us all!

Oh yeah, I agree that the poll threads are usually pretty bad and understand why you lock them.  The reason I asked about the main page is that often people will be at PGC but won't be logged in or take notice of a new thread.  The guest numbers are usually pretty high and those people aren't voting.

To get more people to respond, is it possible to put the poll on the main page?  Honestly I didn't even no you guys did polls.  In fact because of the no poll thread clause, I subconciously equated PGC as antipoll.  That ain't right some of my best friends are polls.

De gustibus non est disputandem
Relative Translation: "You can't argue with fun factor."
EDIT: KN, I disagree with WW's story being better.  OoT is based off the formula for a tale of an epic hero that has been around for millenia.  While I can appreciate,  WW Link having his sister stolen (accidentally), I think it can't beat the idea of destiny and the outcast of the world saving the world that is indifferent to him.  OoT is the first Zelda in the chronological telling and I think it is a great starter for the Zelda myth.  But again it boils down to opinion.

Bill, I noticed that your top three Zelda games are a Gameboy version, a 2d console version and a 3d console version.  Seriously how do you rank them?  Is it that you divided the Zelda franchise into those three verson categories and picked what you felt were the top in each respective category?  Did you do it by Dungeons?  Did you do it by storyline?  (I personally hope not b/c I can't see how you think OoT's epic story is worst than WW's)  Or is it something more personal like the experience that goes along with the game?
What makes your favorite Zelda game your favorite, you guys?  What are you basing the OoT bashing and the WW praising (and the reverse) off of?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Zelda: Wind Waker was it a let down?
« on: February 22, 2004, 06:31:51 AM »
I was, like I've said before, dissapointed in WW.  I lot of its defenders are quick to state that WW haters are immature because they won't play a cel-shaded game, but WW actually made me like celshading, but I felt that Nintendo wasted this new style on Wind Waker.
Like Queztacoatl, I felt ripped off with the facial expressions.  Miyamoto-san told us the shift in style was to better convey emotion.  I was already cynical because there are photorealistic games that do convey emotion well, and then they did give rapid shifts in faces, as opposed to facial expressions.
The game is better than alot of crap on the market, but it is by no means the best game on the GCN or in the Zelda series.  On this board, I read a post that began something like "the game was perfect except that it has this and this and this wrong with it."-i.e. not perfect.  I agree with Quez, that this game leeched off of previous successes (and the desperate need of a well-known game on the GCN).
For thoses of you with fire in your eyes, this is my opinion.  Bill defines it somewhere in here .

Hey Bill, the amoeba boss from OoT was pretty hard.
