Are casual girl gamers who take Wii/PS3/360 sales seriously considered art?

That depends. Are these girls casual gamers, or casual non-gamers? It's a very important distinction to make.

If they're casual gamers, then they're art. Barely. If they're non-gamers who non-game casually, then, no.

I hate casual non-games

Does that mean there are hardcore non-games? How do you feel about those?

But good developers should be able to work within Wii's constraints!

To think, you'd have to go to Gonintendo to get comments like these. RawMeatHobo better watch out, they're becoming obsolete.

Maybe the failure of the HD version will convince Suda51 to keep the franchise on the Wii where it belongs. That's what I'm hoping.

Not that the Wii versions were really huge sellers either, but at least the cost of developing on the Wii is much less so games like this make more sense for it.

Pretty sure it wasn't Suda's idea to port the game in the first place. Grasshopper wasn't involved with these ports. Marvelous needs money badly, so they're just flailing around, trying anything they can to stay afloat.

Yeah, somebody find me an article that shows GRiN saying they hate the Wii.

Unless somebody can show me that, it's just more Vocal Minority Whining.

Peter Wanat, producer of Wanted: Weapons of Fate, goes on a batshit insane anti-Wii rant. He compares the power of the Wii to the Genesis, among other things.

But no, no, you guys are right. Nobody in the industry has an irrational hatred of the Wii.

This is just sad.

So because your system is capable of huge budget games, all games on there have to be maximum budget?

If you launch a console for six hundred bucks, then the kind of people who buy it will likely be expecting big budget games.

Also, the entire notion that development on other consoles is not "prosperous" or "sustainable" is insane.

You don't say...

Going back to what the article actually said, it mentions how hype is very important to hardcore game sales, which I think is really the main point.

If "hardcore" gamers are as savvy as some would like to believe, then why do publishers spend so much advertising and hyping them up? 200 million dollars was spent on Modern Warfare 2's advertising campaign, and $2.5 million spent on Dante's Inferno for a Superbowl ad. "Hardcore" games are advertised nonstop on Adult Swim and Comedy Central.

Going by Ian's definition, these are all "hardcore"/"core" games, and the people interested in these games are the type to read gaming websites. So isn't it a waste to spend so much advertising these games? After all, these gamers will read reviews (which surely are never paid for) to know if a game is good or not.

I've been wondering this for a while now, but is there a reason we're supposed to care what this Sean Maelstrom guy thinks?

Because apparantly even EA cares about what he thinks.

Joe Booth of EA Montreal referenced Malstrom's "Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy" article (as well as other discussion about Disruption and Blue Ocean) at a presentation at the 2009 Montreal International Game Summit.

Like it or not, Malstrom is relevant.

In addition to citing a need to investigate the health impact of playing 3D games for hours on end, Iwata looked at the issue from another, more practical point of view.  He quipped, "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?"

Iwata: (Foreshadows)

I've always believed that the constant need for some people to label games as "art" has to do with their parents not "getting" videogames and telling them it's "a waste of time", so they feel they need to justify their hobby by making it into something grander than it really is.

The thing is, even if you think a Wii version wouldn't sell, making a PSP version makes even less sense.

Outside of Japan, the PSP is DEAD. Regginated.

Software sales are abysmal, and hardware sales aren't too hot either.

The point I'm trying to make is that 3rd parties frequently act like porting a game to Wii is either "impossible" and/or it wouldn't sell, yet they release many of these games for the PSP (Tekken 6 got a PSP port BTW, not that I'm asking for it) and the PSP sells jack in the west. And don't forget iPhone ports. Yeah, gamers love playing fighting games without buttons or a D-pad.

To be fair, I don't think EA ever actually claimed God of Dante's Inferno couldn't be done on Wii. But Ian keeps going on about that being the reason Wii misses out on these games, when there are sooo many examples of 3rd parties porting their "epic" HD blockbusters to even less powerful platforms. Like Cassassamasina's Creed going to PSP (which Ubi DID say was "impossible" on Wii.)
