TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) quarterly profit rose 31.5 percent on the runaway success of its Wii game console, but the Japanese video game maker kept its annual outlook that falls well short of market expectations.

April-June operating profit at Nintendo, which is waging a three-way battle with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) in the global video game industry, rose to 119.2 billion yen ($1.10 billion) from 90.63 billion yen a year earlier.

Nintendo's Wii, competing with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, has enjoyed brisk demand thanks to its easy-to-learn motion-sensing controller, low price and innovative titles such as the "Wii Fit" exercise game.

For the full year to March, Nintendo kept its operating profit forecast of 530 billion yen, up 8.8 percent on the year, but below a consensus of 597.1 billion yen in a poll of 20 analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Shares in Nintendo, creator of iconic game characters such as Mario and Zelda, have fallen 16.9 percent this year through Tuesday, underperforming the benchmark Nikkei average .N225, which is down 14 percent.

Operating Profit ~$1.1 billion
Net Profit ~$1 billion

Wii HW Q1 - 5.17 million (an increase of 1.74 million from last year) (29.62 million total)
DS HW Q1 - 6.94 million (a decrease of 0.04 million from last year) (77.54 million total)

Wii SW Q1 - 40.41 million (an increase of 24.42 million from last year)
DS SW Q1 - 36.59 million (an increase of 2.33 million from last year)

Mario Kart Wii Q1 - 6.42 million
Wii Fit Q1 - 3.42 million (5.27 million total)

Cash and Deposits ~$6.6 billion (decrease mostly due to payment of dividends and income taxes)
Total Assets ~$16.4 billion

Yearly Net Profit Forecast ~$3 billion

Adding this quarter to the previous records

Nintendo Since 1998 has made roughly $10,737,000,000
Sony Since 1998 has made roughly $1,953,000,000
Microsoft since 2002 has made - $6,369,000,000

Last 3 months:
Sony (Game) Profit $51mil
MS (EDD) Loss $188mil
Nintendo Profit $1.01 bil

*shamelessly stolen from NeoGAF*

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this on these boards...

$1 BILLION DOLLARS

How I wish I bought those stock some 2-3 years ago...
What do you think it running through the minds of the 3rd parties right now? $1billion profit in the 1st quarter of the fiscal 2008 year? that is incredible. Blue Ocean, more like Green Oceanand Nintendo is swimming in it.

NWR Forums Discord / I'm looking for a Pic....
« on: March 21, 2008, 03:47:11 AM »
I'm looking for a pic that someone posted some where in these forums.

It was fan made art of Gannon & Link done in a water color paint style.
Gannon had a bright white sword and facing forward while link has his back to the screen.

I used to have this pic set as my background, but someone that came over decided it would be better to switch my background to a pic of her dog.

thanx in advance to anyone that knows what I'm talking about and can locate it for me.

Nintendo Gaming / Space Channel 5 is coming to a Wii near you..... soon!!
« on: January 24, 2008, 08:02:06 PM »
Looks like another rumor has come true. First NiGHTS then Samba De Amigo and now Space Channel 5?
Sega is also Bringing HotD 2+3 & Sega bass Fishing, but I wouldn't be surprised if several other projects from Sega past were to surface over the next year, such as Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Cop and possibly even some Shenmue(?).

But for those that can read German:
Quote

edit: Is that mentioning music from Michael Jackson? I don't read German, but thats what it looks like.

Iwata Ask Sakurai About SSBB pt. 1

This is apparently part one of another one of Iwata's Developer Interviews

Who is the Secret Developer of SSBB?
Quote

Sakurai
Right. Then, just when we were looking for some help, we secured some staff from another video game developer.

Iwata
We were introduced to this company by Miyamoto-san. You can share the name if you like.

Sakurai
Oh, okay. It was Game Arts. It was just after they had finished Grandia III and they told us that they had some staff free. So, we decided to leave the main part of preliminary development to them while we began to hire remaining staff. We did so by looking for people specifically for the Smash Bros. Brawl title.

What kind of manpower was put into SSBB?
Quote

Iwata
How many staff members did you end up having for this project?

Sakurai
Roughly 100 individuals. Of course, there would be even more if you count supervisors and contractors. Looking at all the staff that appears in the staff credits, it was about 700 people.

Iwata
So the number of people involved fulltime was roughly 100.

Why did Iwata respectfully demand Sakurai do the SSBB project?
Quote

Iwata
You know, these aren?t the type of procedures I would employ for just any game. I mean, if this was a regular game, I would never work this way.

Sakurai
Right.

Iwata
My decision to pursue the project in this way rested on one point and one point alone, and it is deeply tied to the point about which I have the utmost faith in a man named Masahiro Sakurai. To state it simply, you are capable of taking a project with nothing and visualizing a completed game almost perfectly in your head. As I mentioned earlier, you and I have a long history working together at HAL Laboratory. When involved on the same project, you were able to point out the smallest details even when the product had yet to take shape. The details were so small and so specific that, as a programmer, I thought there was no way you could know what you knew without actually trying it first. As the game progressed and took shape, however, it was clear that we needed to address the details in just the way you had described. So I would ask "did you really know this right from the start?" I mean, this was over ten years ago, but I remember you said you did and I thought to myself "is this guy for real?" As it happened over and over again, however, I had little choice but to believe you. I don?t know how, but you?re able to visualize a game right down to its very details, as if the finished game is working inside your mind. If not, how else could you have been right so many times? Even now, Masahiro Sakurai, of all the people that I know, you especially can readily form an image of how a game will look when finished. That?s why I knew that you would be capable of putting together the ideas of the talented staff around you. If you don?t have a person like that pulling together different ideas, you need a lot of trust within the team or the project will not go anywhere. When a project has just begun, it?s natural for directions to come from a vague concept of the product. It?s natural for there to be revisions and twists and turns, and as this continues, the project becomes something different than it was at the start. This is not necessarily a bad thing and happens all the time when designing games. However, this only works because of the trust built up from the past of a long working relationship. That?s why it was so unusual to recruit outside staff solely for the purpose of making such a large-scale game. Yet it was exactly this type of thinking on which I was betting our success.

Why should you tune in for Part two of this Developer Interview?
Quote

Iwata
Actually, this brings me to the next part of our interview. Can you tell me about the things that first came to mind when you thought about developing a new Smash Bros. game?

(To be continued)

Nintendo Gaming / The OFFICIAL 2008 Wii Rumor Thread!!!
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:07:06 PM »
The Old Thread broke, so here is a New one for 2008

So lets get this started.

1) The old zapper games, Wild Gunmen, Hogans Alley, Gumshoe ect, aren't being released through the VC, but instead through WiiWare to be used with the new Nintendo Zapper or Wiimote with some updates to the games.  Also, in the same sentence, he told me Zombies Ate My Neighbors is getting the Wii Ware treatment, complete with online co-op and some new goodies.  Apparently they're using small teams of developers to update, add new levels or due some other maintenance on the games.  He didn't make clear whether Lucas Arts is working on Zombies, or perhaps just farmed it out.

2) If the Sonic RPG sells well on the DS, Bioware is interested in making a full Nintendo character RPG and have already laid out initial outlines about the game with Nintendo.  Seems like a foregone conclusion.  How this intertwines with Square Enix makes me wonder about the validity of this one, however.  Unless Square is involved as well.  Then again, a Mario rpg is just the Mario universe, whereas this proposed game is every Nintendo character ever created.

3) Timesplitters 4 is still coming, though it may not be Wii exclusive anymore.  Apparently Microsoft is in hot pursuit of the property and wants to publish it.  However, it's unknown what Free Radical is planning.  *I thought Free Radical had already signed on with a publisher, but I have no proof of it.*  The problem for MS is the game has been built to make the most out of the Wii hardware to this point.

4) Now my personal rumor.  EA has discussed making Madden more stylized for the Wii.  Think the same realistic gameplay, but with cell shaded characters, forgoing realistic players for caricatures.  No, not big headed little people, more like highly stylized, almost cartoon, recreations of all the players.  Apparently, this would help out with more fluid motion/animation as well.  In the end, they believe this would be the best of both worlds for the Wii-great stylized graphics rooted in realistic sports simulation.  I'm thinking '09 for this idea, however as 08 is getting ramped up currently.

Factor 5's new exclusive Wii game is infact Nintendo's very own Kid Icarus
Quote

Nintendo and ex-Nintendo developer Factor 5 might have temporarily broken up, giving the developer just enough time to develop and release its dragon-themed shooter exclusively on Sony's PlayStation 3, but last week, news hit the Internet that the two companies are once again working together. According to reports last week, Factor 5 is developing an exclusive game for Nintendo's latest home console, Wii.

Kombo has learned from a credible source that Wii game is in fact a new installment in Nintendo's cherished Kid Icarus franchise. According to sources, Factor 5's Kid Icarus title is being developed ground-up for Wii. It will not use one of the developer's previous GameCube graphics engines. Unfortunately, at this time, no other details have been provided to us for publish.

Do you believe it? I don't and if someone other than Nintendo is handling the rebirth of Kid Icarus I would prefer the old rumor of Capcom bringing it back. But if it is true, atleast F5 is making a brand newe engine just for the Wii, which should lead to some good graphics and hopefully some licensing out to other 3rd party developers.

Nintendo announces the "Wii Raincheck" Program
Quote

To help assuage consumers' complaints that they can't find a Wii, Nintendo announced this morning that they will begin a 'Wii Raincheck' program. If you pay in full for a Wii before Christmas, you can get a raincheck that you'll be able to redeem for a Wii in January.

Fils-Aime said that the program will be run entirely through retailer GameStop, who he says has "many tens of thousands" of certificates.

The program, says Fils-Aime, is for people who want "something to put under the tree."

7 Million Wii's sold this Christmas....?

Was just released in Japan

From NeoGaf:
Quote

ust download the channel and play around for half an hour

- Once you log in the channel, you see a highlight video of new content (of course it's WiiFit right now)
- You can see most upcoming and recently released Wii and NDS games. They include description, TVCM, and promotion video (if they have)
- Those videos are direct streaming. Since I'm not in Japan, the connection is not stable enough. For a 3-min video, I need to wait 4 times for buffering during video play...
- You can select full-screen by simply clicking the video. For TVCM, they are 4:3 so they cannot occupy full-screen. Wii promotion video are 16:9 though.
- If I don't get it wrong, you rate games by giving it a ranking (slide bar from bad to good). You also need to tell Nintendo your age, sex, and if you think it is easy/difficult. (Market research ftw!)
- DS Demo: Brain Training 2, Flash Focus, Tamagochi 3, E-book from Nintendo, and some other "non-games" that I didn't hear of...
- You need to stream the demo every time from Nintendo server. And then you can use download play to get the demo. The speed of connection is nice here.

A link to the video and quick summary via Wired.com
Quote

In a nutshell: a lot. Watch all kinds of videos, like an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto about Wii Fit. Read up on every DS and Wii game that's about to be released, and see the box art. And, most importantly, download demos of upcoming Nintendo DS games, straight to your DS. Hot.

I wonder when this hits US servers. I would love to demo some DS games from my Wii, now I just have to find my power cord to my DS so that I can charge it up.

Nintendo Gaming / NWR Gamers Gaming Wishlist
« on: October 21, 2007, 04:58:28 PM »
There have been many games over the years that us Nintendo fans have been deprived of. There have been games that came out on other systems that would have been a perfect match for a Nintendo console, Games that have been rumored to be in development but then never came to fruition, Games that were announced but then later quietly or publicly canceled, games that were announced as one thing and then later changed to something else by the time it was to be released, and maybe a sequel to a deserving game that for one reason or another just never got greenlit.

So my purpose of this thread, is to know what games out there(real, rumored and unreleased) are all of wishing would see the light of day on the Wii (and/or DS)?

I'll kick it off with the often rumored and much deserved Beyond Good & Evil II
the perfect match for the Wiimote, Half Life II and Portal
and an improved port of Psychonauts minus the load times.

Does anybody else watch this show?

If you like science fiction, super powers, and the plot of a comic book brought to life in a much better way than any movie has done to this point, then you should be watching this show.

Go buy the season disc, or find the episodes by some other means if necessary, but this show is a must watch especially for all the fans of a show like Heroes, or the X-Men comics/movies/cartoons spoiler*don't read*and the bible?*don't read* spoiler.

Season 4 just ended and I can't wait for season 5 to begin, but that is so far away, I don't really want to think about it.

10. Takeda Pharma ¥7.2 trillion ($59b)

http://biz.yahoo.com/seekingalpha/070720/41781_id.html?.v=1

I could see Nintendo pushing up to the #3 spot, but I'm not so sure they can double their current market cap unless they not only expand the videogame market but completely dominate it shutting out all competitors. Either that or expand into other markets....

Hows that movie/animation studio coming along Nintendo?

minE3 2007 is about 5 days away, so I think its time we laid out on the table what it is we'd like to,  expect to & don't expect to at this years E3.

We already have the OFFICIAL Wii rumor thread (which I will update with another summary before E3) with a list of things waiting to be confirmed or denied (by TGS @ the latest), but what I would like to see is everyones E3 predictions for ALL of E3 and not just Nintendo.

What do you expect from Nintendo, Microsoft & Sony?
What about the 3rd parties, FFXIII, MGS4, RE5, SC4?
Will there be price drop announcements? How about hardware revisions?
Is there a game you expect to be the sleeper hit of the show?
Who is gonna have the best or worse press conference?

If there is anything I missed, please feel free to include and discuss it.
