TalkBack / RE: Pokemon Colosseum Import Review
« on: March 26, 2004, 02:05:36 PM »
I am severely disappointed in the colloseum mode also.  In the 64 incrarnations, all you had to do was make sure you had an item on your game cart to equip it to pokemon before battle, you could rummage through your boxes to get pokemon to enter, and yes you could store a hell of a lot of pokemon and items.  This game part of the game makes me livid.  Not only is it slower moving because you have to register everything before you battle and link your GBA to register, but it offers less than the 64 versions IMO.  Also the fact that you can register only one team is a slap in the face, where the hell are those 48 blocks of memory going to?
Also after playing MGS:TTS where there is so much dialogue, it doesn't even feel right that everything is in silence except background music.  Gosh I miss that announcer.
And if this is supposed to be a pokemon for an older crowd I should not have to read rubbish like,"I heard if the door to a pokemon's heart closes..."  I think it should be from now on illegal for Nintendo to use metaphors in Pokemon games.  However other than that salient lameness, I have enjoyed the story mode but it is not worth the price of the game (so far, I too am about halfway through).

NDS is such a completely different product to the GBA that it won't have an effect on GBA SP sales.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know about that. Hopefully they are right; we all know how this (DS) will be perceived though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm with you Kennyb.  This is going to affect to affect sales of SP.  I think Nintendo should just come out and say what they're thinking, though, "We already sold millions and everyone who wants an SP badly enough has one already."  I guess they don't want to scare the johnny-come-latelys.

I thought of evolution worlds, because the game is the crappy combination of Evolution 1 and 2, with elements of both games subtracted and less story than the two full length games.

KDR, I like the idea of banners as long as they aren't too distracting.  What do you mean broadband connections can't handle streaming properly, though?  Do you mean they have to stop and buffer?  Also you lost me when you were talking about storing ads in Audio RAM.  Do you mean the audio for the ad or the actual ad?  And do you mean the audio RAM on the game disks? (please forgive my ignorance)
Commerical breaks?  I wasn't even thinking on that level, lol.  I don't know why but that's funny to me.  Commercial breaks would suck but in large, online tournaments they would be a good way to get more sponsors.
IGN has a program kind of similar to what I'm proposing.  Anytime you open a streaming video, a 15-second MSN ad akin to what you'd see on TV proceeds it.  Just double or triple up on the ads.  A permenant banner could probably even decrease the amount of successive ads you have to watch.

Will Nintendo still be selling the digital component cable online?  I've put buying it on the backburner for a long time.

I hope that if it is a synthesis of all three, it is nothing like Evolution Worlds...

That and who does the artist think Nintendo is? Microsoft? How on earth could anyone reach those bottom three buttons, let alone any buttons on that device slapped with an ergonomic-ugly stick.

What I find really weird about that comment is that, I previously read the interview about Resident Evil 4 on ign and it was the same guy.  He seemed confident RE4 will do fine.  But maybe you guys are missing something.  He does say the GCN is kiddie in the US as opposed to Japan.  Maybe he does think there is a huge difference in the markets.

"As for the "kiddy" comment well if this guy is going out and BASHING the userbase of the console he's making the game for he's a f*cking moron."
He's working on RE 4.  He could piss on a GCN in public and I'd still love him.

I wasn't really worried about how many buttons the DS has for its games- I'm worried about it getting N64 ports that it probably would not be able to support because the N64 had 8 effective buttons.  Also I'm curious as to whether or not anyone will attempt to use the stylus in game.  I can't claim that a stylus centered game is doomed to failure, but I can say that such a game is limiting itself to slower play.  Actually Pokemon and other Turn based RPGs lend well to the idea.

Really I was thinking grade A concrete.  The donkey shape i'm sure will help with the playability of the games and set Nintendo up as supporters of the American Democratic Party.
Looking back I left myself SOOO open to that.

i'm good with game card.
I've read a couple of articles on the DS as I'm sure everyone has, and it sounds to me like there won't be that many buttons on it (i keep hearing a,b and stylus, and i'm desperately looking for a hint of x and y) which would limit N64 ports.  There were 9 buttons on the 64 controller so even if we get x and y, that's 6 buttons and a stylus.  GCN gets screwed in ports for having 1 less button, so ported 64 games to DS would be clumsy and lacking.  Therefore straight ports are not worth it.  Don't try to whichever developers are reading.
Enhanced ports are different stories.  I am dreaming of a 8 person, wireless smash bros.

Real-y, define free.  The wireless functionality has finally caught my attention.  The wavebirds are great.  Still I doubt we'll get that much range on them but still nice not to be corded (20 ft is nice).  I hope DS links wirelessly with the GCN 2, I hate GCN-GBA connectors!
Also I've been out of the DS loop, how concrete is the stylus? (I can see myself or my siblings losing that already)

Nintendo Gaming / Ads for Online Gaming
« on: March 06, 2004, 08:10:29 PM »
I get my online gameboy advance and gamecube newsletters every so often and under a screenshot and description for two Nintendo first party titles, there will be a third screenshot.  That screenshot in fine print says 'this is a paid advertisement" and is third party title.  This system of sponsoring has been around for ages in the TV, sports, movie and online industry, hell even PGC is sponsored similarly.  So I was wondering why Nintendo couldn't implement this for online gaming.
Nintendo says that they want to make a profit and that people aren't ready to pay for online services yet.  I understand that they want to make a profit but I disagree that people aren't ready to pay yet... because I don't think people (as a whole) will EVER be ready to pay.  Many people can't pay if they know they are being charged directly.  So here's my plan:
Nintendo should bring what ever console online and advertise to people it is free* to play.
People will get online but before entering the game setting will be show a series of *shudder* unskipable trailers of videogames (in the best scenerio), movies and commercials (in the worst case).  How ever many it takes Nintendo to break even or make a profit.  For dialup users this could be modified to be a series of flash ads or something.  They might even try spacing out the advertising so broadband users are hit more heavily due to their faster connection.  As a broadband user, I don't mind taking a couple for the team.
For those who can't stand the ads, there could be a premium plan to get out of watching the ads, hopefully $ 5-10 a month so I could afford it.
Certain games could even contain cookies that will allow more or less mature advertising.  ESRB and federal governments would love that!

That way people couldn't complain that they were paying for online and Nintendo could make a profit.  Having your cake and eating it too.  I think it would suck but it could work.  What do you guys think? Not a poll

P.S.  I not good at T3H CoMPUT3Rs so I don't know if this is technically possible or any of the complications, but it seems sound in theory (at 2:00 AM )

Although I know I'd hate Nintendo for it, have they ever thought of having a bunch of advertising before you could enter an online game?  I know when they send you nintendo newsletters they have their own ads then a third party ad closeby.  Could a similar system be implemented with *shudder* even more ads?  And maybe a premium plan for those who can't stand ads?

I think the word stealing needs to be defined.  I think Gamebasher's angry Sony is going to use this idea and probably get credit for it whereas Nintendo has been pushing this for a couple of years and still isn't getting recognition.  A stealing of a trump card before it was effectively played if you will...
P.S.  I always felt the transfer pack was the descendant of Nintendo's own Super Gameboy that just capitalized on the controller inputs of the N64.  Whatever.  I think Nintendo's problem is that pre-FF:CC they used the GBA/GCN connectivity just as they did the transfer packs, put a game in out pops a bonus- no real interaction between the two systems.

Unless she's just following the A&F crowd (they make the shirt, right?).  I think like everything this is a gray area.  Maybe the girl M_C saw was socially conscious and likes knowing that somewhere on a video game forum, nerds are talking about her but likely she is a mindless drone who went, "Hey that manequin is wearing the shirt.  The manequin is so beautiful.  I can be beautiful too (or however else girls get fashion ideas)."  Or she's in on the conspiracy.
P.S. if this thread every gets to 1000 posts, I call the 1000th which will be something to the effect of the t-shirt that launched a thousand posts.

Video game wise I agree with you, UJ, but Nintendo has always been a business.  A great business.  But lately their business decisions are bordering on stupid.  If you knew you were dropping  your console's price 50 USD under your competition (Iwata commented that he thought about doing it in the summer but went for the packaged GBP instead, which is about 3-4 months to up production, rent out space, etc...), you should be prepared to stock and restock stores.  Maybe it is not entirely main NCL's fault.  Somebody American needs to tell them about Black Friday and it's huge potential.

I did really like parrying but since I'm for the "return Link to realism" camp, I recognize that WW's parry just would not look right in a photorealistic (PR) environment.  I think they could implement a form of parry like in SC2 that wouldn't look ridiculous in PR 3D and still keep the function in tact.
Still parrying looked phat as hell.  Hours with Orca just parrying in WW.  Orca was why I have no regrets about shelling out 50 USD for WW.
