General Gaming / Re: Sony's Motion in the Blue Ocean

But considering it's on an HD console you probably won't need more than one controller anyway, all the games that are actually worth playing only support online MP.
If that's true, then Sony really misunderstood what made the Wii so popular.

Metroid sells, predominantly, to people like us, who pay attention to reviews and word of mouth, and those have been, at best, mixed.
Actually, I'd argue that that word-of-mouth is way more critical to selling to 'casuals'.  They aren't going to care what some snobby game reviewer geek thinks about a game, but they will pay attention to what their friends are playing.

Not that this applies to this particular game, which is clearly designed to be casual "unfriendly".  I'm making the comment to combat the notion that 'casuals' will buy anything they see on the store shelf.

Interesting that there's an accelerometer in there.
Really doesn't make any sense.

Unless it somehow responded to vibrations in the floor, caused by jumping up and down.  But I can't imagine it being that sensitive.

Full 2-D Mario is still going to sell better then 3-D Mario though.

And, if recent trends continue, the 3D game is still going to be a lot better than the 2D one.
If you mean more funds / effort will be thrown at the 3D game, then I agree.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Posts Loss for First Half of 2010
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:57:35 PM »
BNM:  I think you're severely underestimating the importance of the holiday season.  Remember, last Christmas the Wii was sold out!  If you took a snapshot of this time last year, I doubt it would be very different.  It wasn't until NSMBWii was released that the outlook became positive.  While I don't think DKCR will do the same this year, I expect sales to be adequate as to reach a net yearly profit.  And apparently so does Nintendo. I do however think they missed an opportunity when they pushed Zelda back to next year.

On the subject of DS, what was the last significant title released for the platform by Nintendo?  Sure 3DS has prevented sales since E3, but I believe Nintendo has sort of given up on the system for a short while now.  Sales of DS are less important now than getting 3DS sales next year.

I think it's pretty clear that the strength of the yen is mostly responsible for there being an actual net loss.  When most of your sales come from NA (correct me if I'm wrong), and retail prices are lowest there, combined with the US dollar trading very poorly against the yen, it would be a challenge to be profitable.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Wii Holiday Game of the Year 2010 Poll
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:30:16 PM »
Would it be a good idea to include Skyward Sword? I know that game's release is far off, but what if one of your relatives pre-ordered the title for you for the holiday. I am very tempted, but want to hear feed back.
Can't call a game a winner if it hasn't actually sold yet.  Any pre-order numbers won't be known.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:27:46 PM »
Doesn't matter if games continue to sell, it just makes look Nintendo look bad to investors to be in last place. The Wii is running out of steam, slowly but surely. I'm sure the next 2 months will be huge once again, but after that it's time for them to start hyping the Wii 2 or Wii HD or whatever it will be.
Depends on how well Skyward Sword performs.  If it's properly executed it could buy the platform another year.  If not, then you're probably right.  Do we know of any other first party games planned for after this holiday season?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:09:36 PM »
Actually, I'm pretty sure they're more concerned with year-over-year growth than their competitors' sales.  How well your competitor does is much less important when you're experiencing solid growth.  Of course, as a console approaches market saturation, software sales become that much more important for profitability.  So if there's any reason to be pant-shitting (which I think there is), it is because of this.

http://nspaceinc.wordpress.com/2010/10/09/n-space-rumor-control/

Kotaku just sucks at reporting news.

What did Kotaku have to do with the rumored report?
it was sources close to gameblurb that posted the story. Kotaku reported on the 25 laid off back in August.
http://kotaku.com/5659586/rumor-geist-call-of-duty-ds-developer-n+space-shuts-down

Sure, the rumour originated at gameblurb, but Kotaku was too lazy to fact-check, and just spread the misinformation.

Wait until 8000 years from now when it's 10:10:10 on 10/10/1010.
I doubt we'll be using the same calendar system, or even number system then.

Oh, and 8000 years from now the year will be 10010.

TalkBack / Re: Epic's Rein: '3DS Unlikely to Run Unreal Engine'
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:16:40 PM »
Rein's still butthurt that the Wii became dominant, without embracing HD graphics.  There were a lot of these types in the industry for the first few years of Wii, but most of them have since gotten over it, or at least learned to keep quiet.

And before anyone jumps on me for jumping to judgment, he's the one who's making conclusions based on guesses.  He's the only one I've heard claim that the 3DS is anything less than capable of what devs want.

General Gaming / Re: Pachter: Apple will have a game console soon
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:06:58 PM »
Wasn't Pachter the one that predicted that PS3 would "definitely" win this generation's console war?
That was all "analysts".

Pachter's the one that would say every time that the Wii's a fad, and that the "HD version" will be coming out soon (this went on for years).  Then, when Move was announced he changed his tune and claimed that this was what he meant when he said "WiiHD coming soon!"  No BS.

And that's just one instance of several where he lost all credibility.  He's not as much a true 'analyst' as he is a 'personality', who uses any chance to market himself.

@Guitar Smasher
You couldn't play a game on a laptop while walking but what's to prevent you on a car, bus, plane, or train?
Consider this:
- limited battery life (many MMO quests last multiple hours)
- heating issues (can't keep a gaming laptop sitting on your lap)
- control input (not having a mouse makes navigation difficult)
- need to plan ahead (you have to commit to taking your laptop with you; with a handheld it's likely already waiting in whatever bag you've got with you)

Yes, under specific conditions a laptop can be used for gaming outside the home.  However it is far from being truly 'portable'.

They're way ahead of you. It apparently drops in early December and it's called "Cataclysm"... oops.
That's a WoW expansion, correct?  So basically, more of the same?  Eventually WoW gamers are going to get bored with the theme, and look for something fresh.

I apologize for all the spamming. Perhaps we should create a new topic involving video game ideas regardless of their weirdness.
That's not a bad idea, why don't you start one in General Gaming?  I'd make one for you, but I think it'd be better if you set the tone of the discussion.

Mp3 players 'took off' before laptops 'took off' so that's not a fair comparison. And their functionality is so radically different it further makes your point moot. Mp3 players offer tons of music in your pocket, while a laptop is much too big for a pocket and does so many other things that using it only to play music is ridiculous. Even as I say that it makes me think of pocket-sized tablets which actually would be practical for only playing music on the go. Which also makes me think that tablets might negate the need for something like the Jungle.
My point's valid - why spend $800 for a system that's much too large to be truly 'portable', that lasts no more than a few hours before the battery's dead, and that's designed for way more applications than you're actually interested in?  Laptops aren't well suited to being portable music players, and they aren't well suited to being portable game systems.

Of course tablets would be better suited to portable gaming than laptops, but their prevalence is still so small that a dedicated MMO machine could carve out its own segment if it strikes with the right software.

It's for MMOs.  Does it have World or Warcraft?  No?  Well then it is fucked.
There's always room for new killer apps.  I think the MMO community is ready for a new game that makes WoW look old.

Plus if I want to play MMOs on the go can't I just use a laptop?
So that's why mp3 players never took off... how enlightened.

Sorry if I'm giving you attitude, but it seems you didn't put too much thought into your post.

TalkBack / Re: Iwata Discusses 3DS Software Prices
« on: October 04, 2010, 09:48:26 PM »
Didn't Nintendo drop the price of the DSi and DSiXL to 150 and 170?

This move leads me to believe that the 3DS will not even cross the 200 dollar threshold and will most likely be priced at $199.99 along side the Wii.
They might think the larger difference in price may help perceptions that 3DS truly is a notable upgrade over the DS, from the general public.

I wouldn't expect them to sell them for $100 cheaper over here, unless Japan sales are truly underwhelming.  Remember, you can't just jack up the price of your system if you exceed expectations; it only goes the other way.

If it's ever released, it'll provide stiff competition for PSP Go.

Mind you, the idea of quality MMOs on a portable is actually smart (from a business standpoint, not an ethical one).  Think social-Tamogotchi for adults.  However, after seeing just a single image of the unit, I judge this to be lacking in execution.

94
I'm not really familiar with the typical failure modes for Wii (disc-drive? bad memory? overheating?), but somehow I don't think the plastic is the reason.

I certainly haven't heard of a situation where the console broke because of structural failure, without it going through unusual abuse.

95
Kinect and Move use separate cameras that you place on (or around) the TV, so they aren't any less complicated.  Don't forget that the Wiimote pointer function is actually a camera, and in combination with the "sensor bar", is essentially a Move in reverse.

On the idea of the camera being built-in, I don't think this would work well since the pointer performance is dependent on the camera/signal source being strategically placed near the TV.

Frankly, I think the current Wii setup is about as optimal as possible, and you can even replace the wired bar with a battery powered one.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Metroid (NES)
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:39:16 PM »
During the NES's life, games were harder and were harder to learn.  So people who enjoyed those games usually still enjoy them.  They just like the games that leave more up to the player.
That sounds like nostalgia for old games and design. It's exactly what I was saying. Again, there's nothing wrong with that, and I'm not sure why some people view it as a bad thing.
Because most of the time when someone says "your opinion's just based on nostalgia", it comes with the pretense of "which makes your argument for this game invalid."

TalkBack / Re: GoldenEye Designer Comments on Wii Remake
« on: September 05, 2010, 02:53:44 AM »
I think the producer described it as if they were making a present day game based on the movie, rather than just re-making the original game. In fact, in interviews they have made it a point to say that it is NOT a remake of the N64 game.
And yet the promotional video shown at E3 described it as an homage to the original.

You know, with classic multiplayer modes like splitscreen and paintball!!!

Yeah, I don't have high hopes for this one.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Metroid (NES)
« on: September 04, 2010, 04:33:43 PM »
I think Metroid is seriously underrated.  Think of the era in which it was released, and it is really not a bad game at all.  If it was as bad as people like to pretend, then there would be no Metroid II or Super Metroid.

I think there is a significant distinction between older gamers and modern gamers, in terms of expectation of difficulty.  I don't pretend that I'm an older gamer (I'm only 22), or that I really have a complete understanding of the era, but it seems that games were supposed to be hard (since they weren't very long).  By comparison, today's games pretty much hold your hand the whole way through.

I can understand how it's frustrating to start off handicapped by next to no health, with enemies already attacking.  And when you die in the 3rd room, it's easy to write the game off as fundamentally flawed.  But after several tries you really refine your skill set and determine your objectives.  That's a really rewarding feeling.

Another complaint is that it's difficult to navigate.  But really, we've grown accustomed to having a map, compass, and never-ending hints to help us find our way in modern games.  I suspect gamers of the era were more accustomed to navigating blind.  They might even prefer the challenge of it.

People say it has aged horribly, but I argue that it's not because it's a bad game.  It's just that gaming expectations have evolved and Metroid doesn't fit into the modern expectations.  Honestly, I think anyone who enjoyed the game when it first came out, and has been exposed to modern games will still find the original enjoyable.

Considering how Prime 1 is the only series-game to outsell it, it must have been loved upon its release.  You can't just dismiss this.

99
They'd sooner use HD-DVD that go with Blu-Ray. Not a terrible idea considering it's niche usage today. Could probably get the tech for cheap as well.

I think the tech would be more expensive for HD-DVD.  The more something is manufactured, the less it costs per unit to build.  This is because there is more competition, more people working on developing cheaper versions of the technology and better manufacturing processes, and larger factories generally have cheaper per-unit costs than small factories (as long as the factory doesn't get too large).
Yes, that means Blu-Ray has gotten cheaper.  But it doesn't necessarily mean it's any cheaper than HD-DVD.

Not knowing the costs of either, I can't say whether you're correct or not.
