I'm sticking with $179.99.  Too bad it's not listed.

I would like both screens to be the same size. Wouldn't rumble eat the battery up too quick though?
Yeah, it would be a big drain.  Not to mention that they tend to break easily, so it's not as simple as replacing a controller.

By the time Move/Kinect drop in price, they'll be competing with 3DS.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month
« on: June 21, 2010, 10:57:19 PM »
I'm expecting the system to sell out in Japan.  For months.  This might delay the American launch, past March'11.

But if Sony somehow releases the rumoured PSP2 first quarter 2011, then NoA will be forced to launch.

Although the fact Americans have experienced the system already as opposed to the Japanese (who I assume haven't), this may entice NoA to get it out here much sooner.

Too many variables.

But my guess goes to March 2011.

Is there any indication Miyamoto has had or will have any involvement with this title?  What was the last DK title he actually worked on?

It's hard to imagine a more poorly conceived add-on.  Every new detail decreases its potential appeal.  No wonder investors are calling for MS to cut the Xbox brand.

The troubling thing, for Xbox, is that if Microsoft continues to push this after it's failed in the marketplace, they could undo any marketshare/customer interest they've gained with 360 (outside of RRoD).

Can someone put all this tech talk into laymans terms?
Yes, please!

And can anyone say if the visuals produced by a system capable of GC/Wii level graphics will look better/worse because of the smaller screen?

« on: June 21, 2010, 07:24:43 PM »
True I won't argue those points, but my original point was related to GB/DS/PSP type handhelds.  A quick search tells me Leapster 2 sells for $60.  Considering the 3DS will go for at least $150, I wouldn't say they're comparable.  I can tell you really easily which of the two I'd feel more comfortable buying for a child 7 or under, who will probably lose the thing sooner or later.

This isn't very encouraging.  Kids are a big part of the target demo.  If I was a parent would I deal with the hassle of buying my kid one of these and then making sure he doesn't use the 3D feature or do I just not buy him the thing at all?

Hell, as an adult I'm not encouraged by such a warning.  Any potential eye damage is a turnoff, even if as an adult I might be fine.
I read in a separate article that the warning is suggested for children 7 and under.  I wonder how many parents buy handhelds for children this young, already.  Personally I don't think kids this young should have a portable game system in the first place, for a number of reasons.

There are portable game systems that are made for children that young, Like Leap Frog's Leapster which has edutainment games.
I would call those exceptions to the standard GB/DS/PSP portable model, which aren't made for younger children (although I can't find any official statements to claim this).

Isn't Miyamoto left-handed?  I find it unlikely he would release a game he would find difficult to control.

You guys are crazy to think Nintendo won't follow the path set by Wii.
I think it's crazy to think they will. What has changed since then and now? Nintendo is in 1st place. I don't think anyone is expecting them to "do what Sony did." Nintendo will never launch a $600 console ever. However, Gamecube was a beast. It was more powerful than PS2, comparable to Xbox and still cheaper than both. Is it really hard to believe that Nintendo couldn't do that again? Nintendo selectively chose the components that went into that console. They were efficient, cheap yet powerful.
And GameCube was a failure in most people's eyes.  The majority of current Wii gamers won't buy a new console just because it's got better specs.  Why abandon this giant 'blue ocean' you've just created all for yourself?

3rd parties aren't going to start developing for a new Nintendo console just because "it's a beast".
That's oversimplifying and you know it. Being comparable in power essentially allows third parties to port over. The days of one console getting a majority of exclusives are over. There may be a few here and there, but cross platform releases are the best we can hope for. I would think Nintendo has observed that much from the market. Should Nintendo remain market leader, 3rd parties will likely choose it as the lead platform then port to other consoles, granted it's not pathetically underpowered.
Then why didn't GameCube get all this 3rd party support?  If Nintendo launches a new console, it instantly becomes the 3rd place console in terms of userbase.  Even with GameCube Nintendo was in 2nd place for most of the generation and developers/publishers ignored it.  It's become a cliche, but the industry will find any reason to ignore a Nintendo console ("it's a kiddy system", "only casual games sell", etc...).

Oh, and have you not listened to anything said by Nintendo executives since 2005?
Yeah, I have. This is the same Nintendo that talked about simplifying controls then added a f*cking analog stick to the DS. Nice job there, Nintendo. I'm glad they did too, because it makes sense. Playing 3D games on DS sucked sweaty nuts without one and the whole simplified controls thing succeeded, not by limiting the number of buttons and doodads, but by seeing someone use motion controls or a touchscreen. However, you're living in a dream world if you think executives of any company aren't just justifying current choices. At the drop of a hat, they will abandon those so-called convictions should their respective company's circumstances change. If the successor of the Wii remote has an analog stick and 4 face buttons, expect Nintendo to PR spin the sh*t out of it. Why? Because they have to.
You must have missed it when Iwata said "we can't just make a Wii HD and expect it to become another phenomenon, we have to provide a whole new experience", which Reggie then parroted shortly after.  Nintendo 2005 - present has all been about expanding the market, always explaining that graphics =/= sales.

164
You guys are crazy to think Nintendo won't follow the path set by Wii.  You're basically asking them to do what Sony did this gen: release a console that completely overshoots the needs of the PS2 fanbase, and reducing them from dominating leader to 3rd place.  3rd parties aren't going to start developing for a new Nintendo console just because "it's a beast".  At best, the 3rd parties will wait until the next console matches 360/PS2 sales, before they fully commit.

Oh, and have you not listened to anything said by Nintendo executives since 2005?

TalkBack / Re: Analyst: 3DS May Cost $249-$299, Hit Japan First
« on: June 17, 2010, 08:00:42 PM »
With all do respect to this analyst (not that I respect analysts), I'm sticking with my prediction of $179.99.  If analysts are supposed to recognize trends, why do they skip the history of handheld domination by affordable Nintendo platforms?  This isn't Sony with the PS3.

I used the word incremental as meaning a sustaining innovation but either way to me it means the new device doesn't enable many games that the old one didn't already.

With the DS, the tapping of new markets was evident: mature adults, female gamers, etc.  But I would argue that the games that appealed to these customers could have been possible without the touchscreen.  Brain Age, Nintendogs - these games could have been made for PSP, and wouldn't be much different.  Sure the touchscreen made them more accessible, but it wasn't the reason they sold.  What more could you add to 3DS that would enable non-possible games?

So while I agree the 3DS is clearly a sustaining development, the potential to further expand the market exists if the right software is made.

While graphics may be the primary reason for the delay, it definitely allows the other development departments to improve/refine their respective contributions.

Now I'm speculating here, but it's very possible that Miyamoto didn't approve of Aonuma's 'finished' Zelda, and rather than publicly call him out on it, they used the opportunity fix the real issues while the visuals were revamped.  For all we know Miyamoto might have planned this visual style for the next game, but now has the time to implement it for this one.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii Vitality Sensor *expanding the blue ocean*
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:08:12 AM »
There is also the possibility that Vitality Sensor was just a hardware announcement made to counter MS/Sony's expected hardware announcements at last year's E3.  It was clearly still in the early conceptual stages, and maybe there hasn't been much pressure to get it out quickly.

BNM, how much development capabilities do you think Nintendo has at any given time?  My impression is that they've revealed everything they plan to for this year, other than the final details on 3DS' release.

I hope they switch the position of the analog nub and the d-pad because I like the d-pad to be flush with the other four buttons.

Here is what I meant by the word flush: Having surfaces in the same plane; even.
 b. Arranged with adjacent sides, surfaces, or edges close together: a sofa flush against the wall. See      This is an old carpentry term. I hve used when I hung dry wall and we would say that the dry wall sheet was flush with the wall meaning it lined up properly with the studs in the wall and did not over lap into door frames, etc. The word has many meanings, sorry for the mix up.

Why would the d-pad be flush? Did one of the other buttons write it a romantic poem?

Your are thinking of the word "blush." I am refering to the d-pad being adjacent to the other four buttons.

Oh. But Wikipedia says that it means to become markedly red in the face and often other areas of the skin from various physiological conditions (such as Carcinoid Syndrome). Do you think 3DS could have Wikipedia built into it?

Not to be verbally anal, but what you mean is "vertically aligned".  Technically the dpad and the face buttons are already flush (or near), since they protrude from the body at the same height, meaning their surfaces reside in the same plane (your original definition).

I'm thrilled.  In the rumour thread I expressed my desire to see the game be 2D.  It's clearly a lot of fun.  The foreground visuals aren't the best, but they've nailed the scrolling backgrounds signature to the snes games.  The music rocks.

I'm curious of one thing mostly, are the klassic baddies going to be represented, or does Nintendo not own the rights to them?  I don't think I saw a single one.

Man, a whole lot of shooter games went up on stage today, between Microsoft; EA; and Ubisoft.  What, is there an active movement now to completely obliterate that genre through overexposure?

And would it kill them to have color in this game?
Not an active movement, but the passive effects of an industry lacking creativity and originality.
FPS games sell in the US.  So they keep making them.  When they stop selling, they'll stop making them or try to turn everyone somewhere else.
Yes, FPS is the safe choice when you don't have any unique ideas capable of selling outside the genre.  The big-wigs would love to sell the next "GTA" or "WiiSports", but these kinds of new games are limited to very few companies.
